Your description of Alderaan… *sighs* I wish more was known about it. It is so deified in canon (with good reason, since it was martyred).

“Her Highness is speechless,” Han began. “Something I thought wasn’t possible.”

laugh I am amazed that you manage to somehow keep Han as Han, no matter the role. That has to be a Force talent, or something!

“Come,” Bail said with a beaming smile. “We’ve prepared a magnificent breakfast.”

It suddenly occurs to me (and you can shoot me later, but I’ll have my say now) that Anakin might be very uneasy with Leia being around Bail. After all, wouldn’t Bail be tempted to tell her the truths about her mother to counter the lies of Vader? That Padme believed in, and wept for, Democracy???

Great posts!! I'm sorry I missed them

I loved your description of Alderaan; it sounded so beautiful! It's seeming like Luke is starting to see things more like Leia does. I like how you brought Winter onto the scene! And the relationship between Han and Leia is cute with their little arguments and comments! Can't wait for more! Good luck with DRL...

PonyTricks - Now Leia is stealing Han's personal aide out from under him. (ok... that sounds, um, bad...) -- Gutter mind tongue

Kestrel_Kenobi - Irish - You’re doing a great job with this story. I love the pacing of it...and the little funnies you put in.

“Her Highness is speechless,” Han began. “Something I thought wasn’t possible.”

This made me

I liked this as well - The table was silent for a few minutes, but of course the silence was broken by none other than His Annoyingness, that was the new nickname Leia had come up with for the Senator.

Good to see Yoda too…I really like that little troll!

“Many roles you must play in order to fulfill your destiny. Difficult your journey will become, afraid to ask for help you must not be.”

I hope Leia can find her way in all this turmoil.

Lovely work - I look forward to the next update.
-- blush Thank you - I'm always trying to find a balance between drama and comedy.

Alishu06 - ooohhhhhhhh I liked it!!!!! More soon please!!!!!!!!!!! And she took Winter from Han hahahahahahahahahaha oh yeah show him!!! -- Oooookay!!!!! wink

Amidala66 - How could you think that this post wasn't wonderful???

I thought that you did a great job. I can't believe Leia is going to take Winter away from Han.

Please pm me when you update.
-- Again thank you. I feel bad, I hope you all think I wasn't trying to fish for compliments.

Liesl - Who will Winter choose: The Solo or the Princess? Hard choice there.

So with Leia feeling torn, it's going to be interesting to see how she her reasoning for choosing the path she does.

How could this chapter be a let down? It's every bit as good as the last update!
-- How could anyone not chose "The Solo"? I know we would batting

Lady_Jade - You know, despite the fact that we saw Alderann for all of about 5 seconds....I always get a peaceful feeling whenever it is mentioned. I really don't know why......

But its good to see that Leia knew she could go there to really think about what her future holds for her. Talk about pressure

The table was silent for a few minutes, but of course the silence was broken by none other than His Annoyingness, that was the new nickname Leia had come up with for the Senator.

His Annoyingness..... Its perfect!
-- It was one of my more brilliant line . . . and that is saying something. wink

DarthIshtar - I loved Leia/Winter here, especially how in-character Winter was and how Leia was more idealistic in her treatment of a servant, which I think she got from Anakin. I also liked Leia/Yoda/Breha and it's giving me plot bunnies for an AU of my own involving Leia, Breha and a force-power... -- I'm all for plot bunnies . . . spice of life.

LadyLunas - I really enjoyed this chapter.

Leia's interactions with everybody, especially Han and Winter, were perfect.

I also enjoyed her conversation with Yoda. Choose your own path, he said. Well, she has many different paths to choose from. Why can't she combine a few of them? It's certainly possible.

I look forward to the next installment.
-- Thanks! Yoda is always hard to do, I never know if I'm breaking up the words correctly.

Arkady - It seems as though Alderaan is bringing more questions than answers for Leia.

Great post.

Arkady
-- Yeah, it always seems that way. When you look for answers more questions are raised.

Golden_Jedi - Hey, I keep missing posts! Do you have an update PM list or something?

Very sweet interaction between Leia and Luke, and Leia and Winter.
-- I do have a PM list, you're now on it.

Zonoma - Your description of Alderaan… *sighs* I wish more was known about it. It is so deified in canon (with good reason, since it was martyred).

This is soooo funny, Leah!!! ROTFLOL!

-- LOL "Yo Daddy"! I should put your quote in my sig, about being able to have Han be Han in any situation and that it's a Force power. I always knew I had some. tongue

WynssaStarflare - Great posts!! I'm sorry I missed them

Howdy folks! Hope everyone had a good weekend, I tried to get this out on Friday but I didn't get it to my beta in time. Big ups to Poe as always and to my lovely crew who are always letting me ramble on about this story.

Chapter 9

The next morning, the Princess awoke to the sound of bird songs carried on the small wind that swirled around her room. Throwing on her robe and slippers, she walked out onto the balcony and took a deep breath. Giant clouds lazily drifted across the sky, casting shadows over the mountains in the distance. The faint laughter of children playing by the lake caught Leia’s attention. She watched as they built sand speeders and hover-boarded on the waves. Feeling the need to have a little relaxation, Leia ran back into her room and changed into her water suit. It was a one-piece that covered her entire body from neck to ankles. She grabbed her breathing device, water protective goggles for her eyes and her fins. Throwing her towel over her shoulder, she headed down to the lake.

Leia’s sandals flopped as she happily made her way through the Palace. Stepping out into one of the many courtyards, she had begun to cross it when a certain Senator suddenly appeared next to her.

“Do you make it a habit of stealing other people’s potential personal aides or am I just special?” his teasing tone alerted the Princess that he was enjoying this little verbal battle between them.

“I don’t know if special is the word I’d use for you, Senator,” Leia said with a smirk.

“Oh?” He arched an eyebrow.

The Princess stopped a moment and pretended to think, “I think scoundrel fits better.”

She continued to walk, noticing that the Senator was momentarily stunned by her words. Of course it took him two strides to catch up with her.

“Scoundrel,” he said as if mulling it over. “I like the sound of that.”

“You would.” The Princess rolled her eyes.

“You’re right.” He paused with a satisfied grin. “I would.”

Cutting Leia off, the Senator now stood leaning on the doorway blocking her only escape. “Excuse me,” she said while folding her arms.

“What’s it gonna take for you to believe that what I was doing the other night was for a good purpose?” he whispered.

“I’ve heard that excuse before. When Kings try to justify the innocent slaughter of his people, or – ”

“Or when an Empire replaces a Republic,” Han’s tone was cautious.

“Choose your words wisely Senator.” The Princess warned. “Don’t forget who you’re speaking to.”

Han leaned down to look her in the eye. “I haven’t.”

Suddenly flustered by how close the Senator was, Leia began to stammer, “Wha-What do you mean?”

Han continued to push. “You had the opportunity to turn me in or take the chip for yourself, but you didn’t. I think you believe in democracy as much as the rest of us.”

“Of course I do. I want what’s best for the galaxy,” Leia’s voice became desperate as she tried to defend what her father had worked hard to create.

His gaze was piercing. “That’s not what I meant and you know it.”

“What do you want from me?! Do you want me to admit that I disagree with my father?” Her voice rose. “Do you want me to admit that I believe in democracy more than the Empire? What?!”

“I just want you to do the right thing, Leia,” his response barely audible. “That’s all.”

“And what’s your definition of ‘the right thing’, Senator?! Because lately everyone seems to have their on version of it!” Leia shouted as tears began to sting her eyes.

“I’m sorry, Your Highness. I know you’re under a lot of pressure –”

“No! You don’t know! You don’t know what it’s like to live a lie. To have to cater to the most evil of men and keep them guessing on what you truly mean. You don’t know what it’s like to believe one thing but show that you’re for another! You have no idea!”

With that, Leia pushed past him and ran to the beach, trying to get away from the tearing in her heart. She violently wiped away her tears, trying to hide any sign of her confrontation with the Senator as she approached the water. Winter was waiting for her by several large blankets that were placed on the beach along with a basket.

“Beautiful day for a swim, Your Highness,” Winter said with a smile.

“It is,” Leia said quickly.

Leia began to put her fins on along with her goggles. She handed Winter her towel and began to walk into the water. She was more than halfway out when she realized she forgot her breathing device. Too mad to go back she deiced to practice her use of the Force. Taking a deep breath, she dove down into the water and began to explore.

For the first minute or two, she was in awe at all the different sea life and the colors. How the water felt so clean and comforting, the way the fish swam to and fro, the seaweed waving back at her in the water. It was all so fresh and exciting, yet even in this new environment she couldn’t escape the life waiting back on the beach. Her argument with Han kept replaying in her head, along with her conversations with Obi-Wan, Luke and her father. No matter where she ran, she would be haunted by this decision.

Leia began to feel the need for air. Swimming to the surface she felt the Force give out a warning but as she looked around she realized it was too late for her to act. The hover board smacked the Princess on the head causing her to almost lose consciousness.

She slowly began to sink into the darkness, Leia tried to swim but her strength was failing her. As water seeped into her lungs she could feel her body giving up. Just before closing her eyes she saw a hand plunge into the water and grabbed her, pulling her upwards. The moment she broke through the surface, she gave a great gasp and coughed.

“I got you – don’t worry,” the person said.

The Princess was too disoriented to figure out who her rescuer was, so she just continued to focus on her breathing and healing her head. Soon they were on the beach and she felt a towel wrap around her. The sun was blinding her to the face of her rescuer when she looked up, but something felt familiar about this person. Another minute later she was being carried back to the Palace.

“Her head wound is already healing,” another voice gasped.

“Senator, bring her here,” the voice of Master Yoda was unmistakable.

Before she knew what was happening, Leia felt herself being placed on a bench. She felt Master Yoda’s hand on her temple.

“On the injury you should focus,” he instructed.

She did as she was told, but something happened. Her vision assaulted her in quick flashes. First the water, then the struggle between light and dark, the voices called out to her, then she saw the light and, finally, the hand which pulled her back to the light. The Princess bolted into an upright position and the first face she saw was that of Han Solo.

“It was you?” she gasped. “You were the hand?”

A confused look crossed the Senator’s brow. “I jumped in after you, yeah.”

Leia’s eyes widened, “Then it’s you. You’re the one who . . .”

Without saying another word she got up and quickly walked away from the group.

--

Winter and Han stood in complete confusion as they watched her retreating form. When Han turned back to look at Yoda, he noticed the Jedi had that look of deep contemplation, which was never a good thing. If Han had learned anything while living with the Jedi Master it was that deep looks of concentration meant something was about to or had already happened.

“Winter, go see if she needs anything,” Han suggested.

“Yes, Sir,” Winter said before leaving.

“I’ve seen that look before,” Han said to Yoda. “What’s happened? What was that all about? Has she officially gone crazy or something?”

“Mistake I made, told you sooner I should have,” Yoda said as she shook his head. Obviously disappointed in himself.

“Told me what? That our only hope for democracy has lost it?” Han said exasperated.

It was never easy getting a straight answer out of a Jedi. At least Obi-Wan was a little more direct when Han had to contact him, plus he didn’t have to deal with the backwards speech.

“A vision the Force has given me,” Yoda began as he started to slowly walk down the corridor.

“A vision? Of the future?” Han said as he began to towel himself dry.

“A vision of events to come, yes.” Yoda paused. “You must watch over the Princess, on all this depends.”

“Me? Babysitting her Royal pain in the – ”

“Said so yourself. Our only hope she is, to bring balance back to the galaxy and to the Force.”

Yoda’s tone was grave, which caused Han to become worried. “Well, how much watching over are we talking about?”

“Protect her from any harm you must and from those who wish harm upon her.” Yoda looked up at the man. “Meant to protect her you were – that much is clear.”

Han threw his hands up, “Ok, I’ll make sure to keep an eye on her.”

“Thank you, Senator. Need each other you do, if you are to survive all that is to come.”

--

Hours later Leia sat alone in the gardens trying to make sense of everything. She was wearing her white drawstring silk pants that had laced designs at the bottom and a matching top with a small v-neck cut and bell sleeves with the same lace design on the cuffs. The late afternoon sun was hitting her in such a way that one could mistake her for a goddess.

“It’s dangerous for angels to wander around alone,” Bail’s soothing voice startled Leia.

She blushed furiously at his compliment. “Viceroy, you’re too kind.”

“I’m honest,” he said while offering his arm to her.

The duo began a stroll through the garden.

“I hope you found the solace you were looking for while on Alderaan?” he asked.

“In a way,” she reflected.

“But . . .” He gave her a look, knowing she was holding back.

“Tell me about my mother.” Her request was earnest, even if she was using it as a distracting tactic.

“Only if you promise to tell me what’s bothering you?” Bail countered.

“You can take the Senator out of the Senate – ”

“But you can’t take the Senate out of the Senator,” Bail finished with a chuckle. “It’s true.”

They stopped in front of a large white-petal flower. The petals had spots by the stems that were blotted with red.

“Your mother loved this flower. She always thought the flower was crying.”

Leia’s brow wrinkled into a worried expression. Had her father caused her mother so much pain that she would look upon such a beautiful flower and only see sorrow? Or did she carry burdens similar to her daughters that it weighed on her mind constantly?

“Was she always sad?” Leia asked while caressing the petal.

“Oh no, your mother was full of life,” Bail affectionately spoke. “Especially when she had her mind set on something.”

Leia smiled at the thought. “Stubborn?”

“Only when she needed to be.” He had a far-off look about him as if he was remembering a specific event.

“I wish I could see some of her old Senate sessions,” Leia said as they continued to walk. “But all of her files have been restricted.”

Leia could feel the muscles in Bail’s arm tense as she spoke. Using the Force she brushed his mind a moment and heard a distant memory play.

So this is how liberty dies... with thunderous applause.

Letting go of the Viceroy’s arm as if she had a shock, the Princess gave him a fierce determined look. “If my mother were alive today, would she be part of the Rebellion?”

“Your Highness I don’t – ”

“Viceroy, I beg you to tell me the truth. I am not a little girl any more and I want to know who my mother was. Who she really was, not how she was portrayed. Please,” she pleaded. “I already know she wasn’t in favor of the Empire. Maybe that’s why I came here, because I knew you’d tell me the truth.”

“Princess,” Bail whispered sadly as he shook his head. “I can not give you the answers you seek.”

Leia hung her head in defeat, not seeing Bail drop to one knee. She was suddenly enveloped in a hug and it was then she heard his words.

“Your mother believed in democracy above all else, she would give her life to preserve it,” he breathed into her ear.

When he pulled back, Bail had a smile on his face and his demeanor had changed. He kissed the girl on her forehead and produced a flower from behind his back. “All will be alright young Princess. Just follow your heart.”

“Princess Leia! Princess Leia,” 3PO’s frantic voice echoed in the garden.

“Over here 3PO,” she shouted.

R2 and 3PO appeared from around the corner, though 3PO could not express himself with his facial features his body langue spoke volumes. “There you are. You have an urgent message from Coruscant.”

3PO handed her a data pad which she read quickly. Her face became ashen as she re-read the message. “I have to leave. Immediately!”

EDIT: So Han saved her from drowning...that should open up communication between them. I wonder if Han will tell Leia what Yoda told him. It might be hazardous to his health at this point though. I wonder what the big emergency is back on Coruscant.... Great post!

What could have happened on Coruscant? Luke, maybe? Or is it something more serious...

I'm betting it's Luke, but if I had it my way, I would have it be Vader dying and Leia have to run the Empire all of a sudden...

Anyway, the symbolism of the whole thing with Han and the pulling her back to the light was perfect! I loved Yoda, too.
