A nod signaled his understanding. "You can call me Boomer," he intoned with a more upbeat tone to his voice. "All my friends do."
Once more was that brow raised. "Why do they call you 'Boomer'?" the Jedi asked. Somehow, he wasn't quite too sure he actually wanted to know.
"Thinks have a tendency of blowing up when I'm around," Anakin replied, smiling sheepishly. "Figuratively and literally."
I loved that, hmm, maybe I will start calling Anakin ‘Boomer’ form now on.
Why do I have a bad feeling about all of this …well, as usual I’m ahead of myself .
Well, I’m gona need a new update soon . This was an excellent update .

And thus comes the first part of Chapter 9, where we're on our way with the Jedi to Coruscant! Yay, much goodness and some Anakin/Obi-Wan interation ^^ I'm gonn'a try and get this chapter done in the next few days, since I'm gonn'a be out of town and unable to write over the weekend. If any of my readers attend Anime Oasis in Idaho, I'll see you there. ^^
===========================
Chapter 9
Returns
===========================
The city of Theed was covered in the darkness of night. It was exceedingly silent, more than was normally to be experienced by those preparing to sleep. In the ornately decorated throne room that served as the audience place for Regent Amidala, a strange collection of beings had gathered. The Federation Viceroy Nute Gunray have assembled those present, which consisted of Rune Haako and several other Neimoidians, Governor Sio Bibble, as well as a vast array of armed battle droids to keep the human in line.
Gunray was seated in a chair mounted upon a robotic walker that bore him from one part of the room to another, metal legs responding to a simple touch of his fingers on the controls in the armrest. It carried him as Sio Bibble stared defiantly toward the Neimoidians, jointed limbs working in precise motions to allow him comfort while he gave the human a dreary and bored expression. The governor had so far proven to be a source of irritation.
"When are you going to give up this futile action?" he asked in a drawl tone that signaled his lack of patience with the problem that Bibble was causing. "Your Regent is lost, and your people are starving."
Bibble stiffened, though it was out of anger and not fear. "The Naboo will not be intimidated, Viceroy, not even at the cost of innocent lives-"
"I would be more concerned about myself if I were, Governor," Gunray snapped in an annoyed tone of voice, cutting the human off sharply. "In all likelihood, you are going to die much sooner than your people."
"This invasion will gain you nothing!" The human continued to glare at the Neimoidian, not showing an ounce of fear in his eyes. It was truly a testament to his resolve and faith. "We of Naboo are a democracy, the people have decided!"
Gunray finally sighed and waved his hands to the battle droids. "Take him away," he ordered. On command, the droids quickly surrounded Sio Bibble and led him away down a hallway. Gunray watched after them for a moment, then turned his attention to one of the droid commanders approached. "What is it?"
"Sir, Lord Sidious is requesting that you contact him immediately," the droid replied without hesitation. "He says that it's a very important matter."
For a moment, the Neimoidian almost paled. He looked to Rune Haako, then nodded to the droid and dismounted the mechno-chair. With Haako filing behind him, Gunray hurried to the mobile communication projector and tapped the transmission acknowledgement. "My lord, this is unexpected, but not unwelcome."
The cloaked figure of the Sith Lord moved slightly. "Our plans are moving faster than anticipated," came the reply from Sidious, his voice as raspy and cracked by sinister intent as ever. "The Commerce Guilds have agreed to join the Coalition. The Khommite have completed their task, and our forces are ready." There was almost a crack of a smile on the Dark Lord's lips. Something must have very much pleased him in the sudden turn of events. "The time for this facade is over, Viceroy. The Separatist Coalition has spoken, and the Republic shall face the power of an army unlike any they have seen before."
There was a choking sound from the back of Gunray's throat. He had known of the systems that planned to secede from the Republic, almost a thousand strong with those worlds that had grown dissatisfied with the senate. The last time there had been an attempt to break away, however, the Separatist Coalition had been met by the Republic Defense Forces, in what was now called the Stark Hyperspace War. That had been ten years ago, and while the Coalition survived, it had lacked the military power to make true on its intentions to secede.
But that had not been the end of their ambitions. Secretly, they had been rebuilding their forces, using all resources possible to construct a hidden droid army, and something else which even Gunray knew little of. A clandestine project on some outpost called Wayland, as Sidious called it, something that would, so he claimed, shatter the foundations of the Republic. All Gunray knew was that it involved some bounty hunter whose name he couldn't remember. An Echani, if he remembered right, rivals and equals to the famed Mandalorians.
It was after he caught his breath that Gunray realized what Sidious was giving the order for. All pretenses of loyalty to the Republic were no longer needed, as the long awaited strike against the Republic was about to begin. The hidden armies would be unleashed, it would be only a matter of time before the Coalition forces amassed at Naboo. More so, the secret project that Sidious promised to make them unbeatable was ready.
"We are prepared, my lord," the Neimoidian finally stated, bowing his head low. "Our droids armies shall be ready for the battle should it come." He paused for a moment as a thought came to his mind. "Might I ask, Lord Sidious, what the status of Regent Amidala is?"
The holographic projection seemed to emanate distaste for the inquiry, as if the very thought of asking for information from the Sith Lord was a grave sin. "Lord Maul has appraised me of their position. That, Viceroy, is all that you need to be informed of."
The image dissipated, leaving Nute Gunray to stand there with mouth agape as he realized in his head what Sidious had actually just said. The regent was on her way to Coruscant, the Sith's apprentice had failed to capture her, and he was to not question the inner workings of the Sith Lords.
But now, whatever the regent did with the senate was meaningless. A massive army would be awaiting whatever meager forces that the Republic would send, and the position of the Coalition would be uncontested. Perhaps there was something to be found that could be regarded as a victory in their tribulations.
******
As the silver Nubian craft streaked through hyperspace, Anakin Skywalker sat in a corner of the passenger berths, wrapped tightly in a set of blankets. His right arm had stopped spitting sparks after the removal of the severed mechno-arm's power cell, allowing him to merely worry about getting the bionic limb replaced once they reached Coruscant.
For some reason, he found it was hard to stay warm, like a perpetual chill had descended around him and would not be swayed. He couldn't sleep for long, as the intense dreams that had haunted him the night before the Boonta race continued to plague Anakin's mind. That terrible shadow once more appeared before him, wielding a red shaft of light as a weapon while it breathed ominously at him. The details had grown a bit clearer, but he still did not see the face of what was his enemy.
Padme slept in one of the small bunk-style beds, breathing softly with a tranquil expression on her face. It almost made the boy smile to just sit there and watch her, so peaceful at rest. It was what he wished he could have himself; a sense of inner peace that was disturbed by nothing. Such was impossible for him, however, especially after having encountered that horned figure on Tatooine. The horrible memories had begun to come back again, ever since he'd seen that face. It was probably what had caused these dreams to continue growing in intensity. Seeing the man who had murdered his father over a decade ago woke up all kinds of terrible anger that had been asleep all this time. It was not something that was easy to just put away again.
His eyes shifted to where Kei slept in another of the bunks. A part of Anakin regretted having become involved with Kei's life. Now she had been dragged away from her home because of that monster, all because of her association with him. If he hadn't been in her life, she wouldn't have come after them to say good-bye, and she wouldn't have been caught up in that battle. The greater part of him said that it was not his fault, yet Anakin could not help but blame himself.
The boy shifted slightly. His right arm was itching, and unfortunately, he couldn't do much about it because the source of the itch was the fact that he had no feeling from the upper part of his forearm down. "Slagging freak," he muttered under his breath. "You just had to ruin my life again, didn't you?"
There was motion from the main corridor. Anakin quickly curled up and pretended to be asleep, hoping that he would be left alone. For a moment, it seemed as if the intruder would leave him be. But then he felt something touch his mind, and the boy knew that he had been found out.
"Can't sleep?"
Upon sitting up and turning, Anakin found that it was Obi-Wan who stood there looking at him. He nodded, knowing that there had been no point in trying to fool a Jedi. "I still can't get over what happened," he said softly, now getting to his feet and walking over to join the young Jedi Knight. With his right arm slipping out from under the blankets, Anakin gave a sigh. The burnt ends of wire and the skeletal structure of his severed mechno-arm was all too evident as proof of his foolishness. "I was an idiot to do that, I could have gotten killed."
There was a nod from Kenobi, but he didn't reprimand the boy. It showed true character to acknowledge one's mistakes. It showed even more character that, in spite of being a mistake, it had been an incredibly selfless thing to do. "You wanted to help Master Jinn, I'd say that more than justifies your actions, Anakin." He smiled and patted Anakin on the shoulder, then gestured for him to take a seat while pulling a chair over for himself through the grasp of the Force. Now seated, the young Jedi rubbed his chin, eyes studying the boy closely. It was after this that he sighed and once more smiled. "I'm going to be honest," Obi-Wan began, a bit nervous in his tone of voice. "I wasn't too fond of you when I first saw how you look at Padme."
The boy didn't respond. Instead, he looked down at his feet, unsure if he should give a response or not. There wasn't much he could do to avoid the conversation, however, and on the bright side, Obi-Wan was trying to be friendly to him. "I kind'a noticed," came his whispered reply. His feet shuffled before he finally raised his eyes to look at the Jedi. "Look, I'm sorry. I didn't know about this whole Padawan thing that she can't have a boyfriend and all that, I shouldn't have-"
Anakin had to stop when he realized that Obi-Wan was giving him a most bemused expression, almost as if the Jedi wasn't at all worried about that matter. It was making him even more nervous now. His feet started to shuffle against each other while he scratched his left leg. "You're not acting like you're mad at me."
It took a few seconds for Obi-Wan to finally nod in reply. He was actually amused by Anakin's attempts to apologize, thinking that he had done something horribly wrong. Such a contrast in his own personality was the boy named Anakin Skywalker. He was very brash at times, touched by many of the typical adolescent arrogances, and yet he could be very humble when he felt that he had actually done something wrong. He was even more concerned about those in need of help rather than his own self-needs.
Maybe his original impressions of this young man had been premature. True, Anakin seemed to have become quite fond of Padme, and visa versa, but it was a friendship that would serve them both well. Certainly, Obi-Wan was starting to grow attached to this boy who had risked his life for them, not once, but twice. It was a very Jedi-like quality, and for a moment, he almost forgot that Anakin was much older than any student who had been accepted since the reformation of the Order. In his mind, he could see young Skywalker as a heroic Jedi Knight, traveling across the galaxy and protecting the values of the Republic. It was a grand thought, and it felt very real even as Kenobi imagined it.
It was after a moment that he realized he hadn't properly responded to Anakin's statement. "I'm not," Obi-Wan said calmly. He gestured with a nod of his head toward Padme. "To be honest, I'm actually happy for her to find such a valuable and caring friend, and I have to apologize for how I acted when we first met." He paused, then shrugged. "I understand well how hard it can be for one your age to ignore the feelings you can have for another, it's what makes us alive."
"So why is it not allowed for Padawans like Padme to let themselves enjoy those feelings?"
Ah, there was the problem. Anakin didn't yet understand fully. It would be best to explain it in full, then. "We're not forbidden from feeling our emotions," Obi-Wan quickly began, now scratching the side of his head as he was developing an itch. "The code that requires a Padawan to abstain from certain attachments is so that they can focus their attentions on their training. It's a rule of education which, as I'm sure she probably explained, is lifted once one become a Jedi Knight." There was a faint grin on Obi-Wan's face as he paused again. That expression indicated he had experience in such a situation. "What we are warned against is anger, fear, despair, jealousy, and such feelings which lead to the Dark Side. I think Master Yoda has said it best; fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, and hate leads to suffering."
The boy gave a faint nod. It was clear he didn't completely understand, but he understood enough to get the basics of what it all meant. If Qui-Gon somehow managed to convince the Council to allow this boy into the Order, he would understand better what it all was meant to say. The question then would be what Master would accept such a student of advanced age who had to be given, in essence, a crash course in order to bring him to the same level of learning and discipline as his would-be peers?
Yet, the sad reality was that he was too old. The Council would no doubt refuse such an idea; it went against centuries of tradition, of rules that had a reason for existing. Very rarely had any Jedi youngling been taken in by the Order after three years of age, the oldest having been five years old, and that youngling was now the Jedi Master who had discovered this boy. It was no wonder that Qui-Gon was championing the cause of returning the Skywalker name to the halls of the Jedi Order; he found something of a kindred spirit in Anakin.
Yes, the name Skywalker was no stranger to the Jedi. The man Anakin claimed had been his grandfather, Jacen Skywalker, had been a well-respected Jedi, with a loving wife and a cherished son. He wasn't exactly famous, but he was still known by those who studied the ones that came before. If Obi-Wan remembered correctly, Jacen had died out in the far reaches of the Wild Space regions, part of an exploration mission to map out the then uncharted areas of the galaxy. Jacen's lightsaber had been returned to his family, and that was the last the name Skywalker had been connected with the Order.
Which made it so odd as to why Anakin had been completely missed by the Jedi watchmen, whose duty was to feel for strong Force-sensitivity in young children. He had been born on the capitol of the Republic, how could they have missed someone with such an awesome presence in the Force? Anakin stood out like a bright beacon to one who could look into the flow of the Force itself, it was nearly impossible to miss that presence.
Or maybe, that was exactly why they had missed him. Certainly, no other human created such an echo in the fabric of the Force, it was a distortion that rivaled the Force presence of Master Yoda, possibly exceeded it in potential. The fact that he created a vergence around him would have thrown anyone off, for no human felt like this. The Force echo that Anakin possessed was so massive that any Jedi would assume that no living thing could be the source of it. It confirmed the old adage his own master had said on more than one occasion; there would always be something greater than what was measured as the greatest. Yoda himself was considered to be the most powerful living Jedi. Perhaps Anakin was something that was intended to exceed that.
"Do you think that the Order will accept me?" Anakin asked, his eyes almost shimmering as he asked the question.
Obi-Wan didn't answer, not immediately. The logic of the Order's code said that, no, the Council would say no, that Anakin was far too old to begin the training. That was the logic and the code of the Jedi he had grown up with. Yet, he was also a student of history, and knew well that there had been a time when someone Anakin's age might not be turned away. Obi-Wan had been trained as a Padawan by Yoda himself in some of the deepest traditions of the Order, but there was still that sense of compassion and understanding that his old master continued to cling to. It was what made him different from others of his rank. He held to traditions, and knew the exact reason for those traditions, as well as the times when exceptions had to be made.
After a long silence, Kenobi stirred. "I'm not sure, to be honest," he said softly. He fingered at his robe, knowing that uncertainty was something that could only dampen Anakin's spirit. "Some may understand your circumstances, some may not. It's hard to say at this point." He sighed, going silent again. It was then that Obi-Wan felt an idea form in his mind. Perhaps there was a way to help the boy. He couldn't tell Anakin now, but, when they spoke to the Council, then he would see. "But I wouldn't give up hope." Obi-Wan smiled at the boy. "Sometimes, all we have is hope."

I’ve been cheeking here almost ones every hour to see if you’ve updated, crazy I know , but I can’t help it, I love this story, hmm, maybe I’m addicted .
I really liked the Anakin/Obi- Wan conversation.
After a long silence, Kenobi stirred. "I'm not sure, to be honest," he said softly. He fingered at his robe, knowing that uncertainty was something that could only damped Anakin's spirit. "Some may understand your circumstances, some may not. It's hard to say at this point." He sighed, going silent again. It was then that Obi-Wan felt an idea form in his mind. "Sometimes, all we have is hope."
Hmm, I wonder if Obi- Wan is planning on taking Anakin in himself. I mean, we can guess that he would eventually. I’m also curies, if Qui- Gon dies, who is going to train Padmé? Why do I have the feeling that Obi- Wan is going to do that as well, I mean, in ep. 4, when Obi- Wan says “Vader, who was a student of mine…” it always sounded like he had more then one apprentice , but maybe that is just me who thinks so .
Keep the updates coming , I’m craving for more and I hope that you have fun at the Anime Oasis. Thank you for the pm .

NOt that big an update and leaves us with a future part 3 to the chapter, but I figured that I may as well before heading out for AO tomorrow.
=============================================
Chapter 8 part 2
=============================================
The space around the planet of Coruscant was filled by the specks of light that represented various ships in orbit, arriving and departing the Republic Capitol. Bursting from hyperspace was the sleek silver Nubian transport of Regent Amidala, now continuing on the final leg of its journey to the planet city. From space, the planet was something that continued to surprise off-world travelers. Veterans of the space ways were still amazed by how different Coruscant appeared upon approach. Instead of the softer blue and white shades of other worlds, Coruscant glinted in the sunlight as if the entire world was one big mass of metal.
Such an impression was not wholly mistaken. The days when Coruscant had any natural view were long lost to the annals of history. For as long as anyone could remember, the planet was one giant city, building up upon the fallen foundations of structures long since gone. Oxygen regulators maintained the atmosphere and scrubbers, water gathered and stored in massive artificial aquifers. Native animals, such as birds, fish, and land-dwellers, as well as native plant life, could be found only in museums or in the climate-controlled indoor preserves. As one descended from the upper atmosphere toward the surface itself, the planet became a landscape of towering skyscrapers, the gleaming constructs stretching through the clouds like a forest of metal trees topped by needlepoints.
Looking out through a viewport on the regent's transport, Anakin Skywalker gave a soft sigh in relief. He'd been away from his homeworld for a full Tatooine year, which in fact equaled to nine months in Coruscanti standard time. It was still a long time to be away from home. No doubt, his uncle would be worried sick about him, even after having gotten the letter informing him that Anakin was stuck on Tatooine and trying to get the money to go home. The boy could already imagine the look on Crieg Marsh's face when he came home and told the man that he had won the Boonta Classic.
"It almost feels like my first time coming here," he mused, now turning to see that Padme was watching him silently. "I've been away so long, I almost forgot what Coruscant looks like."
The regent's ship was slowing down now, edging its way out of the traffic lanes toward an airborne landing platform that was nestled between a cluster of buildings, where a pair of shuttles waited. The ship landed with a soft bumb, docking clamps locking down. Regent Nemris waited at the entry hatch, turning to Qui-Gon, then nodded in consent for him to lead the procession to the platform surface.
With the hatch sliding open and the ramp extending down, the Jedi Master took the steps and walked out into the bright Coruscanti sunlight. Standing there, awaiting them, was a group of Republic guards and two men clad in the robes of senate office whom the Jedi and Amidala were familiar with. Anakin recognized one of them almost immediately, and although he didn't recognize the other, he none-the-less followed the Jedi's example and bowed politely.
Amidala gave a curt nod to the two men, now focusing her attention on the one most familiar to her. Senator Palpatine was not a tall man, but he was distinctive in appearance. Dressed in robes of blue and deep green, he bowed to the elected ruler of his home planet, then gestured to his companion. "Lady Amidala, may I present Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum."
Finis Valorum was a tall man with silver hair who appeared to be of an undertminate age, neither young no old, but something of both. His bearing was strong, but his face and blue eyes looked tired and worn. It was obvious that his years of service to the Republic had taken quite a toll on him.
"Lady Amidala," Valorum greeted, offering a bow to the regent. "I've been hoping for the chance to meet you in person, though I wish it were under better circumstances." The Chancellor swept a hand toward one the shuttles, painted in blue to denote its status as Valorum's personal transport. "I've called for a meeting of the Republic Defense Force, General Dodonna will be there to discuss allocation of our military resources for dealing with this assault on Naboo."
There was most definitely a sense of confusion from Amidala. She found herself blinking and looking to Palpatine for an explanation. "The Defense Force? Chancellor, I came to have this unlawful blockade of my world ended, not to start a war."
For a moment, even Palpatine seemed surprised. It was then that he nodded in understanding and gestured for Amidala to join him. "Perhaps you should come with me first, milady. I can explain everything that has happened since you fled Naboo."
The regent looked back to the Jedi, most distressed now at this turn of events, then nodded to the senator and followed him to Valorum's shuttle. Qui-Gon and his quartette now approached Valorum, bowing to him before speaking. "I'm am myself unsure as to why the Defense Force is being called into this. Surely the Trade Federation would not have the audacity to commit to a war with the Republic itself."
There was worry in the chancellor's eyes. He looked to notice young Anakin, then indicated that they were best not speaking of the matter in such an unsecure location. "I'm unable to answer your questions right now, Master Jedi. You are welcome, however, to attend the meeting and give us a briefing on what happened to the negotiations. I'm sure, though, that the Jedi Council will be able to inform you more on what has happened."
The Jedi Master was taken aback. He caught himself and nodded, now leading his group toward the other shuttle while Valorum boarded the first and departed. Qui-Gon was silent as his companions sat down in the craft, unsure as to the development of these events that they had been witnessing. Something else was occurring behind the scenes, he could feel it. Perhaps Padme and Obi-Wan's assessments of something else that seemed elusive were true, and now they were seeing the results of it.
That would have to wait, however. Right now, they needed to give a report to the council on what had happened. More importantly, Qui-Gon needed to bring Anakin before the Council. If he was right, everything might rest on the outcome of this boy's future.
******
The brilliant blue blade flashed and crackled as it impacted against one of emerald green. The two Jedi combatants quickly moved about, lightsabers arcing through the air and crashing with a vibrant glare. One of them fighters, the one wielding the blade of sapphire, was a blonde woman little more than twenty years old. Her features were still very youthful, appearing to still be in her teens, and her blue eyes were a mark of her continuing adolescent vitality.
Her opponent, wielding the green blade, was a blue-skinned young adult female Twi'lek. Her eyes were more human in appearance than most others of her race, and she was dressed less traditionally than her fellow Jedi. She was clad in a skin-tight top and pants, separated at the mid-riff while there was a lack of a sleeve on her right side.
The shafts of light curved through the air, humming loudly between the crashing squeals of impacting plasmoid energy. Several of the younglings, a number of young Padawans, and a few of the younger Knights had gathered to watch the impressive sparring match between two incredibly close friends.
The display of refined skill continued on, the two Jedi Knights moving about in the large sparring room and causing their audience to quickly clear the way for them. Minutes later, they finally came to a final clash of blades and separated with a few meters now between then. The human breathed heavily, allowed her saber to shut down, and smiled to her long time Twi'lek friend as the other Jedi did the same. "Still giving me a run for my credits, Aalya."
"Master Vos would be very disappointed if I didn't." The Twi'lek flashed a grin while attaching her lightsaber to the clip on her belt. She shifted her gaze, looking behind the human before giving a faint chuckle. "Maybe I should leave you two alone, Siri."
The human Jedi named Siri Tachi looked to Aayla with an expression that said she didn't understand. The moment she felt that presence, however, the young woman bit her lip in attempt to keep from smiling. Aayla only gave a wink before encouraging the younglings and the Padawans to leave before departing herself. Once the room was empty save for the two of them, Siri finally let herself smile. "I was wondering when you'd be getting back, Ben."
A chuckle came from the young man standing behind her. "Ever since that mission on Andara five years ago, you haven't stopped calling me that," came the reply from Obi-Wan Kenobi. He gave a bow to the female Jedi, and while the motion itself was a mere sign of greeting, there was something in his eyes when he looked at Siri that said more. "One would think you've got a fondness for calling me by that name if they didn't know better."
The young woman gave an amused snort and gave Obi-Wan a nudge through the Force, letting him know just how true those words were. "I was actually worried about you," Siri stated as she walked over to stand next to Kenobi. "Very worried, Obi."
"Siri, you know that we agreed not to-"
She held up her hand to silence him. "Don't give me any run-arounds about the Code." Siri quickly thumped Obi-Wan on the head, giving him a lopsided grin now that he was starting to look a bit annoyed. "We both know that neither of us has been very good about following that particular tenet." With a turn upon her heel, Siri headed for the doors, with Obi-Wan close behind her. She could sense his relief at seeing her again, a feeling she well shared in regards to his safe return. "So, I take it that the negotiations went pretty badly, considering that the Defense Forces council is being called to a meeting about this Separatist insurrection."
There was confusion on Obi-Wan's face. Siri found herself surprised by it. How could Kenobi not know? He had been there at Naboo, after all, where the entire situation was getting ready to explode. "You were there, you should know about it first hand."
"It was still just the Federation Blockade when we left the planet," Obi-Wan replied. He couldn't understand what was going on, because no one had informed him of what else had occurred. "Siri, what's happened?"
The young woman frowned, now leading the way toward the nearest lift platform. "Have you given your report to the Council?" she asked as they boarded. When Obi-Wan shook his head, Siri almost swore aloud. "That explains why you don't know the rest of the story then."
"I was stopping to see you before Master Jinn and I gave our reports to the council," Kenobi replied quickly. The lift paused in mid-travel, then making the proper adjustments, continued upward into the Council Spire toward the large dome that topped the center tower of the Jedi Temple. "We were given time to prepare ourselves, so I thought I should come see you first and let you know that I was all right."
Siri couldn't help but smile at Obi-Wan's words. Her certainly stuck to the promise he had made those long five years ago. "You never change," she muttered just before the lift stopped at the top of the spire and opened. Both Jedi exited, now looking down into the hall that led directing into the Council chambers. "Come see me when you're done. We need to talk."
He wasn't sure what to say. Instead of words, Obi-Wan replied with a bow and continued on his way into the Council chambers. Qui-Gon and Padme were already there, as were the twelve members of the Jedi Council. It seemed that they had all been waiting for him. Obi-Wan made a mental note not to dally on personal matters when his presence was required elsewhere.

And thus the wrap up for chapter 9. Expect chapter 10 this next week. ^^
======================
Chapter 9 part 3
======================
"Forgive my tardiness," he quickly apologized, bowing to the assembled Masters. "I have no excuse."
From his seat near directly left of the central chair in which Yoda sat, Mace Windu merely nodded. "No apology required, Kenobi, we haven't even started yet." He glanced to Dooku, who sat across on the west side of the room next to an Ongree Master, Coleman Kcaj. "Master Dooku, if you would first inform them of the situation that has arisen?"
A sharp nod from the aged human. "From what we are able to tell," Dooku began, his eyes on Qui-Gon, "the Separatist Coalition has decided to once more attempt secession from the Republic. We received word of a group of battleships heading for Naboo from a science outpost just outside of Bestine." He paused for a moment, as if his silence was weighing the severity of this information. "It appears that this blockade by the Trade Federation is merely the first part of an attack on the Republic from the Commerce Guilds."
His gaze turned toward Yoda, as if he was unsure how to proceed. Dooku was thus silent. Mace Windu was the one who brought attention on the trio of Jedi who stood at the center of the circle. His dark eyes were slightly narrowed, but not in aggression. "Master Jinn," he stated. "If you would give your report on what happened at Naboo?"
After taking a breath, Qui-Gon dove into the details of what occurred aboard the Federation ship, continuing from there into the events that led up to Tatooine. He hesitated when it came to the details of the race and how they had obtained the parts, carefully leaving out mention thus far of Anakin and the fact that he was human. With a glance to Obi-Wan and Padme, the Jedi Master of the trio launched into the battle between himself and the black clad assassin. Dooku was visibly leaning forward with interest during that portion of the debriefing, his eyes slanting.
"This assailant was well trained in the Jedi battle arts," Qui-Gon finished, looking around to note the reactions of the Council Masters. "I can only conclude then that it was a Sith Lord."
There was an unsettling silence. Glances were exchanged and murmurs of disbelief quickly moved about the members of the Council. Mace was the first to end the whispers with a quickly piercing stare before he returned his attention to the trio before them.
"A Sith Lord?" he repeated in question. It was a difficult idea to accept.
Someone else saved him the trouble of voicing that difficulty "Impossible," was the statement of Ki-Adi-Mundi, who sat to the right or Yoda, his elongated head tilting toward the diminutive Grand Master of the Order. There was no attempt to hide the dismay in his voice. "The Sith have been extinct for a millennium."
In his tiny chair, Yoda shifted his posture. He was thinking hard on the matter, such was clear to anyone who looked at him. There was no doubt that he was not so sure as Master Ki-Adi-Mundi in those words. "In grave danger the Republic is, if returned the Sith have," he whispered at last, raising his gaze not to Qui-Gon, but to Obi-Wan. They all knew what it indeed meant if the Sith had not been wiped out like they'd assumed. "Hard to see, the Dark Side is, if foresee the return of the Sith we did not." A pause before turning his gaze to Dooku. "Discover the identity of this assassin, we must."
"Perhaps he will make another attempt on the Regent's life," Dooku offered. He looked to Qui-Gon, his eyes filled with expectation and pride for his former student. "Since he failed once, he no doubt will try again. I suggest that Master Jinn remain with Regent Amidala, to catch this possible Sith Lord should he appear again."
The little green Jedi Master nodded in concurment. "Agree with your assessment, I do, Master Dooku." His eyes shifted toward the trio who stood before them. There was something else that remained unsaid by both Jinn and Kenobi. "More to say, have you Master Jinn? Or perhaps, something to add, my old Padawan has."
Padme was now the one looking between both her teacher and her friend, not understanding. Suddenly, it hit her just what these two were concerned about. She almost opened her mouth, but remained quite. She had too much of a personal view in this matter, if she was correct.
"While we were detained on Tatooine, I discovered a vergence in the Force," Qui-Gon began. He noted the confused expressions on the faces of his peers, then readied himself. "Obi-Wan has felt it as well, we both concur in this matter."
It was Mace Windu who spoke first, leaning forward and narrowing his eyes. "This vergence was located around a...person?" he questioned, unable to believe it himself. Vergences were something that a great event or object with a connection to the Force created, not living things.
Kenobi nodded his head, now speaking to continue the report. "He's the boy who helped us obtain the engine replacement parts we needed. When I looked into the Force with my own senses, I could see massive distortions surrounding him, unlike anything I've ever seen before, and the midi-chlorian test that I ran myself could not even register the incredibly high concentration in his cells." He paused, unsure if the comparison he'd been considering was the proper one. It was, however, the only analogy he had. "The only thing I could possible think of to compare it with...is the Jedi Knight Revan."
Now there were audible whispers of disbelief and shock rippling through the Council. Masters conferred with one another, unable to believe what this young Knight had just said, had even thought of saying. While a point had to be made, some of the Council felt that it was in bad taste to mention the name of a Jedi who was seen in a light that many would consider strenuous at best. Even if it had been thousands of years ago, Revan was a man who was considered by many to be one not spoken of unless there was a very good reason.
It took a few moments, but Yoda at last caused the commotion to end. He furled his brow, looking at Obi-Wan intently. There was more which caused this response than just the mention of Reven. Long ago, before the Sith had ever come into being, so old that its true origins had been lost, a prophecy had been foretold. It stated that one day, in a time of greatest despair, that a chosen one would appear; a being strong in the Force, destined to alter not just its course, but the fate of the galaxy itself.
"Refer to the prophecy, you do," the wizened Master whispered. His ears twitched slightly as he rose to his feet, bringing the small cane that lay at his side about to aid him. "Of one who will bring balance in the Force, it does speak. Believe it to be this boy, do you?"
Qui-Gon was the first to respond. "I would not presume to ignore your authority in this matter and declare it as fact," he said calmly. His eyes said otherwise, however, and Yoda could see it. "But I must admit, I find myself believing it to be possible. I request that the boy be tested."
Again, there was silence as the Council Masters exchanged glances with each other, communicating concerns without words. Eyes shifted back to Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon once more.
"To be trained as a Jedi, you wish for him?" was the question that Yoda posed to the Jedi Master. Despite what some might have assumed of his tone, the ancient little Master was not at all irate about the request. Tugging at the corner of his lips was a faint smile. He took another few steps toward the humans at the center of the circle.
"I believe that finding him was the will of the Force," Jinn replied in honesty. "It was no coincidence that we discovered him, he has abilities that no human, including those Jedi trained, are capable of. Too much is happening for our encounter to have been mere chance."
As Yoda turned to meet his eyes, Mace Windu gave a sigh. He knew the ancient Jedi Grand Master well; like Obi-Wan and Dooku, he had been Padawan to the tiny green alien. Even while rooting himself with the ancient traditions of the Order, Yoda always found that traditions at times encouraged a more open view. This was one of those times.
"Bring him before us," the Korun Master at last said, his shoulders slumping. "We shall test him."

Sorry it's taking longer than normal, but it seems that after this many chapters, writer's block finally hit. That and post-convention illness has set in. Bleh. Anyway, I'm working on Chapter 10, and let me promise you all now, Valorum will NOT go out with a whimper like some chump, to quote Mace himself. Let it be known as well that you will be getting a few Obi/Siri moments. I can't let "Boomer" be the only guy who barely hides bending the rules. ~_o

Finally, and update for you all. ^^ Sorry it took so long, but this flu has been beating the snot out of me, and is finally now dying off. That and I gave the writer's block a good thwacking. And so, onto part 1 Chapter 10.
==============================
Chapter 10
Trials
==============================
Walking through the halls of the senate arena, Regent Amidala listened intently while the senator explained what had occurred since she and her entourage fled from Naboo. It seemed that the Commerce Guilds had allied with the Separatist Coalition, an organization which, ten years ago, had attempted a violent breakaway from the Republic and ended up causing the Stark Hyperspace War. Back then, the Separatists had not possessed the resources to continue their play for secession. Now, however, it seemed that with the Commerce Guilds backing them, they had the droid armies at their command, enabling them to make yet another attempt at bringing down the Republic.
And her world was thrust into it because of the greed of the Trade Federation. Reports were already coming in that the Separatist fleet was on its way to Naboo, a force twice the size of that they had controlled in the last conflict. The outcome was looking very grim indeed.
"The instant that he heard of the Separatist fleet, Chancellor Valorum brought an investigation on the representatives from the Federation." Palpatine paused in his words before he turned toward the regent. Since they had arrived, he had been updating Amidala on the situation and the reactions that had occurred in the capitol. "I must admit, considering the scandal he has been accused of, Chancellor Valorum surprised quite a few members of the senate with such a bold move."
Again, he paused, and there was what almost looked like disappointment in his eyes for a brief moment. It quickly vanished, however. "When Commander Rieekan returned with word that Senator Dod and the other representatives from the Federation had vanished from the capitol, there was no objection to the order for the Defense Force to mobilize." Palpatine gave a faint smile as he finally halted in front of a set of door panels, now turning to face the young regent. "Our situation, milady, has generated quite a bit of turmoil within the senate."
With her eyes glazing over, Amidala gave a sigh. She had not been expecting such a dangerous situation to erupt in the wake of her escape from the Federation blockade. This clearly had been planned in advance by the Separatists. Right from the beginning, the blockade of her world was nothing more than the opening action of something far larger. The question now was what the Republic intended to do about it.
The doors slid open, allowing the group to enter the office of the Supreme Chancellor. Inside, Valorum was speaking with two men that Amidala recognized as General Jan Dodonna, commander of the space fighter corps, and Senator Garm Bel Iblis of Corellia, former commander of the fleet ten years ago during the Hyperspace War.
"Ah, Lady Amidala," Senator Bel Iblis said in greeting. "So glad you could join us. Senator Palpatine, a pleasure to see you."
"Likewise," Palpatine return, giving the one-time admiral a curt bow.
With the introductions and greetings out of the way, everything went straight back to the business at hand. A holographic projector was generating the image of Naboo at the center of the table while secondary projectors created what was obviously meant to represent the Separatist fleet approaching the planet.
"We've been studying what intel we have on the Separatist movements," Dodonna began, using a blue colored light pointer to indicate the fleet's course. "Most of the ships are from the Commerce Guilds, manned by droids." He tapped a switch on the projection platform, causing a new set of ships to be generated. "It's this that worries me, however." The general gave a sigh and used his light pointer to indicate the specific design of the ships in question that were being tracked through the Kooriva system. "These ships are not part of the Commerce Guild forces."
It was clear that Amidala did not recognize the design of the ships. However, Typho did, and he decided to make it known he was knowledgeable. "Those are Khommite carriers," he stated, looking to Dodonna with concern. "What are the Khommites doing that far outside of the Deep Core systems?"
The general shook his head gravely. "We still don't know what their purpose here is. Hopefully, they're not involved at all in the Separatist attack, but we're not taking any chances. We'll be deploying the third fleet to deal with the Separatists, it should be more than enough to make them back off."
The Regent was silent. She had no reply to all this information. All she could do was stare in shock at the holographic projections that displayed what was happening back on Naboo. Something terrible was about to happen, she could feel it, and her world was about to be ground zero for a conflict that could carry on for years, possibly decades. It went against all the things she had ever learned. Yet there was no other choice, it seemed.
"We're projecting that the Separatist forces will be, perhaps, twenty capital ships, with about a thousand fighters. The third fleet will be more than enough to handle that."
"Then let us hope that the fighting is mainly restricted to space so that casualties on the planet are low."
While the senators and the chancellor continued to discuss the strategy with General Dodonna, Amidala remained silent. Most of what was not being said, she understood little of, save that Naboo was about to become a warzone. The imagery she could visualize now was terrible. It wasn't just her world; there hadn't been a full-scale conflict in the Republic since the Reformation a thousand years ago, when the Sith had been destroyed in the last war.
If there were ever a time that she wished the Jedi were present so that she could rely on their calm, now was it. The young regent hadn't been prepared for this when she was elected to office. Her people were of a pacifist culture, avoiding battles whenever possible. To be involved in the planning of a war was something she could not do. It was against everything she'd ever learned.
An aide walked over and whispered into General Dodonna's ear. After a moment, he nodded and thanked the young man before returning his gaze to the Chancellor and the Regent. "The third fleet has gathered and is awaiting fighters and ground troops to be loaded up. If you'll excuse me, I have a relief force to prepare."
As the general departed, Amidala found herself looking to Palpatine for advice, some kind of guidance in this time of crisis. His experience and knowledge was the only thing that gave her reassurance now, but even those, she felt, were not enough to calm her fears.
"I fear that we may be plunging the Republic into far more than just a battle to end this dispute," she whispered, more to herself than to anyone else in particular. That sinking feeling she had in the pit of her stomach only grew the long she tried to draw strength from Palpatine's presence. Amidala was no seer, but she knew that the future, because of this entire series of events, was going to be bleak. For some reason, she felt that Palpatine would be at the center of it all.
******
The day had passed quickly for Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, and sunset found them overlooking the city from a large balcony. Absent was Padme, whom Qui-Gon had sent with Anakin and Kei to get the boy's mechno-arm replaced and so that they could relay Anakin's returns to his uncle he'd mentioned, a Crieg Marsh. The trio would certainly be returning soon. The Council had agreed to allow Anakin a chance to recover himself before he was brought before them, and Qui-Gon had done a bit of talking to get the Temple to cover the replacement of the bionic limb prosthetic. It was the least they could do, he reasoned, to repay the boy for his actions.
Right now, the two Jedi waited for the return of the three teenagers. They had not said much to each other since their appearance before the council. Something was troubling Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon could sense it, and it didn't take much to figure out that it had to do with Anakin. Jinn sighed as he reflected on the boy. Was he being too forward in this matter? He hadn't thought it through completely, Qui-Gon realized that now. The boy would probably be deemed as far too old to begin training. Certainly, he'd learned an astounding number of things on his own, but no Master would take him on as a student. None, save himself, and he could not because he already had Padme as his Padawan. The girl was not near ready for the trials, there was no way he could assume a role as Anakin's mentor.
It was quite a tight spot he'd backed himself into by following his instincts. All this way, and it was about to end. But he would not let it end without a fight, Qui-Gon promised himself that much. He owed it to Anakin to do all that he could.
"Master Jinn, I've been thinking," Obi-Wan said softly as they stood by the railing of the balcony. He turned his head toward the older Jedi, then looking out upon the sunset. "Anakin is going to need a teacher who is willing to understand his situation and be able to adapt to it. Have you thought of anyone who might take him as their Padawan?"
The Master was silent. Few of his fellows came to mind as being those who would be able, let alone willing, to assume a role as teacher for young Skywalker. His own former mentor, Master Dooku, was one of those few. But somehow, Qui-Gon found it hard to imagine the aging human Jedi Master as keeping up with the youth and energy of a brash young fifteen-year-old boy.
After a long moment of silence, Qui-Gon shook his head. "I fear now that while he will pass the tests, no one will have the courage to defy tradition and take him on as a learner." He sighed, looking down at the land around the temple, noting that a set of three small figures were entering. No doubt, that would be Anakin and his companions, returning earlier than planned. "I let my hopes and my instincts get the better of me in this matter."
The younger Jedi did not agree, yet nor did he contest those words. He simply breathed in, closing his eyes and letting his mind drift away. He knew a solution to their problem, and as each moment passed by, Kenobi found it being the answer that felt right. Qui-Gon truly was starting to rub off on him if he was following his feelings more than he followed traditions. "He will be a Jedi," the young Knight said calm and sure. "I promise you, Master Jinn. One way or another, the Skywalkers will return to the halls of the Order."
Uncertainty appeared on Qui-Gon's features. He didn't quite understand what it was that Obi-Wan meant, but perhaps, he didn't need to understand. The way of the Force itself was mysterious and elusive. Often times, it could not be understood, but was to be accepted as it was. Perhaps this was one of those motions, something that Qui-Gon was not meant to understand, but to know that things would follow as the Force willed it.
At last, he smiled, and set a comforting hand on Kenobi's shoulder. "You're a wise young man, Obi-Wan Kenobi," Jinn said with pride in his voice. "Yoda, no doubt, has much to be proud of." He paused for a moment. "You will be a legendary Master of the Order, I can already see it."
******
Even as they walked through the halls to the main liftshaft, Anakin was testing his new mechno-arm, flexing the servos and getting a feel for the new interface circuits which translated all his muscle reactions into data that controlled the motors of the prosthetic. It looked different from the skeletal model he'd had before. This new arm was more solid, with plates to cover all the wiring and frame structure. It seemed that Qui-Gon had been able to get the expenses covered by the Order in repayment for all that he'd done for them. Getting him home had been more than enough in Anakin's opinion, but he wasn't about to complain about the continued graces of the Order. It would have been very rude, after all.
"It looks a lot better than your old one, Boomer," Kei remarked as the trio of teenagers continued down the halls of the temple. Passage for her return to Tatooine had still not been arranged, and with the situation that was going on in light of the Separatist insurrection, it was likely that Kei would not be getting home for a while. "They even gave you cover plates this time!"
The boy nodded as they passed a group of younglings who looked at Anakin with puzzled looks on their faces. "All the new wiring and neuro-interfacing makes it feel like almost it's a real arm too. I can't believe all the new things they can do in only a few years since I got my old one." He neglected to mention that he'd not been able to get such a high quality limb replacement on what little money he'd had the last time. Anakin had to admit, the expenses being handled by the Jedi had gotten him a jump ahead in terms of the kind of bionic arm he could afford. Because of Padme, he'd been able to get a mechno-arm that probably would have sucked up most of the money he'd gotten from Watto in order to pay for. He still wasn't sure how he was going to thank Qui-Gon for all that they had done for him.
As they headed for the central lift, an elderly looking human woman walked over, stopping them as she gave a curt nod to Padme. "Learner Naberrie, I take it that this is young Mister Skywalker."
The young Padawan quickly bowed to the woman and nodded. "It is, Madame Nu. We're on our way to the Council chamber right now."
The woman frowned tightly as she looked the boy over. Anakin suddenly felt very conscious of himself, pulling the sleeve of his new jacket down around his right arm to hide the majority of the mechanical limb. He obviously didn't look much like a potential Jedi learner, even he knew that. From how Padme spoke to this woman with so much respect afforded her, it would prove wise not to argue a point of appearances.
For a moment, Madame Jocasta Nu continued to scrutinize him, take in every detail. At last, she gave an approving nod. "The Council has just reconvened to address your matter, young Skywalker. You may proceed with Learner Naberrie. Your friend may wait for here, or she may join me in the Archive Halls."
It was there that he readied to argue, but Kei stopped him by giving a swift nod and stepping out to follow the elder woman. "I'll be fine," she quickly said, giving the boy a glare that explained more than words that he was not to start a fight. With that, she followed Jocasta Nu to another lift while Padme led Anakin to the central shaft. He was nervous, anyone could see that without needing the Force.
"You'll be fine," Padme remarked as they waited for the lift to arrive. "Just remember to say calm and feel the Force, don't think about it." She took the chance to straighten the collar of the boy's new jacket. He looked like he was missing the weight of his blaster strapped to his waist and leg, though he had been allowed to keep his grandfather's lightsaber attached to his belt. "And above all else-"
"Don't panic," he finished. He gave Padme a lop-sided grin that said he knew all this already, but she could see just how scared he was. She also knew that he would never admit to it in a million years. "I best get up there and throw myself into the gundark's nest."
Unable to keep from laughing, Padme turned the boy around and pushed him into the now arrived lift. She keyed the top floor, now waiting as the platform rose up through the tower shaft. Part of her was worried for Anakin, being that the Council would no doubt be very critical of him, try to find some flaw that would exclude him from eligibility for training. His age was going to be the biggest hurdle to pass in this trial.
"I should have taken the time to get something else to wear," she heard the boy mutter. He was fidgeting again, revealing just how nervous he was. "Never looks good when you walk into a bunch of high-class people looking like you just came off the swoop-track."
After watching him try to make himself look more presentable, Padme sighed and reached over to pull him closer. "You're just making yourself look worse," she said while tucking his shirt in and straightening his jacket again. It wasn't much, but it was all they could do at this point.
Finally, the lift came to a stop, opening to reveal the long hallway that led to the council chambers. Padme found herself nervously shivering as they walked down the hall toward the room, ignoring the looks they had garnered from a few straggling Padawans and younglings. She could hear a few whispers; who was this boy, why was he wearing a lightsaber when he obviously wasn't a Jedi? That would change soon enough if things worked out right.
The hamber doors slid open as then approached, revealing the circle of Masters that sat there waiting for the pair. The teenagers came to a halt at the center of the circle, standing on the mosaic pattern of the floor. After a moment, Padme gave a bow to the assembled Master. "May I present Anakin Skywalker, Masters."
Mace Windu gave a faint nod. He studied the boy, noting every visible detail. After several seconds, his eyes caught sight of the silver lightsaber that hung at the boy's belt. "You may wait outside, Padawan."
She hesitated. Padme glanced aside to meet Anakin's eyes and could see the fear there at being here to face these twelve alone. The girl sighed and shook her head, then bowed once more and turned to leave. She paused as she passed Anakin. "Good luck," she whispered, then stepped out the doors, now gone after the panels had shut behind her.
Anakin gulped as he looked at the twelve Jedi Masters that sat in a circle around him. He could feel their probing stares, knowing that they were studying him intently, observing everything he did. What to say right now, he wasn't sure, and it didn't help that his heart felt like it was racing along at high speed. "I...uh..."
"Do you know why it is that you have been brought before us?"
At least it saved him from making the first overture. The Masters seemed rather to the point though, not even bothering with any preliminary introductions or anything to make him more comfortable. "Master Jinn feels that I might have a place here in the Jedi Order," Anakin quickly replied. His voice was ready to crack, he knew it, and he did his best to hide it.
One of the Masters, a diminutive green little alien, slowly nodded in agreement. He pursed his lips for a moment, looking Anakin over. "Much faith does Master Qui-Gon have in you, as does his apprentice." He gave a soft smile as he shifted in his tiny seat. Anakin guessed that this had to be Yoda, whom Padme had mentioned several times as the most important member of the council to impress. "Tell us. Why to become a Jedi, do you wish?"
For a long moment, Anakin was silent. The wrong thing said could end this, and he'd never get a chance like this again to become a Jedi. It was something he had to consider carefully, find his real reasons. "I guess," the boy began slowly. "I guess, it's because of my grandfather."
One of the masters leaned forward. He was human, with a grey beard that resembled Qui-Gon's and well groomed short grey hair. "Your grandfather was a Jedi?" he inquired, now gesturing to the saber that hung at Anakin's belt. "I assume then that the lightsaber you carry belonged to him."
The boy nodded. There was no point in trying to admit to anything otherwise. "My grandfather was Jacen Skywalker, Obi-Wan seems to have heard of him."
There were whispers now among a few of the Council Masters. Anakin's eyes nervously went from one Jedi to the next, unsure of what this boded for him. Yoda seemed to be staying out of the talk, however, with eyes lazily half-open. There was a sense of friendship that Anakin could feel from the ancient little Jedi, a feeling he didn't feel from many of the others. The dark-skinned Jedi felt distrustful of him, wary to the point of concerned. It was a sense he felt from most of the Council.
One of the masters, an Ongree dressed in dulled brown robes, tilted his head toward Anakin after reading a datapad. There seemed to be some kind of gleam in his eyes, though due to the odd under-chin positioning of those eyes, it was hard to tell by looking at him. "Very high midi-chlorian count this boy has," the alien intoned curiously. He glanced to one of the human Masters, giving what some might have seen to be a smile.
There was a flash of warning in the look that Yoda gave that Master. It was made quickly clear that making such a point of this interview was not going to be tolerated. There was something else, Anakin could sense it. It had to do with these midi-chlorians the Ongree had mentioned, and Yoda most certainly did not like it being brought up.
=========================
Will get more up as soon as I get it written. Until then. Enjoy, peoples. I now go to gather stuff for the fic, and to work on my costume designs.

Part 2 of Chapter 10. Yayness. Now I just need to figure out how to start off Chapter 11...
===============================
Chapter 10 part 2
===============================
"To mention such matters, wise it is not, Master Kcaj," the little green Grand Master stated as his tone went cold. He returned his attention to Anakin, suddenly becoming that more familiar friendly figure as he got up from his seat and hobbled toward the boy with cane in hand. "Master Windu. His abilities, would you test?"
The Korun Master nodded, holding out a pair of orbs and instructing Anakin to levitate them. The boy quickly understood what this test was meant for, and not only accomplished the required task, but surprised the Council by calling the spheres to his own hand. He was tempted to start moving the orbs through the air, but knew that the Jedi would not look kindly upon him trying to show off. Instead, he cause them to move in basic directions to show his level of control, then returned them to Windu. It took almost all of his self-control to not start grinning like an idiot.
There was a stunned silence. Mace Windu glanced over to the master who had questioned Anakin about the lightsaber. "Your opinion, Master Dooku?"
The human master knit his brow, clearly in deep thought. It was unclear as to what exactly he was thinking, but there was no doubt that he had been struck by the ease at which Anakin had performed a task that required training to be capable for anyone else. "He is very skilled for one who has had no teacher in the ways of the Force," he replied before turning his gaze toward Yoda. "I see this to be a sign pf promise. I recommend we progress."
Windu waited until the ancient little green Master nodded in agreement. In his hand now was a data panel that began to display objects which only the Korun could see. Anakin closed his eyes, knowing what this test was for. They were testing his ability to see images through the minds of others. "Let me know when I should begin," he said calmly. Yoda raised a brow at him, but Anakin was already in a trance. The tiny alien gave a smile and a grunt, letting the boy know the test was beginning.
Images flashed through his mind as he began to hazily see the pictures being displayed on the data reader. "A cup," he said after the image cleared, quickly focusing on the next picture. "A blaster rifle. An ARC-170 starfighter."
Windu raised his brow at the boy's statement of the object on the screen. Not only was it correct, it was more detail correct than he'd expected. "Continue," he stated.
"A Hutt lifter platform. A hyperdrive unit. A Corellian Cruiser. A SoroSuub-127 custom speeder."
Now Windu was staring at Anakin and not the screen. The boy continued to list off objects seconds before they formed on the screen. He wasn't reading Windu's surface thoughts of what he saw anymore, he was <i>predicting</i> what was going to appear before it did. No human that Windu had ever seen before was capable of this kind of precognition.
Yoda saw the expression of shock on his former student's face, knew well what it meant, and signaled for Anakin to stop. "Very well done," the tiny Master exclaimed, hints of a smile forming on his lips. He stepped closer to the boy, now looking up at Anakin, though the human felt as if it was he who was looking up at Yoda. "Tell me, young Skywalker. How feel you?"
The boy was quiet for a moment, just before he shivered. "A bit cold," he replied at last. "I'm not sure why, but I've felt cold since we left Tatooine."
The tiny Jedi Master pursed his lips, taking a few steps around Anakin as he continued to look the boy over. There was something he was looking at, seeing past the flesh and into the boy's soul. "Afraid, are you, young one?"
Anakin gulped. He'd probably just blown the entire test. It was pointless to not be honest. "A bit," he admitted. He could see Dooku's brow rise. "I, uh...I've actually been pretty nervous about this whole thing, coming before all of you to be tested."
"Be mindful of your thoughts," came the words of warning from Ki-Adi-Mundi, who tilted his head slightly as he spoke. "Your thoughts dwell on...your father's death." A pause. "You see clearly his killer."
There was a chill down Anakin's spine as that monstrous face flashed in his mind's eye. He fought down the surge of anger that the memory brought, knowing that this was another test. "The man who attacked us when we were leaving Tatooine is the same man who killed my father," the boy answered, trying to keep his emotions under control. A few of the masters were shifting uncomfortably in their seats, but Yoda said nothing, and Dooku was leaning forward in his seat, almost as if he were mesmerized. "A part of me still wants to see him punished for what he did."
"If given the chance to take revenge on him, would you?" Mace Windu asked. His eyes did not betray any change in his mood, though the way he was leaning forward indicated he very much was interested in how Anakin would reply.
"I want to see justice for a horrible crime, not take revenge." The boy had snapped in reply, but he quickly calmed himself. He was breathing a bit more heavily, getting control of those terrible memories. "I'm not the one to decide his fate, I only know what he did to my father, my friends, and to me, and I can only act to prevent such things from happening again."
As the green little Jedi Master came around from his left side, Anakin felt like he was being looked straight through into his core. Yoda was looking within him to find the truth in his words, to see if what he said was truly how he believed. After a moment, the tiny Master gave a nod and hobbled back toward his chair, where he resumed his seat and gave Anakin his full attention. "Afraid to lose your own life, you are not. For others you do fear, seek to protect those you care about do you. Much anger I sense in you, but control you it does not."
One of the human Masters on the council gave a scoff as he shook his head. "I don't see what the point of this is, Master Yoda. The boy is far too old, why are we even-"
There was a sharp glare from Mace Windu that quickly silenced the offending speaker. Anakin gulped as he felt those masters who were at least giving him a chance observe him, took in his every action. It was like being on trial. "I understand if you don't think I can start training," the boy finally said after a long silence. He sighed and slumped his shoulders, head downcast. "To be honest, it's just a dream I'd had as a kid; to be a Jedi Knight like my grandfather. I've never really thought it would come true, not since my mother died." He paused and looked up to meet Yoda's penetrating gaze. "If you want me to just go, I understand."
He began to turn to leave. Anakin was mentally kicking himself; he'd screwed up somehow, failed some test or another, and it had destroyed anything that was left of his childhood dreams. He might well be strong with the Force like Qui-Gon said, but it just wasn't for him to be taught how to control that power. That much was made clear by this whole trial.
"No one said that you had failed your test, young Skywalker."
The boy halted. With those words from Mace Windu, Anakin slowly turned back toward the Council. A few of the Masters were shaking their heads, unable to understand why this was continuing. He could sense their thoughts, hear what they were thinking; he was too old, he could not be accept into the order at his age, it went against the rules. Yet, he could feel something from those that were in fact keeping an open mind, those that were indeed looking upon him as perhaps an exception to the rules. More so, he could feel a sense of compassion from Yoda and Mace Windu, the two that he felt would make the most of a difference in deciding his fate.
"At this time," Windu began, his eyes focused on the boy, "you have proven your abilities. Already you have learned how to control your strengths, to tap into the Force, and to foresee events that are almost immediate on a level that I have never seen before in a human."
Yoda nodded in agreement. "Decide your fate, we shall, young Skywalker. For now, recover from your ordeals. Find comfort with your friends, you should, for give you strength they do." A smile was forming on the ancient Jedi's lips, now more obvious than it have been before. "The bonds between you and those you care for, strong they are, and important they shall be."
"You have proven your humility," Dooku interjected. "By being willing to accept our decision, regardless of what it may be, you have proven that you are humble where perhaps others would not be." He chuckled as he turned toward the human master who had spoken out before. "Arrogance is something that has become very common in many Jedi as of late, even in those older and more experienced. It is refreshing to see such a young man who is able to discard his pride."
Once more, Yoda gave his agreement. He rose again from his seat, gesturing for Anakin to kneel down for him. As the boy dropped to his knees and sat before him, Yoda smiled. It warmed his heart to see such a humbled young man. Suddenly, as he was reaching to touch the boy's shoulder, he felt something flash in his mind. The tiny master went stiff as the images of a horrible event shot through his mind's eye like a shot of light. This boy was surrounded by a clouded future, shrouded in shadows and darkness. To train him would be dangerous, true, but the greater danger might come from not training him. The Master couldn't tell, for everything was clouded when he tried to see Anakin's future. Yet, he could feel something; a spark of light, shining as if it were a beacon of hope to a shining future.
As the vision ended, Yoda blinked, finding that Anakin was looking at him with concern. "Are you alright?" the boy asked in a whispered voice. The tiny Master looked about, then nodded. He'd been in a trance for at least a couple of minutes, that much was clear. Yoda took a deep breath and patted Anakin on his shoulder, signaling that the boy had nothing to worry about. Then, gripping his cane, Yoda returned to his seat.
For a long moment, he was silent, contemplating what it was he had seen. It was after several quiet minutes than he looked up at Anakin. "Await our decision in the company of your companions. Discuss these proceedings we must."
Anakin sighed with relief and nodded, bowing after he had risen to his feet. He turned and departed, leaving the Council to turn toward Yoda in concern for what had just occurred.
"I think it's clear that our decision should be no," came the words of that same Jedi Master. "He's far too old, already taken to anger. You heard him admit to his desire for revenge."
"I heard him admit to wishing justice for a crime that has gone unpunished," Dooku retorted calmly as he turned toward the outspoken Master, Micha Giiett. "His words, Master Giiett, were that he recognizes his place is not to decide punishments, and that only if he had no other choice would he act to destroy this monster." There was a grunt of pride from Dooku as he turned toward Yoda. "I think he has prove that he is most definitely worthy of our consideration. After all, his grandfather was a member of the Order and died in service to our ideals."
The Ongree Master, Coleman Kcaj, looked to his datapad once more as he reviewed the information that had been provided through Obi-Wan's own tests, as well as a bit of background history on Anakin. "His potential is staggering as well. His midi-chlorian count exceeds the charts, and one can assume any offspring he has will follow this trend." There seemed to be a smile on Kcaj's face as he tapp | |
