My last short story went over pretty good (thanks to everyone that commented on it), so, here goes the next one. Enjoy:

Why am I here?. Why did I volunteer for this? For what purpose am I about to, most likely, give my life for? To be quite honest, I don’t really know.

The answer to that question is really quite simple. I’m here to save Master Kenobi, Padawan Skywalker, and Senator Amidala. That’s the simple answer to the question. That’s what Mace Windu said that we were here to do. But that’s not the question I’m asking. That’s the answer to what we are here to do. I want to know why I’m here.

I didn’t have to sign up for this. I didn’t have to volunteer and get myself involved in this little expedition. We have thousands of Jedi Knights and we only needed two hundred. I could have stood by and let anyone else go ahead and do what I’m doing now. But I made a choice. I decided to help. I still don’t know the reason.

As I watch my fellow Jedi get killed mercilessly by droids that have no such thing as feeling, the few of us left crowd into a circle, most of us fighting back to back. Suddenly, the droids stop firing.

I listen as Dooku and Mace exchange words that I’ve known they would exchange all along.

Will you surrender?

No

That’s not exactly what they said, but it pretty much nails it down. I raise my lightsaber, ready to take as many droids down with me before I get hit. Then I look up into the sky.

Hope

I suddenly realize that I’m not going to die here. I’m going to live through this accursed massacre and get a chance to fight another day. The ships lower to the ground and a number of soldiers hop out and fire off a number of rounds at the droids, giving us a chance to get to the ships.

I run quickly up towards the ship. Just as I’m ready to hop onto safety, I feel a sharp pain in my chest and I’m thrown back onto the sand and the dust. I look up towards the bright blue sky, watching on as the gunships take off…without me. That’s when I realize that it really is over. I’m not going to get past this.

And in that moment of realization, I realize something more important than that my life is over.

What did I die for? To what purpose did I give me life so easily for? The answer to that question is really quite simple.

For the greater good

I've got maybe one or two short stories left in my arsenal. So more is coming soon.

That was really cool. I always feel bad about all the Jedi that die on Geonosis. It's the beginning of the end. I can only confort myself by saying that they only had 3 years left until the Purge, so they were going to die anyway.

"Why do you ask so many questions?"
"Because I'm a cheerful, talkative extrovert who likes to make friends."
"Or because you're a bossy, nosy introvert who likes to piss people off"
"Oh, so you did do some research"
"No, just observation"

So near to safety, only to die in the arena! frustrated

Many Jedi died that day, yet as you said, the Purge was only three years after this... sad

I like how your vignettes are taking a look at the side stories of Star Wars! Good job! applause

Thank you. That's the stuff I love to write. The stuff people don't think much about. That's where I can find creativity - in the stuff other people leave alone. Once again, thanks for the comment.

I liked this, Obi-gone! It was interesting to hear the inner thoughts of a Jedi before his death on Geonosis. He does seem confuused by his motivation, though. grin

Nice little story you have here. It's very sad, but very few Jedi did survive. Nice little take on the Jedi. Yes... it was the beginning of the end.

And welcome to the boards! wink

Thank you. I like this place. It's a little big...but I get way more responses and suggestions this way than I would get on other boards that I visit. And thanks for the comments, everyone.
