Title:
Remorse
Genre:
Vignette
Characters:
Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker
Summary:
On a difficult mission, a young Anakin Skywalker learns a painful lesson.
Remorse
As the ship steadily made its way back to Coruscant, Obi-Wan rose from the pilot's chair to check on his young Padawan. This journey hadn't marked Anakin's first assignment with his Master away from the Temple, but it had proven to be a most trying mission for the boy for an entirely different reason. As he walked down the ship's corridor, Obi-Wan hoped that his Padawan was now sleeping, but he sincerely doubted it would be the case.
It never was under such circumstances.
Obi-Wan reached the cramped sleeping quarters and winced at the loud, intrusive hiss the door seemed to make as it opened before him. The room was bathed in darkness, but Obi-Wan could still discern the vague outline of Anakin's still form lying atop the blankets on his bunk, his lanky limbs now much longer than those of the little boy first handed over to the Jedi Master's protective care.
Assuming the boy probably wanted to be alone, Obi-Wan turned to leave.
"Does it ever get any easier?" Anakin's voice called to him softly, causing Obi-Wan to pause in the open doorway.
Slowly, the Jedi Master turned around. His eyes had now grown accustomed to the darkness of the room and, coupled with the faint light emanating from the corridor, he was able to see that Anakin's eyes were open, and he was staring blankly at the bulkhead above him.
Obi-Wan understood.
It was one matter to sit behind the controls of a starfighter and fire upon a faceless enemy, something the boy had experienced at a surprisingly young age. Unfortunately, it was quite another to stare a being in the eyes, watching the life energy leave him as he falls victim to the thrust of your blade and to know that a creature of the Force has died at your own hands.
Today, Anakin Skywalker had been forced to face that harsh reality for the first time.
The Jedi Master walked over to his own bunk, sighing deeply as he sank down upon it. He remembered having this same conversation with his own Master in his youth, but somehow, neither that experience, nor his own history of service to the Order, made this moment any easier.
"No, Anakin. I am afraid it does not," he answered honestly. "I would like to be able to tell you differently, but no matter how old a Jedi grows, it never becomes easier to end the life of another being. As believers in the Force, our natural instincts are to protect all those who are a part of that living energy."
Obi-Wan paused as he watched Anakin blink rapidly. The boy quickly swiped an arm across his eyes and turned away from his Master to face the bulkhead wall, embarrassed and afraid that the older man might perceive his emotions as weakness. Obi-Wan longed to reach out and place a reassuring hand on the boy's shoulder but decided that it would only serve to further embarrass Anakin and thus chose to pretend he hadn't noticed.
"Unfortunately, as guardians of peace and justice, our duty quite often requires us to do that which we find most difficult. We always strive for peaceful resolutions to conflict, Anakin, but when that hope is no longer possible, we can only remind ourselves that our actions are necessary to protect the lives and freedom of others."
Anakin shifted slightly in his bunk, and Obi-Wan heard him release a shaky breath. He reached out through their bond and could sense a small measure of the boy's unease leaving him. He could also sense Anakin's weariness and fatigue.
"It would be best if you tried to get some sleep, my young Padawan," he said quietly as he stood up to leave. He paused as he reached the doorway, however, and turned to the boy's quiet form once again.
"Remember, Anakin," he said gravely, "it is that very remorse that separates us from those beings whose lives we are forced to end. The day we no longer experience even the slightest measure of sadness at that void created in the Force when a life is extinguished, the day we no longer...feel...that is the day we become that which we most fear." Obi-Wan's voice softened as he remembered Qui-Gon's own words to him those many years ago. "And it is in that moment that we cease to be Jedi."
The door hissed shut as Obi-Wan returned to the corridor, leaving Anakin Skywalker alone with this harsh lesson. It was an unspoken rite of passage between a Master and Padawan that all were forced to endure.
But it was a most unwelcome one.

Oh that was great! True too
And sadly enough does Anakin eventually get to that stage? Not to feel remorse any longer? Guess we'll find out for sure in Ep III
for in ANH it sure appears as such. Though in ESB we kind'a see a lil bit of a change.
Ahhh the power of love!!
Awesome vig!!

That was sad and yet so true. And beautiful as well. Really a wonderful piece. Having to kill something at such a young age- and that copuled with the knowledge of what he later becomes... It's tragic, really.
But again, a beautiful piece.

So sad that Obi-Wan wanted to reach out and touch Anakin's shoulder, but stopped himself. That was probably what he needed more than anything. And sad because of what he does become.
Well done.

Lovely,
Gina
! It was very sad and you have to wonder if Obi-Wan should have put his hand on Anakin's shoulder. Very difficult call, I think.
As always, very well done.

I know. I don't know about you, but I will probably be bawling through a good portion of Ep. III.
I, too, think he has reached that point in ANH, or at least had convinced himself that he has. There had to be some speck of that remorse and love left in him in order for his redemption to eventually be possible, though.
Thanks for reading and for your review,

I agree, but I think Obi-Wan just honestly didn't know whether it would help or make matters worse. Anakin, like most young men, didn't want to be perceived as "weak," (not that crying makes a man weak, but unfortunately, some males see it that way, LOL) so he turned away to hide his emotion. Obi-Wan wanted to respect that. On the other hand, Anakin isn't like the other Padawans. He grew up with a mother and was more than likely accustomed to a hug or a comforting hand on his shoulder in hard times.

It was a difficult call, and his decision wasn't out of disinterest or callousness. I think he just wasn't sure what to do, and he didn't want to make matters worse for Anakin.
As always, very well done.

Beautifully written, Gina. I think that you captured their relationship very well - how Obi-Wan is always so awkward around his Padawan, and how Anakin always seems to need something from Obi that he can't figure out or can't give.
I also like the foreshadowing. In my opinion, always a nice touch.

That was so sad, Gina, but wonderful.
To think that Anakin does actually get to that point at which he no longer feels remorse at the ending of a life--that's hard to imagine from the boy we saw in TPM.
Great writing.

RE: Remorse (Vignette; Obi-Wan, Anakin)
Well written fic, touching on so many things - the characters of Anakin and Obi-Wan in particular but also in a general sense, the nature of the relationship between Master and Padawan and how the Jedi perceive themselves and are perceived.
The boy quickly swiped an arm across his eyes and turned away from his Master to face the bulkhead wall, embarrassed and afraid that the older man might perceive his emotions as weakness.
How sad that mourning over a dead person can ever be perceived as weak. How sad that the innocent boy who is so moved by his actions in this story will one day perform them indifferently.

I loved the "Does it get easier" line. You have to wonder if it did get easier (when Anakin became Vader), or if it was still difficult...
Anyhow, lovely viggie,
