----- 19 BBY -----

Camren Fuhl blinked and frowned in deep confusion. The recall beacon from Coruscant, the call to return to the temple that he'd been racing towards for the past standard hour, had suddenly and quite unexpectedly dropped. He jiggled the switch, flipping the receiver in the crowded cockpit of his ship several times over the wailing protests of his single, small passenger. The cessation of the sound had awoken his fussy charge, but he didn't have time to deal with that at this exact second. Something had to be wrong. Something -was- wrong, as the call clearly indicated to begin with. Just as he reached to give the unit a firm smack, just in case of a loosened wire... or so he told himself, it blared to life again.

Except the code was wrong. The signal now broadcast an alert to avoid Coruscant at all costs. The young Knight went cold, chilled to his very marrow as the change slotted neatly into the creeping dread he'd been trying to suppress since... no.

Lifting the infant in his arms, he met her reddened, teary brown eyes with his own. "Shhhhh... Silence, little one..." A nudge, a calming touch to the bright light of the child's awareness, and her cries ceased. One arm cradling the sleeping babe, the Jedi's free hand flew over the controls of the tiny starfighter. "Course change, Scorch." he commed to the astromech droid nestled in the wing. "Anywhere but here."

*****

"Anywhere" turned out to be the equivalent of a galactic rest stop. The Nexus, as it was called, was nothing so grand as the name might imply, just a largish asteroid floating in a ruined system where several of the hyperspace lanes favored by the mining conglomerates merged. It hadn't seen much traffic since the system's ore wealth had been tapped out, well before the Seperatists began their attacks on other isolated interests.

Camren nodded a bit after absorbing the information and dismissed it, comming to the droid on his left wing. "Decanting to normal space now." He pulled the lever one-handed, watching as the streaks of starlight resolved into the normal pin pricks of sub-light space. The child in his other arm slept on still. "Get us down, Scorch. I doubt they've got assists, and my hands are a little full."

The droid was more than capable of the operation, and took over communications with the Nexus Control. He let that concern fade from his mind as he turned to gaze down at the one nestled in his embrace. While it wasn't the case the galaxy over, the child's parents themselves had contacted the Jedi Temple. The woman's own sister had been taken to the Order, and the daughter had proven at least as strong. They could view releasing the infant to the Jedi as placing her in the custody of her aunt, though it was likely that the two relatives would be kept apart. Knight Fuhl had been closest... he and his unit were returning from a successful campaign... so the duty to collect the child and bring her to the Temple had been his. He'd sent his Clones ahead and set out in his ARC, figuring on a quick trip with firepower just in case. He'd given his promise that the girl would be safe and looked after well a mere five minutes before the first beacon call from Coruscant.

Which left the both of them here, on a hollow asteroid-turned-way station, far from the Creche and the Order. The young Knight firmed his jaw and wrapped the infant's swaddling tighter as he felt Scorch fire up the landing repulsors. "The Jedi keep their promises, little one. Somehow."

It wasn't until his second night on Nexus that Camren Fuhl received his answer to the question inherent in both the call and warning from the Jedi Temple. Everything on the hollowed asteroid was in low supply, including news, and the Holonet didn't stream to the forlorn outpost in anything but fits and bursts.

It was when the young Knight was trying to convince his tiny charge that the reconstituted protein nutrient powder mix was actually meant to stay inside her small stomach that the broadcast came through of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine's latest speech. He turned up the volume on the antiquated holo-unit in the dingy rented room, hoping for good news, any sign that he could return to Coruscant and his fellow Jedi.

"... and the Jedi Rebellion has been foiled. The remaining Jedi will be hunted down and defeated. Any collaborators will suffer the same fate."

Shock froze him motionless and glued his blue eyes to the display as those hopes were brutally dashed. Forgotten was the make-shift bottle he'd been trying to urge on the infant girl. Jedi... Rebellion? Impossible! It wasn't true, it couldn't be true! He missed the next few sentences under the babe's sudden screaming howl. It was the only thing that jarred his attention away, focused his reeling mind from the incomprehensible to the necessary task of soothing the child. She subsided into wet whimpers just as the speech concluded to triumphant applause and cheering.

"... into the first Galactic Empire, for a safe and secure society which I assure you will last for ten thousand years. An empire that will continue to be ruled by this august body, and a sovereign ruler chosen for life... An empire ruled by the majority... Ruled by a new constitution..."

The weight of those words crashed down on the Jedi Knight, shattering the universe around him. There would be no return, there was no 'home', and he was now a wanted man... with a child he barely had any idea how to care for. He might be the only one left. Fear, grief, hopelessness, anger... these began to well up within Camren, a dark tide threatening to overtake him. Perhaps it would have, at that, had the flailing of hard little fists and a second piercing cry not brought him also the memory of his recent promise. He swallowed hard, pushing back at the darkness and stroking the infant girl's blonde fuzz of hair.

"Just you and me, then, little one." His voice choked. He closed his eyes, attempting to spread his awareness and catch a hint of the station's mood. It was as he had expected. Many had already heard, and soon they would piece together those venomness words of the self-proclaimed Emperor and the robes and weapon that marked him for what he was. It was no longer safe for them here. He gently laid the child back onto the bed, shhhing her gently as she started to protest. He moved quickly, stripping down to plain tunic and pants. His lightsaber he tucked inside his belt and bundled the babe into his folded cloak. Her in on arm and a shabby, second-hand pack over his shoulder, he strode from the room, from the familiarity of his past and into a wider, unknown future.

I love how this story is going so far. Camren's sense of dread and desperation after learning the truth is powerful. One can only imagine how many other Jedi may be in a similar predicament (minus the added stress of an infant). I wonder if the locals will tip off the Empire? I'd hate to see Vader on his tail. I will definitely continue keeping an eye on this story!

I'm glad you like it so far. There is a possibility that young Camren will encounter older and wiser heads, but... always in motion, the future is. wink

Thanks! I'm thinking right at this point Vader is a bit busy adjusting to the Suit, but he's not the only thing a Jedi has to fear intertrilogy. Unlike Jedi without small charges, Camren can't go rushing off to hunt down his own death at the end of that red saber.

The Nexus was a miner's town, with a simplicity of design and little regard for aesthetics. It left very little in the way of cover or protection for a fugative Jedi. Permacrete and durasteel barracks and buildings could certainly look shabby and run-down, but they were made to last. No crumbling ruins here, and the streets were broad slabs of the same. Maybe if he could make it to the underside of the town's plane, or to the 'roof' of the hollow asteroid's interior, he could find a cave or a bolt hole, but the artificial gravity generator unfortunately was in much better repair than the holonet receivers.

Camren's thoughts churned as he sought out the docks and the ARC fighter he'd come in. He could only hope that no one had tampered with the hyperspace ring he'd had to leave in orbit. He shifted the bundled babe in his arms and forced himself to walk at a normal pace. Fear and panic led to the Dark Side, and he pushed down at the negative emotion and strove to still his racing mind. No, nothing wrong, nothing to see here, just a young man with a baby who had a Jedi starfighter. Situation perfectly normal. It was at least the aura he attempted to portray, reaching out with an ever so subtle nudge of the Force to aid the illusion.

It almost worked. Even little Breena was quiet, allowing him to concentrate further on their escape. However, halfway across the docks to his waiting ship, four rough-looking spacers stepped into his path.
"Well, well... look it what we got here, boys." The smallest of the quartet was the one with the mouth. The other three humans shifted position to range around the Jedi, blasters in hand. "Looks like it's payday."

Camren followed their movements more through the Force than with his eyes, focusing on their 'spokesman' while ghosting a slight, confused smile over his face. Did they want a bribe to let him pass, or did they know and think that the Emperor would reward them if they captured him? Neither was good, as he'd already spent the last of what credits he did have on food and fuel. He shifted the arm he held the child with, nudging his lightsaber closer to the opening of his tunic. She was still quiet, for now.

"I think you have me confused with someone else, gentlemen." Camren tried another smile. "I'm not the paymaster."

One of the men behind him barked a short laugh and sneered "Got a naive one here, Boss. Want me to -explain- it to him?" The thug twisted his head a bit and cracked his own neck and the others snickered. The 'boss', shorter by a foot than his underlings, shook his head and stepped closer to the young Jedi.

Breena started to fuss, kicking at the robe wound around her. The four men just leered bigger. He had to admit that he did look an easy mark, with the child in tow. Maybe he could get out of this without a fight, since it was now clear it was credits they wanted and not him. Camren lifted his right hand slightly, gesturing with two fingers at the head man. "You don't want my money or my ship. I'm free to go now." He bent his will on the shorter man through the Force.

The boss man blinked once with his good eye, and started to step out of the way. "I don't want yer money, or yer ship. Yer ...." The gang leader shook his shaggy head, eye widening "... Yer a Jedi! Shoot 'im, shoot 'im now!" he ordered, wheeling back rapidly as he drew his own blaster.

The sinking feeling Camren had feel to his toes. Before the boss had finished his order, the Knight had lauched into motion, drawing his lightsaber from his tunic and igniting the sun-yellow blade. All three blaster bolts were neatly deflected as the child in his embrace let loose a howl of protest. Letting momentum carry him, his glowing blade severed Rafe's blaster within millimeters of taking the thug's hand with it. He eyed the remaining three weapons over the child's upset cries, "I do not wish to harm you."

For a tense, teetering moment, the four extortionists considered their options, and that was all the time the Jedi needed to act. Summoning up the Force once more, he propelled himself into an inhumanly high leap, clearing his assailants just as the remaining three blasters fired on his former position. Without his mass to stop the lethal laser bolts, two of the four fell to the dock's floor, the boss shot dead center and one of his goons effectively disarmed and now missing a good hunk of his upper arm. The third bolt tore harmlessly into the distant wall.

The young Knight landed in a solid stance facing the last armed opponent. He quirked his brow, the light of his blade casting a yellow glow across his tanned face. He hesitated, just a second, and the man dropped his gun from shaking fingers and tore off in the opposite direction, Rafe hot on his heels.

Breena's wailing followed their retreat. Camren barely glanced after them, extinquishing his blade and dashing the few yards to his fighter. He reached out with the Force and pressed the hatch release steps before his arrival, and lept into the cockpit with surprising agility, given his hampered state. Moving quickly, he strapped the child to him under the flight harness and shouted back at the R2 unit. "Come on, Scorch... time to jet."

The droid's answering tootle was barely heard over the infant as the Jedi closed the hatch and took the controls. "Nexus Control, this is dock 337 requesting clearance." he commed over, and tried to shhhh Breena while hitting the repulsors. "It's alright, little one... let me fly, huh?"

The small fighter lifted away from the docking bay and turned toward the open blast doors at a good clip. "Control," he shouted above the infant, "requesting clearance for dock 337..."

"Negative, Dock 337. Please return to the landing platform and shut down your vessel. Stand down and prepare for arrest."

The young Jedi groaned softly. Word got back fast, or the cameras were working. "I'm afraid I can't do that, Control." Not that he was going to be left with many choices soon. The gap between the blast doors was closing swiftly. He might just have enough time.... "Scorch, all power to the forward thrusters. All of it, hear me?" He barely registered the toodle-dweet response as the small fighter surged forward. He raced for the narrowing slot, sweat beading on his brow.

Suddenly the tiny ship jolted hard, nearly jerking the controls from his hands and elliciting a sharper wail from the infant. "Scorch! Aft shields!" He let loose a curse, one of the more colorful phrases he'd picked up during the war. A quick scan revealed a trio improvising a mining laser and preparing for another shot. He stretched his senses and felt it fire, angling into a sixty degree tilt and evading the blast, and just as swiftly back on plane. He burst out into space just a hair's breath from scraping the chrome off Scorch's domed top.

"Shhhh, little one. Let's just find that hyper-ring. Scorch?" He commed the droid, freeing a hand to stroke the child's head. "Plot a jump for... " For where? He scanned his sensors for other ships while he tried to think. Somewhere on the fringes... and then he remembered. "Tatooine. Once we get the ring, set us for Tatooine, Scorch." That'd do. Maybe that junk dealer Knight Skywalker mentioned when they were padawans together would give him a good deal on a slightly used Jedi Fighter.

This could get interesting... two exiled Jedi on Tatooine with two young infants to train...

It’s good to see that even with an infant in his arms he’s able to fight off four slightly weak-minded thugs.

Good update! happy

Thanks for the encouragement! And yeah, they weren't all that much of a challenge. Order 66 proved that the element of surprise can be a Jedi's undoing, but those four toughs just didn't have that.

----- Dune Sea, Tatooine -----

It was a mistake to land outside any of the desert planet's spaceports, he knew that now. Now that it was too late. His lips twisted into a wry smile beneath the scrap of cloth masked his face from the blasting flurry of the sandstorm. He lifted a fold of his cloak just enough to glimpse the child safely nestled in the shelter of his arms, and for once asleep all on her own. The astromech droid at his side whistled a plaintive note, and the young Jedi chuckled lightly. "The storm has to end sometime." he answered, adding silently to himself "Doesn't it?"

If the storm's direction didn't change, they'd be alright in the hasty lean-to he'd rigged out of the wings of his starfighter. He'd lowered the body of the craft from it's landing gear and tented the wings against it while Scorch performed some makeshift welds. It wasn't sand-tight, but the whole arrangement should hold together. So much for the resale value, though. He gave a long sigh, crystal blue eyes settling on the long scorch mark left from their escape from Nexus. How ironic would it be if this planet did Emperor Palpatine's work for him?

Camren caught himself in that dark thought and forced himself back. Fear was of the dark side, and he couldn't afford to indulge. Even it's passing shadow had effect: Breena stirred in her warm nest, aggitated. Their bond was growing at an alarming rate. Whatever else the force-strong infant would become, she was especially empathic. How he'd be able to teach her, he didn't know. He was only a few years past being a Padawan himself, and certainly wouldn't have been given his own so soon by the Council.

He shhhed softly at the babe, rocking her gently as he sought to clear his mind. He was worried about teaching her, and he barely knew anything about caring for her. He would have to trust instinct, and the Force. He shifted his seating slightly, trying for as much comfort as could be had in the rocky sand, and then deliberately dismissed the small jabs and aches. It was the first step. "Scorch, keep watch." he ordered as he pushed away the howling winds from his consciousness, sinking deeper into meditation.

"There is no emotion; there is peace.", he subvocalized, one by one releasing his fears and conceerns to the winds outside. "... no ignorance, knowledge... no passion, serenity...." He gathered to him instead his many memories of the deep quiet peace of stillness. The first instructions of his Master, the serenity of first achieving the state on his own and released a long sigh, surrendering his breath. Finally the sole presence of the warm child remained. That, too, he attempted to push from his mind.

All his concentration was nearly undone, the physical world almost crashing back down when that warmth refused to depart his awareness. Breena clung to him, not with the small grasp of her tiny hands, but with that which she was, a shining light in the ever darker Force. He stumbled, flailing mentally in the timelessness of the inner mind, almost missing the thought that whispered to him, "There is no obstacle: there is another path."

Understanding flooded the young Jedi, surging over both his light and the child's. Instead of seperating, his will embraced her own and he flowed past into the Force, carrying them both into the epiphany of his meditations.

How long they remained there, the huddled Jedi and the sleeping child, only Scorch knew the count of. The storm had abated, leaving the golden sand of Tatooine mounded about the shelter. The droid dweedled worriedly, rolling closer to his Master, and then spun his silver dome and hooted in alarmed surprise as a small sand-slide wooshed under the metal starfighter wings and a hooded face shadowed the entrance.

"My, what have we here?" spoke a warm, deep voice.

It’s cool to see how the infant has attached herself to the Jedi so soon, kind of a natural paternal bond.
