I'll keep that in mind...

So many ways this could just blow up in their faces.
Oh?
dianethx:
Ben thinking that he was raising a weapon instead of a boy - perhaps he was, perhaps not but it was a lovely post.
Thank you -- I was a little worried about this section. I think Ben came over a little too uncaring which wasn't my intention... hence what I said about his possible self-denial. It's hard to balance that extreme practicality -- almost ruthlessness -- of his with what he feels for the child that he raised.
*shrugs* It comes through a little more clearly later on, anyway. There are actually a lot of similarities between Luke and Ben in this fic in the way they see things, the way they react. Whether that's a good thing...
RebelMom:
Thank you.
Jesina:
The tension is still there, that much is sure, but...it seems like Luke is a little calmer...and Ben less resigned.
Very true -- things have changed a lot since they met in Shining Down the Years.
As usual, your insights are wonderful.
Thank you!

I want to kick Obi-Wan.
Luke.
How horribly you've been used by the people who are supposed to love you ... unconditionally. *still wants to kick Obi-Wan*
Knight_Aragorn, your writing just places an ache in me.
How bitterly sad. (And I still want to kick Obi-Wan! Please tell me Obi-Wan gets kicked ...) Still, as always, (and probably forever
) beautifully written.

I feel bad for both of them. *sigh* I'd say that it's sad that the characters aren't happier but really - how interesting would *that* be?

This story is getting very good. Obi-Wan's ruthlessness is well done; he's not a saint. Not saying he's wrong either; he has the balance the greater good, or what he perceives as the greater good, against Luke's best interests.

You put it perfectly. Obi-Wan's is a very hard position and he's doing -- as you said -- what he sees as being necessary. Whether he's correct....
Thanks to everyone for the feedback! I have to fiddle around with the next post a little, but it should be up within the next couple of days. I'll say this much: it's Vader... Wonder what he wants?

That was very poignant. Your fic has a dark/wistful flavour, an effect not present in everyone's writing...

Hmm... That's an interesting way to put it. Hopefully not
too
dark, because I don't want to put people off... just dark enough that you're wondering what's going to happen to poor Luke next.
On that topic... here's the next post!
After his meeting with Ben Kenobi, Luke returned to his small personal shuttle, secured the lightsaber – his father’s lightsaber – in a hidden compartment, and proceeded to rendezvous with the Star Destroyer
Corybant
in a nearby system. The investigations into Rebel cells in the area – the given reason for his absence – completed, the Star Destroyer left for Imperial Center a few days later.
It was an uneventful journey. The
Corybant
was under the command of one Commandant Jelsu, a flaxen-haired man who was young for his rank – with an eye to rise even higher, if the pandying he was subjecting Luke to was any indication.
Luke was extremely relieved to arrive at Imperial Center. Even the daunting sight of Imperial Palace – usually enough to fill Luke with a dull kind of resigned dread – was almost welcome after days of Jelsu’s eager and inherently false deference.
Alone in his austere rooms later that evening, Luke took the silver lightsaber hilt from his cloak and ran his fingers over its familiar contours.
Your father’s lightsaber,
Ben Kenobi had told him when he’d first given Luke the weapon.
Wear it with honour, Luke.
For a time there Luke had lost his honour, lost his way, come so close to losing everything. But he’d found his path again, and now the hilt was his once more.
He flicked it on and studied the white-blue glow of the laser blade. Like the Tatooine sky, it was clean and clear. Forever unblemished.
Luke extinguished the blade and secured the silver hilt in one of the many concealed niches he’d fashioned in his room.
He received a private summons from Vader the next day, instructing him to meet the Sith Lord at the highest of the Ascending Halls that evening. The Ascending Halls consisted of a series of vast open chambers, each higher than the next, on the upper floors of the Palace. They were used for important balls and the like, to intimidate impressionable guests.
Luke looked down across the two lower levels as he waited for his father, studying them without any real interest. He’d seen them a thousand times before; attended numerous functions within them. The height of this, the highest one, tended toward dizzying, with only a waist-high balustrade of clear transparisteel preventing anyone from falling to their death on the gleaming floor of the hall far below.
The halls were deserted at this time of day, and gloomy; the sun having descended below the Imperial City skyline. During daylight hours light flowed in through immense windows. All the space was supposed to be airy and calming, Luke supposed, but it made him feel watched. Especially in the shadows of late dusk…
He heard the distinctive hiss of his father’s breathing apparatus and the heavy fall of boots, and turned from the view. Vader approached and halted, waiting; Luke dropped to one knee, bowing his head. “My lord Vader,” he murmured.
“Rise, my son,” Vader intoned, his deep voice echoing oddly throughout the vast space. Luke did so, turning as Vader strode to the railing to look out over the polished floors, so far below.
“I have asked you here for a reason,” Vader said, after a few moments. Luke felt dread coil inside of him, and was unsurprised when Vader’s next words were, “Have you reconsidered your response to my proposal?”
Luke looked down, and did not answer.
Vader turned to him. “Think of what we might be,” he said, his sonorous tones low. “Think of what the galaxy could become, under our rule. You have vast potential, Luke… vast potential. I can give you glory and power beyond your wildest dreams.”
Luke stared across at the distant wall opposite. He could feel the powerlust swelling in his father, a tide so dark and so powerful that it frightened Luke. He’d touched a similar hunger, in his darkest hour. And sometimes, sometimes, deep within his mind…
Luke turned his face away from his father.
Vader’s voice fell even lower, becoming caressing, enticing. “Whatever your heart desires, Luke. It will be yours, if you follow me. I will make it so.”
A sudden vision of Mara flickered in Luke’s mind, and he frantically quashed it. He’d kept his feelings for Mara hidden successfully for so long… He couldn’t afford to let Vader detect them now. They would make Luke too vulnerable, and expose her to a danger that she didn’t deserve.
You want her, though,
something deep inside of him whispered.
Like you’ve never wanted anything else. You know she’ll never have you – not willingly. But if you ask… If you ask, he would give her to you in an instant. She would be yours forever…
Luke felt dizzy. No, he couldn’t. Not even…
No.
Vader had fallen silent, and was watching him carefully. He knew, damn him. He knew he’d touched something in Luke, even if he couldn’t detect what it was.
“Anything,” Vader said quietly. “Anything, Luke. Tell me what you covet so deeply, and you will have it.” A pause, an opening of his gloved hand toward Luke. “All you have to do is join me, son. Rule with me, together; add your strength to mine. And it will be yours.”
No.
Not his to give. Not mine to take.
The thought was so vehement it almost hurt.
Luke drew a breath, and said, “My lord, you honour me—”
“Father,” Vader said, and Luke halted mid-word to stare at him. Vader put his hand on Luke’s shoulder gently, and said, “I am your father, Luke. Call me Father.”
So blatant. Part of Luke was furious to be manipulated so clumsily; part of him was thrilled, so thrilled. Like a small child.
Call me Father.
Vader knew his weaknesses well, that much was sure.
Luke closed his mouth and blinked. “Father,” he mumbled. And said, “You honour me greatly. But I do not think the time is right to—”
Vader’s hand lifted from Luke’s shoulder, became a fist. “Silence,” the Sith Lord rumbled. Luke eased back, watching that fist warily. Vader turned on his heel, away from Luke, then spun back. He opened his fist, slicing it through the air like a blade. “Enough!”
An invisible hand caught Luke and threw him backward. He wasn’t expecting it; and so his head impacted sharply on the wall behind him. He slid downward.
Vader stalked close, loomed over him. Luke blinked hazily and looked up at the Sith Lord. “Do not mock me with your excuses,” Vader said, each word heavy with anger.
“Father—” Luke said.
“I am the Lord Vader,” the Sith Lord said. “You will address me as such.” Luke fell silent. Vader looked down at him, and for a long time, the only sound in the vast chamber was the mechanised
hiss
of Vader’s ventilator.
“The next time you refuse me,
son
, you will die,” Vader said at last, and turned on his heel with a flick of black cloak. He stalked away.
Luke closed his eyes. He didn’t know how long he sat there: it might have been a long time, or only minutes. But he heard the click of boots on the polished floor, and opened his eyes. Mara stood not far away, looking down at him with contempt in her eyes.
“Vader is a fool,” she said. “Plotting so openly, in a public area.”
Luke looked at her dully for a moment, then turned his face away. He said nothing.
“I should count myself lucky, if I were you,” she added. “Refusing him that way. Anyone else would be a corpse.”
Luke ignored her. He touched the back of his head, looked at his fingertips. They were wet, slimed with sticky crimson blood. He gathered himself and stood, and was almost dropped back onto his knees by a wave of dizziness. He thrust out a hand to steady himself, and his fingers left a trail of red on the mirror-finished wall. He drew a breath; the nausea subsided, and he turned his head. Mara was staring at him.
“What did he do to you?” she demanded, her voice different. Softer and fiercer.
Luke stepped away from the wall, and almost stumbled. She reached to steady him, but he thrust her away. “Don’t… touch me,” he said through his teeth, pushing past.
“Luke…” she said, but he couldn’t face those green eyes. Not now.
Luke strode away.

Oh.
What a horrible situation for Luke to be in. The way Vader manipulated Luke, knew his weakness (of course Luke would want to call him Father - and how cruelly Vader uses that) was just so saddening. I read the last few paragraphs several times. The mental image of Luke's hand covered with blood, the blood smeared on the wall is just so strong. And 'softer and fiercer' - ahhhh, Mara, don't be a fool!
Yoda better have some
right
words of wisdom, unlike Ben, the manipulative little ...
*has high hopes*
*sniffle* You better give Luke a happy ending, darn it!
(And I know you won't answer that.
)

Yeah, a happy ending would be great. But I'm not holding my breath. Mostly because I don't like to hold my breath!
This story is amazing on so many levels. I look forward to each post. You have a keep grasp of all these characters, which makes reading a pleasure.

Wow. For a moment there, almost thought Vader-Dad would force what Luke wanted out of him. THAT would've been awkward.
::shakes head:: Luke good-bad. Empire bad. Mara...pending. Bah.

OH, I really liked that he thought of Mara and realized that, although she would be his in body, he would never have her spirit. I also loved that he knew Vader was manipulating him to his own ends. Loved it!!!

Darth Daddy not being a very good father right now.
Not his to give. Not mine to take.
Good thing her realizes that or very bad things could happen. Although, I'm wondering what Mara would have thought since it sounds like she was eavesdropping.
So stubborn. Why do they have to be so stubborn? Huh?
Next: A certain green troll makes an appearance with some words of wisdom...
But whatever he says better be good. I'm not in the mood for gurnpy old man Yoda.

I love how you prey on Luke's natural dark side!
And him and Mara is very interesting here. She opens to him and he walks away. Argh!

No Anakin hiding there.
What a way to treat your son, Vader.
Luke really needs to get out of there - his life expectancy isn't very great at the moment.
