This is the actual beginning of the story for anyone who's confused, and is set six months on from the prologue. It's a fairly long post, but I thought it best to get the intial stuff out of the way so we get into the action sooner... always a good thing.
And Han and Leia aren't my strong point, so I apologise in advance if either character's personality is off.
LEGACY OF LIGHT
“Han Solo?”
Han Solo looked up. Dust motes swirled through the dingy air of the bar. It was hot, even in here, out of the sun. Outside it would be stifling. Han squinted at the cloaked figure standing by his booth, but couldn’t make out a face under the deep hood. “Depends who’s asking,” he said. “And why.”
“I have a need for a skilled pilot,” the figure said. “A discreet pilot.” Chewbacca stepped out from behind the figure, and rumbled support of the man’s statement.
Han drummed his fingers on the tabletop, pretended to consider. After a moment, he drawled, “I’m listening.” He flicked a questioning glance at Chewie, but the Wookiee wasn’t giving anything away.
The figure slid into the booth opposite Han. He pushed his hood back, revealing lined features and pale blue eyes, hair the colour of mountain snow. He leaned forward, and said, “I need passage to Dantooine. No questions asked.” His accent marked him as an offworlder – it originated somewhere Core-ward, Han thought.
“Just you?” Han asked, and the man nodded. Han leaned back and eyed him thoughtfully. He trusted his instincts, and his instincts were telling him that there was more to this guy than met the eye. But he had to be – what? Sixty? Seventy? It was hard to say for certain – people tended to get old quickly in places like Tatooine.
And there was Chewie’s endorsement. “All right,” Han decided. “But Dantooine’s way off my usual trade routes. It’s going to cost you – say, somewhere in the vicinity of…”
Chewbacca cut Han off firmly then, and Han gaped at him. “No charge?” he spluttered. “Are you out of your mind?”
Chewbacca rumbled again, and Han scowled. “I don’t care if he’s your
mother
, Chewie – I can’t afford to be running all that way with no income.”
The old man held up his hands. “I will reimburse you for your troubles, captain,” he said calmly. “Fifteen thousand, on my safe arrival.”
Han subsided. “How do I know you’ll pay up?” he asked suspiciously. Chewbacca rumbled dangerously, but Han ignored him.
“On my word,” the old man said.
“Your
word
?” Han repeated incredulously. The old man just inclined his head again with that strange dignity. Han frowned. What era did the guy think he was in – the Old Republic? Codes of honour went out with Jedi cloaks, as far as Han was concerned. Relics of the past, and all that. He opened his mouth to say so, but closed it again. This guy was surely a relic of the past himself, if ever there was one.
And Han had a feeling that this old man’s word was about as valuable a possession as he was likely to find on this dustball planet. He drummed his fingers on the tabletop absently, then screwed up his nose and wiped his fingers on his shirt. Chewbacca growled something, and Han said, “All right, keep your fur on.” He looked at the old man. “Looks like you’ve got yourself a transport.”
A few hours later they were underway. It was a twenty-hour trip through hyperspace to Dantooine, during which Han found out that the old man’s name was Ben Kenobi and that he had been living on Tatooine “for some time”. That was about all that Han could get out of him without asking any overt questions. Somehow, though, Han ended up giving the man his life story. The old man listened and murmured ‘Mmms’ and ‘I sees’ in all the right places, and then wandered off looking thoughtful. Han was left wondering just what had transpired. Why had he given all the sorry details of his life to a complete stranger? He couldn’t understand it. And yet it had been his idea – the old man hadn’t pushed or probed. It had just spilled out of Han like so much water from a bucket.
He set the ship computers to auto-monitoring and left the cockpit. The old man was sitting on the lounge in the main hold, frowning to himself. Han didn’t disturb him. Chewbacca was in the cargo area, fiddling with that bowcaster of his – tightening something or other, no doubt.
“All right,” Han said. “Who is he?”
Chewbacca looked up with admirable innocence in his big dark eyes. He rumbled something vague, and Han scowled. “Don’t give me that,” he said. “I have a right to know just who it is I’m transporting.”
Chewie shrugged – one of the many gestures he’d picked up around Han.
“Chewie,” Han said warningly. “You’re not telling me something here.”
The Wookiee went back to fiddling with his bowcaster.
“Chewie,” Han said again. “If you don’t tell me, I’ll…” He trailed off. Chewie looked up and tilted his head inquiringly, and Han grimaced. “I’ll go and do something really stupid, seriously inconveniencing you when you have to save me,” he finished lamely.
Chewbacca wuffed laughter and rubbed Han’s hair with a great furry paw. Then he took his bowcaster and wandered off toward the lounge. Han glared after him, smoothing his hair. “I hate it when he does that,” he muttered. But he was trying to figure out the last thing Chewbacca had said before he passed out of earshot:
Follow your heart and you’ll find out,
the Wookiee had said.
Now what did that mean?
They arrived at Dantooine, and the old man transmitted something over the comm and gave Han landing coordinates. It turned out to be a large hangar bay in a motley of sprawling buildings on a grasslands plain somewhere near the planet’s equator.
“An excellent landing, captain,” the old man said as he unstrapped himself and stood.
“Sure thing,” Han muttered.
A handful of people were waiting outside the ship as they descended the ramp: an older man, a young woman, and another older woman. Han eyed the young woman surreptitiously. She was delicate looking, but there was a fire in her dark eyes that fascinated him. Pale skin, long dark hair – oh yes. She was a beauty, all right.
Her attention seemed to be focused on the old man, though she flicked a vaguely curious glance at Han. “General,” she said to the old man. Her voice was warm. “It is a pleasure to meet you in person at last.” She stepped forward, and the old man caught her hand.
“A pleasure indeed, Princess,” he said. “It has been many years, and what a fine young woman you’ve grown to be.” She was a princess? Han’s heart dropped. No way he had any chance with a princess.
She smiled, and it lit her eyes enchantingly. “Please, call me Leia.”
“Then you must call me Ben,” the old man rejoined. He turned his eyes to the other two: “Mon Mothma,” he said to the woman, inclining his head.
“General Kenobi,” she said in reply. “I cannot tell you how much joy it brings me to welcome you formally to our ranks.”
The old man thanked her, and turned to the other man and shook his hand warmly. “Jan,” he said. “Wonderful to see you again.”
“Good to have you with us, Obi-Wan,” the man replied.
Han was confused and wary. Wasn’t the old guy’s name Ben? Who was Obi-Wan? Could it be an assumed name? And who were these people?
“This is my pilot, Han Solo,” the old man said, turning to indicate Han. “One of the most skilled pilots I’ve ever met.” The man referred to as Jan turned a suddenly intent gaze on Han. “And his co-pilot, Chewbacca of Kashyyk,” Ben concluded.
Mon Mothma stepped forward, eyes on the tall Wookiee. “A pleasure to see you again, Chewbacca. It has been many years.”
Chewbacca growled a greeting in response, and Han stared at him, then glared at the old man. “All right,” he said. “Just what’s going on here?”
The old man smiled that odd smile of his. “In due time, captain,” he said. “First, let me make proper introductions. Princess Leia Organa of Alderaan, Mon Mothma of Chandrila, General Jan Dodonna of Commendor – Han Solo, of Corellia.”
Han’s eyes narrowed. “Rebels,” he said. “This is the Rebel Alliance. Isn’t it?”
“Well done, captain.” Ben smiled again.
“Should you be telling him that?” the young woman – Leia Organa – asked suspiciously. “How do you know he won’t betray us?” Sensible questions, in Han’s opinion. He looked at her again. She’d been eyeing him, but looked away as soon as their eyes met. Han smirked.
“He will not,” Ben said. “And he is owed payment for our passage here – fifteen thousand, I believe, captain?”
“That’s right,” Han said, his grin quickly fading.
He will not?
Why did the man sound so confident?
The princess flicked an unreadable look in Han’s direction. “I take it you are not interested in joining the Rebellion?” she asked.
Han gathered himself and snorted. “Not likely,” he said. “No offence, but I have an allergy to suicide causes. They tend to bring me out in hives.”
The princess pursed her lips. “I’m sure,” she said with heavy scorn. “Don’t worry, captain. You will have your payment.”
“Good,” Han said.
“It may take a little time to retrieve the funds,” Mon Mothma said. “You understand we must spread our resources. In the meantime, you are welcome to stay with us.”
Chewbacca rumbled agreement, and Han cast him a dirty look. He had some explaining to do, that was for sure. “Fine,” Han said. “We’ll stay. Just until the funds come through.”
“Excellent,” Ben said. “Excellent.”
Han flicked another covert glance at the young woman, then looked at the old man narrowly. “Just until the funds come through,” he repeated, and the old man smiled that infernal smile.
Three months later
Han fell into step with Leia, walking down a long corridor. “Hey, Princess.”
She darted a look at him. “Still here?”
He smirked. It was the response she greeted him with every day, and it had become something of a running joke between them. “Sure am.”
Her lips quirked, just a little, and warmth shone in her dark eyes. “I see,” she said. “Still haven’t fixed that junkpile you call a ship, then?”
Han stopped, and she turned to face him, her hands on her hips, a smile hovering near her lips. “Nobody insults my ship, sister,” Han said, crossing his arms.
She smiled. “Oh?”
He shook his head, deflated by that smile. “There’s nothing wrong with the Falcon,” he muttered. “I just… decided to hang around a little longer. That’s all.”
“I see,” she said again, as they resumed their pace. “Don’t you want to spend those credits we gave you?”
Han grimaced. “Used ‘em already,” he said. “Had to pay off some old debts.” Jabba would have been surprised when those credits came through, that was for sure.
“Hmm,” she mused.
“What?” Han said. “You trying to get rid of me or something?”
She lifted her eyebrows and smiled, showing white teeth. “Whatever gives you that impression?”
Han grimaced slightly. Being with her gave him a headache. He bantered to hide his feelings, and she bantered back with saber-sharp wit. But he wondered sometimes just where the banter ended. And why did they end up arguing so often? He thought sometimes she wanted him to say something in particular, but he couldn’t figure out what it was. And other times, it was like she couldn’t stand the sight of him.
And why
was
he still here? He couldn’t figure that out either. Every time he was about to leave, something would come up and he’d end up staying – always ‘just for now’.
Chewbacca seemed happy here, even if the stubborn furball still refused to tell Han how he knew Ben Kenobi. Clearly the Wookiee had had some kind of contact with the Rebellion or its founders previously, somewhere in his two-hundred odd years…
“So,” Han said. “Has your father left?”
She nodded. “This morning. He’s heading to Coruscant, then back to Alderaan.”
“Umm,” Han said. They walked in silence for a while, and she darted an odd look at him. “You’re pretty close to him,” he said eventually.
“I am,” she said. “I admire him a great deal.”
“Oh,” he said.
“What about you?” she asked, after a pause.
“Hmm?” Han murmured absently.
“You never speak about your parents,” she said. “Are you not close?”
Han shrugged. “I never knew my parents,” he said.
She looked thoughtful. “You’re an orphan?”
“More or less,” Han said vaguely. He didn’t like talking about his past, and wondered how they’d ended up on this topic. Somehow conversation with Leia never went the way it was supposed to. Either they talked for hours about minutiae, or he ended up saying something stupid – sometimes accidentally, sometimes not – and offending her.
“Oh,” she said quietly. “It must be difficult, not knowing where you come from. Having to fend for yourself from such a young age.”
Han shrugged again. “That’s just… how it is,” he said uncomfortably.
She didn’t say anything else, but she took his arm as they walked. Han eyed her covertly, and was strangely reassured. He knew they’d be arguing again soon, but this moment of peace was nice while it lasted.
The Rebellion seemed perpetually short of almost everything, and Han was roped into running supplies for various missions. Jan Dodonna eyed him oddly every time he was near, with an assessing light in his eye. Han tried to avoid him.
Leia went away frequently, but never for a very long time. Han was disconcerted by how much he noticed her absence when she wasn’t there. Did she even notice when he was gone?
Ben Kenobi stopped by and spoke to Han frequently, asking how he was. The old man seemed busy, but he always stopped to answer whatever questions Han had. Han usually found a way to edge in a question or two about Leia – amidst other questions, of course, so it wasn’t too obvious. Han learned that the old man was a former general and a Jedi Knight, from back in the days of the Republic.
He’d
thought
there was something different about him.
So long as he didn’t try to push any of his hokey Force religion stuff onto Han, Han didn’t mind his company. He had the strangest impression that the old guy was waiting for something from him, as well…
Even Chewie seemed to be watching him. Han just shrugged and tried to ignore it. Maybe he was being paranoid.
Or maybe not.

Obi-Wan managed to rope Han into joining the Alliance without even trying. That's great. I like the banter you're already introducing between Han and Leia.
And something tells me Leia's frequent absences have something to do with her brother.
Can't wait to see more. Good work.

That was cool how Han got sucked into the Rebellion without even having to rescue anyone.
. Good job with the setup. I loved that Chewie knew Ben immediately and was acting as the honorable being we know that he is.
Looking forward to more.

So Han's 'joined' up with the Rebelion already? Wow. And why am I not surprised that Obi-Wan was able to get him in there that easily.

I'm actually in the process of writing such a story. Which timeframe-wise would be in the 'Beyond the Saga' board. I'm trying to decide if I should post it... but haven't decided yet.

Nice post.
I liked how Han seemed to find himself opening up to Ben so easily. You get the picture that, despite Han's self-reliance, he may be looking to Ben as a father figure.
When Luke enters the mix it should be interesting. Another thing that'll be different from canon is that instead of Luke being a fairly naive farmer from a backwater planet when he meets Han and Leia, he'll be a hardened undercover agent and -presumably- already well trained in the Force.

I like your portrayal of Han. He's still the same man, but it's a different look at him. I think you're showing here the vulnerability that the movies really didn't express.
I liked this line:
No way he had any chance with a princess.
His own self-doubt is showing through, just a bit.
Nice work.

Wonderful.
No overthought theories yet, but give me time.
I really liked Han and Leia - you really nailed them, especially Han. He seems cautious, but still very reckless, in a very Han way - and I like how he got 'roped' into helping the Rebellion, and Jan giving him looks.
