LEGACY OF LIGHT
By Knight_Aragorn
Summary: An AU tracing the events of the war with the Empire from a different perspective… and following the battle between shadow and light, hurt and healing, in the deepest reaches of the soul.
Disclaimer: Star Wars does not belong to me…
A/N: This story continues the events of the short story Shining Down the Years. It would be a good idea to read that first, but you could probably follow the story without doing so. You might be a little confused to begin with, is all.
LEGACY OF LIGHT
PROLOGUE
Leia Organa stepped into her father’s spacious office in the upper regions of the Royal Palace in Aldera. It was decorated in a subtle but refined manner, its pale blues and soft greens reminiscent of Bail Organa’s childhood home on Alderaan’s south continent; a testimony to his abiding love of the sea.
Her father was not at his wide desk, nor at the communications console by the side wall. Rather, he stood before the tall window at the far side of the room, his hands clasped behind his back, looking out over the lush palace gardens.
“Father,” Leia said.
He turned. “Leia.” She walked over and he embraced her warmly. “How was your trip?”
“Fine,” she answered. “I am concerned, though, about the climate on Coruscant. There is talk of Palpatine dissolving the senate.”
Bail frowned. “So I have heard,” he said. He looked out the window again, then turned his gaze back to her. “That is not, however, the reason I asked you here.”
Leia frowned at his solemn tone. “What is it?”
He turned, gesturing toward the elegant settee angled to overlook the garden view. “Sit, please, Leia.” Puzzled, Leia did so. She watched as Bail paced back and forth a few times and then turned to face her. “Leia, it has become necessary for me to tell you something that I have previously kept from you. My reasons for doing this will, I hope, become obvious.”
Leia’s frown deepened. Bail looked at her, drew a breath, and said, “I am not your birth father.”
Leia stared at him. “What?”
He crossed to the settee in two strides, sitting and taking her hands in his own. “Leia, you must remember as I tell you these things that nothing can change the fact that I love you, and that I am always very proud of you. Understand?” He waited, and Leia nodded.
“But I…” she began, bewildered.
“Hush,” Bail said. “Let me explain.” Leia fell silent, and he stood again. “Your natural father was a young Jedi Knight by the name of Anakin Skywalker.”
Leia stiffened at that name. “Skywalker…” she repeated.
Bail glanced at her, concern in his dark eyes. “Yes,” he said. “Anakin Skywalker. He was apprentice to the man you know as General Kenobi, and was one of the most powerful Jedi Knights ever seen in the history of their order. Possibly the most powerful. A volatile young man, though; impulsive and… strangely naïve. He was knighted during the Clone Wars, when the Jedi were desperately seeking to supplement their declining numbers.”
“It was soon after his knighting that a terrible thing happened.” Bail looked at her. “Anakin Skywalker fell to the dark side of the Force. Exactly how it happened is shrouded in mystery, but I suspect Palpatine’s influence played a significant part.” Bail paused, and said, “Anakin Skywalker became the being we know today as… Darth Vader.”
Leia’s eyes widened and she drew a sharp breath, suddenly feeling ill. “Vader?” she whispered.
“Yes.” Bail crossed to sit beside her again. “Yes, Leia. Vader.” He paused as Leia sat in stunned horror. When Bail went on, his voice was gentle. “After Anakin’s fall, it was discovered that he had secretly violated the Jedi code by marrying a young woman by the name of Padmé Amidala, a senator for the planet of Naboo. Padmé was pregnant when he fell to the darkness.” He leaned forward, his dark eyes intent. “She gave birth to twins, Leia. A boy and a girl. They were separated, sent to different foster parents on different worlds, to keep them safe from their father and his new master.”
Bail took Leia’s hands in his own, and she felt how dry and cool his fingers were. “Leia, Luke Skywalker is your brother.”
She stared at him. “My brother?” she repeated numbly. “That Sithspawned murderer is my brother?” Bail flinched, but nodded. Leia stared to the front unseeingly. “But of course,” she murmured. “This means that I’m Sithspawned too.”
Bail’s hands tightened on hers. “As hard as it is to believe, Leia, your father was a good man once.” His voice softened. “And it is possible that your brother is not all that he seems.”
Leia frowned. “What do you mean?”
Bail’s gaze went to the window. “There is a reason that is has become necessary for you to know this information,” he said.
“And that is?”
Bail looked back at her, his dark eyes solemn. “Luke Skywalker has contacted us. He claims to have information about the superweapon that Palpatine is rumoured to be constructing, and is willing to hand it over – with a view to becoming a permanent Rebel informant.”
“What?” Leia spat. She stared at her – her adoptive father, and let out a short, disbelieving laugh. “That’s insane. He can’t possibly expect us to believe him.”
Bail nodded. “I would have agreed, if not for the fact that we have also received a transmission from General Kenobi, confirming Skywalker’s good intention and conveying his endorsement of the idea.”
Leia examined the familiar contours of Bail’s face. “The General’s word is that trustworthy?” she asked softly.
Bail inclined his head, and said, “He asserts that Skywalker is genuine in his desire to assist the Rebellion. If Obi-Wan says it is so, then it must be.”
Leia drew a deep breath and sat back, her eyes on the pale-blue sky visible through the window. She tried to gather herself. “What does this have to do with me?”
“Skywalker insists on meeting with you to pass on the information,” Bail answered softly. “Only you, Leia.”
She stared at him as she thought it through, weighing alternatives in the matter-of-fact way that she had been trained to. “Do you believe it is worth the risk?”
Bail met her eyes. “That is a choice only you can make, Leia,” he said quietly. “Daughter of my heart. I cannot make it for you.”
Leia closed her eyes. A brother – a brother! And in such an unlikely place. “I have seen Skywalker,” Leia said aloud, her eyes still shut. “On Coruscant.” She was silent for a time, and then, abruptly, she said, “He has very cold eyes.”
“The boy has not had an easy life,” Bail said quietly. “Nor will he.”
It was, Leia thought, a strange thing to say. She opened her eyes and looked at him, but Bail’s dark eyes were on the window.
Leia chewed the inside of her lip. Now that her initial disorientation was fading, she realised that the revelation about her brother was not the shock it should have been. Somehow, it was as though she’d already known. As though a part of her that she’d never realised was lost had been found. The sensation was very odd; odd, but not unpleasant.
As for the other… Leia didn’t even want to think about it. Bail had watched over her and loved her all her life – as far as she was concerned, that made him her father. There were things far more important than genetics.
“All right,” Leia said. “I will meet Skywalker. Let us see how genuine he is.”
Bail hugged her gently. “You have great courage, daughter,” he said softly. “Great courage.”
Leia met her twin brother one week later, in the perpetual gloom of Imperial City’s underbelly, where beings of shadow reside.
He was remote and wary, but that did not matter. In him, she found something she’d never expected to find: a brother in truth, kindred in heart and in soul.
Thus did it begin.

In a way, it's better for Leia to hear the truth about her parentage from Bail. But at the same time, she's younger than she was in RotJ, so it'll likely be more difficult for her to accept. And that, compounded by the fact that she learns that her brother is Luke Skywalker, who she knows of as a cruel heartless man, must make it so much harder on her.
she realised that the revelation about her brother was not the shock it should have been. Somehow, it was as though she’d already known. As though a part of her that she’d never realised was lost had been found. The sensation was very odd; odd, but not unpleasant.
I like this, although it seems to me a bit off, unless Leia has spent a significant amount of time around Luke to have sensed such a thing.
Unless you are referring here to the knowledge that she has a brother, not that her brother is Luke?
He was remote and wary, but that did not matter. In him, she found something she’d never expected to find: a brother in truth, kindred in heart and in soul.
LOVE this!!!
Wonderful, K_A.

I really loved the way you've played this. Bail telling Leia was just right. I could just picture her reaction, Carrie Fisher's brown eyes flashing with the news. Great job so far. I look forward to seeing how the siblings react to each other and where you are going to take it.
Great job.

Lady-Kenobi: Thanks, glad you liked!
Jesina: I like this, although it seems to me a bit off, unless Leia has spent a significant amount of time around Luke to have sensed such a thing.

Yes, the latter -- on some level she remembers not being alone... even though they were very young when seperated. And there's also the intuition from the Force, as well. It's kind of supposed to be a nod toward Leia's "somehow I've always known" in Jedi.
Hope that clears it up a little.
Jedi_BMK: "Rather interesting"... is this good?
Can't wait to see where this all goes (and where it came from).
... not entirely sure what you mean. If you want more background to the story, check out "Shining Down the Years" through the link above. Otherwise just hang around as (I hope) it will become clearer as you get into the actual story.
EDIT: RebelMom: Thank you!
Dianethx: I look forward to seeing how the siblings react to each other and where you are going to take it.
The actual beginning of the story skips ahead six months, so by that stage Leia and Luke are relatively well-acquainted... just so you know what to expect. The prologue was intended as seperate to the rest of the story -- you'll see what I mean when I post the next part. Thanks for the comment!

Wow, great start. Leia's reactions were very appropriate to her character at the time and I'm glad she's able to see Luke as a kindred spirit, as they're meant to be. I'm so glad you started this sequel.

That's okay. Prologues can start anywhere from 10 minutes before Chapter 1 to several years. I look forward to their interactions.

Wow. This is really good, Knight_Aragorn Both stories are very well done.
I have one question though. Where exactly are we in the Saga? A New Hope timeframe?
[face_approving] I liked that you had Bail tell Leia about her parentage.
I'll be keeping an eye on this.
I take it that you like Lord of the Rings? I like it, too. I like mixing Star Wars and Lord of the Rings But not in the normal way...

Ahhh! I want more.
But that was very good. Very interesting that Leia knows already. That I had not expected. Perhaps Bail is wiser in the Jedi, in telling her the truth - or perhaps Bail simply learned from Luke's experience that lying = not good results. And thus begins what will not be an easy situation for Luke. Here's to hoping he can do this.
I'm so pleased you've started this! And thanks for the PM!

DarthIshtar: Thank you! Glad you're reading.
GreatOne: Thanks.
Dianethx: Thanks, Diane. I originally wrote the story without the prologue, but I thought I'd better add something to explain the background for those who haven't read "Shining Down the Years". For that reason, I think the prologue kind of stands out a little from the rest of the story. Or maybe I'm just being paranoid.
CommanderK23: Where exactly are we in the Saga? A New Hope timeframe?
More or less. Things are a little different, but it's around there somewhere.
I'll be keeping an eye on this.
Thanks!
And re Lord of the Rings, yes I do like it but not as much as I did a year and a half ago when I chose my username... *shrugs* But I'm used to it now.
I like mixing Star Wars and Lord of the Rings But not in the normal way...
This sounds interesting...
obaona: Ahhh! I want more.
It's coming...
And thus begins what will not be an easy situation for Luke. Here's to hoping he can do this.
*cue evil laugh* You'll see.
Geith_Jiseo: Thank you!
JediMaster_Jen: I can't wait for the next part when Leia and Luke meet.
Um, actually they don't again for a while. The next post is set six months on. But thanks anyway!
VaderLVR64: Her reaction is very much what I would expect.
Thank you... Leia doesn't always cooperate when I write her, so I'm glad you thought her characterisation rang true.
On to the next post...
