Han had been with the Rebellion for close to six months, on and off, when he was asked to run a transport mission. His passenger was Leia, and their destination was a planet not far from Coruscant. Finally, he was going to have time alone with her. Well, kind of alone. Chewbacca was coming, but Han knew he could rely on the Wookiee to make himself scarce if need be.

But the whole way there, Leia was distant and preoccupied. Han gave up trying to talk to her, and instead sat in the cockpit and glared through the front viewscreen at the mottled lines of hyperspace. Chewie came in and poked his shoulder, growling about sulking, until Han told him in no uncertain terms to go away.

“She’s not interested,” he said. “She couldn’t care less. All right? I don’t care either.”

Chewbacca snorted, but left. They arrived at their destination planet, and Han touched the ship down gently by a dark forest. Leia readied herself. It was deep night, and the only light came from the bright stars overhead. Han tried to get her to tell him where she was going, but it was like prying teeth.

“I shouldn’t be long,” was all she would say. “An hour at most.”

Han watched as she strapped a blaster to her thigh, over dark combat pants. “It’ll be dangerous,” he said. “Else you wouldn’t be taking that.” She frowned at him, and he blew his breath out in exasperation. “Come on, princess,” he tried, one last time. “Let me come with you. Or at least tell me where you’re going.”

“I will not be in danger,” she said, and Han heard the frost of genuine irritation begin to edge her tone. “Stay with the ship. I’ll be back soon.”

Han grimaced and watched as she descended the ramp. He waited until she was halfway to the trees, and darted back inside to grab his blaster. “Stay here,” he said to Chewbacca.

The Wookiee rumbled something to him, but Han was already strapping on his blaster and rushing down the ramp.

He followed her through the forest, keeping his distance. She seemed wary, despite her assertion that there was no danger. Eventually she came to a small clearing. A hooded figure stood in the middle of it. Leia stepped out, and the figure turned toward her.

Sliding behind one of the bushy trees lining the clearing, Han let his hand drift toward his blaster. But he lowered it again – Leia had evidently expected the person. Her pace quickened, and Han watched as she embraced the figure warmly.

“Oh,” she said, her voice muffled as it floated to Han. “I’m so glad to see you.”

Han felt a strange hot sickness rise inside of him, and felt like a fool. Here he was, worried about her, and she was going to meet her… her…

He couldn’t complete the thought. He drew a breath that seemed to hurt, and watched as the figure stepped back. “It’s good to see you, Leia,” a man’s voice said, quiet in the darkness. Han watched as he touched her cheek gently, and wished he was close enough to see his face. He’d better be worthy of her, the nerf-herding kriff.

The figure’s head turned suddenly in Han’s direction, his body stiffening. Han frowned.

“What is it?” Leia asked.

“There’s someone here.” The man’s voice had become low and hard.

Leia brought her hand to her mouth and turned, and the figure stepped around her. A glowing line of red light sprang up in its hands, and Han cursed softly and drew back.

A lightsaber.

There were only three people he knew of in the galaxy who might wield that weapon – one was back at Dantooine base, and the other two were not people you wanted to meet in dark forests late at night.

The figure moved forward with startling swiftness. Its blade flashed, and a low-hanging branch shielding Han from view crashed downward. Han stumbled back, reaching for his blaster, knowing it was too late. He caught a glimpse of a red blade arcing toward him and closed his eyes reflexively—

“Stop!” Leia cried, sounding breathless.

After a moment, Han opened his eyes and was a little surprised to find all limbs intact. A pale-faced young man was staring at him, his eyes strange in the red light. A lightsaber hummed angrily in his right hand, held frozen aloft. Leia’s hand gripped the man’s arm. Han winced involuntarily at the expression on her face as she stared at him.

The young man turned his head slowly to look at Leia. “You know this man?” he said carefully. His voice was odd – so controlled it sounded dead, as though all emotion had been sapped from him via some strange procedure. It was familiar, Han realised. He’d heard those flat tones before, in Rebel intelligence and on Imperial news footage.

“Luke Skywalker,” he said in stunned recognition.

The young man flicked a glance at him, then looked back at Leia. She turned her eyes to Han and pressed her lips together, her expression very, very angry. “I do,” she said, and added with, Han thought, unnecessary venom, “Unfortunately. He’s the one I told you about – Solo is his name. Han Solo.”

Skywalker lowered his arm and turned flat eyes to Han, looking him up and down. “What is he doing here?” There could have been an edge of suspicion flickering beneath those words – it was hard to tell.

“He must have followed me,” Leia answered quickly. “I didn’t know he was there. He was my pilot, for the journey from Dantooine.” She looked at Skywalker with strange anxiousness in her dark eyes.

Han frowned. “Good thing I did follow, Princess,” he said with barely contained irritation. “Considering the company you’re keeping.” He looked pointedly at Skywalker.

“No one asked you,” Leia shot back, her eyes like embers as she turned on Han. “Clamp your hatch for once.”

“I’d love to, sister,” Han said, taking a step toward her. “Clamp it and get the hell away–” He stopped, largely because the tip of the lightsaber blade had flicked up to his throat again. He looked at Skywalker, found the man watching him with an almost bored expression.

“Step back,” the man said lazily.

Han looked at Leia. She pursed her lips and said, almost reluctantly, “Let him approach, Luke.”

First name basis? Han didn’t like this at all.

Skywalker turned his head to look at Leia. “Let him approach,” he said with leaden scorn. “The man is a smuggler of ill repute. Must I remind you what it at risk here?”

“No,” Leia said indignantly. Her voice dropped lower. “I trust him, Luke. All right?”

Skywalker wasn’t pleased. But the blade dropped away, then flicked off. “Very well,” he said. He looked at Han, an odd up-and-down, almost assessing, glance. Then he turned away from Han. “So,” he said to Leia. “How fares the old man?”

“The General sends his regards,” Leia replied.

Skywalker snorted softly. “I’m sure he does.” Leia looked at him fondly, a look that made Han squirm inside. Who the hell was this guy that Leia could look at him like that? Some jumped-up Sithspawned Imperial bootlicker, prancing around in his pretty black outfit with his shiny lightsword. It wasn’t possible that Leia… that she…

“Leia,” Han burst out, “are you out of your mind? This guy is Vader’s son – he can’t be legit. This has got to be a trap. I bet there are Imperials in all these trees, waiting for the right moment to jump out and capture you. Do I have to remind you of the price that the Imps have placed on your head, O royal one?”

Leia turned and glared at him, and her expression held a ferocity that stopped Han in his tracks. It wasn’t the mock-annoyance that lit so much of their banter, but a true, deep fierceness. “I told you to clamp your hatch, Han Solo,” she bit out. “You have no idea what’s going on here. You shouldn’t be here. How dare you follow me? Do you have any idea of what you could have jeopardised?” She paused a beat, then went on savagely, “You do not. You are as ignorant as a nerf to these affairs. So you will not – will not – presume to tell me what to do. Understand?”

“May be if someone actually told me something for once, I wouldn’t be so ignorant,” Han rejoined angrily. “How do you think I feel? You never tell me anything. What if something happened to you, huh?” Leia blinked, and Han blew out his breath in anger. “Ah, forget it,” he said in disgust. With himself, mostly, for letting so much spill out.

Staring at him, Leia opened her mouth, but Skywalker cleared his throat softly. He’d been staring off around the clearing – out of politeness or sheer lack of interest, Han didn’t know. But now the man turned back, and sent Leia an odd look Han couldn’t decipher. Leia flushed a little, evident even in the pale moonlight, and closed her mouth.

What was it with this guy? Han glared at him, and was utterly ignored.

“I must not linger,” Skywalker murmured. “As… enlightening as this discussion has been.” He reached into his cloak, and Han tensed, waiting for the weapon or the descending hoard of Imperials. But neither came.

Skywalker pulled out a small disk and handed it to Leia without flourish.

“Was it difficult to get hold of?” she asked, staring down at the small disk in her palm as though it was a Corusca gem.

“Somewhat,” Skywalker said, after a slight pause. His lips thinned. Leia looked up at him, and her eyes softened. Her fingers closed over the disk. She gently touched Skywalker’s arm with her other hand. “We are in your debt,” she said quietly. “The galaxy is in your debt.”

Skywalker shook his head, and didn’t look at her. “I do what I must,” he mumbled, giving Han a mental start. How many times had he heard Ben Kenobi mutter that, in the same grim tone?

Leia’s dark eyes flooded with sadness. Skywalker turned his head, met her eyes. He placed his hand over hers. After a time, he said, “I must go.”

Leia bowed her head, then looked up. “Take care,” she whispered sadly. Skywalker nodded and they embraced again, Leia standing on tiptoes to rest her chin on Skywalker’s shoulder. They parted, and Skywalker touched Leia’s cheek and stepped back. He flicked a glance at Han and away, then looked back.

Leia turned quickly and glared at Han. “Is there something wrong with your eyes, Captain Solo?” she said frostily. “You seem to be staring.”

“I don’t know if it’s my eyesight, Princess,” Han said. “But something’s definitely not right.”

Skywalker made an odd sound. Han looked at him, and Leia turned as well. Skywalker was looking at Han, his expression distant but strangely intent. “Luke?” Leia said.

The young man’s face flickered, and his lips quirked in something almost like a smile. His face became softer, sadder somehow. “You remind me,” he said slowly, “of a couple I used to know.”

“What do you mean?” Leia asked, after a moment. She must have seen that brief flicker in the man’s face as well.

Skywalker shook his head, amusement fading from his eyes. “Oh,” he said, “nothing. Nothing at all.” He stared at nothing for a moment, then looked up, his eyes flat once more. “Captain Solo,” he said formally, with a dip of his head. Han nodded back warily, and Skywalker glanced at Leia. “Perhaps,” he said quietly, “if you do indeed trust the captain, you should explain some things to him.” Leia frowned. Skywalker shrugged indifferently and turned away. “Goodbye,” he said.

“Goodbye,” Leia called softly. The man lifted a gloved hand without turning, and disappeared between the dark trees. Leia watched until long after he was gone.

When she turned back to face Han, there was a familiar exasperated glare on her face. She planted her hands on her hips. “You had no right to follow me,” she said from between gritted teeth.

“Yeah,” Han said slowly. “Can we discuss this at the ship? As much as I love dark and gloomy forests, you know… this one’s kind of worn out its welcome.” Forests made Han jumpy at the best of times, and knowing that Imperial-sworn Sith progeny walked these woods didn’t improve the feeling any.

I loved the meeting. Figures that Han would follow Leia and jump to jealous conclusions. It is all so sad though. The twins only see each in passing and when they do its so bittersweet. I do like that Luke has given Leia permission to reveal things to Han if she trusts him.

Interesting. Great job showing the dynamics between everyone during the little clandestine meeting. The bond between the twins was obvious and Han's jealousy and protectiveness where Leia was concerned, expecially once he realized who he was dealing with, was well played.

Of course, I'm curious as to who the couple is that Luke thought Han and Leia reminded him of. For now, I'll assume that this will be revealed in due time.

And what could have possibly been on that disk Luke gave to Leia? I wonder... thinking wink

heheh, I think Luke realized what is hapening between Han and Leia even if Leia hasn't. . .

Yeah she probably should tell Han, and I bet that she now has the disk.

Racing home abord the Millenium Falcon, Princess Leia has secured the plans to the Empires new secret weapon the "DEATH STAR." She is delayed slightly when a Star Destroyer pops out of nowhere, Due to Han Solo's steller piloting skills it is only a momentary setback. . .

Excellent post. I loved the meeting (the characterization was great), though seeing the twins so distant from each other was poignant, Leia cold (though in the process of defrosting) and Luke sad in a quiet way...

Some nice characterizations. Poor Luke and Han indeed. Leia seems so cold at times. Too much negativity is going her way.

Han... why must you always jump to that conclusion? rolling_eyes

Again great post applause applause applause applause

You should go for it! Haven't seen a lot of LotR around here... not alot of crossovers at all, in fact.
Well... of the crossovers I've read, this is a lot different in my opinion. But it has a lot of LotR influence mischief But maybe. I want to get a little farther a long though. wink

Loved it! Loved it! Loved it!

I liked Han's initial reaction, and the way he came to realize who she was meeting with.

Of course, I loved the interaction between Han and Leia - you write that very well.

And I look forward to the "He's my brother" line that will undoubtedly appear soon.

Nice work!

I really liked the dynamics of the three. Han so jealous and yet not being able to admit it, even to himself. Leia worried about the mission, worried about Han and his part in it and so concerned for her twin. And Luke, protective and yet still with the edge of darkness around him. Loved that he still had his red lightsaber.

This is just been lovely. Looking forward to explainations!

This post won't be so long as the last couple have been -- the post lengths will vary fairly dramatically from here on in. Some of them are only short, so I'll try to keep up the regular posts to make up for it. If no one has any objections? wink

They walked back to the ship in silence. Halfway there, Leia halted and sighed. Han looked at her quizzically, and she murmured, “He’s gone.”

Han blinked, and she shook her head and strode on. The reached the Falcon. Han nodded to Chewbacca and followed Leia through into the main hold of the ship. She sat at the small table; Han stood on the other side. “Well?” he asked.

She pulled out the little disk again, and stared down at it. “Do you know what this is?” she said softly.

“No,” Han said. “But I can tell you what it isn’t – an asteroid, a tree, an explanation for why the hell you’re so chummy with an Imperial like Skywalker.”

She looked up, and her dark eyes blazed. “On this datacard are the plans that will allow us to destroy the Death Star,” she said. “Luke placed himself in considerable danger to procure these for us. As he does every day.”

Han narrowed his eyes. “He’s a spy,” he said. “Is that what you’re saying?”

“Yes,” Leia said. She lifted her chin. “He is an undercover operative for the Rebellion. One of our most valuable.”

Han sat across from her. “That’s crazy,” he said. “Skywalker is Vader’s son – he’s a Sith in training, for Kriff’s sake. How can he be a Rebel?”

“He is,” Leia said, and sat back.

“He kills Rebels,” Han said. “Daily. Isn’t he one of the best TIE pilots in the Fleet?”

Leia’s eyes darkened, and she looked away. “You heard him,” she said softly. “He does what he must to maintain his cover. This is a war, Han. The lives lost maintaining his position in the Empire mean many more saved elsewhere.”

Han shook his head. “He does what he must,” he echoed. “Sounds like an excuse to me.”

“You have never been in his position,” Leia said. Han looked up at her, and her eyes were suddenly hard. “You have no idea what it takes to live a lie of that magnitude. The sacrifices that it takes, every moment of every day. He barters his soul for all of us, Han.”

There was little he could say to that. “You care about him a lot,” he observed.

She heard him, because her cheeks reddened. She looked away and said nothing.

Han stared at the tabletop morosely. How could she care for someone like that? She was a thousand good things, and Skywalker was… Skywalker. Han found it difficult to believe that the man had any kind of genuine commitment to the Rebel cause. He was probably using Leia, using them all for his own benefit.

“How long has he been an operative?” Han asked.

“Since last year,” Leia said. “He contacted us through General Kenobi, who was living on Tatooine at the time.” She gazed at Han for a moment, and said, “He was raised by the General, you know.”

Han frowned. “What?”

“Luke grew up on Tatooine. His foster parents died when he was very young, and the General raised him from there on. They had a falling out, though, and Luke left. He eventually made his way to the Empire, and Palpatine took him in.”

“So how’d he end up on our side?” Han asked.

Leia pursed her lips. “I don’t know, exactly,” she admitted after a while. “Luke… doesn’t talk much about things that hurt him.”

“I see,” Han muttered doubtfully. Leia looked at him, and Han drummed his fingers on the tabletop. After a while, he said, “You said back there that you trust me.” She lifted her eyebrows, and Han was forced to go on. “Do you?” he asked lamely.

She smiled. “I wouldn’t be telling you any of this if I didn’t, Han.” She stood and walked around the table, brushing her fingertips across his shoulder as she passed. “Don’t let it go to your head.”

Han turned his head and watched as she walked down the corridor, then dropped his head into his hands. She had a unique ability to make him feel as though someone had grabbed him and shaken him until his teeth rattled, and then set him down again delicately and walked away. What was it with her?

He shook his head to clear it, and headed for the cockpit to begin the launch procedures.

Next up: Luke! shock tongue
