Xan is so deliciously evil in this story. I love that even now he's looking forward to the day when he can off Palps and take his place.
The whole Yoda/Anakin dynamic is very interesting. Makes one wonder if canon would have ended differently if Yoda had trained the Chosen One.
But I digress.. Great post. Love the way things are setting up.

“Don’t leave me alone,” Anakin whimpered.
“It’s just Bant,” Obi-Wan said, grinning as he turned to leave.
This is too funny! Anakin can face down a sith lord but is afraid to be left alone with Bant.
“What is this? Isn’t it a bit archaic to send the women into hiding?” Padme asked, giving Anakin a rough shove.
That was priceless and so Padme!
I’m sure she understands that the men just want to protect their families. As for Obi-Wan, he lost his mother and father at a young age. It would tear him apart if he lost his son and wife too.
Another fantastic post!

“Take your pants off, Anakin,” Bant ordered as she gathered the supplies she would need from a nearby storage closet.
“What?!” the young man replied, blushing furiously.
“I can’t work through the material … relax, it’s nothing I haven’t seen before … it’s probably worse on me than on you … human males are really quite ugly.” She offered Obi-Wan a slight wink. “You two go find Siri. I’ll bring this one along when I’m done.”
“Don’t leave me alone,” Anakin whimpered.
Not surprised seeng Xanatos tie up loose end.
Or that the Jedi would grow concerned for their families.
That does worry me that Sidious would like that.

Wow. I really enjoyed how you started off this piece with the much-needed humour in the medical offices, then dropped right back down into the serious bits.
And Xanatos- he is so deliciously evil.
I love how the Sith plots entangle and twist every move that the Jedi make. It makes for a very fascinating read.

My favorite moment was rather light-hearted, though the post certainly didn't end on a light note.
“It’s just Bant,” Obi-Wan said, grinning as he turned to leave. He was stopped short of the door by the physician’s voice again.
“By the way, since I have you here ‘Senator Kenobi’, I need to schedule you for your annual physical. Remember, it’s required of all senators.”
“My office will be in touch this week.”
“That’s what you said three weeks ago,” he heard her mumble as he slipped out the door.

obsessedwithSw
- Yes, we are in AotC timeline. Sidious and Xanatos mainly just don't want anyone to feel safe, and since they need someone to pick on, it might as well be Jedi.
calimora
- I promise to have some more of Anakin and Padme in the next post, just couldn't fit it in this time. And unfortunately for Obi-Wan, Sidious put a little something in the works for him a long time ago.
Valariry_Scot
- Oh, the Sith are quite happy. Everything is going according to plans.
dianethx
- There are little things I just love keeping the same in this universe like Obi-Wan and Bant, and the whole healer thing. I think Siri and Auren probably had thoughts similar to Padme, especially since they are Jedi, but there is the whole kid factor with them.
Jedi_Scribe
- It helps for Yoda that he isn't trying to manage missions and all things political. His sole focus is the Force and the Jedi Order.
smoke20ts
- I feel sort of sorry for Anakin. Right now, he is kind of like the youngest brother that everyone is picking on. And, Sidious is definitely up to no good.
DountCooku
- I am so glad I decided to have Bant around. She is such a fun character.
OBI-LOVE
- It doesn't make people feel secure when leaders are sending families away and such, especially the senators fighting against having an army.
PadawanKitara
- They have.
Itachi-Uchiha
- Xan is definitely looking forward to the day when Sids is out of the picture. He really doesn't like being chained down and obedient to someone, it's not one of his strengths. I am loving working with the Yoda and Anakin dynamic. It makes sense to me that the wisest of the order would train the most powerful. At least this council saw it that way.
Kivas
- The dirt is good and was set up a long time ago.
bek
- Well, a healer is an entirely different layer of fear. I think Bren'an is the only reason that Siri agreed to leave, that and I am sure her father had a few words for her.
Ascal Elessar
- Thanks.
Healer_Leona
- Sidious wouldn't be very pleased if Xanatos left someone around, especially in the custody of Corsucant security, who knew a little too much. Especially since he wasn't really supposed to reveal himself.
LadyLunas
- Xan scares me sometimes, and I'm the one writing him, so I don't know what that says about me. The humor has to be there for me. This would be too serious to write without it.
Jaira
- Yep. Poor Obi.
VaderLVR
- I loved writing the scene in the healers.
Spiritweaver
- It helps for Padme this time that there hasn't been another attempt on her life. I think Anakin would probably pick her up kicking and screaming and haul her off to Dantooine.
LOBO
- Thanks for reading.

RE: For Such a Time as This (Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, others - very AU) - Chapter 66 updated 11/25
Sorry for being so long between posts. Hopefully, now that the holidays are over I can get back on schedule again.
Chapter 67
“Is Senator Shak in? He’s expecting me.”
Olin Kitab flashed his best jovial smile at the young woman seated behind the reception desk. He was too old to be considered dashing but he still had a way with ladies, as evidenced by the shy smile directed back at him.
“The senator is in his office. Go right in.”
“Thank you.”
With a nod of his head, Kitab started down the hall in the direction indicated, not that he need the direction. He had spent quite a bit of time in the offices belonging to the Rayak delegation, Shak a longtime ally.
“Glad you could make it Olin,” the senator murmured, tearing his eyes away from the window as Kitab entered. “It was lovely to see Mena again last night. We haven’t had enough social calls as of late, always strictly business.”
Bao Shak was tall and excessively thin like most members of his species. Kitab often wondered what kept them from blowing away with a good stiff breeze. Extending one long six-fingered hand, the blue-skinned senator offered his guest a seat. Kitab sunk down into the chair, briefly wondering as always if the furniture, special-made for a Rayakan, would hold a man of his size.
“Mena enjoyed catching up with Jae as well. You’re right, it had been a while.”
“Can I offer you a drink?”
“Depends,” Kitab said, cheekbones lifting in one of his trademark grins. “Is it that awful, sour swill your species is so fond of?”
“No, old friend. Only the good stuff for you – Alderaani brandy.”
“Then the more the better,” Kitab beamed. Instinct told him he was close to achieving his goal. It only remained to be seen how much it would cost him.
“I’ve thought about your request,” Shak murmured as the two men stared at each other across the desk.
“And?”
“Olin, the truth is I’ve had countless calls every day – everyone wanting to be on this oversight committee for the Trade Federation – everyone has a stake in it, everyone has their reasons. We go way back. It would be easy for it to look like favoritism.”
“That’s why I am not asking to be on it. I know that’s too much,” Kitab answered. He had expected this argument. “You need Senator Kenobi on this committee.”
“He’s young.”
“And you will find that he probably has wisdom and instinct double that of any of your other members,” Kitab protested sharply.
“You have tremendous faith in him,” Shak sighed. He had pushed back from his desk and wrapped one gangly leg over the other. “How bad do you want this, Olin?”
It was a loaded question. Shak might be a friend, but he was first and foremost a politician. He already had a price in mind, and it sounded steep. “What’s your price?” Kitab countered.
“There are many I know who believe that if the Trade Federation is going to be granted a droid army, the Republic also needs to see to protecting itself,” Shak murmured.
“We do,” Kitab pointed out. “Individual systems are free to have their own militias.”
Shak let out a weary chuckle. “Olin, the Yopurgan system is wealthy among its fellow Mid Rim planets and can afford a well-equipped militia. Many of us are not so fortunate, and it is even worse for most of the Outer Rim worlds. If attacked, we have little hope of defending ourselves.”
“What do you and these others you know propose?” Kitab prodded.
“An army of the Republic,” Shak said, delivering his fellow senator a pointed stare with deep, smoke-colored eyes. “Equal protection for all worlds.”
“It can certainly be placed to a vote. I can help you spearhead …”
“Voting is complicated, Olin,” Shak said, suddenly exasperated and desperate to make his point. “There is no immediate threat now. It could take years to raise a quality army. By the time the senate -- especially the Core Worlds -- sees a need, it could be too late. We desperately need you onboard, Olin.”
Kitab could only shake his head. “Why me?”
“You are high ranking on the appropriations committee … funds siphoned off from multiple accounts a little at a time won’t be missed or investigated, and that will be enough to pay for …”
“I cannot believe I am hearing this!” Kitab spat out in shock. “Bao, are you really suggesting that a few senators go ahead and make this choice for thousands of other representatives? That we embezzle funds?”
“Do you want Kenobi on the committee or not?”
“I think I should go,” Kitab said. His jovial expression was gone, his face now set into hard lines. “You aren’t yourself, my friend.”
Without saying anything else, Kitab stood up and rushed out of the room.
Shak sat alone for a moment, directing his gaze back out the window. It wasn’t long before another figure, Senator Palpatine of Naboo, entered the room and sat down near him. Shak glanced at his new guest and shook his head. “Without Olin or someone else on appropriations, we don’t have a chance,” he said dejectedly.
“He’s a stubborn and proud man. I didn’t expect him to yield immediately,” Palpatine said calmly. “I mad sure to schedule a meeting with him for later this morning. Perhaps all he needs is a little more … persuasion.”
“I hope you’re right.”
“Relax, my friend,” Palpatine crooned softly. Shak found the voice mesmerizing; a warm calm infused his mind, assuring him that all was well. “You are a man of vision. You serve the Republic well.”
“I serve the Republic well,” Shak murmured in agreement. It was true.
Palpatine sat behind his desk, lips pursed together and fingers steepled as he contemplated his next step. So much careful and patient planning had gone into this moment; events had been set in motion years ago were coming to fruition. He could hardly believe the moment was at hand. Acutus was on Geonosis doing his part; soon, the entire galaxy would be changed forever.
He sensed Kenobi arrive. Yes, the young Jedi’s power was near perfectly shielded in the Force, except that the darkness fled from him with each step he took. Palpatine waited. Soon, Kenobi was in his doorway.
“Ah, Senator Kenobi, please come in,” Palpatine said, standing as he waved the young man in. “I am sorry to ask for such an early meeting, but my schedule is full today.”
“I understand, Chancellor,” Kenobi said, bowing respectfully before both men took their seats.
“I was glad to hear that your wife and son are well. It is a pity that we live in times when our senators have to send their families away. I never thought I would see the day,” the older man said wistfully. “It must be hard for you.”
“Home seems a little empty right now,” the young man said.
“I am sure it is.” Palpatine offered a sad smile. “Hopefully this entire mess will be over soon, and you can bring your family home.”
“What was it you asked to see me about?”
“As yes, business.” Palpatine turned to his data terminal and removed a small datachip. “I need your help.”
“Of course.”
“Auditors. Why they choose a time like this to start picking away at things? Anyhow, they have come across some bookkeeping discrepancies from appropriations.”
The young man shot him a questioning glance and a shy smile. “Sir, I have never been on the appropriations committee …”
“Yes, but Senator Kitab was. These discrepancies are older. The auditors are in a panicked frenzy because it looks as though someone diverted a considerable amount of funding, and there is no record as to where it went.”
“Senator Kitab would never …” Kenobi began defensively.
“I am sure it is all a big misunderstanding … a simple bookkeeping error,” Palpatine soothed. “I was wondering if you might have any of Senator Kitab’s old files. It would be considerably helpful.”
Anyone who had known Olin Kitab, and Palpatine had, knew that he was meticulous in his record keeping. Even if the actions had been quasi-illegal, detailed records probably existed of it. Palpatine was counting on it.”
“I’m sure it is in our archives. I can look the files up.”
“Thank you. You’re help is much appreciated.”
As Kenobi left, Palpatine allowed himself a satisfied smile. If only he could be there when the young senator found out that his current crusade in the senate was futile, thanks to his late mentor. The military creation act was meaningless because an army already existed for the Republic, and the only two who could say anything in their defense had both been dead for a long time. The ensuing scandal was going to be glorious.
***
The air on the barren planet was as dry as the dust beneath his feet, Dooku lamented as he stood waiting. He would much rather be back at his home on Serreno. Still, Geonosis was a perfect base of operations, of little interest in the Outer Rim.
A ship settled into the hangar in front of him. Dooku waited for the landing ramp to lower before settling to one knee. He knew better than to speak even when Acutus came to a stop in front of him and just stood there. At times, Dooku, a man of pride, found it hard to give the respect demanded of him. Still, he continued to learn rapidly, soaking up any teachings of the Darkside that Xanatos offered. His master seemed to take great delight in reminding him of his place, so Dooku had learned not to cross him unless he was willing to pay the price.
Seconds stretched on to minutes, and still there was silence. It was a test.
“Good, I think you're finally learning,” the Sith finally said with the usual coolness in his voice. “Now, get up of the ground.”
“You’re presence is unexpected, Lord Acutus,” Dooku said as he got to his feet and fell into step behind the Sith.
“I have come to make sure you are on schedule,” Acutus replied.
“I have sent regular progress reports to Lord Sidious, as was asked of me …”
The Sith stopped abruptly and whirled around. Anger briefly flashed in blue, barely-human eyes before a slow smirk crept across Acutus’ face. “Please try to remember, Dooku. My master trusts me – not you.”

Yeah, update, but no matter the universe - canon, AU, whatever - that Palpatine is shrewd, manipulative and cunning.

Palpatine, gotta love the manipulative monster. He is truly a great man at getting what he wants. Loved it!
As Kenobi left, Palpatine allowed himself a satisfied smile. If only he could be there when the young senator found out that his current crusade in the senate was futile, thanks to his late mentor.
