RE: In The Shadow Of The Sith -- Post ROTS Major AU (Obi Wan/Leia/Han/Luke/Anakin) UPDATED 12/1 CH
I swear I'm not dead. The family has been keeping me very busy, but once the New Year hit things quited down a bit for me to post this. As I said before, my other story is litterly on it's last chapter (plus an epilogue) so once that's done this story will hopefully be updated faster. Again thank you all for reading and props to Poe and all those I bug when I'm having DWB.
_____________________________________________________
Chapter 3
“Why have you been avoiding Dad?” Luke asked as they walked through the merchant's shop.
Leia was in the next row over, looking at pieces of jewelry. She quickly glanced up and saw Luke staring at her through the shelf. She looked back down at the hand(-) carved trinket, letting her thumb rub over the symbols.
“Who says I’ve been avoiding him?” she mumbled defensively.
“Well any time he’s home – ”
“He’s never home,” Leia commented.
“Do you blame him?” Luke walked around the shelf. “Anytime he’s around you walk in the opposite direction.”
“It’s just – don’t you think some of the things he does are wrong?” Leia whispered.
“Like what?” Luke asked honestly.
“Like the amendment they just passed abolishing non-humanoid alien rights.”
The blank stare Luke was giving her was an indication that he had no idea what she was talking about. Putting the jewelry down, she grabbed his hand and took him out of the shop. Slipping by their escort unit, Leia started to run. She went down several alleys before they stopped.
“Where are we?” Luke asked as he saw children dressed in rags playing in the street.
“The only section of Coruscant in which these creatures can live in,” her sad tone caused Luke to look over at her and he then turned his attention to the children; a small Twi’lek boy came running over to the twins.
“Hi, we’re pretending to be fighter pilots in the Imperial Navy, wanna play?”
“But you’re not allowed to be pilots,” Luke stated in confusion.
“We know,” the Twi’lek was unfazed by Luke’s words. “But it’s still fun to pretend.”
Luke took note at how little clothing the boy had and how dirty he was. The young Prince was beginning to see his sister’s point. He dug into his pocket and pulled out a model of a new fighter he had been given. He handed it to the boy.
“Here.” Luke said with a smile. “It’s easier to pretend when you know what you’re flying.”
“What is it?”
“It’s a prototype. Hasn’t even been built yet,” Luke explained.
“What’s it called?” the boy asked.
“It’s an X-Wing. The S-Foils expand like this.” Luke reached over and split the wings of the ship apart.
“Wow,” the boy breathed. He quickly turned and ran over to his other friends.
“Come on,” Leia said as she patted Luke on the back.
The twins had already started to walk away when the boy called out.
“Wait.” He ran back over to them with two small hand–carved charms. “These are for you. This symbol mean’s ‘peace’.”
He handed the first one to Luke. “And this one mean’s ‘hope’,” he explained as he handing the second to Leia.
“That’s awfully kind of you but we can’t accept –”
“Please,” the boy’s plea cut Leia off. “It’s the only thing we can repay you with.”
“It was a gift,” Luke explained. “There’s no need to repay us.”
“Then these are our gifts to you Your Highness,” the boy said as he gave a small bow. “To remember us.”
Leia looked down at the object in her hand. “I promise we wont forget you.”
“There they are!” A royal guard shouted.
“Mistress Leia, Master Luke where have you been,” 3PO reprimanded.
“Sorry,” they both said at the same time.
They turned and began to walk away, but not before waving goodbye to the small boy who waved with the X-Wing model in hand. The twins watched for a moment as the Twi’lek and his friends began to study the new toy.
“Master Luke, isn’t that your model they’re playing with?” 3PO asked.
“Yeah,” Luke said with a hint of pride. “I gave it to them.”
“That was a very generous thing to do, Sir,” 3PO’s voice was full of pride. “Your mother would have been proud.”
Luke beamed. “Thanks, 3PO.”
Once they were back at the Imperial Palace, the twins headed straight for their suite. Each had been silent on the trip back to the Palace, both studying their new pieces of jewelry. 3PO had explained that the trinkets were made out of Japor –- A plant native to Tatooine and that the shells of the palm sized nut which it produced was used to create protection charms, or some times even love charms. It wasn’t until the twins were in their living room that they spoke again.
“Leia,” Luke said softly. “I know there are a lot of things I don’t know. Like politics and history. And I have a feeling you and Dad are going to keep fighting about certain issues but . . .”
The boy trailed off. Leia felt bad that she could always feel Luke and his emotions yet he could barely feel her.
“We’ll have our fights too, ya know,” Leia tried to laugh.
“Yeah but I’m not gonna stop talking to you just because I disagree with you,” he said a hint of bitterness.
“Is that what’s bothering you?” Leia took a step towards her twin. “You think I’ll ignore you the way I ignore Dad?”
Luke just nodded. “I’ll never do that.” Leia was hurt that Luke would think so lowly of her. “You’re my brother Luke. I love you.”
“Oh, don’t get all mushy on me,” Luke teased.
“I’ll show you mushy.”
Leia quickly used the Force and tossed a pillow at Luke’s head. Within moments objects were flying around the room.
“Oh my goodness, your Highnesses, stop this immediately,” 3PO shouted over their laughter.
The golden droid was soon pelted with several pillows and cushions causing him to fall over.
“Sorry 3PO,” the twins giggled as they helped the droid up.
“Master Luke, you have a training session in several minutes. Please go and change into the proper attire.”
“Ok.” Defeated, Luke kicked a pillow and headed towards his room. “Hey, Leia.”
“Yeah?”
“You’ll be a great Empress some day,” he said with a smile before heading into his room.
Leia stood there a moment and felt a sense of comfort wash over her. One of the many things she had been worried about in these past months was that Luke would not forgive her for this new stance against their father. Ever since she had seen the holo-recording of her mother asking Obi Wan to watch over them, she couldn’t look her dad in the eye. Luckily for her, he had been busy addressing labor issues and several heath crises on mid rim worlds.
“Princess,” 3PO said in a hushed tone. “It’s time.”
“Ok.”
Leia headed for her room and saw R2 waiting by the closet. “Is the lift going to get stuck again?”
R2 beeped several times before repositioning himself to roll into the large walk in closet. “Well I’m glad I’ll have company this time if it does.”
She patted the droid on his domed head and followed him over to the wall in the back of the closet. Quickly glancing back to make sure no one was watching Leia hit the secret button and entered the lift. Moments later she was in the secret passage heading for the Temple. To her surprise Cody was waiting in the closet for her.
“Cody?” Leia laughed, but was soon silenced as Cody covered her mouth.
“Imperial Guard inspection,” he whispered as he pulled her close to him. “General Kenobi told me you were coming and asked that I meet you here.”
“Imperial Inspection?” Leia’s eyes grew as big as 3PO’s. “What’s that?”
Cody let go of Leia and put his ear to the door. “About a year ago the Royal Guard started making random visits.”
“Why?” Leia continued her hushed tone as she walked over to Cody.
He didn’t answer her so she tugged on his arm. “Cody?”
“Uh – let’s just say they don’t trust my unit,” he explained with a scowl.
“Oh.”
Leia knew her Dad was very paranoid about people betraying him, so Cody’s answer was sufficient enough for her.
“I think they’re out of this area,” Cody gave a sigh of relief. “Come on, kiddo, I’m gonna be training you today.”
“Really!” Leia nearly jumped. “On what?”
Cody palmed the closet open then peered into the hall. “General Kenobi tells me your father isn’t teaching you to fly, fire a blaster or any combat military training.”
“He’s only teaching Luke, because he’s supposed to take over the military some day,” Leia said disappointedly.
They left the closet and started to head down the hall away from Obi-Wan’s meditation room.
“Well,” Cody smirked, “I know the Imperial Officer who’s training you brother.”
“You do?” Leia asked, a little surprised.
“Yup, and he’s a complete Nerf. Which is good for you.”
“Why’s that?” Leia asked as she jogged to keep up with the big steps Cody was taking.
He stopped and smiled. “You’re being trained by the best military unit the Empire has.”
“If you’re so good, then why are you guarding Obi-Wan? Why aren’t you out chasing the Rebels?” Leia asked innocently; she didn’t catch Cody’s moment of hesitation.
“Let’s just say I owe General Kenobi,” Cody explained before he started to walk fast again.
“Like a life debt?” Leia sprinted to catch up.
Cody stopped at a door. “In a way.”
Instead of palming it open he gave a strange knock. A trooper answered the door, then stepped out of the way for them to enter. Leia’s jaw dropped as she saw all the equipment. It was a large hall, which had been turned into a training facility -- flight simulators, a firing range, an armory and all sorts of work out equipment and several sparring areas.
“From now, on you’re training won’t revolve solely on Jedi Training.”
“It won’t?” Leia said as she continued to stare at equipment.
“Nope. Several times a week you’ll train with us as well as General Kenobi, plus you will have study time in the Jedi Library.”
For the next hour, the Princess received hand-to-hand combat training as well as beginner lessons with the flight simulators and at the firing range. By the time she and R2 were back in the lift heading up to her room, she was exhausted. She entered her room to find 3PO frantically pacing.
“She’s almost ready, Sir,” 3PO shouted before spotting Leia and R2 emerging from the closet. “Mistress Leia, oh thank the maker you’re already in your training clothes.”
The droid grabbed Leia and dragged her into the living room. To Leia’s surprise her father was waiting along with Luke. “Here she is Master Anakin.”
“Where were you?” Anakin snapped.
“I – uh,” Leia began to stammer.
“It’s my fault, Sir. She was excited that you were coming home and wanted to take a nap to be fully rested for when you arrived.”
3PO was so convincing that Leia forgot he was covering for her. Leia looked over at her brother who was trying to communicate something with her. Unconsciously, Leia began to focus on him through the Force.
Tell him you missed him.
Leia’s face went from worried to shock in a matter of seconds.
Luke?
But her brother did not respond. Confused, Leia decided to just take her brother’s advice. “I’m sorry, Dad,” Leia spoke softly. “I missed you and I wanted to be ready for when you returned. I must have overslept.”
She looked back up to see Anakin smiling at her.
“My little Leia,” Anakin said as he walked over to her and picked her up. “I’m sorry. I just hate being away from you both for so long.”
“It’s okay, Dad,” Leia mumbled as she gave him a quick kiss on his cheek.
“No.” Anakin put her down then sat down in one of the larger chairs. “You’re gonna have a lot of questions in these next couple of years – both of you.”
Anakin glanced over at Luke. “But remember,” his tone becoming serious again. “That no matter what you read in the history books, the Republic failed. The only way to get things done is direct action.” He paused for a moment. “Your mother felt the same way.”
“Dad are you sure?” The words were out of her mouth before Leia could stop them.
“I will not debate you on this Leia – ”
“But Dad –”
“Enough!” Anakin roared.
The room was electric as the Force danced around them ready to be called on by the Sith Lord.
“Dad,” Luke’s scared voice broke the tension. “Why are your eyes yellow?”
Leia watched as her father looked into the mirror over the fireplace, his eye’s matching the flames below. For a moment Leia didn’t know if he would yell and scream like he did the day she discovered Obi Wan or if he would just try and explain what was going on with him. Instead he quickly turned and left the room without another word.
“Well,” Luke sighed. “Lets go spar in the training room for a little bit.”
“Luke I didn’t mean to – ”
“I know.” Luke’s understanding tone allowed Leia to relax a little. He put his arm around her as they left the suite. “I always said you were the trouble maker.”

poor Luke and Leia...
I think Leia is going to become a pretty good Jedi with all the training she's going to have. Can't wait for the next part.

Why do I think that Luke is more understanding than we give him credit for? He might not just be a puppet for his father to tug on. He still has his loyalties to his sister.
I wonder if he'll be doing more to protect her in the future when she - eventually - begins to argue more frequently with their father. He knows their father has a temper and will start doing and saying things he'll regret later. Perhaps he hopes that if he intervenes, his father will stop and think before he totally alienates Leia...
Excellent update,

HEY IEJ!
Poor Leia--she's at that tough age when people start to question everything, including their parents. And I'm sure that's a lot more difficult when your father is part of a system that is inherently flawed. I am glad to see Leia's usual willingness to question emerge.
Great update!

-- Luke will have a lot of struggle through out this story, because he wants to believe in his father so much, but he sees how Leia is correct in her arguments. So for him it’s an on going battle to try and see his father's point of view but play mediator between Anakin and Leia.

Most excellent update, my friend. I absolutely love that Leia is beginning to train under Cody in the combat arts! And I am glad that you have not neglected to highlight the tension that Leia's discovery has created in their family.
-- Why thank you Ms. Z, I know we talked about this and I'm glad you liked the tension.
