Sure! Thanks for reading.
Lincoln_6_Echo
It's been fun to imagine Obi as a Sith. He's still got that same reserved manner, but delightfully twisted.
eirene1988
Qui-Gon killed Xanatos and claimed his fortune. In return, Obi-Wan killed Qui-Gon and got the credits and the title of "Big Bad Sith" of the galaxy. Since the Sith ran the senate without the Jedi knowing, I think they could pull off running a huge corporation without the Jedi having a clue.

They're father and son, but they're Sith. It's a balancing act.

I see Obi as a very patient teacher, whether as Jedi or Sith.

I think Obi-Wan would do whatever is necessary!

He does seem happier as a little Sithling. I'm just saying...

Bad Obi-Wan is SO much fun to write. It's of the Dark Side.

Will do and glad you like it!

Chapter 6: Learning to Hunt
Anakin handled the controls of the sleek little craft with complete confidence. Obi-Wan, a more than adequate pilot himself, had noted Anakin’s talent for piloting when the boy was quite young. He was content to sit back and let Anakin fly the craft, which had been designed according to Obi-Wan’s own specifications. Anakin, even at the age of twelve, had had a good idea of what he wanted to see in a ship and had given his own input as well. As a result, the ship was both beautiful and supremely functional.
Not a large ship, there was really only comfortably room for three or four beings. On this particular journey, there were only the two of them. Giving Anakin a nod, Obi-Wan retreated to his private quarters, grateful for a chance to meditate on the coming confrontation.
The Jedi spy had left their planet two days ago and was making his meandering way across the system. It had been almost ridiculously simple to place a tracking device on the Jedi ship. There was no need to follow the Jedi directly; they simply observed his signal and when the time felt right, Anakin had given the word that it was time to leave. They had caught up quickly because Anakin had simply followed the Jedi directly, not taking the same twisted path that the Jedi had followed.
Obi-Wan had left every detail up to Anakin. If Anakin failed, he would have only himself to blame. If he succeeded, as Obi-Wan fully expected him to do, then the triumph would be his alone as well. Anakin would not be able to look to his Master for answers, nor would he have to wonder if it was his Master’s skill or his own that had gained him the advantage.
Win or lose, Anakin would determine his own fate.
Anakin himself had placed the tracking device, cleverly tucking it away where it would not be observed during anything but the most intense inspection. One would have to actually be looking for the device to find it, and even then, it would prove most difficult. Obi-Wan had watched from the shadows while Anakin worked, unable to help the pride that welled within him as Anakin leapt to safety, the first step of his plan achieved.
Just an hour ago, Anakin had come to him and murmured that it was time. “The Force tells me it’s time, Master.” Since Anakin had been given permission to take on the Jedi, the boy had grown reserved and quiet, retreating to his role as apprentice. Later, when the boy’s victory could be celebrated, they would become father and son again. For now, it was best to step back and into their more distant roles.
Closing his eyes, Obi-Wan contemplated trying to see what the future held for his apprentice. Future sight had never been his strongest gift, but there were times when the Force would grant him a momentary glimpse of the future. Anakin already had a much more developed gift in that area, but Obi-Wan sensed that the boy did not want to call on those skills.
He approved of Anakin’s wisdom. The future was what they made it, and even future sight was notoriously unreliable, providing peeks into a future that was not what it seemed.
Anakin must approach the confrontation fully expecting to be the victor – anything less was not acceptable. There was victory and there was death, nothing else existed. Anakin understood this on an elemental level.
With a deep sigh, Obi-Wan released his own anxieties to the Force. Whatever waited for Anakin, there was nothing that Obi-Wan could do to change it. Nor would he, even if given the chance.
This was Anakin’s first test. If he failed, then the legacy of the Sith was threatened and it would be up to Obi-Wan to restore the foundation by finding another apprentice. Anakin understood this, and did not question Obi-Wan’s love as his father, even while knowing that Obi-Wan, as his Master, must look beyond his own emotions and forward to the future.
Destiny was fast approaching, but all Obi-Wan could do was wait.
~~~~~~
Anakin heaved a small sigh of relief when Obi-Wan left the cockpit. Quickly, he wiped the sweat from his palms, ruefully aware that his pulse was beating faster than it should. If his Master had noticed these telltale signs of anxiety, he had given no indication. Both of them had been holding up their shields more tightly, Anakin noticed.
Obi-Wan was trying to hide his fear for Anakin, while Anakin could think only of the coming battle.
As he followed the Jedi he intended to kill, he experimented with trying to find him in the Force. Sometimes, he thought he sensed him. It was a vague feeling, more an impression than anything else.
It was strange to feel the pulses of light that surrounded the Jedi. Unlike the Force that surrounded his Master, and the cool, dark depths that he plumbed in his own explorations, the Force around the Jedi was warm and bright.
Anakin hated it, for he felt too exposed when he brushed up against its blaze.
The Force was not supposed to feel like that – it was a shadowed place, hiding new gifts in every darkened corner. Every time he delved into the darkness, he came away awed at the thought of what the Force could do, what it
would
do at his command.
He allowed himself a smile as he imagined what it would feel like to face a Jedi. At last, he could reveal his true nature, but only if victory was assured. And if, by some miracle, the Jedi defeated him, then his Master would be there to guarantee that their existence remained a secret.
Somehow, Anakin mused, he did not anticipate a loss.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Master?”
It was Anakin’s voice that drew him from his meditations, and Obi-Wan opened his eyes to see the young man standing in the door to his cabin.
“Yes, Anakin?”
Beneath Anakin’s serene façade, Obi-Wan could sense the excitement, the thrill of anticipation that rippled through him. Obi-Wan almost smiled, but repressed it. He did not want Anakin to think that he viewed this moment lightly, or that he was amused.
“The Jedi has landed, just as I suspected he would,” Anakin said.
“Very good,” Obi-Wan said, allowing himself a slight smile to show that he was pleased with Anakin’s success thus far. “And where did he land?”
“A small dustbowl of a planet,” Anakin answered. “Tatooine, it says on the charts.”
Obi-Wan allowed only a flicker of memory to pass through him, and he quickly released it into the Force. Anakin was too excited to notice, and for that, Obi-Wan counted himself grateful.
Would Anakin feel anything when they landed? Would Tatooine call to him? It was there that the boy had spent his earliest years, and such memories might be buried but there were very seldom lost. He would have to wait and see.
~~~~~~~~~~
Anakin landed the craft smoothly, even paying the port fees after haggling for a moment. Obi-Wan had to hide a grin when the man shuffled away grumbling at the fee he had collected. Anakin shrugged when Obi-Wan quirked an enquiring brow at him.
“Why waste credits?” Anakin said. “They’re ours, not his. Besides, he got more from us than he would a native.”
Obi-Wan nodded, wondering what Anakin would say if he knew he
was
a native. They gathered their few belongings and arranged to rent a speeder, which Anakin insisted on driving. Obi-Wan gave a silent sigh, knowing that both his hair and his garments would never be the same after a ride with Anakin at the controls.
At last, Anakin came to a halt near an innocuous looking building. Obi-Wan noted that Anakin had carefully concealed the speeder in the shadows of a nearby alley that gave him a good view of the entrance to the building.
“He’s in there,” Anakin said, pointing. He looked at Obi-Wan and grinned. “He thinks he’ll find some pirates there, I guess.”
“And he probably will,” Obi-Wan muttered, tugging at the collar of his shirt.
Gods! Why would anyone live on this planet!
It was rather like sitting inside an oven he decided, a dirty, dusty oven. His lips pulled down with distaste, but Anakin did not even seem to notice the suffocating heat. “This place is rife with them,” he added. “A hive of scum and villainy,” Obi-Wan said dryly.
“A good place to blend in,” Anakin replied.
“A good place to get into trouble,” Obi-Wan retorted. No matter how gifted Anakin was, he was still a teenaged boy.
Anakin snorted at that. “That sounds like fun, Master.”
Obi-Wan gave a long-suffering sigh. “You
would
think that, Anakin.”
The two fell silent for a moment. “So… where do you go from here?” Obi-Wan asked.
“I’m going to wait for him to come out of there,” Anakin replied thoughtfully. “Then I’m going to follow him, on foot if I have to.”
“Why on foot?” Obi-Wan knew what the correct answer was, but he wanted to test Anakin’s reasoning.
“Because a speeder is much more conspicuous, Master,” Anakin answered with a hint of impatience. “On foot, he’s less likely to notice me. It’s not like I have to keep him in sight,” Anakin added with disdain. “Besides, no one notices a kid.” He looked around. “Especially not here.”
“Good,” Obi-Wan replied. “You’re still thinking.” He put a reassuring hand on Anakin’s shoulder. “Don’t let the excitement of the moment make you do anything stupid.”
“I won’t,” Anakin answered solemnly.
Their eyes met. “I know,” Obi-Wan finally replied. “I trust you.”
They heard the door creak open and turned their eyes at the same moment. The Jedi sauntered out, looking overly casual in Obi-Wan’s view. Still, the clothes were right for the part, he admitted.
As they watched, the Jedi walked down the dusty street. Anakin jumped out of the speeder, grabbing a small bag as he did so. For just a moment, he stopped and met Obi-Wan’s eyes once more. “I’ll meet you at the ship when this is done,” he said quietly.
Obi-Wan considered him for a moment, seeing once again the little boy who had been so scared. How proud he was of him! Anakin met his eyes with confidence and a hint of recklessness. That could be dangerous, he admitted, but Anakin would have to learn the dangers of being cocky on his own. Otherwise, the lesson would be of no value.
“May you command the Force to your will, apprentice,” Obi-Wan said softly.
“You also, my Master.”
Caught up!
It's chilling and eerie to see Anakin and Obi-Wan so calm and matter-of-fact about killing, ruling over others, etc. *shivers* And their relationship...wow! It's so loving, in a sense, yet at the same time, they both know that it is about protecting their legacy and that failure is not an option, and if you do fail, well...
Amazing work, K!
Excellent.
Destiny was fast approaching, but all Obi-Wan could do was wait.
Spoken like a true Father. His son has to find his own way. But I bet Obi-Wan will come to his rescue if necessary.
Looks like redemption is just not in the cards for anyone here.
And that poor, unsuspecting Jedi ...
Tough read all around.
Yes, Anakin will have to learn his lessens the way every other Sith has, won’t he? But somehow, I trust Obi-Wan’s teachings better this way. Warped, I know, but that’s me!
The interaction seemed so real here, and I understand Obi-Wan’s musings. Makes me think something might happen while on Tattooine. [face_whistle]
Awesome job!
