Sable Knight

Issue #1

The planet Kashyyk. Near the end of the Clone Wars.

Standing atop a massive Juggernaut from which he could see nearly the entire battlefield, Jedi Master Quinlan Vos energized the comlink on his wrist and solemnly reported, “We are victorious, Master Yoda. The droid army has been wiped out.”

The small Jedi Master encouragingly responded, “Very good, Master Vos. Begin regrouping our clones, you may. Meet you at the forward command station, I will, after reporting our victory to the Jedi Council, I have.”

“As you wish, Master Yoda.”

Victory, Quinlan thought. If this is a victory, I never want to face defeat.

The vile stench of victory – the gut wrenching smell of charred flesh along with the acrid odor of burning droids – was enough to make Vos want to vomit. The war hardened Jedi looked down 30 meters to the ground below, and saw a wookiee whose fur had been completely incinerated off its body from a grenade blast – a vision that would surely haunt his nightmares for years to come…if he even had years left to live.

This was only his second assignment as a General, and he was lucky it wasn’t his last.

But in the mind of a Jedi, luck was a myth.

“Khaleen!”

Master Vos had not heard the order given to his very own clone troopers - an order which was already claiming the lives of countless Jedi around the galaxy. He could only feel Death breathing down upon him a second before his lifeless body was flung high into the air away from the exploding behemoth.

“Commander Tehara, Order 66 executed without error for traitor Quinlan Vos,” Juggernaut Captain Nemin reported. “Recommend confirming the kill.”

“Very well, Captain,” Tehara replied. “We’re confirming the kill now.” The clone commander pointed to three of his fellow foot soldiers, “Jax, take Quellin and Zero and make sure Vos has been eliminated. Report back upon completion.”

“Yes, sir!” Flanked by clone troopers Quellin and Zero, Jax ran down to where Quinlan’s charred body was lying, nearly fifty meters from where the Jedi Master was standing only moments before. Before the Emperor gave them Order 66.

Jax put his middle and forefinger on Quinlan’s neck for thirty seconds – the standard time the clones used to confirm a kill – and felt no pulse whatsoever. There were no signs of breathing, so after the corpse was second checked by Zero, Jax was satisfied with the kill. “Commander, Vos has been successfully eliminated.”

“Very well, Jax. Get back up to the command center immediately. Master Yoda has rebelled and is attempting to escape with a couple of wookiees. We are in pursuit now.”

Jax looked up to the command center and could see the disturbance all the way from where he was standing. He looked back down to Vos, “Sir, what should we do with the body?”

“Leave it! We don’t have time! Get back-“, and when the transmission turned to complete static, Jax and his two fellow clone troopers doubled back quickly to assist in capturing Master Yoda.

The moon known as Antar 4. Nine months prior.

Recently, Quinlan Vos had come to Count Dooku and told him that he had left the Jedi Order, that it disgusted him, as did the Republic, and he was willing to do whatever it took to join the ranks of Dooku and his Separatist Army. Count Dooku was more than elated to oblige the disillusioned warrior.

Dooku had already begun to train Vos in the ways of the Sith, and knowing that there could only be one Master and one Apprentice, started to think that if the opportunity ever arose, Vos may be the perfect solution to a lethal entanglement with Lord Sidious.

“Tell me, Master Vos,” Count Dooku began as he pulled a small holocron from his robe, “what have the Jedi taught you about the ancient art of den-li manna?”

Den-li?” Vos asked as he took the holocron from Dooku. “It is strictly forbidden by the Order.”

Dooku laughed at the idiocy of the Jedi. “Further proof they are all fools. How can they have the audacity to forbid a practice without even telling you why it is so evil that it mustn’t be allowed?”

“They said it was a form of suicide.”

“Suicide?”, the Sith Lord mocked. “Maybe a for a padawan, but for someone with your skill and wisdom, den-li manna could mean the difference between life or death.”

Kashyyk. The present.

Quinlan had no idea how long he had been lying in that spot, but all he all knew was when he awoke, everyone was gone, save his deceased brothers-in-arms.

They forgot about me, he thought. Maybe my luck is changing.

Quinlan felt the disturbance in the Force a second before the other Juggernaut opened fire, and immediately he employed the den-li manna practice that he learned from Count Dooku and the Sith holocron all those months ago.

For den-li to be successful, the user must imagine their Force essence and their physical self connected by a thread, and the thread must be a thought so powerful that it can bind the physical world and the netherworld together without breaking.

For Quinlan Vos, that thread was the love of his life, the woman carrying his unborn child, Khaleen Hentz.

Upon realizing he was about to be fired upon, Quinlan allowed his Force essence to become separated from his body, and focusing on Khaleen and imagining the perfect life they might get to share together someday, was the only thing that kept his essence from completely detaching itself from the crude matter of his physical self.

With its spirit so far away, the body’s basic functions, such as breathing and the beating of the heart, slow down to the point where the body seems all but dead. Like Dooku said, for a beginner, den-li could be a form of suicide, but for Quinlan Vos, it was the difference between life and death.

Now that he had survived his near death experience, Quinlan knew three things. One, he had a splitting headache. Two, he had to get offworld, and fast. And three, he had to get to Khaleen before anyone else did.

There was only one problem.

He had no idea where Khaleen was hiding.

Yeah, it's been killin' me not having the time or energy to write, so since I actually had the whole afternoon off, I didn't want to miss a perfect opportunity to write a little bit. I too love Vos, so I'm glad you guys enjoyed this. I'll definitely update when I can. Thanks!
