March – A Vignette
A loud rumbling could be heard from afar. Master Coleman Kcaj, the Ongree Jedi Master, looked out of the window in the Council Chambers. There, he saw hundreds, if not thousands, of Clone Troopers marching forth. Leading them was an unidentifiable man cloaked in dark brown robes. What were they doing? Who was that man?
Then he felt it again. Just moments ago, he had felt a dramatic shift in the Force; it felt as though the Force had been dipped in a sea of darkness. Just now, he felt lives being destroyed, lives of the Jedi within that very Temple. It hit him then: the Clones had turned.
Coleman ran out of the Council Chambers and looked over the ledge. What he saw was as horrific a site as he had ever seen. Laser bolts flashed back and forth as they careened off of lightsabers, walls, Jedi bodies, and clone trooper armor. Bodies fell like rain in hurricane on Kamino. Fire lay on every level. Statues of ancient Jedi lay in pieces on the floor. The Jedi Order and Temple was being destroyed.
Master Kcaj could only think of one thing: the younglings.
The Ongree Jedi ran down the stairs, coming across a small squad of clones on the way. The squad fired rapidly at Coleman, whose lightsaber shot to his hand at the first site of them. With his skill in the Force, he deflected all the bolts that came at him. After a few short moments, the squad of troopers laid on the floor, dead. The Jedi Master continued onward.
Coleman dropped a few more levels, deflecting blaster fire that was directed at him, and slashing bodies that got in his way. Finally, he had reached the Younglings quarters.
“Master! What’s going on?” one of the Younglings said.
“There is an attack on the Temple!” Coleman said, “You must follow me!” He rushed out of the room, and made sure all of the younglings were following. He lead them back the way he had come: up a few levels and to the Jedi Council chambers. The Younglings all had looks of fright and confusion on their faces.
Coleman looked over his shoulder to see if there were any Younglings straggling behind as he neared their destination. What he saw frightened him more than anything in his life: the man who had lead the Clone Troopers into the Temple was walking towards them. Luckily, a Jedi Padawan lunged in front of him, and gave Coleman a little more time to get the Younglings to the Council Chambers.
Once they arrived, Master Kcaj forced all the Youngling inside. He looked back just in time to see the mysterious man slice through the Jedi Padawan with a very elegant wave of his saber. He turned to the Younglings. “I want all of you to stay here,” he said in a frantic tone. “I am going to lock the door. Do not open this door unless you know it is a Jedi! Do you understand?” They all nodded their heads in unison, their terror growing.
Coleman gave a nod to them all. “May the Force be with you,” he said. Before the children could respond, the Council door shut and locked.
******
Lord Vader marched forward, walking after the Younglings and the Jedi Master who was accompanying them. He had one mission in mind: kill everyone within the Jedi Temple. That included the Younglings; at least he had assumed as much. They were, in fact, the future of the Jedi Order, they were a vital part in the execution of the Jedi Order, even if they were not fully apart of the Jedi’s elaborate plot to overthrow the Republic.
He watched as Master Coleman Kcaj, a member of the Jedi Council who sat in the room with him just days before, rushed forward toward the Council Chambers. Obviously he understood the importance of the Younglings.
The fallen Jedi was within meters of the Jedi Master and the children when he was attacked by Rane Shaal, a Jedi Padawan. The Jedi attacked with a dark blue energy blade, and made precise motions with her blade. Unfortunately, Darth Vader was too much of a match for the Padawan, and he drove her backwards to the side of the ledge. The Padawan displayed no fear, and continued to attack. Vader smiled at her attempt: she had heart, and determination, he admired that. She was a Jedi, though, and she must die. With a parry and a few accurate slashes, the padawan fell to the ground in a pile of body parts.
Vader looked upon her, and smiled. What a sight it was to see a Jedi dead at his feet. She was one of the first. Certainly, she would not be the last. Vader continued onwards after Jedi Master Coleman Kcaj.
******
Coleman Kcaj turned around just after locking the Council doors. That’s when he saw just who the mysterious man who had led the Clones into the Temple was. It was the newest member of the Jedi Council, the Chosen One, Anakin Skywalker.
“Anakin?” he asked, “What are you doing?” He looked at him with a look of shock, his lightsaber in hand, “Why are you doing this?”
”I have learned of your plot,” Vader replied, “I am here to foil it.” He ignited his own saber, the blue energy blade spewing forth out of the hilt. The color of the blade did not suggest of Anakin being a Sith, but his appearance, his tone, his radiance did.
“Plot? What plot?” he asked in astonishment but he did not receive an answer. Lord Vader merely lunged at him, attacking with a downward strike. The Jedi brought his blade up to block, and was shocked at the outstanding power in which the former Jedi Knight attacked. Vader then attacked with a feint attack to the left and a slice to the Jedi’s leg. Coleman was lured into the feint, but lunged to keep his leg from being amputated.
Vader pressed forward again. His attacks were relentless; lightning fast and as powerful as a strike from Master Yoda. Coleman then saw a flaw in Vader’s stance, and attempted to take advantage of it. He stabbed forward with his blade in the open spot in Vader’s offense. However, it was just trap and he walked right into it. He stumbled forward. Vader side-stepped to the right, and brought his blade down, beheading the Jedi Master. His head rolled down the stairs, and continued on rolling. It hit a crack in the floor, and rolled to the left, directly off the ledge. Vader watched as the head of the Jedi Master fell to the ground meters below. Vader smiled, and turned to the Council Chambers.
******
Vader entered the Council Chambers, his lightsaber in hand and his hood over his face.
The look on the Younglings faces, to his surprise, was that of relief. They all had a hint of confusion, though; confusion about what was happening, confusion about what they were feeling. Obviously they could feel the pure dark side energy radiating off of Anakin, but he was a Council Member. He couldn’t be evil.
“Master Skywalker,” said a boy who stepped forward, “There are too many of them. What are we going to do?”
Vader peered at him, his eyes full of hatred. He almost felt bad for what he was going to do, but, he knew that if the Jedi hadn’t included the younger Jedi in their plot, they soon would.
The fallen Jedi ignited his saber.
Each and every single youngling in the room flinched, especially that of the brave boy who asked what they should do. What was he doing? Was there a threat they were unaware of in the room? Then, he attacked.
*****
Cin Dralligs heart dropped in his chest. He was currently blocking laser bolts of the fifteen or so Clone troopers who were aiming at him. His mind was not on that. He could feel it still going on. The dark man, who he had come to learn was Anakin Skywalker, was killing the Younglings. He could not stand for that.
Lunging high over the troopers in front of him, Cin began his ascent to the top of the spire, to the Council Chambers. He wasted no time, and used the Force to speed his run. Along the way, he had passed many clone troopers, each of whom tried to kill the speedy Jedi Master. But to no avail. The laser bolts were not fast enough to intercept the Jedi Master.
After a few moments, Cin was at the top of the tower, and entering the Council Chambers. When he entered, he saw Anakin deactivate his blade as the last body fell to the floor. He looked in horror at the site: children from the ages of three to thirteen were sprawled on the floor dead. A tear came to his eye. He had instructed all of these kids in the very basic of lightsaber technique, and now...they were gone.
Vader turned around; a smile appeared across his face, “Master Drallig, I have been awaiting you. I was hoping none of the Clone Troopers killed you; I wanted to do it myself.” He ignited his saber once more.
“Anakin! What have you done?” he screamed, “They were children! What harm could they bring to you?”
Vader scowled, “Why does everyone keep calling me Anakin? Haven’t they realized? I am not Anakin anymore. I am Darth Vader.” With that, he lunged at the master swordsman, attacking with blazing speed. Cin Drallig was taken aback by the awesome force in which Vader attacked. Obviously, with the aid of the Dark Side, he had grown more powerful than Cin could have imagined.
Master Drallig, however, was not the master swordsman, and lightsaber technique teacher, that he was for nothing. Pulling out his other saber, he began to gain the offensive, but just barely. Attacks were traded: high attack by Vader, parry and low attack by Cin. Back and forth they went.
The duel lasted for what seemed like hours. Cin began to show fatigue, but Vader seemed to be as energized as ever. This was, ultimately, the cause of the Jedi Master’s fall.
Vader pushed forward, sensing the fatigue in the Jedi Master. His attacks grew more fierce; faster. Soon, his blade was a swirling blade of light; or, a more necessary term was a swirling blade of death. Cin Drallig, with his two lightsabers, was not able to withstand the awesome technique in which the fallen Jedi was using.
Darth Vader found a fault in his opponents’ defense, and exploited it. He flicked his blade so fast, the Jedi master could not possibly block it, and, as a result lost his left hand. Screaming in pain, he backed up. Vader followed, still swinging his blade with precise jabs and slashes. The pain was too much for him to bear, and he lost control. Vader sliced downwards on his other arm, making him defenseless. The Jedi fell to his knees.
“Master Drallig, I thought you would have been better,” Vader said, bringing his blade up past his right shoulder. He smiled wickedly, this stance bringing back the ever-so-vivid memory of him killing Dooku on the Separatist flagship, “Now, you will die, along with the Jedi Order.”
Those words were the last words that the Jedi Master ever heard, as Vader’s blue-white blade came across the Jedi from shoulder to shoulder, decapitating him. The final Jedi Master within the temple was now dead.
******
Lord Vader exited the council chambers, and looked on as bodies lay all around him: bodies of Jedi, bodies of troopers, and even bodies of citizens who had come to see what the commotion was about. An evil smile appeared across his face. As he felt the last life pass through the wall of life, he knew he had completed his mission. Now, he had the power. He had obtained the power to save Padmé from her certain death.
******
From afar, it looked as though a bomb had exploded within the Jedi Temple: smoke spewed from every single spire of the Temple like smoke from a death stick. Though, no one could have guessed the absolute chaos that had gone in inside that once beautiful building. No one could have guessed that the “Hero with no fear”, the hero of the Clone Wars, the Chosen One would have been the cause of so much death and destruction. And, they would never know. The massacre would be covered, and no one would ever know the truth; the truth about how the Jedi Order truly came to an end.

I liked it. I also like how you mentioned Anakin's nick-name near the end: the Hero with no Fear. Very intense, and the capture of emotion, and atmosphere, was dead on. Well done.

I really liked how you mirrored Palpatines opera scene comment here. Good job showing this intense and emotional scene from other characters povs.

Wow! That was incredibly well written and heart breaking,
darth_nemisis
!
I like how you went between different Jedi - masters, padawans, and younglings alike - to tell the true and tragic story of the Temple purge.
As he felt the last life pass through the wall of life, he knew he had completed his mission. Now, he had the power. He had obtained the power to save Padmé from her certain death.
In my opinion, the most powerful line in the whole story. To see through the eyes of the Jedi, to hear their last moments, to witness the tragedy, and then to know that though Vader experienced it all too, his only thought amidst the carnage was of life. How twisted his mind had become...

So sad...one of the things I find hardest to get to grips with in the movie is the murder of the younglings.
You wrote Anakin/Vader wonderfully.
