RE: Legacy of Light (OT AU -- L/M, L/H, Ben, Vader) UPDATED 2/13
Whee, the next post!
Vader largely ignored him, and Luke took care to stay out of the Sith Lord’s way. Palpatine said nothing to Luke about the incident: either Mara had failed to report it, or Palpatine was keeping his own counsel on the matter.
*sighs* Poor Luke. It's still so sad that he and Vader are like that (I was just thinking today how ironic it was that his old lightsaber is the only real thing Luke has of the man who used to be his father, despite living in such close proximity to his father himself - okay, maybe not a particularly original thought, but it did strike me as interesting
), but I find it encouraging that Mara might not have reported the incident.
Luke crossed to stare wordlessly at the strange creature. It returned his scrutiny, looking up at him with large dark eyes that seemed to contain an ocean of serenity. Luke made his decision. Dropping to one knee in the mud before the creature, he bowed his head. “Master Yoda.”
Oh, I like this very much!
It's very perceptive of Luke, and a great way to show how this Luke's experiences with both Light and Dark would have given him a greater depth of wisdom on which to draw in such situations.
Not even your father was so conflicted.”
Wow, is that ever saying something.
The ancient Master spread his stumpy fingers. “Lightness and dark, silence and fury, hate and love and fear. All these things within you, a maelstrom striving against itself.” Yoda fell silent for a long time, and when he finally spoke again, he sounded wearier than ever. “Is this… how it is to be?” The words were soft, so soft that Luke barely heard them. Spoken to the damp air and the rain, not to Luke.
This is truly excellent. I can really see Yoda saying these things.
But he could feel the power within them: could feel that they meant his life or his death. More, they meant hope or eternal darkness for the galaxy.
And that's something that I'm not sure canon Luke ever really appreciated until afterward. What a burden for this Luke, to know that truth so well.
Luke touched them with his gloved hand, and looked upwards. Just the ceiling. He looked at the blankets again, and said, “Peace, Master Yoda. Wherever you are. Peace.”
Very nice touch.
He rose after a few minutes and left the Jedi Master’s hut. The rain had stopped, but the night was still very dark. When Luke looked back, the warm lights had faded, and the hut was in darkness.
Luke made his way to Yoda’s cave.
And you leave it there???
*sighs heavily* More soon, maybe? [face_hopeful]

One that had nothing to do with brute strength or dominance and everything to do with insight and understanding.
I love this line.
You write Yoda very well. I loved the exchange between them...Yoda didn't seem as harsh as he was to Luke in ESB. Too bad you killed him off already.
Very curious as to what Luke will find...I have my thoughts on that, but I'll keep them to myself for now.

LOL, Yoda’s good at being obscure. Comes with that odd syntax, perhaps…
And that’s an interesting comment about the cave. The way I figure, it’s a very ambiguous place. It has the ability to show you things that exist inside of you, things that you weren’t even aware existed…. Luke’s a little wiser in this version than in canon, and he’s going to have a very different experience.
Thank you!
Jedi_BMK:
That troll enjoys causing trouble.
LOL, you might say that. And yes, Luke is conflicted. Both he and Yoda realise that, but Luke seems to think he can handle it. Only time will tell whether he’s right or not…
Redgold:
I'm supposed to be asleep at the moment so don't tell anyone I'm here...
RedGold wasn’t here…
Yes, Yoda has some good advice – if Luke can just figure out exactly what he was saying.
Nevermind:
You’re right – Yoda’s practically the only person who hasn’t tried to manipulate Luke into doing what he wants. Yoda realises that Luke would pick that up instantly, so instead he’s using a policy of complete honesty, and I think Luke really respects that.
And R2-D2??
That’s a thought…
RebelMom:
Thank you!
Luke’s experiences have made him far less impetuous than canon Luke. He’s a lot more careful, a lot warier. Good in some ways, bad in others…
Jedi_Falcon:
Thanks!
Gabri_Jade:
You’re absolutely right about the lightsaber – that’s a major part of why it’s so important to Luke. Like Ben said, it’s not just a weapon in his mind… It becomes almost a symbol to him.
And Mara’s definitely an enigma.
As for the comparison between Luke and Anakin – the way I figure it, Luke has a lot more forces at play on him than Anakin did. Internally and externally… He’s torn in a lot of different ways, between an array of loyalties.
And that's something that I'm not sure canon Luke ever really appreciated until afterward.
That ignorance was probably a good thing – such a burden is not an easy thing to bear…
The next post should be up within the next few days, so you don’t have to wait too long…
Jesina:
Thank you!
I actually had fun writing Yoda. I went back and watched ESB again and actually listened to what Yoda told Luke, rather than tuning out… It was pretty interesting. Yoda’s such a cool character to play around with.
And I wonder what your theories are…?
The next post will be up within a couple of days – possibly Wednesday, if DRL cooperates…

I quite agree with you about the Luke/Anakin comparison. That makes perfect sense.

Jesina:

Gabri_Jade:
More is coming right up...
skywalker64089:
Hmm... I'm getting this strange feeling you'd like an update. Wonder why?
Luke found the cave easily, less because of Yoda’s directions than because of the coldness he could feel emanating from the place. He stood in indecision for a long time before finally working up the nerve to descend into the shadowy hole.
Only what you take with you,
Yoda had said. Luke hesitated, then reached inside his cloak to pull out his father’s lightsaber. It gleamed on his gloved palm in the half-light as he looked down at it; then he closed his hand over it firmly. He knelt and placed the weapon on the ground, along with the blaster from his hip-holster, the small throwing knife from his wrist-sheath, and the pencil-thin blade from his boot. The small pile of weapons sat, forlorn on the dark wet ground.
Luke straightened, looking over at the shadowed hole. Why would Yoda have instructed him to come to this cold place? Was it a test? The darkness he felt chilled Luke, seeping down somewhere inside of him unpleasantly.
He took a deep breath then clambered down the uneven ground, into the hole. Inside it was colder still, and damp from the rain. Water dripped somewhere in the shadows, and the sound had an odd, vaguely sinister resonance. Luke walked forward cautiously, his senses alert. A striped snake coiled on a root protruding from the cave ceiling, its flat eyes seeming to follow Luke as he passed. The darkness grew deeper as Luke walked forward: not so deep it was impenetrable, but deep enough to be unsettling. Ahead, there was a curve in the passage, sharp enough that Luke couldn’t see around it. Luke slowed his pace, tensing in readiness. It would be the perfect place for an ambush…
No. Yoda wouldn’t send him into danger, surely.
And yet… something told Luke that he was not alone in this cold place. Something waited… Luke whirled around the corner, hands held defensively.
There was no one there. Luke lowered his hands, frowning as he looked around the dark grotto. Shapes in the darkness – gnarled roots protruding from the cavern walls. Dripping water.
Nothing else.
Luke turned back—
Something slammed into his legs.
Luke looked down, startled. A child stood there, pale-featured in the gloom, arms tight around Luke’s dark-trousered legs.
Luke stared in disbelief. The child looked up at him, eyes wide, lips curving upwards. As far as Luke could tell, the child was about two or three years old.
It lifted its arms as Luke stared, and said, “Up.”
Numbly, Luke bent and lifted it. The child laughed as he straightened, and Luke met gleeful blue eyes, the same shade as his own. The child’s hair gleamed in the gloom, but it was too dark to tell what colour it was.
Luke turned in bewilderment. The child – a boy? – had come from the way he had: how was that possible? What was he doing here? His bright clothes were soft and fine – Luke didn’t know much about children’s wear, but he could tell these must have been expensive.
He looked at the boy again in acute puzzlement. The child’s eyes had never left him – he was looking at Luke with a strange fierce joy.
“Dada!” the boy said, and laughed. He reached a pale hand, touched Luke’s hair lightly. “Your hair’s funny.”
Luke blinked at him, and the child laughed again, a peal of joy so natural and intense that it seemed to fill the dark cave, pushing the coldness back into the rocky ground, vanquishing it with spurting warmth.
The child hugged him tightly, pressing his face to Luke’s shoulder, his soft hair tickling the underside of Luke’s throat. Then he squirmed downwards, and Luke had to release him. His arms felt strangely empty without the little boy’s warmth.
He watched as the child skipped away from him. “Catch me, Dada!” his voice floated back. “Come and find me!” His voice echoed oddly, as though coming from far away. He disappeared around the curve in the passage. Luke frowned and stepped after him.
Somehow, he was not surprised to find only dark emptiness awaiting him. He turned in a circle, as though the boy with his fine bright clothes could be hiding somewhere in the gloom. But there was nothing.
Luke stood in the cold darkness for a long time.
When he left the cave, it was raining again. The water seeped down the back of his collar, cold and wet against his neck. He bent to pick up his weapons; paused a moment, in the rain, to finger the sleek silver of his father’s lightsaber.
Then he turned on his heel, and strode for the ship.

Grrr at DRL. Bad Sith Lord! No biscuit!
The last few chapters were intense. Loved the scene with Luke and Yoda. You portray Yoda very well...
Hmm...I'm assuming that the child is Luke's son, but of course, I could be wrong.

Interesting scene in the cave. I liked the fact that Luke was wise enough to know that he didn't need his weapons. Much more mature than one may expect. However, I'm still not entirely sure what the boy represents. Is he a sign of things to come or a manifestation of Luke's inner desires? There is much to consider. Well done.

I agree with RedGold, I must consider this! You did a great job with Yoda (I always find him difficult to write, so I'm jealous!). Another great chapter, but that's no surprise!

some how I guess he won't find his face in Vader's mask. . maybe Leia's? or Mara's. . . if he faces his father at all. ..
His hesitation at confronting his father is . . . reasuring? . . . intersting to say the least. That alone proves that he may very well want to save his father as well, do as he did in the OT But is Vader able to be saved. .. is Anakin really there still. . .
