Bless the Child

Disclaimer: If you think they're mine, you're sadly mistaken. I borrowed them, hugged them, squeezed them, called them George, then gave them back like a good girl. All things Star Wars belong to George Lucas.

Author's Note: This is definitely an AU. My brother and I were having a Star Wars marathon, and I started wondering if things would have turned out differently had Qui-Gon lived and been Anakin's Master… So this is my attempt to find out.

Warning: I'm circumventing canon here. TPM happened… mostly. Almost everything afterwards is up in the air. Oh, yes, and Waqkemé Noori is Ophelia's, but she kindly let me borrow her. Waqkemé's stories are The First Four Days by Ophelia, and she's also found in DarthIshtar's Wayward Beings. I'll be posting every other week.

Prologue:
Rewind
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"You travel back along the line of time and you don't find the past, but another world, another bracket of consciousness. The earth would be the same, you see, or almost the same. Same trees, same rivers, same hills, but it wouldn't be the world we know. Because it has lived a different life, it has developed differently. The second back of us is not the second back of us at all, but another second, a totally separate sector of time. We live in the same second all the time. We move along within the bracket of that second, that tiny bit of time that has been allotted to our particular world."
--Clifford D. Simak, "City" 1952
~*~*~*~
Night blanketed Theed in darkness. In the hastily cleaned Palace, the main players responsible for taking back Naboo slept the sleep of the just. Outside, the capitol still showed signs of both battles, but was not heavily damaged. After all, the Trade Federation had wanted the planet in one piece.
Extra security, however, had been assigned, and the planetary defense network was being upgraded to prevent another invasion. It had never before occurred to either the people or the ruling council that it would be needed; peace had reigned for so long that the thought of even needing defense was alien. But recent events had proven that supposition to be false; there was no reason to believe that the Trade Federation would leave them alone, so they were preparing for the eventuality.
Now was the time for resting, restoration, and recuperation. The dead had only just been laid to rest with honor; the signs of the battle and the invading droid army, parts of which were strewn over Theed and the battleground, were still being cleared away. Tomorrow or even the next day would be soon enough to celebrate the expulsion of the invaders from their homeworld. It was to be a new age for Naboo--one of mutual cooperation between the Gungans and the Naboo people. Their battle had not been without losses, but the heroes of Naboo had triumphed.
Yoda, as a representative of the Jedi Council, had come and granted Qui-Gon's request to train eight-year-old Anakin Skywalker and confirmed Obi-Wan Kenobi's elevation to Knighthood. Tucked in their rooms at the palace, two Jedi and the little boy who, by accident or fate, had saved the planet, slept, waiting for the morning's celebration, and the ship that would take them back to Coruscant.
On the other side of the galaxy, a lone man examined his latest profit margins and smiled. It was a good time for business. His latest merchandise was much more promising than his past enterprises. They were young, healthy, and--best of all--there were no known relatives to complain to the authorities. His employees just had to be careful not to… glut the market. Too many missing would mean an investigation, which he couldn't afford. It had been expensive enough to obtain the neural implants to suppress the pesky… talents of his merchandise.
What is it with bad guys and stealing Jedi kids, might I ask? You'd think after the first thousand attempts that they'd get the point that it DOESN'T WORK!!
An interesting beginning. AUs where Qui-Gon lives always have the potential to be really good and interesting, in my book. I like what you've done so far. And the promise of Kemé showing up makes me happy! happy
Wow! I was half-panicing over posting this....
Draconarius- Well, if you think about it, Force-sensitive or not, Temple kids would be a good target... well, if you discount the Jedi. No realitives to raise a fuss. They're kept healthy and well-fed. And if you put neural inhibitors in their heads to keep them from touching the Force when you don't want them to... Well, that makes the easy to control. And since when were petty crooks all that bright? grin
BrentusofGath-- Well, I had to have some kind of plot to hang all the rest from. wink This wants to be an epic. It wants to end up spanning years, with several different stories and plots...
dianethx-- Ma'am, yes ma'am! *snaps to attention and salutes* wink Okay, I've hung out with JAGaholics for too long... Seriously though, we should be spending some time at the Temple, so we'll run into lots of canon and non-canon characters. grin The "usual suspects" seemed to be a good way to go... especially since I'm thinking of this spanning years.
Zonoma-- Yes, my Master.
DaenaBenjen42-- I'll be posting once a week. So stay tuned next Monday for chapter one.
Stella_Ripple-- What I really hated about TPM is that they killed Qui-Gon. I've always hated that. He was too cool to die...
solojones-- Woohoo! Another Kemé fan. I thought that she'd come in useful. grin Ophelia has been reading this--I wanted her to see what I'm doing with Kemé.
Layren-- Yes'm. You're added to my list. grin
Thanks, y'all for the response. I do have a little cushion, so weekly updates are definately in the future... and chapters will be longer than the prologue, I promise. grin
BrightFeather
Chapter 1:
Beginnings
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"Every phrase and every sentence is an end and a beginning,
Every poem an epitaph. And any action
Is a step to the block, to the fire, down the sea's throat
Or to an intelligible stone: and that is where we start."
--T. S. Eliot, from "Four Quartets: Little Gidding"

~*~*~*~

Qui-Gon Jinn sat up in bed, instantly awake. Something was wrong; he could feel it. He closed his eyes briefly and, with a moments thought, traced it. Anakin. He pushed the blankets back and slipped out of the soft bed. Silently, he left the room and padded quickly down the hallway to the room that the Queen's handmaidens had assigned to the child.

He hurried inside and over to the side of Anakin's bed. "No, NOOOOO," Ani cried, still asleep.

"Ani," Qui-Gon said softly. He ducked as an ornament flew at him. The child thrashed around in the bed, kicking the covers off in the throes of his nightmare. He laid his hand on Anakin's shoulder and tried to soothe away the nightmare, but it only seemed to intensify it. More objects began to levitate and fly around the room, smashing into walls.

He sat down and put both hands on the boy's shoulders. "Wake up, Anakin," he said.

Anakin stirred restlessly as the door opened again. Qui-Gon sighed. The ruckus must've woken Obi-Wan--usually his padawan could sleep through almost anything. "I won't, I WON'T," Anakin said.

"What's the matter?" Obi-Wan asked with a yawn.

Qui-Gon barely spared him a glance. "Nightmare," he said. "Anakin, it's all right. Wake up."

Obi-Wan ducked. "I see," he said with a wince as something breakable collided with the wall near his head.

"Go back to bed," Qui-Gon said softly. "I'll take care of this."

"Yes, Master," Obi-Wan murmured, then left the room.

Qui-Gon caught a little jealousy coming from his apprentice, but shunted it away to deal with later. Little Anakin needed him at the moment. "Ani," he called again, "wake up." He smoothed some tousled blond hair away from the boy's face.

"NOOOOOOOOOO!" Anakin screamed, then sat straight up, eyes flying open and breathing hard.

"You're safe, Ani," Qui-Gon said softly, still trying to soothe the boy.

Items crashed to the floor, startling Anakin. He jumped slightly and began to look around frantically. "Qui-Gon, sir," he choked, then threw himself at the Jedi and buried his face in Qui-Gon's shirt. Ani's shoulders shook, and Qui-Gon could feel the tears as they soaked into his sleep clothing.

What really disturbed him was the fact that the child cried soundlessly. It was as if crying was something that he could be punished for. He rubbed Anakin's back gently. "It's all right , Ani," he murmured.

After a few minutes, Anakin pulled back. "I'm not a baby," he muttered, wiping his eyes. "Only babies cry."

"No, you're not," Qui-Gon agreed mildly. "But you just had a nightmare that scared you; it's only natural to be upset." He hugged the child. "Sometimes, it helps to talk about scary dreams, Ani. And sometimes, among the Jedi, nightmares aren't always just dreams."

Anakin leaned back against him. "They're not?"

"Sometimes," he said. "Sometimes, they're just dreams, but sometimes, they're more. Sometimes, Ani, they come true."

Anakin tightened his grip on the master Jedi. "Don't go away," he begged softly. "Don't die."

"Is that what you saw?" he asked softly.

Anakin nodded. "You an' Obi-Wan were fighting that guy with the red and black tattoos, and horns on his head, and he killed you. And, and, and, then, I was older, and Mom got killed by Raiders, and I went and killed all of them." The child started trembling. "And then I did something real bad and killed lots of people."

Acting out of instinct, Qui-Gon rocked him the way he would a baby from the crèche. "Shh, Ani, it's all right," he murmured. "I'm still here and I promise that you won't be left alone."

'It was a near thing,' the little voice in his head reminded him. 'A little to the right, and the creature would've hit something vital. You were lucky it was only superficial and easily taken care of. And if the force field hadn't deactivated at the right time for Obi-Wan to help, it might have finished you off.'

"I don't want to be bad." Ani rubbed his face with his sleeve.

"You're not bad," he said softly. "You never were. I think what you saw was a possible future and a possible past. I didn't die, Ani and your choices determine your future."

Anakin seemed to consider this for a few minutes. "So if I don't do bad stuff, I won't be bad?" he asked.

"That's right," Qui-Gon answered. He gave the boy a fond smile. "That's the one thing that you can always control, Ani--how you react and what you do."

"Okay," Anakin nodded. "What will happen to me now?" he asked, biting his lip.

It was with that question that the little resistance he'd had to the child melted. Obi-Wan would be Knighted, and the Force had given him another child to raise. It was a question he'd heard before; Anakin wasn't the first child he'd rescued, although he was the most gifted, and one of the few that he'd wanted to train. He'd always had a soft spot for the children--especially the ones who needed help the most. And Anakin was easy to love. "The Council has agreed to let me be your Master," he said.

"Like Watto?" Ani asked.

"No, not like Watto. You're free, Anakin, remember? You'll be my apprentice, my padawan," he explained patiently. "It will be my responsibility to take care of you, protect you, and teach you."

Anakin yawned and snuggled up to him. "Like Mom tried to do," he said.

"Exactly," was the soft answer. "As soon as we make it official, I'll teach you, Ani," he promised. "You're safe with me."

Anakin yawned again. "I feel safe," he murmured. "I want to be just like you."

Qui-Gon smiled. "I want you to be the best Anakin you can be," he whispered.

"'Kay," was the sleepy answer.

Qui-Gon kissed the top of Anakin's head and sighed. Something told him that he'd have his hands full. He had a feeling that Ani could get into more trouble doing exactly what he'd been asked to do than most younglings could get into by disobeying. After all, he'd managed to blow up the droid control ship by staying where he'd been told to stay.
He laid his charge on the bed with a wince and pulled the blankets over him. He wasn't fully healed quite yet; he needed to put himself in another healing trance to complete the process. While the Sith hadn't killed him, he'd gotten a pretty nasty burn out of the fight. Qui-Gon leaned down stiffly and pressed a kiss to Anakin's forehead.

Yoda said that the child was too old; that he had too much fear. Qui-Gon didn't agree. Anakin wasn't by nature a fearful child; he just tended to cling to what he had. Knowing Anakin's background, he found it perfectly understandable. It was human nature to cling to what was stable. Anakin hadn't had much of that--a slave's life guaranteed little. And Watto hadn't seemed to be either a patient or a nice person. It was more than likely that he'd have to help Ani overcome anything that his former owner had done to him.

It was a rare occasion that an older child was taken into the temple for training. It was rarer still to find a child that had entered under such circumstances that wasn't… damaged in some way. Unfortunately, it was the way of the galaxy, the way of the dark side.

The children raised in the temple were usually healthier emotionally by the time they became Padawans. But sometimes what happened on missions changed them. In some form or fashion, most of them were damaged goods and walking wounded. There was only so much that the soul-healers and mind-healers could do. And some wounds never fully healed.

He had sensed no such hurt in Anakin, but he knew that he would still have to tread carefully. The future might be clouded, but it was also malleable. Qui-Gon was determined that, if it were in his power, Anakin would never turn to the dark side and unleash the sheer destruction that someone with his power would be capable of.

He stood and tucked the blankets securely around Ani. Visions were usually rare; it was unlikely that another would come that night. Soft-footed, he walked to the door and closed it but for a crack. If another bad dream interrupted the child's sleep, he would hear it. Besides, there was still the question of Shmi Skywalker to handle--it simply didn't sit well with him that they should leave her behind in slavery on Tatooine.

It was also possible that little Ani would lose much of his fear of losing her if there were no chance of his mother being sold or lost in a bet. If she were safe, and he made sure that Anakin knew he was welcome and wanted, perhaps the fear that Master Yoda dreaded would simply fade away.

Qui-Gon walked back to his room, only to find Obi-Wan waiting for him. "Master?"

Qui-Gon repressed a sigh. "Yes?"

"Why, Master?" Obi-Wan asked softly. "Why must you pick up strays so much, and why must you replace me so quickly?"

Qui-Gon was silent for a few minutes, thinking. "The Jedi," he began softly. "Are a family of adoption. You know that all of us must follow where the Force leads." He paused, searching for the words.

"And the Force led you to the boy?" Obi-Wan asked.

Qui-Gon inclined his head. "Yes," was his simple answer. "And I haven't replaced you, my young padawan." He put his hand on Obi-Wan's shoulder. "The Force just gave me another child to raise and teach its ways."

"I don't like it," Obi-Wan said softly. "The Council--"

"The Council is not infallible," he answered. "And they have also changed their minds--even though they teach it, the Council has forgotten much of compassion." Qui-Gon gave his apprentice's shoulder a squeeze, then let go. "You are ready, Obi-Wan. But you would do well to learn compassion for the, 'pathetic lifeforms,' as you are so fond of putting it."

Obi-Wan bowed slightly. "Yes, Master," he said.

Qui-Gon repressed the urge to roll his eyes with the ease of long practice. "Go to bed, padawan. We have to leave for home tomorrow."

With another murmured, "Yes, Master." Obi-Wan left the room, leaving Qui-Gon alone.

He sat down on the bed and sighed. He was as proud of his padawan as if he'd been Obi-Wan's real father. He had grown a lot over the years, and it hurt a little to let him go. It always did. But he was blessed enough that the Force had seen fit to put a small boy in his path who not only needed his help, but needed his training. Qui-Gon would provide it. He would teach Anakin what he needed to know--not only to be a good Jedi knight, but to be a good, decent, and honorable man. For all intents and purposes, and as far as he was concerned, he had been gifted with another son.

~*~*~*~

Ani held the dust pan as Qui-Gon swept the last of the broken ornaments into it. Silently, he got up and emptied it into a wastebasket. Right after breakfast, Qui-Gon had insisted that they clean up the mess his nightmare had made. He didn't really mind. Mom would've made him help pick up the mess, too.

Anakin missed her. Was she safe without him there to protect her? Was Watto being mean to her? He took the broom from Qui-Gon and started to leave the room to put them back where they'd been found.

"Ani?" Qui-Gon stopped him before he'd left the room.

Anakin scuffed his foot against the polished floor. "Yes, sir?" he said softly.

Qui-Gon knelt down and put his hand on Ani's shoulder. "You miss your mother, don't you?" he asked softly. "And you're worried about her."

Ani nodded. "Yes, sir," he whispered.

"I didn't want to leave her there, little one," Qui-Gon said. "But just because we had to this time doesn't mean that she has to stay on Tatooine forever."

Anakin grinned. "Do you mean that we're gonna try and free her?" he asked.

Qui-Gon nodded. "I'll do my best," he promised.

"Wizard!" he said happily. If Qui-Gon managed to free her and get her off-planet, he wouldn't have to worry about the raiders anymore. And he wouldn't have to worry that Watto would sell her to someone bad and that he'd never see her again. "I'm gonna put these up," he announced.

"Please hurry," Qui Gon requested. "The celebration should start soon, and the Queen wants us to stand with her."

Ani nodded and hurried to put the broom and dustpan away. In a place as big as the Theed palace, he was pretty sure that there were droids to do the sweeping, but he'd made the mess, even if he hadn't meant to, so it was only right that he help clean it up. Besides, the droids were probably still busy cleaning up the droid parts from the battle. His mom made him clean his room at home and this really wasn't that different. He'd always helped her with the house when he could, too. He'd been building Threepio to help her for when he couldn't.

Maybe Master Qui Gon would let him get some of the droid parts and build something from them. If they didn't have time, well, there were almost always odds and ends that nobody wanted that he could probably use. Ani hurried back to his room to join Qui-Gon. "I'm ready," he announced.

Qui Gon looked up and gave him a little smile. "Good. Ani, when we get home, I think we need to stop by the Healers first to get you checked out and vaccinated so you don't get sick." He paused for a moment. "And I was wondering… how would you feel about getting the transmitter taken out?"

He'd been told he was free, but wizard! If he got rid of it, it meant that he'd really be free! Nobody would ever be able to blow him up, then. "Really?" he asked, his eyes wide.

"You're not a slave anymore, Anakin," was the quiet response. "I wouldn't want to keep something like that inside me, either."

Ani hurried over and gave his master an awkward hug. "Thank you," he said almost reverently.

Qui-Gon returned the embrace. "You'll always have choices," he began softly. "I'm glad you decided to come with us."

"So am I," Anakin said cheerfully. "I never thought I'd get to fly a starship!" he said. "It was wizard!"

Qui-Gon laughed softly. "Next time, my young friend, we'll have to find you a place to hide that can't decide to put you in danger by itself. Now, let's get going, we can't keep the celebration waiting."

"Yes, sir!" Anakin danced from foot to foot as Qui-Gon grabbed his cloak and put it on, then followed him out the door.

Okay, I promise that this isn't all going to be mush. But there is some stuff we have to get through before we get to the evil plot.

I like the start, i'm one of the few who tought it would have been better that qui-gon was anakin's master.
I didn't like the negative attitude of obi-wan towards anakin in episode1.
I saw them more as brothers when in fact that anakin needed a solid father figure, wich in the end became palpatine.

I just discovered your story today, and only one word can describe how I feel.

Hooked.

Add a line and sinker if you wish. tongue

I love to read stries were Qui-Gon lives to become Anakin's master. And what's even better is that Obi-Wan didn't die.

If you've got a PM list, please add me. Can't wait to read more. grin
