	A belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!, Emmi! -----signature----- It was on her fifteenth day in the darkness of the Nirauan cave when Mara Jade awoke to discover a rescuer had finally arrived. It was not, however, any of the potential rescuers she would have expected. It was Luke. ~~And the rest is history~~

	Story Three--Small Wonder "There, there, little one. Hold the banthas; here comes your daddy." Luke chuckled as he saw his uncle trying to keep a grip on the slippery little girl. She flailed and bucked in Owen's arms, straining in Luke's direction as hard as she could. "Daddy!" Katalyn finally wriggled free, slipping down out of Owen's arms. Luke knelt down to scoop her up, laughing as he recieved her sloppy kiss. "Hello, Princess! How was your day with Auntie and Uncle?" "It was great, Daddy! I won all the games at the festival, and I even got this pretty necklace!" She pointed proudly to a shell necklace that was much too long for someone her size. "See?" "You won, huh?" "Yup," she leaned in and very loudly whispered. "Because I'm magical!" Luke's eyes widened for a moment and he glanced nervously at his uncle, but Owen hadn't seemed to notice anything. With a grin, Luke ruffled her hair. "That you are, Princess." At four seasons old, Katalyn Skywalker was the pride and joy of the Anchorhead farming community. She captivated everyone with her bright, round green eyes and infectious laugh, from the oldest grandmother to the tiniest younster. Uncle Biggs brought her sweets and toys, and the twins Hana and Nora Whitesun had provided her with a brightly colored wardrobe. One little boy in particular--Rama Sandburrow, Fixer and Camie's oldest child--was quite taken with the toddler and liked to tug at her blonde waves when she wasn't looking. No one, however, was more in love with Katalyn Skywalker than her father. Mara often said that he spoiled her. It was probably true, he mused as she snuggled her head into his shoulder. The fact that she existed at all was still a wonder to Luke. How was it possible that this tiny being--part Luke, and part Mara--was even in his life? He'd asked Mara that, once. She'd only grinned at him and said "Gee, Skywalker, I'd have thought you'd figured it out by now. You knew the basics pretty well last night." Practical as always, his love. But he still wondered. Did he really deserve this? Sometimes, he didn't think so. He wondered if he was doing the right thing by his daughter. What did he really know about being a parent, having never known his own? Was he deficient, in some way because of that? Sure, Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru had been wonderful, supportive guardians, and he loved them dearly, but Luke felt sure that there was something different--a kinship, a connection felt between parent and child that he had missed out on. There was a tiny, budding ache in his mind, a worry that he might not be good enough for this little blessing he held. "Rama pulled my hair again," said Katalyn, breaking his thoughts. "So I punched him." "Katalyn!" It was Uncle Owen's staccato chuckle that broke Luke's frown; the sound was so rarely heard that it caused the young man to stare at him in shock. "Twasn't any harm in it, Luke. The little rascal was giving her an awful time. It was a beauty of a hook, let me tell you." It was official. Katalyn had achieved the impossible; something even he, Luke, of the pitiful eyes and pouty lip, had never managed to do. He frowned again. "Who are you and what have you done with my Uncle Owen?" The older man only smiled and patted his great-neice on the head. "I've got to be heading home. Your aunt wasn't feeling well this afternoon, and I need to check on her." As he passed, Luke could have sworn he heard "Revenge is sweet." Katalyn was looking up at him, her bright eyes unsure. "We're still going to talk about this when we get home. Mommy and I told you not to hit." Still, he patted her back and hugged her close, sighing when the tiny girl began to sniffle. Parenting was great, but he sure hated this part. It was so hard to decide when to take action, and when to let be. How to discipline? Would they stifle her with too much, or spoil her with too little? Luke wanted more than anything for his daughter to be an honorable woman, like her mother. Perhaps...perhaps even a Jedi. And that brought with it an entirely new set of questions that he didn't even want to think about. They passed a few booths on their way to the Darklighter market complex, where Mara was meeting them for dinner. Hana and Nora called out from behind theirs. "There's my little Kat-Kat!" "Come see us sometime, little one, and we'll have a present for you!" Katalyn perked up and waved merrily at her two favorite aunts, but once they were out of sight she buried her head in Luke's neck again. He rubbed her back absentmindedly, pressing a kiss to her forehead. Mara was waiting for them at their favorite dinner spot. "Trouble?" Luke let her down to climb into a seat at their table. "Rama pulled her hair." "And what did you do, little one?" Katalyn sat up, twirling her hands in her hair, as if remembering the offense. "He made me mad." "And?" "I hit him on the arm." They both knelt before her, joining hands with Katalyn and one another. "Never, ever do things when you're angry, Kat. Have we said that to you before?" Katalyn nodded, tears pooling in her eyes rapidly. "Am I in trouble?" Mara smiled sadly. "Fraid so, kiddo. You have got to learn to manage that temper. You can't hurt people when you get mad. Understood?" The tiny chin trembled, and Luke's heart nearly broke at the brave little nod. Don't cave on me now, Skywalker. This is for her own good, because we love her. She's got to learn. It's just... I know. It kills me too. "I'll tell you what," he said suddenly. "We'll wait until we get home tonight to talk about your punishment, okay?" "Are you gonna spank me?" You caved, Skywalker. Not true. I procrastinated so I wouldn't cave. "That's for me and Daddy to decide, sweetheart. We'll have a talk later. Right now, though, let's just eat, okay?" It was all Luke could do not to cover her in hugs and kisses when she sniffled and said. "Okay, Mommy." After dinner, Mara had to talk Luke out of buying a dessert and convinced him to finally head towards home. Katalyn curled up in his arms immediately, her brow knitted in what he assumed was dread. "Daddy," she said quietly as he carried her towards the speeder. "Do you still love me?" Did he...did he still love her? Luke looked down at his daughter in shock. Of all the things to ask..."I'll always love you, baby. More than anything." "Even though I was a bad girl?" "Even though anything, Kat. You'll always be Daddy's girl." She looked over at Mara. "And Mommy's too?" "Mommy's too. Promise." Mara took a deep breath, taking her daughter into her arms. "But now it's time to have that talk." Luke sighed as he watched them disappear inside the homestead, taking a minute to look into the sky. Katalyn had been named for the stars that sparkled there, and she would need all the help she could get to shine her brightest. He supposed that this parenting thing would come more naturally to him in time. For now, all he could do was love and protect his little wonder. *** Okay, so I lied. I forgot that you all don't know Katalyn as well as I do, so I had to let you get to know her a bit. 	Wonderful post, Emmi. I can see Luke being a great father, despite his own self-doubts. Every parent has them. The part with Uncle Owen was funny, too.
