Lincoln_6_Echo I've had this chapter prepared, and just forgot to post it. At least I think I didn't. It doesn't help that I had this story saved in two different files. So hopefully, this is a new chapter.
corellian-jedi I'm sure they'll be glad to hear that!
Darth_Marrs I'll PM you!
Ascal_Elessar Sithly Obi-Wan is fun to write.
Jturtle I'm so glad you enjoyed this!
Idrelle_Miocovani Interesting indeed!
Master_Noi He's pretty twisted, isn't he?
Gkilkenny I'll see if you still want on the list.
Milteck A lot of those questions are answered in the prequel. But to sum it up, Obi-Wan turned when Anakin was younger. And the Jedi Order knows something is up, but not what.
Jaira Guilt got me working on this one again.
FVZA-Colonel All very good points.
Tyranus230 I've got bits and pieces of it written, but right now it jumps around so I have to go in and fill in the blanks.
jedipati Thank you! Not dead yet. I've given it mouth-to-mouth.
sherazade I'm working on it. Promise.
ClaudiaR I'll see if you still want to read this.
Quigonjecca I love Sithly Obi! He's fun to write! And here's a post!
Darth_Drachonus It's alive!
Darth_Marrs I'd never want to make Darth Marrs sad.
Lincoln_6_Echo Okay, here we go!
Chapter 3: A Lesson Learned
Anakin bit his lip as he concentrated on anticipating where the remote’s next bolt would hit. Stretching out with his senses as Obi-Wan had taught him, he could “see” its path and smoothly swept his blade into position. Almost before the movement was completed, the bolt rushed toward him. He felt a moment of satisfaction as his blade neatly absorbed the energy.
With a graceful twist of his body, he evaded the next bolt, which came just a heartbeat later. He looked up to see his Master watching him carefully. There was no visible satisfaction or dissatisfaction on his face. There never was; Obi-Wan rarely betrayed any emotion during a training session.
His eyes never leaving Obi-Wan’s, Anakin bent his right leg and let his left leg slide straight out to the side, lowering his body in one swift move. He felt the hair on his head tingle as energy passed just above him. He did not need to watch the remote; as his Master so often told him, his eyes could deceive him. Anakin trusted in the Force.
He was hardly aware of the sweat trickling down his back or the slight trembling of his exhausted muscles. Noting the suggestion of crinkles appearing by his Master’s eyes, he knew the training session was over.
However, he did not relax yet. Anakin stayed in position and ready to take action until Obi-Wan switched off the remote. His Master was patient, but he did not tolerate laziness or weakness. Taking anything for granted could get him killed one day, and that was a lesson that Obi-Wan had instilled in him from the early days.
Coming to a standing position and thumbing off the lightsaber, he finally allowed his breathing to become labored. He began to feel the effects of session on his muscles; the demands on his young body had been considerable. It was true that the Force had strengthened him, but now was the time to allow his body to return to its natural state, to feel what he had done. The effects of the intense training session bombarded him for a moment, and then he found his equilibrium.
Obi-Wan’s hand came down on his shoulder.
“Good, very good,” he said with a slight smile. “You are improving, young one.”
“Thank you, Master,” he said as he gulped in another breath. “I have been practicing.”
The man pulled him close and ruffled his hair. “I can see that.” He brought their foreheads together. “You make me very proud, my son.”
Anakin merely smiled.
They turned and left the training salle.
The young boy put his arm around the man’s waist. “Thank you, father.”
Now that the training session was over, they were father and son. The roles of Master and Apprentice had been left behind in the salle.
~~~~~~~~~~
At dinner that night, Obi-Wan and Anakin quietly enjoyed their meal. Music played softly in the background; this evening it was Anakin’s choice. Obi-Wan flinched at a particularly raucous passage that had Anakin’s head bobbing in time to the beat of the music. Really, the music the younger generation listened to could hardly be called “music” in all fairness to some of the more talented musicians of his own time. Still, his son seemed to find great joy in the harsh, grating mixture of sounds.
The boy looked up and noticed the distaste on his father’s face. He grinned and began moving his whole body in rhythm to the music. “Good stuff, huh?” he asked.
Rolling his eyes, Obi-Wan sighed. “At least it isn’t too loud.” That was about the only positive thing he could think to say of his son’s choice.
“You’re turning into an old man,” Anakin warned him.
Obi-Wan grabbed the boy by the shoulder and pulled him forward slowly. “Any grey hairs you see were caused by you,” he replied with a smirk.
Anakin leaned closer and studied the reddish strands carefully. He winced. “Wow, I must have been really bad.”
With lightning fast reflexes, Obi-Wan reached out and pulled Anakin’s hair, prompting a yell from the boy. “Wretch,” he said fondly to his son.
His lips quirking, Anakin returned his attention to his meal. Obi-Wan felt a spike of mischief coming from the boy and had to wonder at its cause for only a moment.
The music suddenly blared loudly and Anakin clutched his belly as he laughed, though Obi-Wan could not hear it over the music.
“Very funny,” he said dryly as he lowered the volume of the music with a twitch of his hand.
“Well, I thought it was,” Anakin replied with a smirk.
“You’re quite the comedian,” the man agreed. “Let’s see if you find doing the dishes just as amusing.”
A groan from the boy elicited a pleased chuckle from the father.
**********************************
The next morning, Obi-Wan conducted a business meeting. At eleven years old, Anakin had just started to attend such meetings. It was interesting and important for him to see how his father attended to the affairs of running such a vast and diverse financial empire.
One day, it would be his and he knew it was a huge responsibility.
Currently, Obi-Wan was frowning as he listened to a Twi’Lek stammering excuses for a lost shipment. Chador came to a stuttering halt when Obi-Wan held up his hand in a languid, yet somehow menacing, gesture. His expression was carefully neutral, giving away nothing.
“So you’re telling me that Republic forces boarded the vessel and confiscated my cargo?” Cool, polite interest was in Obi-Wan’s voice.
Chador winced at the blunt statement but nodded. “Yes, your lordship, that’s basically what happened.”
“That is what happened,” Obi-Wan said coldly. “Was it not your responsibility to distribute the appropriate bribes so that something like this would not happen?” He quirked one brow inquiringly at the terrified being.
Chador shifted uneasily on his feet. “Yes, your lordship.”
Obi-Wan slowly pushed a datapad across his desk and faced it toward Chador. “I’ve seen the figures, Chador, and the bribes were sufficiently outrageous to assure that we would have no undue interference from troublesome government agents.” He glanced at the Twi’Lek. “Am I correct in that conclusion?”
“Yes, your lordship,” Chador replied miserably, his eyes darting left and right as if seeking help.
Obi-Wan stood up from behind the desk and began to pace the large room. He rested his chin on his hand and appeared to consider Chador’s words, rubbing at his beard as he moved. Obi-Wan circled the room once without saying a word. Then he stopped directly in front of the trembling Twi’Lek.
Putting his hands on his hips, he tilted his head to the side, his expression respectfully curious. “So did you fail to bribe the right people or did you fail to distribute the amount listed in your last financial statement?” Anakin was not the only one who detected the silken threat in his father’s words. Several of the guards exchanged glances, already anticipating a lively afternoon.
“N-n-neither, my lord,” Chador said, almost crying now. “I would not dream of stealing from your lordship.”
A cold smile stretched across the Sith Lord’s handsome face. “You might not have dreamed of it, Chador, but you did it all the same.” He sounded disappointed in Chador’s weakness, and someone who did not know him might have thought he intended to do nothing more than scold his wayward employee.
Chador however, got a glimpse of his fate in the cold blue eyes and flung himself to his knees at Obi-Wan’s feet. “Mercy!” was all he could gasp.
Obi-Wan stared at the trembling figure with disgust. “At least have the courage to stand by your actions, Chador.” He shoved the Twi’Lek with his boot. “If you’re brave enough to steal from me you should be brave enough to face me.” He grimaced with disdain. “Stand up! Tell me that you took my credits. Tell me to go to hell if you must, but don’t cower on the floor like a beaten pup, ready to wet yourself in your fear.”
The guards laughed softly, nudging each other as the show began in earnest. A renewed quivering in the now sobbing figure was the only response. With a grimace of distaste, Obi-Wan pulled away and walked back toward his desk where Anakin sat with wide, observant eyes.
“Tell me, my son,” Obi-Wan said. “What is the appropriate punishment for Chador here?”
The boy’s eyes slid to the Twi’Lek still kneeling on the floor and then back to his father. His words sounded odd in his childish, innocent voice.
“Death is the only punishment possible, my lord.” He met his father’s eyes expectantly.
Obi-Wan nodded with a approving smile. “Even a child sees the truth, Chador.”
The Sith Lord did not glance at the Twi’Lek again, simply gestured with one hand and listened to him choking to death slowly. A smile appeared on his face as he saw that his son did not look away. Such incidences were distasteful, but necessary. Even if Chador had not stolen from him, his death would prove to be a powerful example to the others who served him and who might be considering stealing from their Master. Anakin understood this without being told, as he did so many things. It was just one of the many things about his son that was proof that he had made the right decision to make Anakin his heir.
They were bound by much more than blood ties. The Force itself had ordained their bond.
Anakin calmly observed the Twi’Lek’s death throes with a detached air; the boy was neither pleased nor horrified. That detached air pleased Obi-Wan as much as his son’s wisdom. While a Sith did not deny his emotions, neither could he be ruled by them, for feelings could cloud the mind. He was determined to find a happy medium between the detachment of the Jedi Order and the passionate abandon of the old Sith ways. He and Anakin would lead the way and those new ways were nurtured in moments like this one.
Finally, there was silence in the room as the Twi’Lek stopped twitching and fell completely still. Taking a moment to savor the way the Force felt after such a death, Obi-Wan closed his eyes.
Then, opening his eyes once more, Obi-Wan gestured to Anakin, who stood up immediately and never glanced at the corpse again.
“Come, my boy, let us see what other amusements await us this day.”
The Sith Lord took his apprentice –the son who held such promise– by the hand. The two of them walked through the vast corridors of their home, not even noticing the bows of those who served them, and out into the bright sunshine.
Wow! That was pretty brutal... somehow I thought that Sith Obi would be not really Sithly... but this is so different! I'm really enjoying this story. Please keep me on the PM list, and keep writing!
Sith is more than a name. If we're going to have a Sith Obi, he has to BE Sith. And this chapter nailed it. Great job!
Great chapter. It is strange to see Obi-Wan kill in cold blood, but he is a Sith so it is not surprising. However he did not 'enjoy' his victim's death, he did not take pleasure from it (as Sith Qui-Gon did)and this makes him a very interesting Sith. Looking forward to more!!
Interesting parallels to how I see a Luke/Vader scene of this type might go. Especially with the father/son bond so emphasized.
I really liked it and I'd love to be kept on the PM list.
OMG I cannot believe how good a Sith Obi-Wan is.
Not like Qui-Gon at all. deadlier I think, who would believe
a sweet blue eyed georgous Obi-Wan, could be a sith..
Well done and please keep me on the list otherwise I
might have to send Obi-Wan after you!!
Cool, Dark Obi-Wan!! It seems that this sith lord is a much better master than the one Obi-wan was as a jedi. But could he ride it off when Anakin meets Padme? Are those two gonna meet up eventually?
