	Animus of Odium Title: Animus of Odium Author: CherryLightsaber Timeframe: Two years after TPM; one year after "Phasmatis of Cruor" Characters: Obi-Wan, Anakin, etc. Genre: Horror/Drama Keywords: spirits, possession Summary: One year after "Phasmatis of Cruor", Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker are sent to the Outer Rim planet of Nardyrs to negotiate an end to a civil war. There, something within Obi-Wan's soul begins to resurface… and he never knew it was there in the first place. GL owns Star Wars. I am not GL. At last… not really, the sequel of "Phasmatis of Cruor". While the last title translated into something like "Spirit of Blood," this title translates into something like "Soul of Hatred." An short introduction: after the enormous amount of replies I received in "Phasmatis of Cruor,", well, enormous in my book, and at some point while writing "PoC", I decided to go ahead with a sequel. One thing I didn't like about "PoC" that it just wasn't creepy and the like enough. Hopefully, that would change with this one. With all that said and done, let us begin the second and final part of the "Vengeance" duology! --- Prologue: The Reawakening "Hatred makes one powerful—yes, that is true, but it has the same properties as those putrid beverages; it is intoxicating. You must use your hatred to fuel you, but an overload of it can end up as your downfall." - The words of Darth Plagueis to his first apprentice, Darth Mortus --- It is said that life and light go hand in hand. From an entirely scientific point of view, yes, it could make sense. Without light, the plants that rely on it for energy wither and die, the animals that eat the plants die of starvation, the animals that eat those animals also die, and so on and so on. But from a deeper point of view, from one who has embraced the teachings of the Force, light is but one half of the equation of life. Darkness is just as significant as the light. To not have darkness would make a sentient less than what he would be with both elements. --- An entanglement of black, frozen in brilliant light, began to stir. Wispy tentacles took on their wavy form. The whole cloud was now fully wake. Today was the day it would begin its revenge. --- Obi-Wan Kenobi opened his eyes to the morning light. It was the most peaceful sleep that he had in months. Darth Maul didn't plague him. Qui-Gon Jinn's death didn't haunt him. Noticing a burning feeling on his right shoulder, Obi-Wan rolled up his sleeve to examine it. It was another of those strange symbols; one had already appeared on his other shoulder the day after Darth Maul's spirit attempted to kill him a year ago. His holocomm beeped. Obi-Wan reached over and pressed the 'receive' button at the devices base. It was Erdaan Kelour, a male Chagrian Jedi Knight and Secretary of the Jedi Council. "Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi. You and your Padawan must report to the Council chamber in one hour." Obi-Wan nodded. "We'll be there." Remember how the quotes had significance in the story in "Phasmatis of Cruor"? Well, this time, they also have significance in a different way. And I'm assuming you would like PM updates? --- Part One: Shining Brilliance The demon with a will so bright Shall recite the ancient words, And the vessel that carries such darkness Shall bring chaos to the masses. - A prophetic poem by Darth Verwarr during his apprenticeship to Darth Legior --- "The civil war on the jungle planet Nardyrs is escalating to a point that it will threaten the existence of the Nizer jungle, where a valuable and rare substance known as neridium is frequently mined," Jedi Master Mace Windu explained. "Should these neridium deposits be destroyed, an important component of shield generators will be gone forever. We want you, Knight Kenobi, Padawan Skywalker, Master Vuzeir, and Padawan Shintaru, to go to Nardyrs and negotiate with each faction involved in the civil war, one Master and Padawan per faction." "Caution, you must take," Master Yoda added. "Any atmospheric travel, they prohibit. Through the jungle, you must go." Mace glanced at the older Jedi Master. "Don't take any chances. Relations between the Republic and the Nardyrans are already very strained. If any of the Nardyrans are injured or offended due to your actions, accidental or not, you must leave immediately. You have one hour to get ready, then you will proceed to Hangar Four. May the Force be with you." The four bowed and left. --- "Master, do we really have to work with that stuck-up Sullustan?" Anakin complained as he and Obi-Wan left the Council chamber. "He thinks he's so… perfect." "I agree, but Legan Shintaru has proved to be a great help during an encounter with foreign wildlife. You will just have to learn how to deal with him, Anakin," Obi-Wan advised. Anakin sighed. "I guess." --- Darth Sidious's holographic image appeared on the holodais, the black, face-obscuring robes combined with the blueness of the hologram making him a menacing figure. But Count Dooku, now Darth Tyranus and Sidious's latest apprentice, was all too used to it… on the outside, at least. "I have received word that the Jedi Council have sent two Jedi and their apprentices to resolve the situation at Nardyrs. "May I ask what their names are, my lord? Perhaps with a little recognition, I might have an easier time… handling them." Sidious paused. "Very well. They are Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker, as well as Greimus Vuzeir, and Legan Shintaru. I want you to prepare for their arrival." Yes, he recognized all but Shintaru. "But, my lord, Coruscant is such a far away planet from Nardyrs. Surely I can wait until they are a little… closer to the system?" Dooku asked. Sidious glowered at Dooku's question. Not a good sign. "At this time, I wish Darth Maul was still alive. He would have willingly followed my orders, regardless of how 'impractical' it might have seemed. I expect the same obedience from you, Lord Tyranus." Dooku bowed his head in apology. "Please excuse me, my master. I was only asking because—" "You can save your reasons for later, Lord Tyranus," Sidious hissed before resuming his familiar expression. "My task for you is simple: set a land mine at these exact coordinates, no further north, south, east, or west." A holomap appeared on the viewscreen at the holodais's base. "But whatever you do, you are not to harm both Kenobi and Skywalker." Dooku nodded as he observed the map. "It will be done, my lord." --- A Consular-class Space Cruiser, painted in the diplomatic red, lifted off a landing platform extending from one of the Jedi Temple's four towers. It flew into the high atmosphere, out of Coruscant's orbit, and into hyperspace. --- I loved writing the Sidious scene, for obvious reasons. -----signature----- Blarghity blargh. You'll just have to wait and see. --- Part Two: Fading Light "You are a failure, Lord Massacus. I should have let the Jedi take you, so you could join one of their incompetent ranks. But instead, I took you and trained you, and you and I have shamed the Sith." - The words of Darth Carnas to his first apprentice, Darth Massacus --- "Interesting," the Sullustan Padawan Legan Shintaru muttered as he studied the data on a common Nardyran plant. Anakin looked up from his holobook. "What's interesting?" "The Nardyran halunusc, a common plant found mostly in the jungles of Nardyrs, carries a pollen that is released when it is disturbed by even the faintest of physical contact. This pollen is a hallucinogen with effects that activate five minutes after it is inhaled. Luckily, it can't grow within 10 feet of falgus trees because of the trees's weedlike nature and fortunately for us, a whole falgus tree grove stretches through the Nizer jungle, with each end right in front of the headquarters of each faction." Anakin nodded, uninterested by Legan's explanation. His thoughts were more on "when will we get there. It had been hours since they had entered hyperspace; surely they were near Nardyrs. What's to look forward to, anyway? A botanics lesson with 'Master' Shintaru and a debate over some skirmish? He rested his head on the chair, half-noticing his master walking through the hallway outside of the room. --- Obi-Wan walked into the fresher, turning on the sink to wash his face. A large headache had pounded him for nearly an hour now. He felt a familiar stinging on his left arm. With his sleeves already rolled up, he needed only to look down at it. Another mark, similar to the ones that had appeared on his shoulder, only thinner and longer out so that it would stretch over his whole arm and end at the wrist. The appearances of these burn marks were beginning to worry him. "By the fourth a bell shall ring…" he muttered dully. What did I just say? --- Dust and leaves were scattered as the transport landed on the surface of Nardyrs. The boarding ramp descended, and three Jedi stepped hastily off. "Are you coming, Obi-Wan?" Greimus Vuzeir, a male human, asked, turning his head. "I'll catch up with you. Just go on ahead," Obi-Wan replied. The Jedi Master nodded and walked off. --- Obi-Wan clutched his forehead as he walked into the cruiser's engine room. The headache was becoming worse. The pain he felt was becoming unbearable and beyond that point, until he slumped into unconsciousness. --- "By the fourth a bell shall ring…" Whatever could that mean? 	JOINME: Thanks! Sidious is going to play a very minor role in this one. Yes, it hurts me, too. And the burn marks are far from complete. There are only three as of now. stormqueen: Don't worry, I'm updating now. And the marks... well... revealing their purpose will ruin the story. Here's Chapter Three! --- Part Three: Splotches of Black "At first, I heard one bell. Then, I heard five bells. Then, I heard thirty. Then, one million." - An except from the private journals of Darth Devast, Master of Darth Legior --- A explosion rocked the vicinity of the landing spot. The trees shook, some smaller plants were blown away, some animals scurried to a safer place. "That came from the landing spot," Anakin said, looking at a black cloud that now drifted in the air. "And Master's there. Come on!" The three Jedi rushed through lines of falgus trees to where their transport had landed. In the red cruiser's place was a heap of charred black durasteel and a Jedi laying on the ground nearby. "Master!" Anakin ran over to Obi-Wan's unconscious form and rolled him on his back. The Jedi Knight almost instantly, but slowly, opened his eyes. "Anakin?" Obi-Wan looked over at the ship's wreckage. "What happened?" Legan walked to where the ship's engines where. "The engines sustained the most damage, so it’s a safe bet that they exploded. I think that either a timed bomb was planted on the engines or the engines themselves were sabotaged prior to our flight or after we landed." Strange, Obi-Wan thought, standing up and dusting his robes off. Last I remember, I was in the engine room. But, I passed out before the explosion, so I couldn't have done it. "Whoever it was," Greimus concluded, crossing his pale-skinned arms, "this person—or people, want us dead. Let's keep moving; the Tagani village is nearby." The other three Jedi nodded in agreement. --- Continuing on the falgus tree path, with Obi-Wan and Anakin in front and Griemus and Legan following behind, the 11-year old Padawan couldn't help but try to start a conversation. "Master, where were you when the ship exploded?" "I… was in the fresher. A nasty headache was plagueing me, and when I turned on the sink to wash, I heard a loud noise, then nothing." Anakin stared at his master inquisitively. "I don't think so. Master Qui-Gon couldn't keep anything from me, and I would know when somebody was lying." He looked back on when Qui-Gon suddenly came into his life and freed him from slavery. Obi-Wan faced the ground, looking thoughtful. "Really? Well then, I'll just tell you the truth; I was in the engine room." "The engine room?" Legan blurted out. "That's the most likely place for an engine sabotage. Don't tell me you blew up the ship!" Greimus tugged his Padawan's shoulder. "Now, my young appentice, don't be so quick to accuse." "I'm not, I-" Burning flame and smoke consumed their world. --- More cliffies! Here's Chapter Four! --- Part Four: Enveloping Darkness "One little Jedi jumping on the bed, I picked him up and messed with his head." - A variant of a children's rhyme written by Darth Legior as a young Sith initiate --- He seemed to be walking for hours, looking for… something. Well, he knew he was searching for something. "I've been waiting for you, Obi-Wan. We meet again, at last." A familiar voice said. A figure walked out from the distance, becoming more recognizable with every step. It was his late master, Qui-Gon Jinn. "Master?" "Master?" Qui-Gon raised an eyebrow as he began to melt into black smoke. The smoke took another shape, familiar, but one that he could loathe. Darth Maul. Enormous black wings erupted from the Sith Lord's back, casting a shadow upon Obi-Wan. The crown of horns on his head merged into two horns and stretched high into the sky. His arms became snapping, eternally waving tentacles of darkness; all of which reached out and snatched Obi-Wan. "I always wanted to do this." Obi-Wan opened his eyes with a gasp. It was only a dream, he told himself as he stood up and took a deep breath, taking the time to dust himself off… for the second time. How long had he been out? "Anakin, are you okay?" "Anakin's not here," Legan's voice said. "He and my master were thrown off on the other side of the grove. It's highly probable that they were captured by the Nardyrans… or worse." Always with the probabilities. Obi-Wan wished that the Sullustan boy was more like Qui-Gon, finding answers in the Living Force, not with facts. "Come, Legan. We have to look for Anakin and Master Greimus." He started for the other side of the paved path in the falgus tree grove. The headache came back, with double the pain that caused him to pass out on the ship. If he had to sacrifice his sword arm to get rid of the pain, he would. "Master Kenobi?" Legan stepped closer to Obi-Wan. "Master Kenobi, are you all right?" He wasn't sure of the answer to that question. He wanted to say yes, but in truth, he wasn't. He wanted to say no, but… he just couldn't. There was the burning, this time on his right arm. Judging from past experience, it was symmetrical to the one on the left. When the burning disappeared, darkness enveloped his vision. --- "Master Kenobi, you look sick. I have a medpack," Legan reached into his bag and pulled out a small black box. "No, I'm fine." A hand grabbed the pack and shoved it back into the bag. "But, Master Kenobi—" "I'm fine." The Jedi Knight whirled around, a dark scowl on his face. He summoned his lightsaber; a blue blade sprung forth. The last thing Legan ever saw was Obi-Wan Kenobi plunging the blade into his forehead as the Jedi Knight whispered "By the fourth a bell shall ring, but by the sixth there shall be five." --- I loved writing this one. -----signature----- Blarghity blargh.
