Poof has a love-hate relationship with the Saga. On the one hand, it’s where he has his shinning moments as a Jedi Knight on the Jedi Council. On the other hand, he dies during the Saga era, and that wasn’t much fun at all.

Jedi_BMK: You and your redhead assassin… tongue She’s… elsewhere, at the moment. But we’ll see her again, don’t worry.

RebelMom: Don’t worry, that was the last cliffie. The finale is all in one piece. I wouldn’t be cruel enough to split that up. tongue

Senator_Leia73: *passes more tissues* wink

dianethx: Well, I’m glad someone likes the cliffies. wink

Loved that Luke chose to send the data on, knowing he would be discovered and then to go into the lion's den. Took great courage.

Courage, or a complete lack of self-preservation… Probably a bit of both. happy Glad you’re enjoying the story.

skywalker64089: Um… skippy??? *blinks* *sighs deeply* I’ve gone all this time without copping a kangaroo reference – just had to ruin it, didn’t you? wink Never actually saw the show – before my time, I think. Anyway. Yes, VADER is going to be facing some conflict soon. And intense covers this next scene nicely. devil

Jadeling: Yes, Luke got to tell Vader a thing or two. But there’s lots of anger happening, however hard he’s trying to suppress it… And there’s an update coming right up. grin

Katrina42: Well, it’s out of my system now – no more cliffies from here on. happy I promise!

Sithspawn: No, aggravating Vader isn’t smart if you want to keep breathing. But Luke’s past caring, I think, at this point. And as for the next post… you’ll see. But yes, it is very intense.

Mirax-Jade: Don’t boycott! There won’t be any more cliffhangers, I swear! wink Glad you like Luke and Vader scenes. There’s a big one coming up very soon. grin

GreatOne: Anakin Skywalker turned Darth Vader is truly as slave... by his own will.

Yes, so true. But whether Anakin realises this … thinking Thanks for reading!

maramijade: Yup, gotta love that dramatic tension. wink

RedGold: Self-preservation doesn’t seem to be a family trait, does it?

NeverMind: Luke has learned a few tricks about manipulation himself

I’m surprised that more people didn’t comment on the fact that Luke was actually being fairly vindictive in using Anakin’s past against his father in that way -- even if it was warranted. So, yes, there is another side to Luke that showing through, at what is probably the worst possible time… All that anger and hurt isn’t healthy.

Jedi2B: Thank you! grin

kyp_durron_fan: Glad you liked it. happy

Apocalyptic_Jawa: Hi! grin Thanks for taking the time to read through. Yes, characters in an AU can be tricky – their reactions have to be realistic to their circumstances, but you don’t want to deviate too far from their basic personality. Glad you’ve liked the story. happy

And at last... wink

The throne room was decorated in tones of black and silver, and filled with a gloom so deep that light seemed to fall into it, swallowed forever by roiling shadow. Vader was silent at his side as Luke walked forward, as they climbed the steep stairs to the viewing alcove at the top. The curved throne there was turned away, facing the distant stars.

Vader halted at the top, Luke stopping at his side. The throne turned slowly to face them. Palpatine looked at Luke from beneath a deep ebony hood, yellow eyes gleaming. Luke’s gaze was caught by a flash of silver down by man’s hand. It was his father’s lightsaber. Luke’s eyes narrowed. Palpatine smiled, stroking the silver weapon with wrinkled fingers. Luke looked away, re-gathering his shroud of stillness around the anger that threatened to spill through him. He had no right, no right at all to touch that hilt.

Something flickered within Vader, standing silent by Luke’s side. Luke looked at him sidelong, but whatever that momentary slip had betrayed was gone now.

“Young Skywalker,” Palpatine said. “You will not need those.” He flicked bloodless fingers, and the cuffs dropped from Luke’s wrists. Luke flexed his fingers, met Palpatine’s gaze blankly. Palpatine leaned back. “You know why you are here,” he said.

“To witness the destruction of the Rebellion,” Luke said.

Palpatine leaned forward, yellow eyes widening. “Yes,” he said. “Yes. You accept, then, that the Rebellion must die?”

Luke’s gaze went past the Sith, out the clear transparisteel. The Rebel fleet and the Imperial navy were locked in desperate battle outside, beyond the reach of the Death Star deflector shield. Luke could sense Leia, out there. Not in the space battle – on the moon, he thought. The Rebels had clearly chosen to ignore to his warning. Luke was disappointed, but not surprised. It had been a desperate hope.

Luke watched as a ship burst into flame. He couldn’t tell from this distance whether it was Imperial or Rebel, but the death trembled in the Force, adding itself to the multitude of deaths flickering against his mental shields. The Rebels were losing the battle. And Leia… She was down on that moon. He was sure of it, now. What if she died? His own death he could accept in an instant, but to think of Leia lying prone, her life-blood spilling…

“You seek to goad me to the dark side with this battle,” Luke said aloud. “You seek to turn my anger at their deaths to your advantage, to win from my rage what you could not gain from my pledged allegiance.”

“Very good,” Palpatine murmured. “You see a great deal, young man.”

Luke met his gaze. “I do not need your false flattery, Palpatine.”

Palpatine’s eyes narrowed, but then he smiled: a wide, reptilian curving of his thin lips. “You will make a fine Sith,” he said. “A pity you have not the courage to make the turn yourself. It would be such a waste for you to be destroyed in the process.” Malice oozed from yellow eyes, from a mouth without warmth or humanity.

Luke was silent for a moment. At last, he said, “If I were to turn, it would not be to your advantage, Palpatine.”

The Sith narrowed his eyes, this time in thought. “Oh?” His eyes flicked to Vader. “You think to support your father’s bid for my throne?” His lips curved again and he laughed, throwing his head back and spreading his hands. “Do not play with him, boy,” he said chidingly. “We both know that your father has not the fortitude to rule. He makes an excellent underling, yes, but it is plain that he would quickly destroy himself, were he left to his own devices.”

Vader’s head came up. Luke hated Palpatine, suddenly, for stating so blatantly his father’s weakness. It was the same thing that Luke himself had told Vader earlier, but to hear Palpatine – to whom Vader clung to so desperately – say the words with such denigrating smugness… “I seek to serve no one,” Luke snarled.

Palpatine smiled. His hand touched the silver lightsaber again; he ran a white finger along its gleaming length, the touch slow. Caressing. “Do you seek rulership for yourself, then?” His voice was soft.

Luke’s eyes dropped to the saber.

“You do,” Palpatine said. “You seek power, child. Oh, how you want it. I see the hunger within you.” He leaned forward. “So close, you came, when you first joined your father at my side. You tasted it then, but held yourself back. The words of your Jedi Master whispered in your mind, and he hindered you though he was far away… prevented you from taking what was yours to claim. Never could you fully embrace the darkness that you wanted… the power, the glory you still desire.”

“No,” Luke whispered. “I do not seek…”

“But you do,” Palpatine said quietly. “Oh, you do.” The Sith rose from his chair, walked toward Luke. “Did he tell you it would destroy you? He feared you, feared your power. Feared that you would take the glory that is yours by birthright. That old man, the man who raised you and shaped you and used you… He lied. He lied with every word, and shaped a trap that bound you.” Palpatine stopped close. “Now you see beyond his lies. Now you see what you can become.” His eyes seemed to shine suddenly against the darkness. “The galaxy will tremble before us, Luke Skywalker.”

Luke turned away; spun back, thrusting out a hand. “No!” he snarled, and Palpatine stumbled backward, an expression of shock on his face. Luke strode forward. “You old fool,” he sneered. “Did you think I would be caught by your web of lies? I do not need you. What use have I for an ancient cripple, infirm in body and mind?” Luke lowered his chin, gloved hands curling to fists. “I need no one,” he said. “The galaxy can tremble before me, and me alone.”

Palpatine lifted his hands, his face twisting in fury. He pushed a wave of dark energy at Luke. Luke lifted his hands and repelled it. He advanced on Palpatine.

The Sith Lord retreated a step, raising his hands again, wrinkled fingers splayed. Baring his teeth, he sent an arcing bolt of blue-white energy toward Luke. Luke opened himself, and felt the energy dissipate across his skin, the crackling heat insignificant beside the fire in his mind. The blazing fire…

So much… So much that it made him want to drop to his knees for the glory and the honour and the power and the pain, oh, the pain… He could show them all. All those who had told him he was too weak, too gullible, too foolish for greatness. For all the times he’d reached for warmth and received coldness, for all the times he’d been abandoned in silences and turning away. For all the hurt, the hurt that never left him.

For Ben, betraying him by not being his father; for the Force, making him its tool.

For Mara, in all her contempt and coldness.

Luke half-closed his eyes, lost in the rapture of the dark. Then he opened them; turned his head and looked at Palpatine. Palpatine drew back. But the Sith had reached the wall, now – there was nowhere left to go. He raised his wrinkled hands again as Luke stalked forward, motion as futile as it was desperate. Luke slammed the Force into the ancient Sith, bodily and mentally; a blow so hard that Palpatine fell to his knees, so hard that his control of the dark energies slipped and ran.

Luke’s lips curved into a smile as he looked down at Palpatine, sprawled on the floor before his glory. He lifted his hand. The silver lightsaber sprang through the air, humming to life with a glow like fury; like death. Luke caught it, swung downward—

And his ice-blue blade met one the colour of blood.

Luke twisted. Vader towered over him, his dark armour reflecting the faint lights of the chamber. Luke stared at him, and Vader said, “No.”

Luke narrowed his eyes; drew his lightsaber back and swung at his father. Vader batted the blow away, and Luke slammed another onto his blade, and another, each blow more desperate than the last. He was so close… shadows sang in his mind; anger and glory, thrumming and pulsing and seductive.

He couldn’t… allow…

He kicked Vader’s chest plating, and the Sith Lord tumbled backward down the stairs, landing heavily below. Luke swung and stalked back toward Palpatine.

“Luke!” Vader called. Luke ignored him, lifting the tip of the blade to Palpatine’s throat. The Sith stared up at him, yellow eyes wide. Luke smiled slowly.

No, Luke.” Somehow Vader was back at his side. His lightsaber was unlit, this time. “Do not do this.” His gloved hand closed on Luke’s shoulder.

Luke lifted his hand, and Vader stumbled back. Luke swung his lightsaber to point at Vader’s chest. “Do not try to stop me,” he said.

The Sith Lord made no move to raise his own blade. “Do not do this,” he repeated.

Luke lifted his blade higher and stepped forward, forcing Vader backward. “You want to use me,” he said. “Just like all the others.” His eyes narrowed. “I know what you are.”

Vader lifted his hands, the hilt of his unlit lightsaber gleaming darkly. “Luke,” he said. “Son. I only—”

The lightsaber blade darted higher, a whisper away from Vader’s helmet, from severing his head from his neck. It trembled there, taut. Vader stopped speaking.

“All I asked from you was one word!” Luke snarled. “One word, to say you cared. But you couldn’t even give me that.” He stepped forward, and Vader drew back. “Not even that. So many times I reached for you, with ever the same response.” Another step. “Contempt,” Luke spat. “All you gave me was contempt.”

Vader’s head didn’t move; after a very long moment, filled only with the hiss of Vader’s respirator and the ragged sound of Luke’s breathing, the Sith said, “I have wronged you, Luke. Wronged you grievously. I…” His voice faltered. His head shifted, and he said, “This is not the way.” He opened his left hand toward Luke, as though the burning blade between them did not exist. “Please, Luke. Please. Darkness is not the way.”

Luke tilted his head, eyes narrowed at Vader. He was silent a moment; then, “You’re telling me… not to turn?” he said slowly.

“You…. cannot….survive this, Luke,” Vader said. “You give too much, hold nothing back. The darkness will eat you alive. It will subvert you, violate you. Enslave… you.” The words came with a strange awkwardness, as though spoken in an unfamiliar language. “Luke, I…. do not wish that.”

Luke stared at him. Then his face twisted in anger, and he raised the lightsaber. “You’re lying,” he snarled. “You’re trying to undermine me!” His voice dropped, shivered. “You’re jealous of my power, of all that I am. All that I can be.” He swung his burning blade toward Vader, but slowed as the Sith Lord failed to move.

Luke glared. “Lift your blade!”

Vader remained motionless. “I will not fight you, Luke.” He paused, then added sadly, “I have brought you… far too much pain already.” He flung his lightsaber away.

Luke looked at him. “I will destroy you,” he said desperately.

Vader inclined his head. “Then do so, my son.” He looked up again calmly.

Luke stared at those empty eyepieces; lifted his lightsaber. He reached for the coldness and glory that had filled him before, but felt only confusion. He closed his eyes, thought of Ben’s face. Anger began to return, warm and welcome. He thought of Mara, and betrayal and hurt tingled through him. They built momentum…

He thought of the little boy from the cave: the joy in those blue eyes, lit only for him.

How can I betray that? Luke wondered, and felt the glistening emotions collapse. The lightsaber in his hands extinguished, clattering to the ground, and Luke fell to his knees, bowing his head.

What have I done?

He opened his eyes. His father knelt before him, the movement gentle. He reached for Luke’s shoulder, gloved fingers opening hesitantly… Quietly malicious laughter sounded behind Luke, and Vader looked up.

“Well done, Lord Vader,” Palpatine said. “Clearly, the boy has no discipline. He will fail as a Sith, I see now.” Vader withdrew his hand and stood.

Luke closed his eyes.

“Now, young Skywalker,” Palpatine hissed somewhere above him, “you will die.”

Luke did not move. After a moment, white fire seized him; burning along his nerves, it traced paths of searing pain throughout his body. Luke fell to the ground. Another wave of lightning hit him, and screams began to bubble on his lips, ripped from his mouth by seething waves of anguish.

Suddenly it stopped. Luke lay exhausted for a moment, his throat raw. He was numbly surprised to find he was still alive. He rolled over, watched as his father threw Palpatine down the pit in the centre of the throne room. Palpatine’s screams descended; there was a massive, silent wash of blue-white energy, and then nothing.

Nothing but the sound of Vader’s rasped and painful breathing.

Luke made his way down the stairs, somehow, and over to where his father was slumped. He looked into dark eyepieces, and was unable to think of a single word.

“Son…” his father rasped. “The mask… help me take it off.”

“But… you’ll die,” Luke said.

“That’s…inevitable now, Luke.” Gloved hands found his, squeezed. “Help me.”

Luke reached and removed the layers of mask. Finally, he found himself face-to-face with his father. His gaze took in pallid skin, blue eyes. Scars… so many scars. Something warm touched Luke’s cheek, and he brushed at it. His fingers came away wet.

Anakin Skywalker’s ravaged lips curved into a faint smile, full of pain. “Luke…” he said weakly. “Oh, Luke. My poor boy.” His hand rose to touch Luke’s cheek, his gloved fingers light and trembling. “Don’t… waste these on me.”

Luke bent and hugged his father, for the first and only time. When he pulled back, Anakin Skywalker looked at him in surprised delight. “Sister…?”

“Leia Organa,” Luke confirmed.

Anakin let out a breath of a laugh, his blue eyes – sky-blue and shining; the exact shade of Luke’s own, and of the child’s in the cave – filling with wonder. “Like your mother,” Anakin said. “Should… have guessed.”

Father and son gazed at one another. Luke could feel his father fading. He closed his eyes. “I’m sorry,” he whispered raggedly. “I’m so sorry.”

Anakin laughed again, only this time there was a choke somewhere within it. “You… sorry?” he echoed. “Ten minutes, Luke. Twenty years… how long my sorry spans.” His hand closed on Luke’s, its warmth felt even through the thick glove. “Be stronger… for it. Survive. Great strength…son. Great strength… is yours. Never… forget…” The light in his eyes was dimming. Luke leaned forward, watched as his father’s eyes closed, as his body loosed, became still.

Luke shut his eyes, opening them to find only empty armour.

Anakin Skywalker was free.

“Peace, Father,” Luke whispered into the silent gloom. “Go in peace.”

For some minutes, he sat alone in the darkness by the twisted remains that had bound his father for so long. Then Luke rose, and went to find a ship. The tide had turned; the battle was almost won. Luke Skywalker’s part was finally over. He was free, also.

As Luke launched his chosen shuttle, he wondered: Why does freedom feel so empty?

There was no response in the untwinkling stars, nor in the white-hot explosion a few minutes later as the second Death Star met its fiery death. There was no response at all, save for the stillness of Luke’s heart.

He thought of the lady and her child, victims of Palpatine’s egomania; blasted to nothing with the rest of Alderaan two years ago. “Fair lady,” Luke whispered to the stars, “you are avenged.” They shone on, silent and coldly beautiful. Luke turned his face away.

Leia contacted him an hour later, as he sat in orbit over the blue-green mass of Endor, staring out at dark, empty space.

“Luke,” she said, sounding vastly relieved. “You’re all right.”

He wasn’t so sure, so he said nothing.

“I… felt… that you were here,” Leia continued, hesitant as always regarding her Jedi abilities. “What happened? The last I heard, you were about to be captured for treason. Were you on the Death Star before it blew? I thought I felt… something.”

Luke was silent for so long that she said his name, her voice uncertain.

“I’ll tell you… some other time,” he answered her, his voice dull.

There was a silence, and Leia said, “What’s wrong, Luke?”

He lowered his head into his hands. “Luke?” Leia repeated, then, more loudly, “Luke!”

Luke raised his head. “I’m here,” he said. “I’m here.”

“What’s wrong?”

Luke stared out at the gently spinning stars. “I’m… tired,” he whispered. “Oh, Leia. I’m so tired.”

Another pause. Leia spoke quietly: “Come down to the Sanctuary Moon, Luke. Come down to us. It’s all over now.”

Luke closed his eyes. “No,” he murmured.

“Luke?”

“He was good, in the end,” Luke said. “He saved me, Leia. He saved us all.”

“Who?” She sounded perplexed, afraid. “Luke, what are you talking about?”

“Our father,” he said tonelessly. “Our father. Anakin Skywalker.”

There was a long pause on the other end. How she hated being reminded of Vader. “I see,” she said at last. “Well, I’m glad, Luke.”

He smiled without humour to hear her tell so blatant a lie for the sake of his feelings. “Yes,” he said softly.

“Will you come down and see us, Luke?”

Us, he noted. Not me. She must have caught her smuggler, then, after everything. That was good, he supposed. “I have to go, Leia,” he told her, staring through the viewscreen.

“Where will you go?”

Where will you go? Now that was an interesting question. Luke thought for a moment, and said, “Anywhere.”

“Luke?”

“I can go anywhere I want to,” he said. “Isn’t it wonderful, Leia? Anywhere.” He said the word slowly, savouring its unexpected freedom.

“But, Luke…” She was speaking carefully now. “That isn’t a place.”

“No,” Luke murmured. “It’s every place.” He turned his eyes to the distant stars and said softly, “There’s someone… someone I need to find.”

“Oh.” He heard the way she smothered her disappointment for his sake, and loved her for it. “Well… good luck, then.”

“May the Force be with you, Leia,” Luke said, and, lower, “Take care.”

“You too,” she said. He flicked the comlink off then, and set the hyperspace coordinates in the ship’s navicomputer. He depressed the switch and the shuttle went to hyperspace.

Luke stared ahead, watching the lines of hyperspace churn past the viewscreen. They were cold and alien and beautiful, and he closed his eyes. They continued on, past the small ship, stretching away into the horizon; to the place where future met past, and all were one.

The ship sped on toward tomorrow, leaving strewn in its wake the silent shadows of today.

Yes, there’s an epilogue. So don't kill me yet. grin

Oh man that was intense. I was surprised to see Anakin stopping Luke from turning to the dark side. What a great twist. Poor Luke. His father finally shows that he does care and then he dies. the kid never gets a break.
Epilogue is good. Can't kill you - you wouldn't be able to write if you were dead. wink

Really intense! I loved the way you twisted ROTJ into a reverse of the father/son clash for a while and then twisted it back. Loved that Vader asked Luke not to turn and loved that it was Vader's choice to destroy the Emperor. Really, really cool.

I assume Luke is looking for Mara... hope so, anyway!

Great job.

Excellent post. You did a great job with the throne room and the role reversal. It was good to see Anakin come back in time to pull Luke from the darkness. Luke finally got the father he wanted even if for only a short time. Now let's see if Luke can find what else he's looking for.

RebelMom: Yeah, I puzzled for a while about how to make this different to ROTJ. I considered having Luke fully turn to the dark side… but I didn’t think people would appreciate that much. tongue So I went with this instead.

dianethx: Thank you! grin Glad you enjoyed it. I figured that we don’t really need a re-write of the throne room scene in ROTJ, and anyway, Luke’s character is different here so he would react differently. Maybe not for the best, but anyway… As for Mara – well, it’s not Artoo he’s looking for, I’ll say that much. wink

skywalker64089: Hmm, very eloquent… tongue

Jedi_BMK: Yes, poor Luke. To finally get Anakin after all that time, only to lose him again... sad Let’s hope he has better luck with this other thing he’s looking for. mischief

GreatOne: grin Thank you!

Katrina42: Thanks. Epilogue coming right up… happy

RedGold: Well ‘intense’ was more or less what I was aiming for, so thank you! The way Luke was suppressing it all, it had to be pretty extreme when it finally ‘exploded’, so to speak. Thanks for reading!

Jadeling: Yup, no more secret agent-ing for Luke. He’ll have to get used to doing what he wants rather than doing what everyone else tells him to, now… Epilogue is coming right up! And I think you’ll like it. wink

maramijade: Whether she chooses to heed any last commands, given the rather altered circumstances between she and Luke… grin We’ll see.

JediFalcon: Thank you! happy

AJ: Ewoks? I could add one, if you like… tongue Maybe not. Thanks for reading!

Well, this is it! A big thank you to all you guys for reading. hugs It's been great to receive such wonderful feedback, and I hope you've all had fun reading the story.

Having said that, though, there is a little more to come after this... I have a vignette set afterwards that I'll be posting as well. It's really best if read seperately to "Legacy of Light", so I think I'll post it in a seperate thread. I'll PM anyone who would like to be PM'd when I do so -- otherwise, just keep an eye out. It'll probably be next week sometime.

And now, the Epilogue... grin Hope y'all like it.

EPILOGUE

It took him three months to find her, amid the chaos of a dying Empire. She’d been undercover when it happened, away on some planet on the Outer Rim. How she must have reeled. In a single day, she had lost everything: her position, her home, her identity.

But Mara Jade was a survivor, if nothing else.

Luke put his training to use, and those same skills she had used to uncover his treason so long ago led him to a small cantina on an industrial planet somewhere in the Mid-Rim territories. It was located in the spaceport district, and bustled with vibrant, varied life.

He stood in the shadows of an alleyway opposite all through the long afternoon, watching the flow of beings in and out of the drab building. She came out just as the first stars began to sparkle overhead, leaning to adjust a sign in the window. Her red-gold hair was tied back tightly, but shone like stardust in the glow from nearby streetlights. Her pants were loose and flowing, her pale wrap-around blouse sleek and practical. She finished with the sign, stood motionless for a time before turning to frown up the gloomy street in his direction. Luke melted back into the evening shadows, and she turned and went inside.

The evening trickled to night, bright stars shining in the sky as the hours slipped by. The last patrons staggered out of the cantina early in the morning, the warm lights glowing through the grimy windows flicking to darkness soon after.

He was waiting behind the cantina when she stepped out the side door, the light from the kitchens spilling with her into the dark alleyway. She had donned a long dark jacket, and a bag was slung over her right shoulder. He watched as she called goodbyes to the other staff. The door swung shut behind her, casting the alley in darkness once again. She took three steps down the alleyway, and she stopped.

Luke stepped forward, into the pale sliver of moonlight falling between rooftops high above. She looked at him, her face pale in the gloom. “You,” she said, her voice flat.

Luke inclined his head, watching her carefully. “Mara,” he said softly.

Her lips compressed, and she shifted the bag on her shoulder. “I thought I sensed you earlier,” she said. “What do you want?”

A single step brought him closer. “We need to talk,” he told her.

“I have nothing to say to you.” She lifted her chin, looking at him with cold eyes.

Another step. “Then perhaps you can listen,” he said quietly.

She lifted a slender hand. “Come no closer.” Her eyes burned through the gloom. “What use are your excuses to me, Skywalker? You destroyed my life, my home.”

“I destroyed Palpatine—” Luke began.

“He was my life!” she said angrily. “And you killed him, Skywalker.”

“Only because it had to be done,” Luke said. “You know he was evil, Mara. I know you do.”

She turned away from him, toward the shadowed wall, rough with layers of dirt. “I was loyal to my Emperor,” she said. “You, Skywalker… You don’t even know what loyalty is.”

“Mara…” Luke stepped closer, but she thrust him away.

“Leave me alone.”

He caught her wrist, the material of her jacket soft beneath his desperate grip. “I can’t,” he said raggedly. “I can’t, Mara.”

“Get off me!” she snarled.

Sudden light flashed through the darkness, and Luke blinked, dazzled, and released her. “Mara,” a voice said from behind. They both turned. A large orange-skinned alien loomed in the open door of the cantina, its shadow shivering in the light. “Is he bothering you?”

“I’m fine,” Mara said tiredly.

“Are you sure?” The being stepped closer, eyeing Luke.

“Yes, Arthos. Thank you.” The alien didn’t seem to believe her; it stood where it was on the edge of the light, watching them.

Mara turned to Luke. “See what you’ve done?” she muttered. She turned and began to walk down the dark alley, away from the light spilling from the cantina. Luke followed.

She stopped a few meters from the end of the alleyway, standing to the side of the moonlit sliver of paving. Luke stopped close behind her. “I suppose,” she said softly, “you want to know why I never told Palpatine of your treachery.” She turned her head, and her hair gleamed faintly in the moonlight.

“Why?” Luke asked quietly.

He heard her sigh – a gentle sound, weary with resign. “I tried,” she said. “I tried so hard to tell him. But the words would never come. I couldn’t bring myself to do it.” A long pause, and she said, “I suppose that makes me as culpable as you, in a way.”

There was a silence between them. Luke said into it: “He was an evil man, Mara.”

She bowed her head.

“You must know,” Luke continued softly. “I saw how he used you. How he manipulated you.” He touched her shoulder lightly. “You served him well, Mara. You gave him your life, your dreams, your intelligence, your honour. He squandered it all.” His voice dropped. “He never deserved your loyalty. But you gave it all the same. That is to your credit.”

She turned to face him. After a long moment, she said, very softly, “It was a nice dream, if you didn’t look too closely.” She bowed her head then, and whispered, “Wasn’t it?”

He touched her pale cheek. “It was,” he said.

She drew a deep breath, raising her head. She looked at him for a long moment in silence, and said, “You’ve done something foolish.”

He looked down. Her fingers touched his chin, lifting his eyes to hers. “Tell me.” It was not a request.

So he did. Standing in the shadows of the alleyway, he poured out his pain and his shame, his hate and his fear and his glory. She listened in silence. When he was finished, she turned to stare across the bare street. “I see.” He said nothing, and she turned back, looking at him with dark eyes. “What a mess you’ve made.” A pause. She lifted her hand, pressing delicate fingers to his dark tunicfront, the middle of his chest. Softly, she said, “This will take a long time to clean up.”

He caught her warm fingers, gently lowered her hand. “Ah, Luke,” she whispered in sudden helpless despair. Her eyes rose, shimmering with a liquid vulnerability she could never speak. “How do we do this?”

He touched her cheek again, very lightly. It was little more than a brush of his fingers across her soft skin, but it was enough for now. “One step at a time,” he said.

“And the first?” she asked quietly.

He smiled. “Let me walk you home.”

She watched him, her eyes deep and still. “I need no escort, Luke,” she said. “I can defend myself.”

“I know you can,” Luke said, and well he did. “And perhaps you do not. But I do.”

She looked at him in silence for a long, long time. Then she smiled, and in her smile he saw the brilliant smile of a young boy with blue eyes and fine bright clothes. “Well,” she said, “Luke Skywalker. You had best walk me home, then.”

She took his arm, and her nearness spilled warmth through him, a balm for all the coldness. She walked by his side through the darkness, and Luke Skywalker found his peace.
