Poof has a love-hate relationship with the Saga. On the one hand, it’s where he has his shinning moments as a Jedi Knight on the Jedi Council. On the other hand, he dies during the Saga era, and that wasn’t much fun at all.

Chapter 1

So far no one had noticed him. It wasn’t like the average citizen ever looked or bothered to remember his face in the bulletins, but it only took one to notify the Imperials. Emperor Palpatine had placed a bounty on his head, as well as his sister’s and the rest of the Jedi.

He had done his best too keep himself in the shadows since his arrival on Naboo. Taking public transportation had been risky, but long gone where the days of the Jedi and their Starfighters. Once the Jedi had been a force to be reckoned with but now they hid themselves away, too rattled by events of the past.

Palpatine had manipulated a weak and corrupt government, replacing it with his own and declaring himself Emperor. Some thought that this was a good thing, but his rule quickly turned harsh, unyielding, and destructive. Non-humans suffered at his whims, as did anyone who stood in his path.

Palpatine was also a Dark Jedi, a Sith, and he had gained an apprentice to help carry out his domination, the Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker. Skywalker had already defied the Jedi High Council and secretly married a Nabooian Senator, Padme Naberrie Amidala. Anakin easily succumbed to Palpatine’s manipulations.

While Padme was pregnant, Anakin started a quest to purge the galaxy of the Jedi. Many Jedi fell dead as his power in the Dark Side grew. Obi-Wan Kenobi, his former master, was sent to stop him and try to pull him back to the light. They dueled, but their encounter ended in Anakin’s death.

That did not stop Emperor Palpatine. He recruited several younger Jedi to the Sith cause, but they were not nearly as powerful as Anakin Skywalker had been. The battle between the Sith and Jedi raged on for years until the Jedi themselves broke down and scattered. Where once there was thousands of Jedi, now there were a scant hundred.

As the Jedi bowed under the pressures, a new force arose, the Rebel Alliance. Members of the Imperial Senate were secretly leading the defiant group and Padme herself, who had gone into hiding with her twin babies after the death of her husband, was their most visible leader. Over the years their numbers grew into a formable army that the Emperor could no longer ignore. A force that was poised to strike at the very heart of the Dark Lord’s power.

Luke Skywalker was one of these Rebels. He was also a Jedi. The older Jedi might feel content to sit by and debate how best to stop Palpatine, but he would have nothing of that. There was only so long a person could stay on the defensive until he had to become offensive. This wasn’t of the Dark Side, this was the way of things. So too was family.

Luke never knew his father. His mother liked to tell him stories about Anakin as a young man, full of goodness, before the dark times. Luke didn’t need the Force to know that his mother missed his father very much. During their time together, Anakin was always giving Padme a bouquet of flowers that only grew on Naboo. For the past two years, Luke had traveled to Naboo to pick the flowers for his mother’s life-day. The warm look in her eyes was always worth the risk he took traveling away from the safe harbors of the Rebellion.

He made his way down hardly used back alleys to the edge of the city of Theed. There he would find transport out into the countryside where the flowers grew. Passing several deserted industrial buildings he started to get the feeling that he was being watched. For a Jedi, feelings like those could be all too real.

The feeling grew stronger, too strong, so he turned back. A lone figure dressed in the dark cloak of a Sith stood in the middle of the alley.

“Jedi.” The word drifted across the air.

“Hand,” Luke replied as he slowly pulled his lightsaber from its hiding spot under his tunic.

This wasn’t the first time he had run across one of the Emperor’s apprentices, known as the Emperor’s Hands. The hood of his cloak was lowered and Luke couldn’t make out which Hand he was going to face. No matter, he had survived every encounter he had with the Sith, and he planned on surviving this one as well.

The figure ignited a blood red lightsaber and held it firmly in his black-gloved hands. The Sith took a combative stance, lightsaber held vertically, but made no move. It was if he was waiting for Luke to ignite his own lightsaber and prepare for battle.

Normally the Hands were boastful, thinking that they were about to take his life. This one was different, calmer, controlled, deadly. Taking a deep breath Luke switched on the blue lightsaber that had been his father’s and held it across his body in defense.

The Hand approached, his steps subtle, deliberate, as if sizing Luke up. He was slightly shorter them himself, with a small build, arms long and lean. Luke couldn’t think of any of the Hands fitting that description. He remembered Katarn having a lean build last time they fought, but his shoulders were much broader. Maybe this was a new apprentice?

Female? The Force signature was distinctly feminine, but none of the Emperor’s Hands were female.

It was in this moment of distraction the Hand struck, her blade slicing low. Luke easily blocked it but it was only another distraction. The woman’s fist flew at him, pounding against his jaw.

***

“Did you have to use your Jedi-mind trick on the Stormtrooper?” her traveling companion asked.

“Would you rather he took us in for questioning?” Leia responded, a wary eye taking in the cantina.

“I’d rather not get tagged as a Jedi,” he shot back.

Leia grimaced. Palpatine had done his best to make the Jedi look like the bad guys in the eyes of the common people. He blamed them for the fall of the Old Republic and the ills of the galaxy as a whole. More then likely he would blame the Jedi for what was to come if Leia didn’t get back to the Rebellion in time. “Wedge, you and Winter have nothing to worry about. Only me.”

“The authorities might not see it that way.” A wry grin formed on his face. “Come on, let’s get off this dirt-ball.”

This dirt-ball used to be my home. Leia almost said aloud.

After her father, Anakin Skywalker, died, their mother fled with her and her twin brother, Luke. Unable to go back to Naboo, she ended up with the only other family the Skywalker’s had. Anakin’s mother, Shmi, had married a moisture farmer, Cliegg Lars, while Anakin was away training to be a Jedi. Shmi died a few years before Anakin’s demise, but Cliegg was willing to take Padme in. Cliegg’s son from a previous marriage, Owen, wasn’t the warmest of individuals, but his wife, Beru, treated the twins as if they were their own.

Several years passed and Palpatine never came for Padme or the children. It wasn’t till they were about twelve that they realized why. Obi-Wan Kenobi had found them not long after they arrived on Tatooine. He used his abilities to help shield their presence from the Emperor who soon found too many other issues to deal with.

One day while heading to Mos Espa against their Uncle’s wishes that they do not travel alone, Leia and her brother were attacked by Tusken Raiders. The situation looked dire, but a gentle old man rescued them. He told him who he was, a Jedi Master, and that they were also Force Adepts.

They began their training, but it didn’t take long for their mother to figure out what was going on. The twins feared the worst when Padme confronted Obi-Wan, the man who had inadvertently caused Anakin’s downfall and death. She had stared at him for a long moment, the silence deafening.

“Teach them well, and bring them to me when they are ready,” were her words.

“Where are you going?” Leia had instantly asked.

“Too long have I set here, content to let the galaxy fall to the hands of that monster. It’s about time I did something.”

A few days later they said their goodbyes and Padme made her way to the budding Rebel Alliance. Being a former Imperial Senator herself, she was already friends with many of the secret leaders, such as Bail Organa and Mon Mothma.

Several years passed and the Alliance grew. Leia and her brother grew in their skills as they became teenagers. Three years ago, Obi-Wan decided that it was time that they started making their own choices, and took them to see their mother. Leia noticed how different she looked, how regal but yet tough and uncompromising.

“You are Jedi by birth, but you are also living beings,” she had said. “You have a right to choose what you want to do with your life. That responsibility is your own. You may wish to join what remains of the Jedi. You may want to join the Rebels. You might even want to go back and live on Tatooine or join the Empire. Whatever you choose, just know that I will always love you and will always be here for you.”

“Why do we only get to choose one?” Luke asked.

“What do you mean?” Obi-Wan asked before Padme could answer.

“We lived and did our chores on Tatooine while learning to be Jedi. Why can’t we help the Rebels while still learning?”

“That is a good question.” Padme looked to Obi-Wan.

“The council might object," Obi-Wan said thoughtfully.

“They have no say.” Leia retorted. “They can’t force us to go hide with them. We want to help fight Emperor Palpatine.”

“If they want us to be Jedi,” Luke continued, “we’re willing to learn. We’re just not willing to hide.”

A slight grin formed on the Jedi Master’s face and he looked to Padme. “They certainly are Skywalker's.”

So it was agreed. Leia and her brother joined the alliance and Obi-Wan stayed to continue their training. The Jedi High Council, or what was left of it, didn’t take very kindly to the news, but realized how powerless they were to stop the twins. What made matters more interesting, was that several of the younger Jedi and a few of the remaining Masters decided that the Skywalker twins had the right idea. There were scantly three dozen Jedi working in the Alliance, but their presence was felt.

Of course, Leia didn’t expect to be thrust to the forefront of the Alliance just because they were Jedi Padawans and Padme’s children. She was young and untrained in the ways of guerilla warfare. That changed though. Having inherited her mother’s sharp mind and leadership skills, Leia was quickly taken in by the intelligence community among the Alliance.

“You’re turning into quite the little spy.” Leia was told as she accepted her first real mission. Leia really didn’t want to be a spy. She was fascinated by her mother’s work of leading the Rebels, and she wanted to follow in her footsteps. However, everyone had to start somewhere.

Luke on the other hand, he wasn’t ambitious at all. He seemed perfectly content to sit in his X-Wing as a member of Red Squadron. Leia had heard both her mother and Obi-Wan say that Luke was very much like his father. She still wasn’t sure if this was meant as a compliment or as a warning.

Regardless, Leia trusted Luke with her life. She wanted him to be her pilot for this mission, but it wasn’t her decision to make. Wedge was a good man though, and Luke’s best friend. He would have been her second choice anyway. At least she was able to bring the family droids with her.

“Hey!” the barkeep hollered as the three humans and two droids entered the cantina. “We don’t serve their kind here.”

“The droids,” Wedge whispered beside her. Leia nodded for him to go on.

“Threepio,” Leia turned to the gold plated protocol droid. “Why don’t you go wait by the speeder. We don’t want any trouble.”

“I heartily agree with you ma’am.” C-3PO placed a metal hand on the dome of his counterpart, R2-R2. “Come, R2.”

The blue-trimmed astromech whistled and followed 3PO back outside.

Winter gave Leia a look, to which she replied, “I know.”

R2-D2 was carrying the read-outs for the Empire’s greatest weapon, a battle station with the supposed ability to blow up entire planets. Winter had memorized all the data with her perfect memory, but it would be faster to hook up the droid to a terminal and download the information. Time was something they had very little of.

Leia cast her gaze over the cantina, spotting Wedge talking to a Wookie. It wasn’t Wedge’s fault that the Imperials had confiscated their ship at Bothawui. No one had any idea that Winter would have such vital information when Leia was sent to make sure that the other intelligence operative made it back to the Alliance. Rushing to get away, Leia had found a transport heading for Tatooine. Now she just needed a little less traceable transport to Alderaan.

“I like you.” A grubby hand found its way on her shoulder and she was slighty spun around to face an even grubbier looking older male with balding hair and very little teeth.

“I’m happy for you.” Leia said sarcastically as she batted the hand away.

“I don’t think you understand little girl.” This time the man grabbed her arm.

Leia’s fingers twitched for her lightsaber that was hidden in her jacket. This man wasn’t worth letting everyone know that she was a Jedi. Instead she wrenched her arm from his grasp. Grabbing the man by the neck, she pulled him down as she brought her knee up into his gut. As he staggered and started to stand upright again, Leia kicked out with her right leg putting a little bit of the Force behind it.

The man went sailing backwards and landed on a Sabbac table, sliding and flipping over the other end. The players didn’t even look up from their cards.

“Finished?” Wedge asked as he approached.

“Pretty much.”

“Good.” Wedge gestured to the Wookie behind him. “Chewbacca here is first mate on a ship that might suit us.”

Leia nodded and her and Winter followed them to a small booth. They took a seat with Wedge between them. The Wookie roared something and walked off.

“He wants us to wait here while he goes and gets the captain.” Winter translated for Leia since she only had a basic understanding of the language.

“You have our cover stories straight, right?” Leia looked to both of them and they nodded.

A few minutes later the Wookie returned and slid into the booth.

“Han Solo, Captain of the Millennium Falcon.” The man was obviously a Corellian by his speech and mannerisms. Leia guessed he was a good ten years older then her, his life as a smuggler packing on a few more years to his face. He was also wearing striped Imperial Navy trousers, which was interesting. “Chewie here tells me you’re looking for passage to the Alderaan System.”

“Yes.” Wedge was taking the role of leader of the group. “If it’s a fast ship.”

“Fast ship?” Solo almost laughed. “You’ve never heard of the Millennium Falcon?”

“Should I have?” Wedge responded dryly.

“It’s the ship that made the Kessel run in less then twelve parsecs.”

The three of them stared at the captain blankly. Leia tried to gauge him with the Force. He truly felt honest that his ship was that good, but captains always have an exaggerated opinion of their vessels. Leia also checked to see if he was the dishonest sort that they shouldn’t be dealing with. The Force told her that they could trust him.

“I’ve out run Imperial starships,” Solo boasted. “Not the local bulk-cruisers, mind you. I'm talking about the big Corellian ships now. She fast enough for you, kid?”

Wedge nodded.

“What's the cargo?”

“Only passengers. Me, my sister,” Wedge nodded to Leia, then to Winter, “my girlfriend, two droids, and no questions asked.”

Solo’s eyes drifted across all of them, stopping on Leia. “What is it? Some kind of family trouble?”

Leia smiled. “Let’s just say we want to avoid any Imperial entanglements.”

“Well, that's the trick, isn't it?” He winked at her then turned back to Wedge. “And it's going to cost you something extra. Ten thousand in advance.”

“Ten thousand?” Wedge exclaimed. “We could almost buy our own ship with that.”

“But who’s going to fly it, kid? You?”

“Actually…”

Leia sent Wedge a nudge through the Force to get him to shut up. They had a cover story to maintain. “We haven't that much with us. But we could pay you two thousand now, plus fifteen when we reach Alderaan.”

“Seventeen, huh?” Solo worked his lower jaw in thought. “Okay. You guys got yourself a ship. We'll leave as soon as you're ready. Docking bay Ninety-four.”

“Ninety-four.” Leia nodded back.

***

// Going somewhere, Solo? //

Solo looked down at the blaster annoyingly pointed at him. “Yes, Greedo. As a matter of fact, I was just going to see your boss. Tell Jabba that I've got his money.”

The Rodian gestured for him to sit back down and Solo complied. // It's too late. You should have paid him when you had the chance. Jabba's put a price on your head, so large that every bounty hunter in the galaxy will be looking for you. I'm lucky I found you first. //

“Yeah, but this time I got the money.” Han tried to reason.

// If you give it to me, I might forget I found you. //

Han almost laughed at the tired old cliché. Like Han Solo would fall for that line. “I don’t have it with me. Tell Jabba—”

// Jabba's through with you. He has no time for smugglers who drop their shipments at the first sign of an Imperial cruiser.//

“Even I get boarded sometimes.” Han defended himself. He was good at what he did but sometimes the luck was against you. “I didn’t have a choice.”

// Tell Jabba. Maybe he will only take your ship. //

“Over my dead body.” Han slowly pulled his blaster out of its holster. He was through being threaten, especially threatened with having his ship taken from him. Pulling the trigger of his heavy blaster the Rodian was instantly dead.

Han stood and flicked a credit at the barkeep.

I like it already. I like the twins knowing the truth about their father in some way even if it appears there isn't a Vader in this timeline. Of course, you could be trying to fool us, but time will tell. I like the way you've positioned everyone so far. It all seems rather fitting with the familiar characters but in keeping with their new positions. I can't wait to see where you end up going with this.

Fabulous!

I'm always happy when Padme survives!

Add me to that list.

I like the mix of AU with just enough Canon thrown in.

Would that have been young Mara? The hand that caught Luke? And did Anakin really die? Somehow I doubt it...am very curious to se if he makes an appearence.

Wonderful!!! You work the original in so well.

Thanks! I know you really wanted me to write this one. I did change a few things though so there will be a few surprises for you! grin

And you have Wedge.

Oh, yes, can't live without Wedge... and where there's Wedge... mischief

Curious to know how, exactly, the beginning ties back into the storyline.

Don't worry, that will be answered soon enough.. unlike the "datacard"... devil

This is a great AU story. I like the Vaderless timeline, and how things still mirror the original timeline. So I guess they couldn't salvage Anakin's body after the fight with Obi-Wan.

You can kinda thank Shelley for that one. I was sitting debating with myself how Leia's character would be and then I remembered some discussions I had with the notorious Mara-Basher. So that sinched it. Leia's going to be a bad-@$$!
