And so, I finally get an update for you guys. Yay. Part 1 of Chapter 12 for you today, enjoy.

==========================
Chapter 12
Lessons
==========================

There was a particular sort of calm that blanketed Obi-Wan whenever he came to the temple archives. Here he could find solitude, a sort of sanctuary whenever he decided to seek out more knowledge of the past. Certainly, he was no stranger to Madame Nu, who had become used to his long hours here in the archives, studying the history of the order and of events long since past. It had formed a sort of bond of understanding between the aged human mistress of the temple halls and the able young Jedi Knight; they both held a common pursuit of wisdom. In Obi-Wan's case, however, that pursuit often led him to histories that many Jedi would rather not recall having happened.

This time, however, it was not the past that Obi-Wan sought information on, but the present. With Quinlan off at the main hanger to prepare their ships, Kenobi took the chance to try and find information on the sector of space that they were to investigate. More so, it gave him time to check a suspicion he had about Anakin's heretige. While waiting for Jocasta Nu's arrival so he could better search for the system they needed to locate, Obi-Wan looked at one of the polished bronze busts that stood at the head of each row of data modules. One of them he recognized as his infamous ancestor, Tella Kenobi, whom he had mentioned during his defense of Anakin before the council. Truly, despite the gender difference, there was something of a resemblance between the ancient Jedi and Obi-Wan's own features. That the family name had survived for thousands of years said something as well for the strength of his heretige.

He sighed, knowing that his bloodlines were part of the reason more than a few members of the Council were wary of his presence. Coleman Kcaj was no fan of his, not since the dispute they'd gotten into some years ago, before he'd been granted the rank of Jedi Knight. If not for the fact that he had been Yoda's own prized student, Obi-Wan had no doubt that Kcaj would have attempted to discipline him by his own hand instead of deferring to the ancient Master.

At last, he felt the presence of Madame Nu approach. Obi-Wan broke his gaze upon the bust of his ancestor and gave the archive keeper a low bow. "Thank you for answering my call, Master Nu," he said in greeting. As he rose, he gestured to one of the computer terminals. "I'm having trouble finding a system that Quinlan Vos and myself have been assigned to investigate."

The wizened librarian had a pondering expression as she followed Kenobi to the terminal. "Do you have a system name or exact coordinates?"

He shook his head. They had not been able to acquire much information about their mission. "I'm afraid not. The Council didn't have much to tell us about our objective when we were given the assignment." Sitting down, Obi-Wan tapped in a series of overall location vectors, which brought up the sector in question. "From what we were told, there's been reports of unknown weapons testing out here, less than a parsec north of the Rishi Maze."

The screen showed the needed location, but there was no information on a star system in that region. Jocasta frowned as she tapped in a few commands, but nothing else was shown. "Strange," she whispered, unsure as to why they could find no data. "The Council would not be mistaken in locations if this is an official assignment matter..." After a moment, a thought came to her. "Let me do a gravitation scan."

The scar map shifted slightly, now showing a reading of recent gravitational data. The image indicated that there was a gravitational center where there was no system, indicating that something was amiss. "There seems to be inconsistencies with the records," she muttered, more to herself though than to Obi-Wan. The look on her face said that she was not happy with this strange occurrence. "There is no record of a system, but gravitational movements says otherwise..." Madame Nu pursed her lips, brown curling as she tried to find some kind of explanation. Another series of keystrokes ran for any indication of a gravitational singularity, but there was none. "No black holes or other such spatial anomalies to explain it."

"Is it possible that the archives are incomplete?" Obi-Wan questioned, though trying to make sure that he was speaking with the utmost respect for Madame Nu's records. "Eighty percent of the galaxy has been catalogued, perhaps this system is part of the uncharted percentage."

There was what almost looked like a look of wounded pride on Nu's face before she collected herself. "The sector has been well charted," she stated matter-of-factly. "If it does not show up in our records, then it simply does not exist." A pause as Madame Nu slowly found herself considering the facts though. "I am unable, however, to explain such a discrepancy. The Council was the source of your information, and they most certainly would not be wrong about the coordinates."

There was no denying the aged librarian's words; the Abrion sector was well charted. There was little chance that an entire star system had been overlooked, but the gravitational readings indicated that there was something there. Perhaps there was another explanation, though it was not one that Obi-Wan felt to be comforting. Yet it was the only plausible answer. "Someone erased the data," he stated, hoping that his conclusion would not offend Madame Nu. "I mean no disrespect, but it's the only possible explanation for this. Someone erased the data of this system from the archives."

Madame Nu went stiff. Not from pride, not from insult, but from worry that someone had possibly invaded her domain and altered the archives. "I will look into the matter at once," she stated, her tone now as rigid as her posture. This, Obi-Wan realized, was why even the exalted Masters of the Order did not dare intrude in Jocasta Nu's realm. "Only a Jedi could have accessed the archive databanks in such a fashion."

With a sigh, Obi-Wan stood up and gave a bow. "I'm sorry for this matter, Master Nu, and I fear there is something else I require your assistance in. It can wait until I return from my mission and this matter has been investigated."

The more friendly expression slowly crept back onto Nu's face as she nodded her thanks for Obi-Wan's concerns. "I'll have the research done why I attend to this outrage. What is it you require?"

His hand slipped into a belt pouch, now producing a data chip. "I need a DNA comparison run on this blood sample," Obi-Wan replied. He hesitated before continuing. Madame Nu was not known for taking well to requests of the nature he had, but it was something he had to know. "I need it to be cross referenced with the archive records of Jedi blood samples from after the events of the second Sith War, to see if there is a possible genealogical match."

After a moment, Madame Nu realized what Kenobi was getting at and accepted the data chip. Somehow, she quickly understood why he needed such a test preformed. "The results should be ready by the time you return, Knight Kenobi."

The young Jedi bowed in gratitude, then quickly made way for the hanger bay in the temple proper. His own mind was bothered by the very idea that a Jedi would have intentionally deleted the records of the system they were looking for. They had now the gravitational vectors, however, so if there was something there, they would be able to locate it. It still was disturbing though that someone was trying to hide this system from them.

As the lift rose toward the hanger bay level, Obi-Wan pondered on the possible results of the test he had asked Madame Nu to perform. If he was right, it could give a partial explanation for Anakin's rather high midi-chlorian count. It wasn't a total answer to that mystery, but it would shed some light on the matter. It was also possibly explain why he felt a type of kinship with the young teenager.

When the lift arrived at its destination, Kenobi stepped through the opened doors to find that Quinlan Vos had already made the departure preparations as two sleek Delta-7 mark-two Aethersprites starfighters. Artoo had already been loaded into the interface socket on the left side of the ship that had been readied for Obi-Wan. The little droid seemed to be having some kind of an argument with the vessel's computer from the sound of the beeps and whistles that the wily little astromech was giving off. Obi-Wan couldn't resist smiling as he walked over to join Quinlan.

"Is everything ready?"

The Kiffar Jedi nodded as he finished loading his own astromech unit into his ship. "Just waiting for you," Quinlan replied. He brushed his hands off, then gave a tilted head gesture. "You find anything on this mystery system?"

Kenobi shrugged while walking over to his assigned Aethersprite. "I've got gravitational vectors, but the system we're looking for doesn't show up in the archives." He quickly frowned as he climbed into the cockpit and strapped himself in. After a moment, Obi-Wan turn toward Quinlan. "Someone deleted those records, Quinlan, someone who doesn't want us to find out about what's going on out there."

The Kiffar gave an anticipatory grin as he climbed into the cockpit of his own vessel. He was obviously ready for such a challenge. It came, Obi-Wan knew, from having an aggressive personality, despite the best efforts of Master Tholme to ground it out of Vos. So long as such traits were kept under control, they were overlooked, but sometimes Obi-Wan worried about his old friend's enjoyment for a good fight.

Canopies sliding shut and sealing, the pair of sleek fighters lifted up from the hanger platforms and slowly maneuvered out of the bay before firing up their main engines and racing for the reaches of space. Obi-Wan quickly relayed the gravity coordinates to Vos as they made their approach to the series of hyperspace rings in orbit around Coruscant, engines mounts containing powerful hyperdrives for ships that were too small to have their own. The two Aethersprites docked with their own respective drive rings, loading the navigational vectors and pulling away from the planet to get away from the gravity well that could disrupt the careful calculations of the hyperdrive computers.

And then, as the two ships stretched off into the void of hyperspace, they were gone.

******

The sun had yet to rise. A trickle of red was beginning to bleed into the pre-dawn sky, almost signaling an ill omen for the future. In the Theed palace, Nute Gunray was making the last preparations for what would no doubt be a ferocious battle. Battle droids were given their orders before loading into the troop carriers while the command units made their way to the tanks and STAPs. Everything merely awaited the arrival of the Republic fleet.

In the throne room, Darth Maul sat in silence, relishing in this seat of command, taking in the feel of possessing power over others. Surely, this was how his master felt over him; the power to give a single command and have it carried out without question. It was an addictive sensation, one that he would soon be able to feel repeatedly once his own master was no more.

The main doors slid up to reveal the Neimoidians. Maul snapped his eyes open and rose to his feet, a growl barely escaping his lips as he walked toward Gunray and Haako. "What is it?" he demanded, one hand slipping under his robes to grasp hold of his saber. The Zabrak was already tempted to cut Gunray down here and now for his incompetence and cowardice.

A bow from the Neimoidians calmed his anger slightly. "We have readied our troops, Lord Maul," Gunray reported quickly. He was visibly trembling, but Maul decided not to say anything about it. He was, after all, a terrifying vision to behold, just as he was intended to be. "The Republic fleet will not know what happened once we unleash our full force upon them."

The Sith said nothing in reply. It was not an exaggeration to say that Nute Gunray was not only a coward, but vastly overconfident as well. It was a combination that could spell disaster if the Neimoidians were in command. Such, thankfully, was not the case. Sidious had the foresight to place his own apprentice in charge of all operations here on Naboo, and had well warned Maul that the Republic fleet would outclass the Trade Federation forces. It would be a lesson to the Neimoidians not to put all their faith in their droid army, nor to exalt themselves so high upon their bloated egos, should their blockade be pounded into submission by the Republic.

He allowed himself a brief smile before returning his expression to one of stone-cold command. "Move your ships into position to counter the Republic fleet," he ordered, now moving to walk past Gunray and Haako. Dawn would soon come, and with it would be the advent of a battle that would spark off the beginning of the end for the Republic and the Jedi. "All battle-droids are to deploy the moment ground craft make their approach to land."

Nute Gunray snorted at the idea of Republic troops making it to the surface. "There will be no need. The Republic will not have a chance to-"

Whirling about, Maul gave Gunray a piercing glare that quickly silenced the Federation Viceroy. The black cloaks that attired the Sith Lord were still settling as he took a large step toward Gunray. "It is unwise for you to presume that you may question my orders, Viceroy." Maul flashed his sharpened teeth, causing the Neimoidians to flinch and back away from him. It was enough to make him chuckled faintly before turning and making his way out of the throne room.

He was halfway down the corridor to the lift when he felt a psychic tremor. Maul came to a halt, tiling his head slightly while attempting to search out the source of the resonating wave in the Force. It felt very familiar, but he couldn't quite recall where he had felt this kind of intense presence before.

"There is a vergence in the Force," he whispered to himself before returning his attention to the task at hand and continuing down the corridor.

Sorry if I misunderstood, but I've seen people who think that going to a thread and advertising their own stuff is perfectly fine and don't get it when people get upset. I've had people do that in threads I posted for audio mixes I did, and "went "not bad. I have mine, which is better, so come to my thread and hear my mix", and thought it was perfectly alright to do a thread invasion.

Anyway, if you could do some promoting for me, that'd be great, since I actually have been very busy with writing the project, and working on my costumes, not to mention Darth Real-Life has burdened me with a job.

A small partial chapter update today, since I'm overdue. ^^;;; Damn writer's block.

=============================
Chapter 12 part 2
=============================

Screaming through the other-dimensional realm of hyperspace, a large cluster of ships made their way toward their destination of Naboo. It was a large scale fleet, with over two and a half dozen Consular-class cruisers that had been modified with weapon mountings, a dozen massive Dreadnaught battle cruisers, and one massive wedge shaped ship that bore design marks setting it apart as the command craft. They had all made only one stop, halfway between Coruscant and Naboo, to allow Regent Amidala's transport to dock aboard the massive newly commissioned Victory-Class Star Destroyer, the Qel-Droma. Now, the entire fleet was only hours away from its destination, but the tensions aboard the ships comprising the Republic relief force were very high.

It was no surprise to the older members of the command staff. Many of those assigned to this mission had been children during the last conflict a decade earlier. Such a lack of experience was bound to cause nervous feelings in the ranks, but it was something that should pass once they arrived and brought down the Federation blockade. The fleet was twice the size of what the Separatist forces had been during the Stark Hyperspace War, and predictions for a Separatist reinforcement of the Trade Federation fell well under their own strength numbers.

Aboard the Qel-Droma, Qui-Gon had already arrived at the special meditation area that had been designed into the ship for the use of any Jedi that might be traveling aboard the newly constructed vessel. Connection to the chamber was a large training facility, one that the Jedi Master knew would well serve in the time they had to start some of Anakin's training.

As he and Padme waited for Anakin to arrive, Qui-Gon looked out the large transparent viewport, peering into the vastness of hyperspace. There was quite a bit on his mind, as one could tell merely from observing him. Already, several young members of the ship's crew had turned to him for console and advise in the face of their nervous fears about this mission. Despite his time spent trying to calm the minds of the young and inexperienced crew, Qui-Gon found his own mind dwelling on Obi-Wan. Certainly, he knew that the young Jedi Knight could take care of himself. Kenobi was trained by Yoda himself, after all. And yet, he worried for his young friend, having come to see Obi-Wan as part of a more personal family than the Jedi at large. It came, in all likelihood, from the fact that Obi-Wan had some a strong sibling-style relationship with Padme, the young student whom Qui-Gon looked upon as his own daughter.

Already he was forming such a connection with Anakin, whom he could tell had an immense fondness of the young Naboo Padawan. Qui-Gon smiled as he thought on how much the two young teenagers were trying to hide how much they were attracted to each other. It might be enough to fool most of the Order, but Jinn was very much aware of their feelings, how they felt about each other. He did nothing to stop it, since he'd long ago learned that the greatest force binding life and the galaxy together was the love for others. If what kept Anakin on the path of good were the emotions and feelings he shared with Padme, then so be it. To disrupt that fragile balance was to invite the Dark Side to claim the boy.

Yet they were still trying to hide it from him. That, Qui-Gon had decided, simply would not do. He turned his gaze toward Padme, deciding that she should know that the budding romance was not hidden from her master's eyes. "I hope you are aware that I'm not blind to your feelings, my young Padawan," he calmly stated, returning his eyes to the viewport once Padme had sharply turned toward him. Jinn kept his expression neutral. "It may not be true love, not yet, but you and Anakin share a deep connection already."

The girl bit her lip. She wasn't sure how to answer her master's words, since they were true. There was no way to hide their relationship from Qui-Gon, not at this point, but what Padme was unsure of was how the Jedi master would treat their feelings for each other. Would he order them to break off what they shared, insist that they be separated?

"I'm not going to stop it," he continued. His face still had not changed to express his state of mind, but his voice carried a tone of calm approval. "You may very well be his greatest anchor to the Light in his trials ahead." For a moment, Qui-Gon was silent. Then he turned his head toward her again and finally broke a smile. "Just try and be discreet about it in front of the other Jedi."

A grin and feeling of joy almost broke its way from under her self-control. Padme quickly held on to the emotion and instead returned Qui-Gon's words with a nod. It was enough that, though it could not be outward and public, she had her master's approval. Now, her mind wandered, starting to focus on what was taking Anakin so long to arrive at the training chamber.

The sound of the opening door caught her attention. Padme quickly spun on her heel to see a young figure dressed in obviously oversized Jedi attire. She had to stifle the giggle she had at the sight of seeing Anakin dressed in the clothes of a learner, which were folded over and shoved as much as possible to actually allow him to have ample mobility. It looked like he was about to be swallowed by the tunic and tabards alone, and his arms weren't even visible from inside the sleeves that hung down well past his hands.

He groaned, face flushed with red as he walked in. Dangling still from his belt was his grandfather's silver lightsaber, though the power-cell has still not been replaced, as she could see once he came close enough for Padme to see the details on the hilt. "Remind me how I'm supposed to actually do anything in this thing." Anakin gave a wince has he held up one of the sleeves to show just how much they were draping over his hands. "I'm just about drowning in these things, how am I supposed to fight if I have to?"

With a brow arched up in response, Qui-Gon reached out toward a trio of slender blade weapons set against a wall that flew through the air to his hand. He passed one to Padme, then lightly tossed a second to Anakin before holding his own as one would grip a lightsaber. "I'm about to show you, Anakin." A flick of a switch, and the sword hummed to life with the sound of high speed vibration. It took Anakin a moment to realize that the weapons were dulled down vibro-blades.

The boy brought his own blade humming to life, testing it a bit before taking a ready posture. Qui-Gon once more raised a brow at seeing the boy's posture; it was tensed, yet obviously all wrong for the style of combat he was about to begin learning. The way he was trying to keep his sleeves up off his hands was also a hindrance to his form. It was time to begin teaching this young boy the proper way of Jedi combat arts.

A swift and fluid movement sent the virbo-blade in Anakin's hands flying away and clattering to the polished floor. In an instant, the tip of Qui-Gon's blade was mere inches from the boy's chest. "You need to maintain a proper grip on your weapon," the Jedi Master stated matter-of-factly. He brought back his blade, allowing Anakin to retrieve his own, then took up his stance once more. "We'll begin with the basics. Form One, Shii-Cho." He brought the vibro-blade up in a defensive posture. "Every youngling within the Order is taught this form before progressing on to more advanced styles. You will learn this as well."

A quick nod was Anakin's only reply. He held the vibro-blade again, this time more emulating the grip he observed Qui-Gon using. If nothing else, he had a talent for learning quickly through observation. Another similar movement from the Jedi Master was met with a simple blocking stand, but this time, the boy was able to hold onto his weapon. Definitely an improvement, but not much. The boy was truly only able to defend in such a manner because Qui-Gon was not moving at his full speed.

"Not bad," the Master complimented before moving again. He added a bit more speed to the second strike, causing Anakin to take a step away before bringing his own vibro-blade about to deflect. It cost him ground, but it proved to have given him a better posture for holding off the attack. Qui-Gon gave a simple nod before making his third swing that was once more blocked. The boy had potential, that much was very clear, but he was also very clumsy in how he moved. His movements were blatantly telegraphed before he made them, any real foe would be able to read his every attack and defense, and thus respond appropriately.

His gaze went to Padme for a moment. As Qui-Gon considered how to teach Anakin some unpredictability, a small smile formed on his lips before turning off the frequency actuator. "Not bad for a start," he remarked while stepping away from his student. He gestured for Padme to take his place, causing the girl to look at him with a perplexed expression while Anakin looked to have suddenly gotten very nervous. "Maybe it would help you to learn a bit from Padme for the moment."

The boy was definitely nervous about that prospect. He was probably thinking that he was going to end up hurting Padme, something that he doubtlessly didn't want to imagine doing, especially at this point. Qui-Gon had to resist smiling; it was more likely that Anakin would be the one on the butt end of injuries than the Padawan.

The young Padawan gave him a smile. "I'll try and go easy on you," she quipped, then suddenly moved like a blur. Anakin tried to quickly respond in turn to the attack, his vibro-blade catching Padme's only briefly before she swung around and managed to catch him in the leg with a fluid slap from the weapon she was holding.

Hopping away, Anakin grabbed his thigh, wincing from the sting that he'd recieved, but resuming a ready stance. "Okay," he muttered under his breath. "I should be worried about me getting hurt, not her." He took a breath, then made his own attack, his blade blocked repeatedly as he attempted to find some kind of opening in Padme's defense. He failed completely, finding himself suddenly flying back, just about rolling across the floor, and slamming backfirst and upside down against the wall. After a moment, he slid down and groaned, having dropped his vibro-blade.

It didn't take the soft giggle from Padme to let him know that he'd at least managed to make her laugh. She'd used some kind of Force push on him, no doubt, to teach him something of a lesson. He didn't find that at all funny, however. Picking on a guy in his first bits of training was a cruel joke.

He shifted his weight, noting that Padme was readying to defend. With a grunt, Anakin thrust himself up into the air, bring his weapon about for a downward strike. What he failed to notice was the glint that flashed in Padme's eyes just before she twirled out of his path of landing, flipped off her vibro-blade, and brought it smacking right between his legs with teh flat of the blade. The boy let out a yell just before he crashed to the ground, grabbing his groin while wincing as Padme couldn't help but smile.

A very cruel joke indeed.

"I thought I explained that you should not be doing these kinds of things to someone who had barely started their training."

There was once more that sparkle in the girl's eye before she glanced to her teacher. "Only trying to teach him a few practical lessons, Master."

Anakin was still on the ground, almost sobbing as he rocked back and forth. "You don't hit a guy there like that!" he exclaimed, his voice almost cracking. After a minute, he finally climbed to his feet, though he was very tender about walking. "Oh frak...that stings..."

For a moment, Qui-Gon said nothing. He simply looked to Padme and gave her an expression that said enough for him. She's gone a little overboard with this little sparring match. "Don't take it personally," the Jedi Master finally said. "She does this to all her parring partners on the first time match...including Obi-Wan."

There was a wince from Anakin. "I feel so loved," he cracked as he hobbled away toward the door. "You mind if I...just go try and walk this...ow...off?"

Only a simple nod relayed Qui-Gon's approval. It would be best, since he had a few things he need to talk with Padme about. "Feel free to explore the ship," he stated. "When you're ready to continue, I will be here."

Wow, this is one of the best rewrites that I've seen in my time reading Star Wars fanfiction. I have only two small things that I want to bring up. First, why the change between Panaka and Typho? I'm not complaining, just curious about it. The other thing is the Ongree Jedi Master, Coleman Kcaj. I had thought that his last name was Trebor, but perhaps I was mistaken. Either way, I love what you've written so far and ask for you to update soon! Too many good stories are left unfinished these days.

P.S - I didn't notice in my reading if you were establishing a P.M list. If so, I'd like to be on it.

Zoe: Preacher, don't the Bible have some pretty specific things to say about killing?
Book: Quite specific. It is, however, somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps.

I deeply apologize for the lack of updates. Darth Employment and filming for "Predator vs X-Men", in which I play Wolverine, have taken up a lot of my time, not to mention the horrible writer's block that's hit me for chapter 12. This story is going to be a good half longer than the canon Ep 1 since we have the entire Kamino plot showing up now, with Boba and Jango introed soon enough.

Again, I'm so sorry for the down time of the story. This is a full nine book series, plus mini books inbetween, so it's gonn'a be a while. I'll get all the new readers added to my list.

Trivia info

The change between Panaka and Typho was, well, which sounds better; "Adama Panaka" or "Adama Typho"? In honesty, it's just because Typho has a longer role in the canon prequels, while Panaka got a fourth of a movie. Being hs is Panaka's nephew, Typho just felt like a better choice. Also, Coleman Kcaj is one of two Ongree Masters.

Oh, edit notice. I have yet to fix it here, but Amidala's name was altered to "Neimri Amidala" inters; fo "Amidala Neimris". I have a liot of edits to make in this copy...grrr... the more updates copy is at the Star Wars Rebirth Project.

And yes, Padme did give Obi a wack in the crotch the first time they spared. ~_o

Hey, I just came across this and am I sorry I never saw it before. I read it all in one sitting. happy

You've done a fantastic job with this. It's ironic that I just watched TPM with my kids today, and I find this wonderful AU of it! And it's going to be a 9 part series! dancing

I love your characterizations- especially Anakin and Maul. Anakin is so much better, being older and not a slave. Maul has a personality here- in the canon version he just seemed like an errand boy. And I like the fact that Padme is a Jedi as well.

Please PM me when you get a chance to update! Looking forward to more! happy

Thank you so much. I'm actually hoping that, at least when episode 1 is done, that I can go back and film the Reborth project as a series of fan films. Watch George have a heart attack as someone outdoes his beloved Prequels on a hundredth of the budget he gave himself. =P

Yeah, nine full books, plus mini-books that take place to cover less important events, like the five years between eps 1 and 2, and the second five year gap between 2 and 3.

I made Maul ploting and ambitious because, well, he's a Sith! That's what Sith do! Jedi Padme made more sense to me, being that, it would be even more forbidden between Jedi, for reasons that are yet to be discussed...lets just say Yoda knows very well why Jedi are not allowed to marry other Jedi...
