Entry to the Clone Trooper Discussion Topic Challenge #1
Describe one of the following battles through the eyes of a clone OC of any flavor you desire (that makes sense, anyway; i.e. there wouldn't be ARC troopers at the Battle of Geonosis, clone commandos at the Battle of Coruscant, or Null-ARCs at the Battle of Kashyyyk): the Battle of Geonosis, the Battle of Krant, the Battle of Thule, the Battle of Muunilist, the Battle of Mon Calamari, the First Battle of Kamino, the Second Battle of Kamino, the Battle of Coruscant, the Battle of Utapau, or the Battle of Kashyyyk. Use at least 1,500 words, please. First-person and third-person perspectives are both permissable. And last but not least, have fun!

It is only one who is thoroughly acquainted with the evils of war that can thoroughly understand the profitable way of carrying it on. - Sun Tzu, "The Art of War"

"Go, go, go!" CT-13/23-1776 'Necro' heard Lieutenant Day shouting at his platoon over the hangar bay of the Venator-Class Stardestroyer Deceiver. All 36 men of the 3rd Platoon were standing on the edge of the hangar, hundreds of meters beneath them the planet's desert surface that was penetrated by giant sinkholes.

Two more Venators were hovering above a gargantuan sinkhole in which the main battle was going on. Every now and then, droid fighters, Republic assault gunboats and gunships came out of the hole, all guns blazing, but then quickly disappeared - either in explosions or back into the hole. And one of those sinkholes, the rather small one closest to them, was their target.

And they were specialized paratroopers of the 2nd Airborne Company of the 212th Attack Battalion that was just now fighting Separatist forces on Utapau, under the command of the legendary Jedi General Kenobi and Commander Cody. They, the 3rd platoon, were the last reinforcement wave to go to the ground, and it had been a wise choice of Commander Cody to keep them back for so long. Not because they were poor fighters - under an army of clones equal in strength and skills, such a thing was rather unusual - but because they were the most elite airborne unit in the whole Republic army.

Sergeant Hett's troopers of Parjai Squad were to first ones to execute Lieutenant Day's order. Arms wide open, nine clone troopers in specialized, reinforced armor for high altitude drops one after another jumped - or better "fell", as they actually just stepped to the edge and let themselves fall - out of the hangar bay towards the ground. Once they had passed the slipstream the Deceiver had given them against the incredibly strong winds sweeping over Utapau's dry and desert-like surface, they were caught by powerful gusts that increased their falling speed by a multiple.

Sergeant Necro saw the lieutenant's sign and ordered his men to jump. His second-in-command, Zero, was the first one to jump, followed by the other seven troopers of Prudii Squad.

Once all his men had jumped, Necro took one last look around, saw Lieutenant Day nodding, and then turned towards the bay's exit. He gathered speed and by reaching the end of the floor, he jumped off and let himself fall.

For the first few seconds, there was nothing special about the fall, but then the sergeant was suddenly caught by the tremendous forces of the Utapaun winds. Fortunately, the wind was in his back and speeded him towards the ground, but the sudden impact made it hard for him to orientate in the air. He paddled a bit with his arms and legs to get back on track to the landing zone, but only partially succeeded. It was quite hard to maneuver in this storm-like wind, but eventually, Necro managed to fly as properly as possible.

Taking a short look to the altitude meter in his HUD, he saw that he was still about one and a half kilometers above the ground, what left him plenty of time to get to get to the landing zone.

The remainder of the free fall was rather uneventful, but when Necro reached an altitude of about two hundred meters, he knew what to do next.

With a short clacking sound, short wings of ultralight duraplast extended from his backpack, and Necro was no longer in free fall. He now could maneuver properly with the gliders and was able to glide in circles down to his target. First, the wings had speeded him up, but Necro quickly changed that by maneuvering a bit upwards and then staying in a horizontal position that slowed him down a lot.

The advantage those wings or gliders, as they were also called, had to parachute-canopies was that they were not as recognizable and didn't make a good target as latter, but they also had a disadvantage: where parachutes were made to slow down the fall, the gliding wings could even speed the fall, if used improperly. For a specially trained paratrooper like Necro however, they were even more effective than parachutes, for they could also additionally be equipped with a jetpack and made the trooper capable of flying, not only falling. Necro was gliding without a jetpack now, though.

In a nearly horizontal position, he slowly steered in circles towards the landing zone in one of the smallest sinkholes around. The sinkhole's diameter was about a hundred meters, but it was as deep as all other holes. About forty meters below the surface was a small platform with a connection to the tunnel network that linked sinkholes and cities beneath the surface.

On the platform, Necro could make out Parjai Squad and eight men of Prudii Squad, who were standing on defensive positions, waiting for their sergeant to land and pointed him to a large free area, where Necro landed a short time later. He set his feet on the ground and ran a few meters before he finally came to a halt. He rejected his gliding wings and walked over to his squad.

"Welcome, sir," his second-in-command CT-10/00-0000, or Zero, as he was called, greeted him.

"How was the flight?" CT-88/91-5643 asked ironically. "We hope you enjoyed the view and you will fly with us again, soon."

"Shut it, Fodder," Zero ordered him. "It's no time to make jokes right now. Let's hope Talon and Teroch Squad arrive soon. We gotta get moving."

"Copy that," Necro finally said. He was no man of many words, but his men respected him nevertheless.

"Look," Private Atross said, pointing with his arm to the sky, "they are coming."

Necro followed CT-88/93-7765's advice and looked up to the sky, where he and the others had come from, too. He could make out nineteen paratroopers, some in close, some in far distance. The nearest one, probably Sergeant Seven from Talon Squad, was just about to land. One after another, the troopers landed, and when finally Lieutenant Day stepped on the ground, they were complete.

The lieutenant walked towards the entrance of the tunnel, his four squads with their sergeants in front of him.

"As far as I can tell," he said, "we are complete and no one's missing. We were sent here to fall into the Seps' back, and so far, I don't think they have any idea that we are here. We're splitting up, two squad teams - Teroch and Prudii Squad, you are led by Sergeant Necro to take the right flank, Parjai and Talon Squad, you're taking the left flank under my command. You know your orders, troopers. Now go get moving!"

Necro was not surprised that he was to lead the right flank - Sergeant Thorne from Teroch Squad had only joined the 2nd Airborne Company two months ago, after their former leader, Sergeant Gaunt, and half of his men had died in battle. Sergeant Necro on the other hand had been in the 2nd Airborne Company since the time it was founded and was far more experienced than his co-sergeant.

"You heard him right," Necro shouted out after Day and his team had gone through the tunnel-entrance. "Let's do this quick and clean, and stay alive, or I'll get a Wookiee to tear your arms and legs of if you don't! Move it, squads!"

Commander Cody had reported that there was a big battle going on in the sub-surface city between two giant sinkholes. The Republic was coming from one side, the Separatists from the other, but the battle was not going too well, so the commander had sent his last wave to attack the CIS-troops from behind. The two teams of the 3rd platoon would attack the enemy forces from two sides, forcing them to split their forces and allow the remainder of the army to make a swift strike against them. Once the Separatist troops were split off, they 3rd platoon had to retreat quickly, for they would not stand a chance against their numerous enemies. Necro found this plan more than moronic; it resembled a suicide squad. But Necro was not to question his superior's orders but to follow them. But he would not stand around and do nothing, either. When the time came, he had to make a choice - and he hoped that time would not be too soon.

"Everything okay, Sarge?" the voice of Doc, the squad's medic, brought him back out of his thoughts. They had been walking for a few minutes now, and still there had been no hard contact.

"Err... yeah, I'm alright," Necro replied. "It's just weird that we have not hit on hostiles, yet."

"Once the battle's begun," Private Fodder piped up, "you'll be happy about the short time we've had without fighting Seps."

"The sooner the battle begins," Zero said, "the sooner it can be over. And now shut it, Private."

"Roger that," the trooper replied disappointed. "It's ju..."

"What did he say? Will you shut up, or shall I see to that," CT-17/51-5000 'Thor' said harshly.

"I'm already silent...," Fodder said.

"Let's get a move on, squads" Necro ordered and interrupted the chatter of his inferiors. "We want to do this as fast as possible."

"Hostiles on three hundred meters," CT-73/81-6876 'Kad', who had been walking a bit in front of the others, finally reported over comm a few minutes later. "Dozens of battledroids, three Muckracker droids and a dwarf spider droid on the ground, plus about twenty battledroids on the buildings and higher levels."

"Copy that," Necro answered and switched the comm channel. "Sergeant Necro here, ready to engage hostiles. Awaiting orders."

"Wait for our signal," Lieutenant Day commed back. "We must attack simultaneously. Day out."

"Roger that. Necro out," the sergeant replied.

"Get ready for battle, we engage the enemy as soon as Lieutenant Day and his troops are ready," he ordered the squads. Turning to his own squad, he said: "Thor, you better get your rocket launcher - we want that spider droid down first. Kad and Atross, get your sniper rifles ready - your target are the tinnies on the buildings. Dee, you're giving the battle some heat: make sure your EMPs hit the Muckrackers, we don't want to deal with them in actual combat. The rest, just try to hit as many as you can."

The paratroopers of Prudii Squad nodded and went to checking and preparing their arms.

"My boys are taking out the big ones," he told Sergeant Thorne, "so make sure we don't waste ammo on the same targets."

"Affirmative," Teroch Squad's leader replied and went to give his troops orders.

Now it's just about waiting..., Necro thought.

The seconds passed, and out of the seconds became minutes. After five minutes waiting, Sergeant Necro gut impatient. He contacted Lieutenant Day, but latter was still moving and had no hostiles in range, yet.

"If we wait too long, sir, the rest of the battalion's going to lose the battle," Necro said. "We have to attack now!"

"No," the lieutenant answered. "We can't risk to lose the advantage of surprise if we don't attack simultaneously."

"With all due respect sir, if we attack now, the Seps are moving to us, and you and maybe even the rest of our troops can fall in their back. That may not be so good for us, but maybe it's the only chance for us to win."

"Okay," Lieutenant Day finally said after a short silence. "You can attack at will, and I wish you good luck, but I tell you, Necro, you're risking your life and that of your troops. I trust you to make the right choice, Sergeant. Day out."

Now that's something of a mess..., Necro thought desperately. What the hell shall I do?

And he made a choice.

"Get into position, squads," Sergeant Necro ordered. "You know what to do, so do it properly - and keep Lieutenant Day's order in mind: stay alive. Once the spider droid is down, you can fire at will. Let's do this, boys!"

Acknowledging in action, the two squads moved on, with the snipers left behind - they needed some distance from the actual battle. Private Thor shouldered his PLX-1 missile launcher and aimed for the Dwarf Spider Droid ahead of him. With a swift swoosh the rocket shot out of the heavy weapon's muzzle and rapidly approached the spider-like man-tall droid. The blue-shimmering missile hit the unsuspecting battledroid in a loud and fascinating explosion that made not only the Dwarf Spider Droid but also several normal battledroids near him to burning junk.

With the most dangerous target down, the other troopers approached, all guns blazing and throwing EMP grenades, while the snipers took out the battledroids on the buildings with a striking sedateness. With the element of surprise on their side, the paratroopers quickly got hand of the threat, and even the feared crab droids did not stand a chance after they had been taken out by EMP grenades.

Sergeant Necro tired to spare as much ammo as possible, so he aimed carefully for each targets' weaknesses and took most of his hostiles out by only few shots. Sometimes, however, his targets were already shot by one of the snipers before he could even aim for it.

After a few short minutes of battle, Teroch and Prudii Squad had the position taken and all hostiles down, without any casualties or even dead on their side.

"What's your status, Sergeant?" Lieutenant Day asked over comm.

"We successfully engaged the Seps," Necro reported. "No victims on our side, sir. Ready to move on on your command."

"Damnit, Necro, I thought you'd be doing the right thing. We just spotted a bunch of droids, but before we could attack, they moved out, towards your position. I think you got half of the Seps on your tail, vod."

Now that is a problem..., Necro thought desperately.

"But," the lieutenant continued, "you're lucky. We just received new orders from Commander Cody: the 3rd platoon has to regroup with the rest of the battalion. So you better make a big circle around the Seps and meet us at the rendezvous point."

"Copy that, sir," Sergeant Necro replied confused. What the fierfek is that all about?!

"New orders, squads," he said to his men. "We're regrouping with the rest of the 3rd and then move on to the main Republic forces. Let's get a ..."

"Sorry to interrupt," Sergeant Thorne said, "but one of my men just spotted a lot of Separatist troops advancing to our position. Seems like the distraction worked, but I bet they think we're more than just two squads. We can't move around them, sir, we've got to retreat."

K'atini! Why isn't anything according to plan here?!

"Okay," Necro said, "change of plans. Doc, contact the Deceiver to send two gunships to our drop zone. Dee and Fodder, plant some mines around here. We want the Seps to think we're still around. Hurry!"

"Yes, sir," the troopers replied and went to work.

"Sergeant Thorne, get your squad and move to the landing zone. We meet you there, ASAP."

"Affirmative," the other sergeant replied. "Teroch Squad, retreat!"

Necro watched his comrades go and went to Doc.

"Status?" he asked his inferior.

"They have only one gunship ready, sir," the medic and comm officer answered. "It's only enough space for one squad, so they gotta fly twice."

"Yeah, I know that. Seems we've got to make a last stand. Explosives ready?" he asked Dee and Fodder.

"Copy that. Ready to go, sir," Dee replied.

"Alright, squad," Necro ordered. "Let's get a move on!"

************

When they arrived at the landing platform a few minutes later, Sergeant Thorne and Teroch Squad were already gone. How much better can it get? Necro thought. 9 troopers against at least the decuple of droids... man, that's gonna be a real last stand.

"I bet we don't have any more explosives to blow up the tunnel, do we?" he asked his explosives experts.

"Nope, sir, not really," Fodder replied. "I'm sorry, but it seems we have to fight with swords and axes, sir."

Fodder was lucky that his sergeant had a helmet on; for Necro's glance at him was more than just scary. The sergeant didn't find the private's comment funny in the least, but he did not say anything.

No one said a word for a while, but eventually it was Fodder who broke the silence.

"Man, they really could hurry a bit," he said.

"Who?" Zero asked. "The Seps or the gunship?"

"Ha-ha," Fodder replied. "You should become comedian."

"Shut it, both of you," Necro said harshly. "The least thing we need now is chatter. We're just gonna wait and hope the gunship's back soon."

"Yes, sir," the two replied, "sorry, sir."

"Sir, the Seps are closing in," Private Kad reported over comm. "ETA one minute, sir."

"Roger," Necro said. "Doc, try to contact the gunship that's coming for us. I don't want their ETA to be longer than Seps'."

"Negative, sir," Private Doc replied after contacting the vessel. "ETA two minutes, sir - and I already told them to hurry."

"Fierfek," Necro cursed under his breath. "Okay, troopers, assemble on the left and right of the entrance, so that the Seps don't see us when they're coming. Prepare for a hard, but hopefully short battle. Good luck, boys! Kote! Darasuum Kote!"

"Kote!" his troopers replied as if out of one mouth. Mentioning the old Mandalorian war chant hopefully would give them a bit of hope, Sergeant Necro thought. "Darasuum Kote!"

Toc---Toc---Toc---Toc

Sergeant Necro could clearly hear the metallic footsteps of an army of droids stepping in a deadly precise unison on the ground.

Toc---Toc---Toc---Toc

But between the periodical same sounds of normal battledroids, he could hear deeper sounds of stampers from more dangerous droids.

Toc---Toc---Toc---Toc

--Stomp-----Stomp--

And both sounds were coming clearer, more audible by each instant - they were coming nearer.

Toc---Toc---Toc---Toc---Toc---Toc

--Stomp------Stomp------Stomp--

And then, there was a final 'toc', and the many droids stopped as if they were only one droid.

Necro was standing on the right wall to the entrance, his last EMP grenade in his left, the DC-15S rifle in his right hand. He looked to the other side were the other troopers were waiting for his signal. And then, he nodded.

He and Zero both threw an EMP grenade simultaneously into the tunnel, then stepped back to allow the other to toss their concussion grenades and thermal detonators. The tunnel was wide enough that the explosions did not penetrate its ceiling, but it shook heavily and soil was thrown around, nevertheless.

Salvos of red blaster bolts sprayed out of the entrance, but none was aimed or destined to hit anyone - it was just curtain fire to prevent the clones from firing back. And unfortunately, it worked. Necro had not expected such tactics from his droid enemies - he had estimated the droids to move forward, out of the tunnel, but he had guessed wrong. Then, he heard a sound that was more than just displeasing:

--Stomp------Stomp------Stomp--

He well knew what kind of devastating machine this sound belonged to: a Dwarf Spider Droid with reinforced armor that was not much affected by blaster impact or even EMP or other grenades. Necro's estimation would eventually be fulfilled, or at least form a certain point of view. The hostile war machine would just "walk" right out of the tunnel and simply erase the clones from their existence in life.

The elite clone paratrooper sergeant already thought it was over now, when he heard another familiar sound - a sound that was even more familiar than the sound of the spider droid.

He never would have thought that the unique sound of a Republic Gunship would fill him with so much hope and satisfaction.

He looked up in the sky and saw the LAAT/i slowly hovering down into the sinkhole. He knew exactly what to do know, as well as his troopers did. Although his men had already began to ran away from the walls, he shouted out "Get down!". His command was fulfilled before his even had finished the first word - in fact, he was the last one to throw himself to the ground and hope he was far away enough not to get hurt by the coming explosion. He heard the missile clacking into the long barrel of the gunship's rocket launcher, he heard the missile launching with a loud swoosh, and he heard the missile hitting the ceiling just above the Dwarf Spider Droid. And then he felt the loud explosion and the strong quake that shook the ground, and he saw lots of shrapnel going down all around him. Once there was only silence, he stood up and looked at the former entrance. The whole ceiling was crashed down and had buried the spider droid and many other Separatist forces below it.

He turned back and saw the gunship landing, and his troopers already jumped into the small troop hold. Necro ran to the ship and jumped in, too, and only seconds later the gunship took off again.

"You just saved all our day," Necro said to the pilot. "Vor enyte!"

"It's nothin', mate," the gunship's pilot answered.

"I have a question, though," the sergeant carried on. "That was in no way two minutes."

"Oh, yeah," the gunner replied. "We were just kiddin' to make ya'll feel crestfallen."

"K'atini, yer bloody bugger!" Fodder said furiously. "You'll pay for that, chakaar!"

"No, he won't," Necro said calmly. "Shut it, Private; we're save, and that's all that counts."

"Now, get us to the rendezvous point," he said to the pilot. "There's still a battle going on out there, one that's needing us."

"Copy that," the pilot said and speeded the gunship up.

********************************************************************** (End of Part One, beginning of Part Two)

"Sergeant, this is Lieutenant Day," Necro's superior suddenly reported over comm, while the gunship was flying into the vast sinkhole, where Utapauns on flying dactillions and Republic gunships and gunboats fought against Separatist vulture droids in the sky. "You've just received a new drop point - the old rendezvous point is no longer accessible. We can't meet you there, but you won't need the rest of the platoon, anyway. It's an open battle now, and you'll be hitting on heavy resistance, but there are also other units from the battalion, so you're not alone. Watch your six, Sergeant, and your men. Day out."

"Uh... Copy that, sir," Sergeant Necro responded confused. What the...?!

"You got the coordinates?" he asked the pilot.

"Yes, sir, just the roofed platform over there," the other clone replied and pointed to an assembly of large platforms. Behind those platforms where caves that lead into the tunnel system, where Necro could spot blaster fire and explosions every now and then. Other gunships were landing on other platforms, quickly dropping troopers, lifting-off again and re-appearing after a few minutes with new units. On the landing pad next to their destined platform was just a LAAT/c dropping an AT-TE walker.

"Get ready to jump, we're landing now," the pilot announced and hovered the gunship over their drop zone. The paratroopers jumped off even before the vessel had landed and stormed towards the frontline, where other clones of the battalion where fighting battledroids, superbattledroids, crab droids and some other, three-meter-tall weird looking tripodal spider-droids with giant balloon-like heads, called octuparra droids.

Sergeant Necro was the last to aboard the ship, and before he had reached the ground, the gunship was already away again. In front of him were lots of troopers in usual armor, standing in defensive positions and fighting the droids in a cave ahead of them.

"Sergeant, over here," Private Doc called him. He was kneeling several meters away, next to a wounded trooper who was lying on his back, trembling heavily. "Hurry!"

Necro sprinted to the private and looked over the fallen clone, while more troopers were shot near them, every few seconds making loud cries from hits. The medic pointed him to the trooper's chest, and the sergeant could see an awful wound in the soldier's abdomen. He quickly laid his rifle away and pressed his hands on the clone's belly, so that trooper wouldn't lose too much blood. Doc got his medkit and already pulled out a bandage, when suddenly a stray blaster bolt hit his shoulder. The trooper screamed out, but stayed on his knees.

"It's just a flesh wound, sir," he replied on his sergeant's unasked question and went on to attend the fallen trooper. Necro only looked at him, and shook his head. The man's chest he had been pressing his hands on had stopped its movement only an instant ago, just as the whole body of the trooper. The reason was a small piece of shrapnel that had hit the wounded clone trooper in his waist, giving him the rest.

"Stay here," Necro ordered Doc, "treat your own wound and then move on. I don't want you to die on me just now."

The private only nodded, and Necro grabbed his rifle and stood up.

The sergeant looked at the battlefield and saw his troopers standing on the edge of the platform where it went over to the caves, defending their position. They were accompanied by several other clones, one of them carrying the rank signs of a captain. The officer looked at Necro, who nodded in acknowledgment to make an assault.

"Alright units, let's go, let's go, let's go," the captain shouted, fired a few shots at a crab droid that had come dangerously close, only hit one of its armored pincers and then sprinted forwards, right towards the muckracker. He skillfully outran the heavily armored droid's sensors, jumped on its thorax, where the machine's brain sat, and fired several precise shots into the unarmored parts of the droid. Successfully penetrating a weak spot, the shots hit the mark and the droid died down.

Meanwhile, Sergeant Necro and the other troopers stormed forward, too, but were quickly slowed down by other muckrackers that killed several clones, who were not so handy with their blasters as the captain - among them were one or two of Necro's squad, but he didn't really realize that. He was more concentrated on the tall stilt-legged octuparra droids, those more than three-meter-tall three-legged combat droids, that made a most dangerous thread, for it was incredibly hard to outrun them as the captain had did it with the crab droid; they had a 360-degree-view with their globated heads.

The captain was just destroying another muckracker, which, unlike the first one, blew up in a colorful explosion, when Necro moved on to the tall balloon-headed droid. The droid of course saw him coming and fired several yellow-glowing shots - a bit too well-aimed shots for Necro's linking, that is - at him, but the sergeant just jumped out of the fire and searched for cover behind a demolished crab droid. He took a quick look and saw the virus droid, as it was sometimes called, uncommonly moving back, not forward.

Wait... if this droid's retreating, there can be only one reason!

He hadn't had heard much about the octuparra droids, but now that he saw the tall automaton withdrawing, he remembered one of the droid's weaknesses: it was a big threat from extended ranges, but in close quarters, it was quite ineffective - just like a marksman that was trying to kill an enemy in close combat with his sniper rifle; a rather desperate and useless undertaking, for long-ranged weapons were a clear disadvantage when the hostile could come close. The few octuparra droids on the battlefield had been in the proper distance, but when the clones stormed forwards, they had to retreat, for a continuation of their advancement would have been a suicide run.

Realizing his chance, the sergeant searched the corpse of a trooper that was lying near to him for explosives - Necro himself had already run out of any kind of grenades and mines. He soon succeeded and found a small limpet mine in the trooper's belt, a weapon that was usually used against vehicles - it should work with a three-meter-tall droid, too, the paratrooper thought.

He took a quick glance at the octuparra droid, saw the line was clear, and sprinted out of his cover, approaching the targeted droid, while trying to avoid shots from either the target or other hostiles. The virus droid seemed to be realizing the thread and extended his stilt-legs to full height, what made it hard for Necro to plant the charge on the droid's main body, which was now in a height of nearly three meters. The sergeant was now less than a meter away from the droid, that tried to get away on his three legs; what, however, meant its doom: to make steps, the droid had to lower his body, and that was the just the chance Necro needed to stick the mine on the machine. After the limpet mine was planted, the sergeant quickly ran away from the droid, jumped over the demolished crab droid he had been hiding behind not too long ago, and pressed himself to the ground, awaiting the explosion.

The explosion came - with an incredibly loud 'boom' the octuparra droid blew up, in a far more intense detonation that would have been needed to take such a droid off.

Seems limpet mines do work with three-meter-tall droids, after all...

Still in cover, Necro reloaded his rifle and checked the remaining magazines. Fierfek, only two more mags to go. But, that should be no problem at all, he thought when he saw the bodies of other clone troopers lying all over the battlefield, most of them still fully armed.

One virus down, two to go, he thought as he looked over the battlefield, where still lots of droids were pushing on, among them several crab droids and, what mattered most to the paratrooper sergeant, two more octuparra droids.

Guess the same trick won't work twice, he thought. But that doesn't mean I can't bring you down, you stupid droids.

The next of the tall spider-like droids was dozens of meters away from him, but it was standing still, more or less - and that was just what Sergeant Necro needed.

He took closer looks over the battlefield, searching for a long-barreled DC-15a clone trooper rifle, while shooting a few superbattledroids and usual battledroids from his cover.

He was soon lucky, but what he found was not a DC-15a, but a DC-15x sniper rifle, carried only by specialized troopers - and two of his men were such specialized sharpshooters. Necro knew far too well what such a rifle lying loosely around on the battlefield meant - especially when he saw the corpse of a clone trooper lying near to the weapon; the fallen clone trooper was wearing the same specialized airborne-armor as he, Necro, did.

Mir'osik! That's gotta be one of my men! he thought while approaching the trooper and the rifle. The confirmation of his thoughts came when he checked the trooper's designation: it was CT-73/81-6876, or Kad, one of his best men. Necro took his inferior's helmet off and checked his pulse. There was none.

Damnit! He thought when he noticed himself losing focus and letting himself be overwhelmed by his feelings. It's not the right time to mourn the death, Trooper. Stay focused, fight as you where bred to.

He finally caught himself, set his comrade's helmet back and picked the sniper rifle up. He checked the ammo, was satisfied that there were five more rounds to go, lay down to the ground, covered by his trooper's corpse, and aimed for the octuparra droid ahead of him.

The magnified view of the scope showed him the tall droid in a nearly terrifying clearness, and he could precisely aim for the hinge of one of the droid's legs. He pulled the trigger, and in a split second, the blast hit the spot right where Necro had aimed at. The leg fell apart, and the droid, now only "standing" on two legs, lost its balance and crashed to the ground. The giant balloon-like head broke though the impact, and the octuparra droid was out of action.

One more to go...

He took out the last octuparra droid on the same way, but this time, the droid's head didn't crash, and it kept on firing everywhere. However, the sergeant didn't find this droid to be a threat anymore, so he stood up, threw the sniper rifle away, grabbed his DC-15S back and advanced to the other side of the battlefield, taking out several droids, even a crab droid, which he hit in both its photoreceptors.

Once the situation was under control, and the clone troopers had taken the position, Sergeant Necro finally made contact with his squad - the first time since they had dropped out of the gunship. Privates Doc was back and fully available again, his shoulder wound compressed by an improvised bandage. Necro's second-in-command, Zero, reported that only two troopers of Prudii Squad had died: the Privates Kad and Verd, both shot down by crab droids. The squad was rather exhausted, but the battle was long from over.

"Enjoy the little bit of rest, squad," Necro said and went away, to the captain who had taken out the first muckracker droid.

"Sergeant CT-13/23-1776, Prudii Squad, 3rd Platoon, 2nd Airborne Company reporting in, sir," he told the officer. "Awaiting orders, sir."

"At ease, Sergeant," the captain said friendly. "No need to be so firmly, here on the field. I'm Captain Zeal, and your name is...?"

"Necro, sir, Sergeant Necro," the paratrooper replied a bit confused.

"So, you're one of those paratroopers, aren't you?" Zeal said and looked over Necro's specialized armor. "I've never seen one of you before, and that, although we're in the same battalion. Weird, isn't it? Fancy fighting against those virus droids, by the way."

"Yes, sir, thanks. You've done a pretty neat job with those muckrackers there, yourself. But, all due respect, sir, shouldn't we be moving on?"

"Oh, well... You haven't heard it yet, have you?"

"Heard what, sir?"

"Ah, well... guess you haven't, then. Commander Cody just announced a few minutes ago that all troops that are not required for actual battle have to search for General Kenobi. Guess you've overheard that ..."

"And why's that? Why should we search our general? Can't we just contact him over comm?"

"Not quite. Order Sixty-Six has been announced, Sergeant. Seems you've overheard that, too."

Ah, that order. This explains everything...

"Copy that, sir," Necro said as casually as possible. He tried to conceal his true feelings, for he had always thought the Jedi were great fighters and honorable warriors. But why would they betray the Republic? And especially General Kenobi...

Know your orders, Trooper. Follow them,
Necro's "wise" side seemed to reply. Keeps you stay alive.

"Does our squad count as 'not required'?" he asked the captain.

"I dunno," Zeal replied. "It'd be best if you asked your superior."

"Will do, sir," Necro responded, nodded to the officer and went back to his squad.

"Contact the platoon, Private," he ordered Doc. "Ask for their status and orders."

"Roger that, Sarge," the trooper replied and went to work.

"Sir, the lieutenant wants to talk to you, personally," he said a short while later.

Necro nodded and pointed Doc to put him through.

"Sergeant Necro here," he reported. "What is it, sir?"

"This is Lieutenant Hett, Sergeant," the former leader of Parjai Squad surprisingly replied. "Lieutenant Day died in battle, and I've been promoted to lead the platoon. I'm with Commander Cody here, and I've got good news: the battle is over, Sergeant. We've won!"

"Congrats to your promotion, then. Is it true? Is it really over?"

"It is, Necro! But there's still something to do for you. Meet you at the rendezvous point, Sergeant. Your comm officer's got the coordinates. Lieutenant Hett out."

"Great news, squad!" Necro announced after disconnecting the commlink. "The battle's over. We're regrouping with the platoon, but it seems we still have something to do."

"Kandosii!" Fodder called out, and for one, Zero did not tell him to shut up.

Kandosii, indeed, Sergeant Necro thought, and he and his squad moved out.

**************

When they arrived at the rendezvous point, they could just see Lieutenant Hett and several other clone troopers standing in front of Commander Cody.

"... find Kenobi?" Cody asked the lieutenant.

"No, sir. No one could have survived that fall," Hett replied.

So the General is dead, then? Necro thought. What does it mean to me, anyway? I got my orders, and I've got to follow them.

"Start loading your men on the ship. Move it," Commander Cody ordered and went away, without even noticing the paratroopers squad.

"What is its, sir?" Necro asked the recently promoted lieutenant.

"We've received reports from all over the galaxy. The Separatists are defeated, we've won the war," Lieutenant Hett replied.

At a high cost, Necro though, the Order Sixty-Six in mind. Weird. The war is over and at the same time, the Jedi begin to betray the Republic.

"Let's hope not - we'll be losing our jobs, then."

He's damn right. What purpose would our lives have, if not for war?

Paratroopers! Way cool. grin

That was a great story - I'm always amazed at how everyone in the Clonetrooper thread can handle military writing with such ease. I think my head would explode if I tried to come up with all those details. tongue

I also really liked the last line. Good stuff to think about. grin

Nice action there, Dave. Some spots of grammar and such, but I know English is a second laguage and I'm amazed that someone who is actually still earning English can string such phrases together.

Very cool to have it end with Order 66 as well. happy

*performs a diving roll headfirst in to thread, huffing cause he's outta' breath...*

I'm here...C_F...finally made it...

You wouldn't believe some the action I just had to work my way through, wait; yeah you would, you wrote it. Airborne Troopers, never thought of it, very cool.

You combat scenes were really intense, and the freefall at the begining was nicely done too! You really buried yourself in the combat aspect of it and it came across really well.

At a high cost, Necro though, the Order Sixty-Six in mind. Weird. The war is over and at the same time, the Jedi begin to betray the Republic.

"Let's hope not - we'll be losing our jobs, then."

He's damn right. What purpose would our lives have, if not for war?

Great thought provoking ending too C_F!

P.S. - thanks for the advice on my own GGWW fic BTW, did a few little touch-ups from it, much appreciated.
