Playing catch-up on the boards, and glad I caught this excellent story (and its prequel). I admire the way you're portraying Luke -- tormented, lonely, trapped. And yes, you're doing a good job with Han & Leia's characterizations, too. Looking forward to more.

It was on her fifteenth day in the darkness of the Nirauan cave when Mara Jade awoke to discover a rescuer had finally arrived.
It was not, however, any of the potential rescuers she would have expected.
It was Luke.

Quickly prodding up... Will post replies later. wink

EDIT: Okay, I'm back. grin

Jedi_BMK: I feel sorry for Luke with all the manipulations he has to put up with. Everyone wants something from him and it doesn't sound like he is able to worry about himself. Very much like the Luke we all know. More concerned about not failing others than he is about himself.

Self-preservation isn't really Luke's strong point, is it? In this OR in canon. wink

I can't wait to see just how that vengeance comes about.

Unfortunately that's not for a while.... worried

maramijade: Don't be too sure. Events aren't all that different. You'll see what I mean...

Jesina: Have I told you that you have an amazing ability with description?

shock I'm actually really surprised that you say this, because I thought scene description wasn't one of my strong points. So... blush thank you!

Katarina42: New reader? grin Hi! Hope you stick around.

RebelMom: Luke is so lonely.

He needs a hug, doesn't he? wink Unfortunately Mara is less than willing to oblige just now...

Jedi-2B: Hi! Great to see you. I loved your Pendulum series (Is that the right title? I think it is...) so it's awesome that you're reading this!

I admire the way you're portraying Luke -- tormented, lonely, trapped.

worried That makes it sound so awful... it's true though. tongue Poor Luke, I seem to have a tendency to torture him. *sends hugs* wink

Glad you've liked the story so far!

DreamofKenobi: The tension between Luke and Mara was especially well done.

Thanks! I had loads of fun writing all this tension. Torturing characters = dancing Just kidding. wink Hang around, because there's more tension coming in the next few days... And it's Leia and Han this time. happy

Gah...missed another post.

Loved the L/M interaction in this one. So he has vengeance in mind...Interesting...that kind of sounds like a Dark Side influence, though.

Ana_Labris: he's not the farmboy we know..

RedGold: I think I'll stick around to see what happens next!

Please do! happy

Sithspawned: So he has vengeance in mind...Interesting...that kind of sounds like a Dark Side influence, though.

After rereading this, it does make it sound like I enjoyed seeing Luke tormented, lonely and trapped. LOL! No, but you're doing a wonderful job writing his characterization.

“Look, Chewie, I’m telling you – this one goes in the red slot. The other one goes in the blue. Okay?” Han sat back as Chewbacca stuck his head out of the open hatch on the Falcon’s top side and howled vehement disagreement. Han leaned past the Wookiee to shift the offending part, only to have his arm batted away. Han scowled. “Will you listen? You can’t—”

The docking bay door slid open. Han sat up, twisting around. Ben Kenobi stepped inside the bay, and Han frowned. The old man appeared to have aged ten years since he’d last seen him.

“Captain Solo,” the General said.

“You okay?” Han leaned over the edge of the Falcon.

The old man shook his head, looking uncharacteristically preoccupied. “Have you seen the Princess?” he asked.

“No, not for a while,” Han said. “I think she had some kind of meeting this morning. You could try over in the east annex.” The old man murmured his thanks, and Han asked, “What’s up?”

“A great evil has been perpetrated,” Ben said, his voice hollow. The old man’s eyes rose to meet Han’s, and the expression within them made Han recoil. “Many lives… have been lost. Many lives.”

Han frowned as the old man left. He turned and looked back at Chewbacca as the Wookiee rumbled concern.

“Dunno, Chewie,” Han said, looking toward the closed door. “Sounds like more of his crazy Jedi stuff to me.”

Chewbacca snorted at him, pulling himself out of the hatch and sliding down to the floor. Han frowned. “Where are you going?”

To find out what’s happened, the Wookiee replied, and left.

Han sat back and scowled at nothing. “Well, don’t expect me to go running after you,” he said aloud. He turned his attention back to the open hatch and the parts underneath. Half an hour later, Chewbacca still hadn’t come back. Han blew his breath out in exasperation and dropped down to the floor. “Fine,” he muttered. He attempted to wipe the oil from his hands, but it refused to budge. He shrugged.

The corridors were strangely empty as he walked out of the docking area and down the long passages toward the eastern side of the base, where the command centre was. He realised why when he reached the central control room and found it full to brimming with personnel. Han sidled in as far as he could, spotting Chewbacca off over the other side of the room with Ben Kenobi.

Leia was at the front of the crowd, wearing her usual no-nonsense cream jumpsuit. Han knew as soon as he saw her that something was very wrong. He couldn’t say how: she didn’t appear visibly distressed, and her voice as she spoke was firm, though slightly lower than usual. But her eyes stormed with a strange fire that Han couldn’t name.

“…we must go on with our plans,” she was saying. “We must not allow this tragedy to stay our hearts’ thirst for justice. The Death Star must be destroyed, more now than ever.”

Han turned to the young man standing beside him – one of the pilots. Wedge Antilles, a young Corellian. “What’s happening?” he asked quietly.

Wedge’s face was pale as he leaned toward Han. “The Death Star has been used,” he said quietly. “Alderaan was destroyed for being sympathetic toward Rebels.”

Han felt the blood drain from his own face. “Alderaan…” His eyes instantly cut to the front again, to Leia’s white face, those dark shimmering eyes. Leia’s homeworld, her people and her legacy. Her father. His admiration for her increased a thousandfold. What strength, to get up and speak after such a blow.

Leia had paused while the crowd murmured assent. Now she looked around the room. When she spoke again, her voice was soft but clear. “For the people of Alderaan,” she said, “we must fight on. We must not let them down. We must not.”

The crowd of Rebels murmured again, and someone began to clap. Slowly at first, then steadily, the applause spread through the room, the sound an affirming of Leia’s strength, her will and determination. She closed her eyes as it died away. “Thank you,” she said quietly. “Thank you all.” Then she opened her eyes, and set her lips. “We will proceed as planned,” she announced. “Non-essential personnel are to re-locate to the base on Yavin IV. Our operative on the Death Star will plant the information to bring the Death Star here in the next twenty-four hours. All squadrons are to go on high alert from this point on. You will be briefed by your individual squadron commanders.”

The crowd began to break up after that. Han pushed his way towards Leia, but wasn’t even halfway there when she and General Dodonna ducked out through a door to the right of the room. Han stood and stared after her as the room cleared around him.

After a while, he felt a hand on his shoulder. It broke him out of his trance. He turned, and Ben Kenobi stood at his side, Chewbacca behind him.

“Trust your heart,” Ben Kenobi said softly. “Trust what it tells you, my boy.”

Han frowned and opened his mouth, and Ben Kenobi smiled at him wearily and turned for the door. Han shook his head, turning to Chewbacca. “Come on,” he mumbled. “There’s still work to do on the Falcon.” Surprisingly, Chewie didn’t say anything: he just followed Han back to their ship.

Han put all the effort he had into the Falcon. Between he and Chewbacca, they had it at better than working order by nightfall. Han sat up into the night, tweaking the repulsion manifolds long after it was necessary. Chewie eventually gave up trying to dissuade him from wasting his time and disappeared off to bed.

Han tightened the connectors on the repulsor-panel, glad that he had something to do. If he didn’t have something to occupy his hands right now, he was sure he’d go mad with wondering if Leia was okay. Wondering if he should go try to find her…

No. She had friends here, people who had known her since she was a child. She didn’t need the fumbling comfort of a smuggler she hardly knew. Maybe she’d call her Imp boyfriend, and he could comfort her.

Han quashed the bitter thought. She didn’t deserve it, not even in the privacy of his thoughts. If Leia felt the way Han knew she did about Skywalker, then there had to be something good in the man, something Han wasn’t seeing. Han knew it, and couldn’t pretend otherwise any longer.

It was approaching midnight when Han heard the click of boots on the durocrete floor. He turned his head, saw a pair of compact grey boots. He knew the walk instantly: knew its graceful firmness.

Leia.

He hadn’t even heard the door. Her feet stopped; she crouched to look at him. He crawled out from under the ship, and she stood. He rose as well, looking at her closely.

Her dark hair was beginning to come loose, drifting around her face in wafting tendrils. Her eyes were dark and dull, and very weary.

“Hey,” Han said.

“Hey,” she said, her voice soft still.

They stood in silence for a moment, and then she said, “I don’t know why I came here.”

Han found himself reaching to touch her soft cheek. His hands were covered in oil, so he stopped just short of touching her. She didn’t pull back.

“I’m glad you did,” Han said quietly. She said nothing, and he went on, “I’m sorry about Alderaan, Leia.”

She reached up and caught his hand, pressing it to her cheek with sudden fierceness. “Han,” she said, her voice ragged. He pulled her into his arms and she pressed her face to his chest.

He held her a long time; she didn’t cry, or say anything. She just clung to him tightly.

After a while she pulled back slightly, just enough to look into his eyes. Oil from his hand had marked her pale cheek. Han brushed his fingers over the mark and said apologetically, “I’m covered in oil.”

“I don’t care,” she murmured. “It doesn’t matter, Han. None of it matters.” She looked at him, her eyes wide and dark, filled with sorrow. And… something else? Cautiously, Han leaned and kissed her, and she kissed him back fiercely.

Their lips parted. Han looked down at her, perplexed. “Leia…” he said, touching her cheek again. “You’re upset. Maybe we shouldn’t…”

Her hands tightened on his tunic, her dark eyes suddenly blazing. “Don’t you tell me what’s best, Han Solo,” she said. “Do I look like someone who would let herself be taken advantage of?”

Han looked into those eyes and said with perfect honesty, “No.”

Her grip eased. “Good,” she said. Then, softly, “I’m sorry, Han. I’ve been a fool. I know you have feelings for me, and I feel the same way. But I thought it was too risky, that I could die at any moment. I didn’t think it was fair to begin something I might never be able to complete.”

Han could hardly believe his ears. He stared at her face, found her perfectly serious. “What’s changed, then?” he asked.

Her eyes met his. “Everything,” she said, and the emotion within those brown eyes took his breath away. “If you’re willing to take that risk, I think it’s worth taking.”

“So do I,” Han said. He kissed her again, felt her relaxing in his arms. But then something else occurred to him and he pulled back to stare at her.

She looked at him quizzically. “Han?”

Han frowned. “What about Skywalker?”

She frowned as well. “Luke?” she said, sounding puzzled. “What about him?”

Han narrowed his eyes in confusion. “You care about him,” he said. “You told me.”

“Yes…” Leia tilted her head. “So?”

Han’s heart plummeted again, and he felt his lips twist. “So?” he echoed. “So what does that make me, Princess?”

She was beginning to look upset. “I don’t understand.”

Han looked at her: her confusion seemed genuine. He closed his eyes. “I’m sorry, Leia,” he said, turning away. “This isn’t going to work.”

“What?” Her voice had a definite edge to it now. “What are you talking about?”

“What am I talking about?” Han echoed, swinging back around. “What am I talking about? Gee, Princess, I don’t know. Maybe I have a problem with you spending your time with Imperial Sithspawned scum like him.”

Leia’s eyes widened, then narrowed. “Oh, really?” she hissed, the light in her eyes suddenly seething. “It’s a good thing I don’t care for your opinion then, Captain Solo.” She spat the words in a way that made them sound worse than foulest swearwords.

“I guess it is,” Han snarled.

“You are the most arrogant, half-witted, stuck-up, good-for-nothing pig I have ever met!” she spluttered.

“Now, sweetheart, don’t get excited,” Han said, with the most suggestive smirk he could come up with. She glared daggers at him, her fists clenching. For a second he thought she was going to hit him, but she spun on her heel and stormed out the door.

His anger faded as soon as she left, and he slid down against the ship, dropping his head into his hands. “Kriffing hell,” he muttered. And then with real venom, “Kriffing Luke kriffing Skywalker.” He closed his eyes.

Han began preparations to leave that night, and had almost finalised everything by mid-morning the next day when the Death Star arrived in-system. Suddenly pilots were scrambling around him as the base went to red-alert. Ben Kenobi wandered over, calm amid the chaos, watching as Han and Chewbacca loading crates onto the Falcon.

“You’ve decided to leave, Captain?” he said.

Han frowned at him. “Yes,” he said firmly, shooting a glance at Chewie, who’d been trying to dissuade him all morning.

Ben Kenobi rubbed his beard. “You must do what you feel is right, of course,” he murmured, and turned and walked away.

Han stared after him, then glared at Chewbacca. “I know what I’m doing,” he said. Chewbacca snorted, but wisely refrained from commenting.

Han saw Leia once over the other side of the room. She ignored him. Well, fine. Let them all see that he was no Rebel, however hard they pushed. He didn’t care what they thought – what she thought. He was no Rebel, and he never would be.

And that was final.

He launched before the Death Star could get too close – he had no particular desire to end up an Imperial prisoner. He snorted to himself. Maybe Leia’s boyfriend could bust him out, if he asked nicely enough. Chewbacca looked at him oddly, and Han scowled. He kept the ship in the mass shadow of the planet, avoiding detection.

The squadrons of X-Wing and Y-Wing fighters launched, shooting away toward the Death Star. Han drummed his fingers on the control board in front of him, then reached for the switch that would take the Falcon to hyperspace. His fingers hovered; he grimaced, then dropped his hand to the comm system. He keyed it over to the Rebel frequency and listened with growing disquiet as the pilots died, one by one.

Soon there were only a few left: Wedge Antilles, Jed Porkins, Biggs Darklighter. Porkins was taken out. Han’s fists clenched. One of those TIEs he recognised – the modified one, with the odd wings. He’d never seen it before, but he knew that characteristic lethal precision via word-of-mouth from his time as an Imperial.

It could only be Darth Vader.

Han looked at Chewbacca. “All right, Chewie,” he sighed. “Let’s do this.”

The Wookiee howled and pumped his shaggy fist in the air. Han grinned. He turned the ship around and they sped toward the Death Star. His shot sent Vader spinning off into space; Biggs took out the other TIE and the laser embankments. Wedge made the shot, and the Death Star was destroyed.

Later, as Han stood beside Wedge to receive his medal on the stone stairs of Yavin base’s huge audience chamber, he met Leia’s dark eyes. His gaze flicked down, then back to hers, and he saw her lips twitch. He winked, lifted his eyebrows. She looked at him coolly. Han smirked, knowing he was here to stay. Whether she liked it or not.
