Title: Tatooine Messiah
Author: VaderLVR64
Characters: Anakin (Muad’Dib), Padmé, Obi-Wan
Summary: A crossover between Dune and Star Wars.
Gina
created this lovely cover for me. Thank you!
First, some words that may help you understand this story if you aren't familiar with
Dune
. These words and definitions were taken from the book
Dune
by Frank Herbert.
Battle language
– any special language of restricted etymology developed for clear-speech communication in warfare
Bene Gesserit
- the ancient school of mental and physical training established primarily for female students after the Butlerian Jihad destroyed the so-called “thinking machines” and robots.
Coriolis storm
– any major sandstorm on Arrakis
Crysknife
- the sacred knife of the Fremen on Arrakis. It is manufactured in two forms from teeth taken from dead sandworms.
Fedaykin
- Fremen death commandos; historically a group that is formed and pledged to give their lives to right a wrong.
Fremen
– the free tribes of Arrakis, dwellers in the desert.
Gom jabbar
– the high handed enemy; that specific poison needle tipped with meta-cyanide used by Bene Gesserit Proctors in the death-alternative test of human awareness
Jihad
– religious crusade; fanatical crusade
Kull Wahad
– “I am profoundly stirred!” A sincere exclamation of surprise common in the Imperium.
Kwisatz Haderach
– “Shortening of the Way.” This is the label applied by the Bene Gesserit to the
unknown
for which they sought a genetic solution: a male Bene Gesserit whose organic mental powers would bridge space and time.
Mahdi
– in the Fremen messianic legend, “The One Who Will Lead Us to Paradise.”
Muad’Dib
– the adapted kangaroo mouse of Arrakis, a creature associated in the Fremen earth-spirit mythology with a design visible on the planet’s second moon. This creature is admired by Fremen for its ability to survive in the open desert.
Naib
– one who has sworn never to be taken alive by the enemy; traditional oath of a Fremen leader.
Ornithopter
– any aircraft capable of sustained wing-beat flight in the manner of birds. Commonly called ‘thopter.
Sardaukar
– the soldier fanatics of the Padishah Emperor
Shai-Hulud
– Sandworm of Arrakis, the “Old Man of the Desert,” “Old Father Eternity,” and “Grandfather of the Desert.”
Shaitan
– Satan
Sietch
– (Fremen) “Place of assembly in times of danger.” Because the Fremen lived so long in peril, the term came by general usage to designate any cave warren inhabited by one of their tribal communites.
Sihaya
– (Fremen) the desert springtime with religious overtones implying the time of fruitfulness and “the paradise to come.”
Stillsuit
– body-enclosing garment invented on Arrakis. Its fabric is a micro-sandwich fabric designed to reclaim as potable water the ambient moisture discharged within it by the breath of its occupants
Usul
- (Fremen) “The base of the pillar.”
Tatooine Messiah
”I was chosen… Perhaps at birth…certainly before I had much say in it. I was chosen.” Frank Herbert,
Dune Messiah
He had come to realize that to know the future was a terrible burden. He had been born a creature of prophecy, his very existence foretold in a past so distant that even
he
could not see it. He was the Chosen One, the one the witches had dreamed of and the Jedi had claimed. He knew he had proven to be far less, and far more, than any of them expected.
With a sigh, the man who had once been Anakin Skywalker closed his eyes and let the winds of his capital city whip his cloak about him. The fierce desert winds kicked up sand that blasted at his face and hands, though pain meant little to him any more. Pain was his constant companion, and he found it almost comforting in its familiarity.
Behind him, he sensed his guards standing absolutely still, their faces betraying no expression. They wore no stillsuits, not even here on the balcony with the heat of the sands radiating out at them. They were hard desert men who still felt ill at ease without the slickness of their ancient garb. The Fedaykin were anonymous, menacing figures, their mere presence enough to dissuade all but the most determined would-be assassins.
Those still bent on killing the Emperor soon found he was no spoiled politician, used to soft living. The last sight those unfortunate fools saw was a handsome young man standing over them with a crimson blade in one hand, a crysknife in the other, and startling yellow eyes blazing his contempt for them as they drew their last breath.
“Your Majesty?” The soft voice came from his inner chamber. It was the Imperial Medic. From the sound of her voice, it was not good news, but he had known that. He had known before all of these events were set into motion. Anakin allowed himself one sharp moment of grief and then put the feeling aside, as he had so many other emotions.
Taking a deep breath, he turned and arranged his features into the mask he always wore for them. He offered the people the Emperor that they expected and needed. “Yes,” he gave his leave for the medic to speak with a vague gesture of his durasteel hand. He no longer covered it with a glove, and he had refused a synthskin transplant. There was no need to hide who he was –
what
he was.
“My Lord,” the medic said in a hesitant and frightened voice.
“My son is dead,” he said quietly. “I know.”
I know too much! And too little.
There was no doubt in his voice. How could there be when he had seen it come to pass so many times in his visions?
A pause from the medic. “Yes, my Lord.”
My heir is gone,
he thought to himself. It suddenly seemed a horrible thing that his first thought should have been of his heir and not his son. That was Muad’Dib thinking, the Emperor, not the father. Now both of his children were gone, the little unnamed girl who had died before she drew her first breath, and Luke – both dead.
He knew he should go to Padmé, comfort her if she would let him, but he could not bring himself to do it. The part of him that was still Anakin needed to mourn alone, and the part of him that was Maud’Dib knew he must put aside his personal sorrow. He had always known that this son would not live to ascend the Imperial Throne. He had hardened his heart against this agony long ago.
It had been no surprise to feel Luke’s presence in the Force flicker out and die.
All things die.
It was Master Obi-Wan’s voice, an echo from a past that no longer seemed to belong to him.
Suddenly Muad’Dib realized that the medic still stood before him, tears welling up in her own eyes. He found himself strangely touched by her devotion to his son. She had cared for him many long months – his entire life. Now that life was over. “You may go,” the Emperor said, then he paused. “I want to thank you for taking such good care of Luke. It meant a lot to the Empress…and to me.”
The medic gave a jerky bow of her head, her teeth digging into her lip just shy of drawing blood. The Emperor was alone, left to mourn the loss of his only child.
******************************
Far away from Arrakis, on another desert world, Obi-Wan Kenobi paused in his meditations. He felt that slight disturbance in the Force that told him the son of Skywalker was dead. Turning his face toward the twins suns that were just now setting over a distant ridge, the Jedi Knight let a tear escape him.
He had hoped that young Luke would prove to be the key to saving the father. He had seen Anakin only once since the child’s birth, it had been a strange and awkward meeting between men who had once been brothers but now were not quite enemies. He had expressed his hopes to Anakin, and the young man had merely given him a sad smile as he shook his head. “That is not this child’s role to play,” he said simply.
At the time, Obi-Wan had taken his words to mean that his former apprentice saw no redemption on the road ahead. Now he wondered if he had foreseen his son’s death. Anakin had always had the Vision. The use of the spice had merely magnified his natural gifts.
The ways of the Force were mysterious, he reminded himself, trying to find something within his heart that he might call
hope.
And failing.
****************************************
”She gives water to the dead.” Frank Herbert,
Dune
Padmé sat in perfect silence, keeping her vigil over the body of her dead son. He rested in the royal cradle, the arms of the Skywalkers emblazoned above him. Luke was still and pale and perfect. Reaching out with one hand, she brushed her fingers against his cool, white cheek.
“It’s almost your feeding time,” she whispered. The ache in her breasts was a poignant reminder that her son should be eating now. She wanted to plead with the gods to wake him from his unnatural slumber and let him cry out for her, to feel the strong pull of his mouth, the softness of his flesh against hers. He merely lay there, as quiet as the death which had claimed him.
Getting to her feet, she tucked his blanket more securely about him. He did not stir at her ministrations, his eyes did not flicker and no grin appeared. He was beyond her now.
They had wanted to take him away hours ago, but she was waiting – waiting for Anakin, or even Muad’Dib, to come and see their dead son one last time. To Anakin she had given a son, to Muad’Dib she had given an heir. Which one would miss Luke more, she wondered.
The room was dark now, and night ruled the desert outside. The nocturnal nomads of the dunes were scurrying about as if the death of the Imperial heir meant little to them. Padmé wished briefly that she was a desert creature, too, so that she would not be brittle with her agony.
There was the sound of a door opening and she heard the footfalls of her husband’s big boots. She turned and met his luminous blue-on-blue eyes. At least they were not alight with a sickly yellow fire, she thought gratefully. It was Anakin then, who came to mourn.
Rising, she took his head. “He’s gone,” she said in a dazed voice, like a man who has received a mortal wound in battle yet stays on his feet by some unknown means.
Tenderly, he brushed away her tears. “I know, my love.”
She stared up at him, her eyes as brown as the day he had first seen her. Even here, she did not partake of the spice, and as Empress she could request foods from across the Imperium so even her diet was free of it. Some whispered that it was unnatural that the Emperor’s wife would not have the eyes of the Fremen,
his
adopted people. Anakin, however, understood her reticence. It would make no difference in their fates, so he let her have her way in this small matter. Blue eyes or brown, she was his own, his desert spring.
They stared at each other for a long moment, and she searched for something in his eyes. Then she pulled away with a gasp. “You knew!” she hissed, a cold and angry look twisting her features into something ugly.
Turning away from her, away from their dead child, his head lowered to his chest. His broad shoulders shuddered slightly, but he did not answer. Her hands gripped his tunics as she moved him to face her. “You knew he’d die and yet you let me go on hoping…” her voice broke on a sob and she threw herself into his arms. “How could you?”
Of course, he had known. The future was laid out before him in all its terrifying glory. There was so much pain and death on their path that the loss of this child was but a taste of the bitterness that awaited them. He could not tell her the truth, could not bear to reveal that this was but the first of many heartaches. There was hope on that path as well, if he but had the strength to grasp it. He wavered even now, caught between his choices, his destinies.
“How could you let me go on hoping he’d live?” Padmé cried against his chest.
His arms wrapped around her tightly, as if he could take all of her pain into his own soul and free her of the awful burden. When he spoke, his voice was no more than a rough whisper of sound. “How could I deny you a mother’s hope?” he asked. He tilted up her chin so that she could see the pain of the unbearable choice he had had to make. “Without hope, the heart dies, my love.” His tone was tender, and then he bent down and caught her tears on his tongue. He drank up her grief and bitterness, took it into himself.
When she calmed somewhat, he took her hand and together they make the dreadful journey to his son’s cradle. They looked upon their child for the last time. Reverently, he brushed his hand along Luke’s blond curls. There were no words to convey what Anakin felt, and Muad’Dib had done with his mourning long ago.
Resolutely, the Emperor took his wife’s hand and walked away from the cradle holding the body of their lost child.

I have to admitt that I really hate Dune with a passion! I always found it depressing, so please don't take it personally if I don't reply agian to this story. It has nothing to do with you and everything to do with Dune.
Even though Dune is not my favorite, I just had to reply and tell you what a beautifully written post this is, and that you did a wonderful job of intertwining the two worlds. I can easily picture Anakin standing their on Arrakis with his freeman guards behind him. You did a great job of capturing the essence of Dune while maintaining a star wars component.
Again, really beautiful!

Wonderful job blending the two paradigms here. I am a Dune lover as well as a Star Wars lover, so this is great. Looking forward to seeing where you take this. I sure hope you write professionally, because your writing is terrific.

My first thought: Dang. Another cross over. Next!
My second thought: Hmm... Dune/Star Wars, Arrakis/Tatooine, Kwizach Haderach/Chosen One, Seeing the Future.... maybe this deserves a glance. This could work.
My third though: Oh, VaderLVR64 is doing it... this should be interesting.
So I read it.
My fourth thought: so which one of your other stories should suffer to make you write this one faster!
An excellent amalgamation with the beginning of characters that are up to your usual standards: utterly compelling and believable. I especially like the Anakin/Padme interaction over Luke. The hardness/compassion of Anakin's heart when confronted with an unsolvable delimma of Luke's impending death.
As you can probably suspect, I am eagerly awaiting your next installment.

Wow, what a most lovely crossover. Your writing fits them in so perfectly. I feel for all the characters, the stoism of Anakin. How can anyone think to know the future a gift? Padme's ache at losing her children and anger at her husband's not telling her of her son's fate before hand, though he was very right in his reasonings.
Even Obi-Wan's tear shed was so haunting.
MIght I ask to be PM'd when you do update?

*wipes away a tear* How tragic, both twins are dead now...
Mama Vader,
this is an excellent beginning! I will admit I never really got into
Dune
beyond the TV movie miniseries and reading
Dune Messiah
, but I'm still very intrigued! Especially since I saw you writing it!
So Anakin told Obi-Wan that it was not Luke's task to bring out the good in him...
Whose task is it, then? Perhaps another child of Anakin and Padmé? Interesting...
Again, great job! Can't wait for more!

Ooo, very interesting! I liked the part about not hiding his durasteel hand just as Paul didn't accept artificial eyes. All the parallels are really well done.
