Poof has a love-hate relationship with the Saga. On the one hand, it’s where he has his shinning moments as a Jedi Knight on the Jedi Council. On the other hand, he dies during the Saga era, and that wasn’t much fun at all.

I'm finally here, and loving every word. grin

Even the daunting sight of Imperial Palace – usually enough to fill Luke with a dull kind of resigned dread – was almost welcome after days of Jelsu’s eager and inherently false deference.

This is a testament to your writing skill, I think, that even such a pragmatic line is so vivid and says so much about the character.

He heard the distinctive hiss of his father’s breathing apparatus and the heavy fall of boots, and turned from the view. Vader approached and halted, waiting; Luke dropped to one knee, bowing his head. “My lord Vader,” he murmured.

This really surprised me, and yet, what a great way to demonstrate how much more thoroughly evil Vader is in this story than in canon, to have his own son address him so.

You want her, though, something deep inside of him whispered. Like you’ve never wanted anything else. You know she’ll never have you – not willingly. But if you ask… If you ask, he would give her to you in an instant. She would be yours forever…

Luke felt dizzy. No, he couldn’t. Not even…

No.

Wow. I really, really like this. The unrequited feelings for Mara together with the conflicting pulls of Dark and Light . . . that's really well done.

Not his to give. Not mine to take. The thought was so vehement it almost hurt.

*bounces excitedly* That's the Luke I know and love, all right! grin Plus, even though it's worded so simply, it's absolutely perfect, just as it should be. Not a single wasted word; it all has meaning.

So blatant. Part of Luke was furious to be manipulated so clumsily; part of him was thrilled, so thrilled. Like a small child. Call me Father. Vader knew his weaknesses well, that much was sure.

Oh, how sad. You do a beautiful job of conveying Luke's inner conflict, and as oba says, that's so cruel, how Vader uses him. sad

An invisible hand caught Luke and threw him backward. He wasn’t expecting it; and so his head impacted sharply on the wall behind him. He slid downward.

shock shock shock

“The next time you refuse me, son, you will die,” Vader said at last, and turned on his heel with a flick of black cloak. He stalked away.

Hmmm. This, together with the fact that Vader has obviously asked this before, makes me think that this could come to a head fairly soon. thinking

Luke ignored her. He touched the back of his head, looked at his fingertips. They were wet, slimed with sticky crimson blood. He gathered himself and stood, and was almost dropped back onto his knees by a wave of dizziness. He thrust out a hand to steady himself, and his fingers left a trail of red on the mirror-finished wall. He drew a breath; the nausea subsided, and he turned his head. Mara was staring at him.

That's remarkably vivid. Excellent job.

“What did he do to you?” she demanded, her voice different. Softer and fiercer.

Oooooh, Mara's softening towards him. This could be very good. After all, in canon, Mara believed in the ultimate justice of Palpatine's New Order. It was the sudden realization that Palpatine had lied to her that truly shook her convictions for the first time, and Mara doesn't support anything she doesn't believe in. This could definitely have potential.

Next: A certain green troll makes an appearance with some words of wisdom...

As could this. thinking

This is really a wonderful story, and beautifully executed. I'm definitely on board for the rest of it. grin

It was on her fifteenth day in the darkness of the Nirauan cave when Mara Jade awoke to discover a rescuer had finally arrived.
It was not, however, any of the potential rescuers she would have expected.
It was Luke.

Caught up. happy I've been meaning to read for a while, and I'm afraid I'm not very good with leaving comments -- can I just say I love where you're taking this? love kiss

And good stars, your Vader is making me want to kick him. o.O Which, you know, would probably make me hurt my foot a great deal, but I'm sure you get the picture. So manipulative. shock

Ben I want to kick less, but still want to kick. tongue He's reminding me (and this will make no sense if you haven't read Orson Scott Card, I'm afraid) of Commander Graff from Ender's Game at the moment. Using Luke for some unknowable purpose, but loving him to some extent all the same.

I do really want Luke to get a happy ending, though. sad If not, send him these from me. wink

hugs kiss hugs

obaona: It is a hard place for Luke to be. And you’re right in that it was cruel of Vader to extend that closeness that Luke wants so badly and then retract it again. I can see Anakin being a very emotionally manipulative person, even before his fall. And if it’ll get him what he wants… he’ll use anything.

If only he realised that all Luke wants from him is a single word of genuinely-felt affection… sad

You better give Luke a happy ending, darn it! (And I know you won't answer that.)

Hehe. mischief

BrokenNose: Yes, holding your breath isn’t a great idea… mostly because the ending still a while away yet! wink But getting closer…

blush Thank you so much! Characters mean a lot to me when I’m writing, so I really appreciate it. happy

Mirax-Jade: shock Yes, that would have been slightly awkward. *mind boggling at what might have happened* grin

Mara… pending

tongue

dianethx: He wouldn’t be Luke if he didn’t come to that conclusion, I think… And yes, he knew he was being manipulated. I imagine he’s become proficient at picking that up, by now. sad Thank you! happy

Jedi_BMK: No, Vader’s not being such a good dad. Maybe he should suggest a father-son game of football to get Luke on his side. Or maybe they could go fishing… wink

I'm wondering what Mara would have thought since it sounds like she was eavesdropping.

thinking That’s an interesting thought. She was around, but didn’t hear everything… Her reaction would have been a little different, I think, if she realised how much of an unwitting part she’d just played.

And LOL, these guys are always stubborn. Would we have them any other way? wink

I'm not in the mood for gurnpy old man Yoda.

Gurnpy? tongue I think I know what you mean. And you’ll see. happy

RedGold: Luke’s natural dark side is so much fun to play with though… Can you blame me? tongue And there’s always going to be that little voice that says, But what if…? It’s how he deals with it that will decide his future…

She opens to him and he walks away. Argh!

Hehe. All these unrequited loves to torture readers with… wink

RebelMom: No Anakin hiding there

Doesn’t look that way, does it?

his life expectancy isn't very great at the moment.

Since when has a Skywalker paid any attention to that little detail? tongue

And he does need a hug. But who’s going to give him that? wink

Jesina: Vader’s good for mood swings… so was Anakin, come to think of it. thinking

blush Thank you!

Gabri_Jade: Good to see you! grin

Vader’s very focused on his ambitions at the moment. He sees Luke, to put it frankly, primarily as a tool to these ambitions. For this to change… would take something pretty drastic. thinking

Glad you liked Luke’s moment of conflict. It gives a glimpse into something that is constantly going on beneath the surface, something that’s usually kept so tightly suppressed that we don’t see it. It also shows just how much Mara means to him… and how much potential for manipulation those feelings have.

blush Thank you so much for reading and for the feedback. Great to have you on board! happy

Jedi_2B: Thank you! grin

vader_incarnate: Great to have you reading, and, sure, you can say that… tongue Glad you’re enjoying it.

Which, you know, would probably make me hurt my foot a great deal, but I'm sure you get the picture.

tongue Yes, I do… And I’m afraid I haven’t read that book you mentioned, but I have heard that he’s a great writer. I’ll have to add it to my ever-growing list of books to read. *sighs* You’d think, working in a library, the list would be getting shorter, not longer… tongue

Ben is in a very difficult position. He kind of brings it on himself, in a way, but it’s difficult nonetheless. And as for the ending… hehe. You’ll see.

Luke does have a hug coming pretty soon… and let’s just say, it’s not anyone you’d expect it to be. mischief

JediFalcon: Good to see you back again. “Poor Luke” seems to be a common reaction here… Are people trying to tell me something? tongue

maramijade: I don’t know… Mara herself isn’t exactly being as loyal as she should be when it comes to Luke. She’s a bit of a wild card… thinking

Thanks to everyone for reading! The next post should be up over the weekend. happy

Okay, so here's the next post. Sorry there was a bit of delay on it. Evil DRL, evil... tongue

Luke was kept busy with duties on and around the capital, and couldn’t make his way to Dagobah until almost a month later. Vader largely ignored him, and Luke took care to stay out of the Sith Lord’s way. Palpatine said nothing to Luke about the incident: either Mara had failed to report it, or Palpatine was keeping his own counsel on the matter.

Perhaps he hoped to pit father against son, and claim whoever emerged the strongest. It wouldn’t surprise Luke. So often, he felt he was little more than a player in the invisible games between Sith Master and Apprentice, a pawn in their endless power-struggles.

Luke found time to make a stopover on Dagobah on his way back from a meeting with a number of regional governors. He’d been less than welcome, having been sent to collect details on the use of Imperial funds.

Luke set his ship in orbit over the green-blue mass that was Dagobah and closed his eyes. He breathed in and out slowly. At first, he sensed nothing but the teeming wildlife of the planet below: the constant flow between life and death intrinsic to any natural setting. But after a few minutes, something else brushed against his senses, a barely-there wafting tendril of the Force that guided him downward.

Luke’s hands danced over the instruments. Before long, he was touching his small cruiser down on a relatively flat piece of ground and lowering the ramp to step out.

The air was close, smelling warm and earthy. Luke’s boots sank into thick mud; he pushed a low-hanging vine out of the way and stepped forward. He could sense…

His eyes fell on a small being, standing silently by a rotting tree trunk a few meters away. It barely reached Luke’s waist and had pale-green skin and large pointed ears. He’d never seen a creature like it before, in all his trips around the galaxy.

As he stared in wonder, he felt the strange Force sensation deepen. It was an odd feeling: strong, but subtle, with a power he’d never encountered. One that had nothing to do with brute strength or dominance and everything to do with insight and understanding.

Luke crossed to stare wordlessly at the strange creature. It returned his scrutiny, looking up at him with large dark eyes that seemed to contain an ocean of serenity. Luke made his decision. Dropping to one knee in the mud before the creature, he bowed his head. “Master Yoda.”

The creature said nothing for a time, then shifted. “Heh,” it said, an odd sound, almost a chuckle. Luke raised his head, meeting those deep eyes.

“Know you, I do,” the Jedi Master said, in a strange gravelly voice. “Watched you, I have. Long have I watched you.” He raised the stick in his hand to gently poke Luke’s knee. “Long have you wandered.”

Luke met his gaze unblinkingly, and the small creature nodded and turned. “Come,” it said. “We have much to discuss.”

Luke stood, brushed the clinging mud from his knees, and followed the ancient Jedi through the swamp.

Yoda’s hut was small – Luke practically had to crawl inside. But it was warm and light and strangely welcoming. Yoda made some kind of stew, and Luke ate in silence. The taste was unusual, but not unpleasant.

“Far have you come, hm?” Yoda said, after a while.

“I suppose,” Luke replied warily.

“Yes, far.” Yoda limped across to a bench, shifted a coiling snake out of the way. He put his bowl down and turned back. “Waited for you, I have.”

Luke set his own bowl down and looked away. It had begun to rain; Luke watched the water drip from the ledge of the small window to his right. The rain made it dark outside, darker than night.

“Paths of shadow have you walked,” Yoda said. The small creature’s voice had changed, becoming grave. Luke looked back to find deep eyes watching him. “Places of evil. Yes?”

Luke held the Jedi Master’s gaze without emotion. “Yes,” he said. A pause – Yoda seemed to be waiting for more. “You know this already,” Luke added. “Master Yoda.”

Yoda made an odd snorting sound. “Well do I know this,” he said. “Lost, you were, in these places. In your father’s darkness, in the shadows of your own mind.”

Luke looked downwards. Yoda shuffled closer. “Much anger there is in you,” he said quietly. “Much fear. Smother them, you do, and more powerful they become.”

Luke looked up, and saw the intensity of the ancient Master’s gaze. “The dark path,” Yoda said. “Walked it, you have, and turned back. But forever will it dominate your destiny.”

His gaze held Luke; he was captive in its power. But he forced himself to look away. “I know,” he said softly.

“Yes…” Yoda said. “You do.” He reached a hand and touched Luke’s chest, pressing his three broad fingers to Luke’s dark tunic. “Allow the dark things to prosper again, you must not. Fight them you must, each moment of each day. Never allow them the release they demand.” His voice dropped lower. “And feed them, you must not.”

Luke lowered his head. “Yes, Master.”

“Silence is your refuge, mm?” Yoda withdrew his small hand. “Hide in the silence, you do. Bury your pain and your anger there. Yes?” Luke didn’t respond, and Yoda turned, shuffled a few steps and turned back. “Grow there, they will. Grow more powerful, until contain them, you cannot. Destroy you, they will.”

“I am in control of my feelings,” Luke said. “They do not control me.”

Yoda examined him for a long time, and then said, “Hmph.” He turned, sat on a low chair. He suddenly seemed exhausted. Luke looked at him in concern, and the small Jedi said, “Eight hundred years, have I taught Jedi. And never… never have I seen one like you. Not even your father was so conflicted.” The ancient Master spread his stumpy fingers. “Lightness and dark, silence and fury, hate and love and fear. All these things within you, a maelstrom striving against itself.” Yoda fell silent for a long time, and when he finally spoke again, he sounded wearier than ever. “Is this… how it is to be?” The words were soft, so soft that Luke barely heard them. Spoken to the damp air and the rain, not to Luke.

There was no answer, and Yoda lifted his eyes to Luke again. “Old, I am,” he said. “Old, and weary with times long past. I cannot help you, except for this: guard yourself well, and beware the Emperor. Your strength must flow from the Force at all times, and not from your anger and your fear. Corrupting agents they are, debasing the true power of the Force. Trust in the Force and in yourself, and all will be well. Your stillness…” He was silent a long time, and then he lifted a hand, pointing a stumpy finger at Luke. “Use it wisely, and shield you, it will, from the chaos inside. Save you from the fire in your soul.

“Use it badly…” The ancient Jedi shook his head slowly, his eyes dark. His voice dropped. “Doom will come, to us all.”

He sat back then, closing his eyes, almost limp with exhaustion. Luke sat in confusion. The words of the old Jedi conflicted, denying and undermining one another. But he could feel the power within them: could feel that they meant his life or his death. More, they meant hope or eternal darkness for the galaxy.

“I won’t fail you,” Luke said quietly. “I will not fail you.”

Yoda said nothing. Luke looked at him, and he seemed trance-like, almost unconscious. Luke helped the Jedi Master to his bed, lifting the blankets around his small body. The light of the old Jedi’s life was flickering, fading; Luke could sense it, now that Yoda’s task was done. He sat with him through the night. Towards morning, Yoda’s pale-green eyelids flicked, and Luke leaned over him.

“Master Yoda?”

The ancient master turned his head and looked at Luke. “To the east,” he rasped. “Beyond the dead tree, and past the lum-frog mounds. A cave.” He paused, took a ragged breath. “Go there, you must.”

“What will I find?” Luke asked softly.

“What you take with you,” Yoda said. “Only what you take with you.”

Luke sat back in confusion, but he sensed Yoda was not done. The old master was very close, now, to the end of his life. “Soon,” Yoda murmured, as though hearing and confirming Luke’s thoughts, “very soon. Night will fall. Forever sleep…” He opened his eyes then, fixed them on Luke. Luke could feel him desperately reaching for his last vestiges of strength. “Confront your father, you must. Confront him, and you will be a Jedi.” Yoda seemed not to notice Luke’s sudden consternation at these words; his eyes drifted over Luke’s shoulder. “Strong, the Force is, in your family,” he murmured. “Pass on all that you have learned. You bring… the new. A new age…”

He was fading fast. Luke swallowed his shock and leaned closer, to catch the old Jedi’s quiet words. “Remember,” Yoda breathed. “A Jedi’s strength flows… from the Force. Beware the dark things, and trust… in the Force. Trust… trust…” His voice trailed away.

“Yes, Master,” Luke told him, and added softly, “I won’t fail you.” He watched as the old Jedi’s eyes closed, as his ancient body loosed to stillness. Luke sat back, and felt the passing of something vast within the Force. Not gone, but… somewhere else. He bowed his head.

When he looked up, the blankets were empty.

Luke touched them with his gloved hand, and looked upwards. Just the ceiling. He looked at the blankets again, and said, “Peace, Master Yoda. Wherever you are. Peace.”

He rose after a few minutes and left the Jedi Master’s hut. The rain had stopped, but the night was still very dark. When Luke looked back, the warm lights had faded, and the hut was in darkness.

Luke made his way to Yoda’s cave.

...but what will he find there? I'll say this much: it won't be what you're expecting... wink
