This was so lovely and tender. And because there's dead Obi-Wan, oh-so-heartbreaking.

I don't like Anakin -- I could never forgive him (my own failing), but I'm strangely comforted by the fact that Obi-Wan forgave him and that he was able to forgive himself. Well-written and well-executed.

Thanks so much for sharing.

Shaindl: Oddly enough, the story wasn't specifically born out of that - it actually grew from the story Obi-Wan tells, about Anakin running away when Yoda had him for a few days. I'm thinking about doing a companion to this one about it. tongue I kept thinking about someone else training Anakin, and I decided - you know what? Obi-Wan and Anakin are, in my mind, meant to be Master and Apprentice. And there you go. tongue Strange how things work out, eh? tongue Thank you! grin

VaderLVR64: Thank you. blush Yes, Vader was worse. Obi-Wan would consider his death well-worth it. Thank you, again. blush

BrokenNoseOfQui-Gon: shock blush Wow, thank you. grin I think it was so different because for me, the story was based around the story Obi-Wan tells, not Obi-Wan's actual death. tongue

Gina: *giggles* Thank you, though. grin It never fails to make me blush. wink Yeah - I was thinking about Anakin and attachment, and more specifically, his mother's death. I wondered if he was ever able to let go of it. I just kept thinking - Anakin doesn't understand that people die, that things pass away. You can only hold onto what you have in that moment.

Hananiah: Completely understandable. wink It was actually the memories that made the story, at least while I was writing it - that was what the story was about, that story in the story. silly Thank you. grin

CapNJaxWench: Thank you. grin rose

Shmi02: I love that! grin I love it when stories stay with me that way, and I'm glad this one is staying with you. There's different themes going on in the story, about attachment, and letting things go. As well as destiny. happy Considering that SW is, by nature, somewhat limited in getting into the characters' heads, it's a really fun and intriguing thing to explore in fanfiction, I think. Thank you! grin

Liana: I really spent my time on the first part of the story, getting everything right. (Was thinking about my experience writing poetry, as a matter of fact.) And I've never actually written this time period of Anakin before, so I'm glad he came across well. happy

Yes, remember - I did write this to cheer myself up. For me this story is more happy than sad, because it talks about forgiveness and acceptance. And Anakin ultimately did find his path, saving everyone (including himself), and what more could a father ask for?

Thanks, Liana. hugs

PadawanKitara: Obi-Wan, ever the teacher. wink Thank you. rose

AnakinsHeir: I think so, too. tongue By the time of ANH, Vader had really looked forward to and readied himself for Obi-Wan's death for a long time. I think if it happened earlier, it might actually have had more impact. Thank you! grin

Knight_Aragorn: I'm glad you noticed the little things! grin I had fun playing with that. I wanted to show everything Anakin was feeling, but without being obvious about it. I hope (I tried) everything fits and reconnects at the end of the story. happy

I'm glad you liked Obi-Wan. wink He was very cooperative with me with this story, for some reason. Anakin was less so, but that's okay. tongue Slow and sad and gentle - that's what I was going for. I wanted something more reflective. happy I'm glad you found it hopeful at the end. wink

Thank you. coffee

SiriKenobi12: blush Wow, thank you. grin I wanted the whole scene to be rather vivid. I also wanted to not, well, have an info-dump, but make the backstory (Obi-Wan's death and whatnot) more intregal to the story and less noticeable. wink I'm glad you agreed with how both Obi-Wan and Anakin were written. grin

JediFalcon: Thank you grin and sorry. tongue It only wanted to be a one-shot.

DarthIshtar: Thanks. rose

Indra: Thank you. blush It is a high price, but yes, one Obi-Wan is willing to pay. In the end, maybe Anakin thinks so, too. Because he's not thinking about himself now, or his pride, but how he can serve - and he knows, at least, that he can serve in a huge way. I think that would be the way of the Jedi - the many before the one. Thanks again! rose

lvk1978: Aye. Thank you. blush It's interesting to me that you say it's comforting. I think there's something - beautiful in seeing peace through forgiveness, even if it's so hard to do it yourself. Thank you for reading. rose

that was so sweet...so sad...so vivid! of course, i'd expect as much from you, obaona. happy

great, wonderful job--i ached for Anakin in this: for his loss & his rest & his peace...truly a great job. applause

obaona, whenever I'm feeling introspective or philosophical, I can count on you to give me something to think about. grin

Forgiveness is a tricky thing. Is it necessary to forget in order to be able to forgive? Is it true forgiveness if you can't forget? It seemed like Obi-Wan had forgiven Anakin completely--but is it because he has the advantage (if you can call it that...) of being dead? Are living beings capable of granting such a level of forgiveness?

Can the English language--in all its complexity--really not have a word that has the same connotations as forgiveness so the above paragraph doesn't sound as awkward? tongue So many questions. wink

Anyway, I loved the mood of this whole piece. I could feel that - emptiness, I guess, and the sensation of being lost. I also really liked that he had to forgive himself in order to move on. Padme and the Jedi had thrown him a life preserver--he just had to swim a little ways to grab ahold of it. tongue Yeah, that's the best comparison I've got. It's been a long week. plain wink

Layren: hugs Thank you. rose

SarkaVrae: A good cringe? Okay. tongue I'm glad it was vivid - I always try to make my stories that way. tongue Thank you. rose

Pallas-Athena: Thanks. hugs

LuvEwan: Originally, Anakin was just supposed to remember a moment with Obi-Wan, but Obi-Wan didn't cooperate. tongue Thank you. grin

Jedikma: LOL! silly Of course you liked Obi-Wan - but I'm glad, since he wormed his way in there. tongue Thank you! hugs

RebelScum77: Thank you. Ideas are the easy part, execution much harder. tongue

Leia: Nice to know I'm dependable in at least one respect! wink

My personal opinion is that you don't have to forget to forgive. But nor is 'not forgetting' about holding the thing they were forgiven for over their heads. That's not forgiveness. (Not that that doesn't mean there aren't or shouldn't be consequences, depending on the situation.) Is it easier for Obi-Wan as he's dead? Yeah, probably. tongue But I honestly think he would forgive Anakin anyway, though it wouldn't be easy. And yes, I at least think people can forgive like that. happy

It's a good analogy, actually. Anakin couldn't be a Jedi with this hanging over his head. If he couldn't forgive himself, my theory was going, he would wallow in it instead of being what he is meant to be. Despair has it's own kind of darkness, and while I don't think Anakin would fall again, it wouldn't be good for him. And it wouldn't be what the Jedi, Padme or Obi-WAn wanted for him. Anyway, I'm glad you really felt the emptiness, the lost feeling. The mood was very important to the story, I think. happy

Thank you for the thoughtful reply, and reading. rose

Very touching. I can see that the death of his mentor in such circumstances might be the impetus needed to turn Anakin back toward the light. It sounds like Obi-Wan did what he set out to do, even if it took the sacrifice of his own life to do it.

Good point, Arcalian. This story really makes me wonder whether it could have worked this way... I'm sure had Obi-Wan thought it could, he would have no qualms with giving his life to make Anakin return to the light. Heck, he ends up doing it in ANH anyway (one of several steps).

But this was still just heartbreaking sad Poor Obi-Wan. Poor Anakin. I have kind of wondered what would have happened to Anakin if he had actually killed Obi-Wan in the Duel. Here you give us a really compelling and perfect picture. Even just the image of Anakin holding Obi-Wan as he dies is just... cry

Lovely work, oba

You- you- not only have you rendered me speechess (which happens close to never), but you have also made me actually tear up- and I don't cry at fan fic. In fice years of reading various stories from various fandoms, I think I have cried a total of three times and one time doesn't count, because I was crying before hand, so it didn't take much to make me begin again. And you have done it to me. So...brilliant. Really, this fic is absolutely brilliant. I loved it. The emotions and the way Obi-Wan appeared to Anakin and just, well, everything about this fic was wonderful. A truly gorgeous, yet tragic and sad piece, with hopefully a happier ending. I- just great. Since I'm apparently unable to say anything of real substance, except sing your praises, I think I'll end this now...
