Luna_Nightshade: Nope, not good at all! Muwahahahaha....

MoeTharen: Ord Mantell is not exactly the bright center of the universe. wink I actually got out a blue lightbulb to see what things would look like under a blue star. It -is- depressing! And oh, yes. A very evil cliffhanger!

obsessedwithSW: Oh, there's a perfectly logical explanation... besides, I don't recall Vader using Force Lightening, unless it was in some real obscure EU. peace

PadwanKayla: Thanks! I have to confess, I pitted Nala against a Falleen purely for my own amusement. batting

You would have to leave us with a cliffie, wouldn't you? wink

I loved the exchange between Nala and the Falleen. The device she used to block the pheromones was a great touch. I can see why you'd want to pit her up against him. I wonder where Revek will decide to settle?

Okay, I was trying really hard to wait until I had the entire ending written before I posted, so as not to leave yet another evil cliffie... but too bad! whistling devil

"Don't move." a deep lisping voice ordered.

Captain Nala froze at the sinister tone coming from behind her. She didn't recognize the voice, but she could sense the waves of smug satisfaction radiating from the sentient. She grimaced to herself and gritted out, "Mind telling me why not?"

Her answer came in the form of the one she'd given that slimy Falleen earlier, namely the end of a firearm pressed between her shoulderblades. Sibilant speech followed the pointed gesture, "No. Clear enough, smuggler?"

"Yes." she hissed through her teeth, catching just a glimpse of the smooth greenish hand that jerked her own blaster from it's holster. "Just take it and go." she asked, knowing that the credit case she held was empty. She wasn't stupid enough to walk around with that much cash in plain view. Hopefully this idiot would be distracted enough for her to disarm him when he discovered that.

The laughter her assailant produced sounded like mucus slapping wet duracrete. "Keep your credits, female. I'm after bigger pay."

The sinking feeling in her gut grew five-fold. She forced her best smile across her face as she was patted down in a search for hidden weapons and consciously escalated her level of pheromones to a considerable degree, and prayed the humanoid behind her had a nose. "Maybe we could talk about this somewhere a little more... private?" she murmured in a lanquid tone and shifted her hip into the hand that was just relieving her of her hold-out blaster. "I'm sure we could come toa mutually beneficial agreement..."

Nala's attacker grabbed her arm and jerked her roughly around to face him. The Zeltron only had the merest part of a second to entertain the idea of success before the bottom fell out. The bald, lamprey-faced sentient before her wasn't in any way moved by her infamous Zeltron allure that she could sense through sight or empathy. His skin was a sick shade of olive and his circular mouth had far too many teeth. If he had nostrils, they weren't in view, and his ears were the simple holes of a reptile. He tipped her chin upwith the barrel of his blaster and grimaced a nasty smile.

"I think your ship will do just fine."

-----

A sense of unease nagged at Revek Faidhe as he waited for the elderly produce vendor to count out his change. It had dogged his steps for the last few intersections, but another glance around didn't reveal anything to the young Jedi. Even Silence was starting to grow fretful, her tiny hands plucking and twisting at the fabric of her carrier and his shirt as she gave an anxious whimper.

The old woman's shaking fingers dropped the credit chits into his hand with a toothy smile. "Looks like someone's getting hungry, young man. You be sure and mash up those Ithorian tree fruits real good, hear?"

"Yes, ma'am." Revek murmured politely, returning her smile as he thrust the money into his pocket and took up the sack of fruit. An instant later found him clutching at the edge of the produce stall as the unease became a full-blown alarm claxon. Silence took up the surge of danger with a loud wail, bursting into tears. Iit was all he could do for the next few moments to attempt to comfort the infant, fend off the fruit seller's inquiries, and leave the area before any more attention focused his way.

-----

Captain Nala could no longer feel her fingers. That pretty much proved that the stun cuffs latched around her wrists were fully operational. It took a good deal of will to resist testing her bonds further, but unconsciousness was not a state that she could well afford in her current situation.

She glared daggers at the reptilian bounty hunter, her seething rage fueled further by her young son's terror. He'd been smart enough to hide himself aboard the ship, had probably been watching when the lamprey-faced scumbag had pulled this stunt, and now he was very anxious and scared. One more thing her assailant would pay for when she got free.

Her faint hope that the mercenary would disregard her fallen droid and leave Mangle where he'd fallen had been swiftly extinquished. Whatever his name was, this guy was good. With his blaster in the small of her back, she'd been forced flip the droid's reset and clear the disruption from the ion burst. Now the mechanical stevedore loomed in the corner, powered down and unable to serve as a tacit warning to Revek. The Jedi certainly wouldn't have overlooked the down droid as 'situation normal'.

Sitting here bound and fuming wasn't going to warn him to stay away, either. She just hadn't thought of anything yet. The hunter had been most careful to keep from leaving any trace, anything out of order as he had herded her through her vessel and pried behind every latch and door large enough to hold a human. Fortunately, he wasn't so interested in those small enough for an eight-year-old boy.

Nala had to force herself to resist biting the olive-drabbed clawed hand he thrust into her face next. As it was, an involuntary jerk of her arms caused the tingling numb of the energized binders to shoot up to her elbows. She recognized her own comlink in those taloned fingers and glared up at the alien.

The tip of one claw firmly on the switch, Ripper instructed "You will tell your passengers to return, Captain." He emphasised his command with the barrel of his blaster, settling it against the hollow above her sternum. Nala sneered up towards the bounty hunter.

"Go kriff yourself."

A moment later her vision swam, nearly blacking, and then the pain hit. The brute leveled his weapon back into place and the Zeltron felt a trickle of what must be blood start to slide down the side of her face. The numbness had also increased to her shoulders. She sensed a surge of fright from her hidden child, knowing he'd felt the shadow of the blow she'd been dealt. Fury helped her beat back the ache in her left temple.

"Don't even think about stunning yourself." the Dashade advised in his wet, menacing lisp. "I'm patient. You'll wake up. How many limbs you'll be missing when you do, though, is up to you." He thrust the comm unit back in her face, "Now talk." The device cracked to life with an edge of static, followed by a familiar, masculine "Hello?"

Nala fixed him with a black glower, and didn't see another choice for the moment. But maybe....

-----

"Hello, darling!" Nala's familiar voice lilted from his comlink. Oh, Force, the woman just never gave up. She could make him blush just by opening her mouth. He smothered his put-upon groan and gathered Silence closer to him as he continued to navigate the bustling walkways of the main spaceport, still driven by an icy stab of danger.

"What is it, Captain?" he asked, trying to keep the tension from his own speech. He still hadn't identified the threat his connection to the Force was screaming about yet.

"You left one of your bags behind, handsome. Going to come get it?"

That brought the young Jedi up short. Of course he'd left their luggage at the ship, considering he and Silence were returning for dinner, and he hadn't figured out where they were going next yet. He gave his comlink a quizzical look. "Nala, I thought we..." His words were swiftly cut off.

"Oh, I know, love... but I promise I'll be good. Smuggler's honor. Just come get it?"

Revek's puzzled frown cleared with realization. Someone must be listening... someone she didn't want to know that he'd planned to return anyway. The danger that had been hounding him found focus and crystalized around that thought. "Uh, " he began in relunctance he didn't at all feel, "Fine. I'll be right there."

He closed the link and clipped the comlink back to his belt, muttering to the infant as if it would comfort her fussing. "I have a bad feeling about this." He scanned the crowd, and felt a surge of relief as his blue eyes lit upon an idling swoop and it's rider.

"Why don't you let me borrow your ride?" Revek Faidhe suggested with Force-born persuasion after striding over.

"Sure, go ahead and borrow my ride." the stunned young man replied, sliding off the swoop with a confused expression.

In an instant, the Jedi was mounted and speeding off, calling back "Thanks!" to the poor owner who was now shouting and gesturing behind him with shocked anger.

Date Posted: 3/15/06 4:17pm Subject: RE: Silence - Post RotS, OCs, Cameos - Completed 3/15!
Here it is, the final installment of episode I of my OCs adventures. 20732 words in a month and a half!

I hope you've enjoyed it whether you've commented or lurked. If you wish to be on the PM list for the next installment, please let me know!

Also, I'm entertaining title ideas for this episode. It turned out rather less focused on Silence as the story expanded to multiple installments! I think it needs a fitting title!

"Okay," the young man whispered to his small charge after abandoning the swoop five berths from Captain Nala's freighter, "Part the first... hiding you." Safe places for stray infants were few and far between in a busy spaceport. After an anxious scan of his surroundings, he spied a somewhat remotely reasonable place to leave the infant. There looked to be a good niche just to the side of the control station for the coolant recharge system.

Working quickly, the Jedi knelt down and shed Silence's carry-sling and his own shirt. He used the fabrics to make a nest for the blonde infant, shhing and cooing to her in an attempt to sooth her protests at being put down as he worked. "It's going to be okay, little one... don't fuss. You just have to stay here for a little while."

Silence wasn't convinced and expressed herself with high-pitched whimpers and failing limbs as the Jedi knotted Kenobi's call beacon into the hem of her tunic. With the danger awaiting him aboard the freighter, he couldn't chance the Force-strong child's life. If the worst befell him, he kindled some small hope that whomever found the child would accidently activate the signal. He was certain that Master Kenobi would find her.

He leaned in to brush a kiss on the top of her downy head and whispered as he drew on the Force, "I'm sorry, youngling, but I have to help Nala. Stay here, stay safe..." Revek's touch caressed her brow, and the infant's distress quieted into the impelled suggestion of sleep. After tucking his shirt around her, he rose to his feet and drew the hilt of his lightsaber from it's concealing pocket.

"Part the second... " he murmured to himself as he strode towards the ship. He paused for a moment at the entrance hatch and extended his senses through the Force and into the rugged vessel. Nala's presence shone bright with her fury and he sensed a terrified Raanan a brief distance from the Zeltron woman. There was no one else save for a glimmering of a third being. When he tried to probe the faint shadow further, it was if his senses simply slid off and past. Blocking him? He frowned deeply at the thought. This was going to be harder than he'd imagined.

Unsurprisingly, the hatch was not locked. After all, whoever that slippery presence was, it had wanted him to come. The reinforced panel quietly slide open at the touch of his palm to reveal an empty corridor. He slipped inside and sealed the hatch in his wake, following the Zeltron Captian's fury as his guide.

-----

Slender stripes of light spashed over Raanan's pink face as he tried to peer out the vent slits of the ventilation shaft. He'd never been so scared in his entire life as he was right now. He'd never felt his mother feel as afraid as she was now, beneath the currant of her anger. The boy could tell she was trying to hide her fear, but they were too attuned for that.

With a helpless panic, he stayed scrunched up inside the metal shaft. In one hand he clutched a purloined hydrospanner like an amulet against his fear and tried not to move, lest the slightlest wriggle cause a betraying noise. Even the sound of his breath was too loud in his own ears.

After what seemed ages, Raanan sensed a third presence radiating charged concern over an inner core of calm. Something passed before the venting and blocked the light, and his heart leapt up into his throat. The boy held his breath, then whooshed it out with relief when the dark was replaced with partial light and a pare of familiar blue eyes.

"Vek!" the boy breathed, the Jedi's name only a scant shadow of the shout of relieved joy which filled him. He would have burst out from his hiding place had not the young man placed his hands against the panel to stop him. Everything was going to be alright now!

"Shh..." Revek whispered in reply. He was stretched up to the panel in the corridor where he'd sensed the boy, and offered a smile through the vent. "Stay here."

"But Mom..." the lad started, eager now with hero-worship bravery masking his fear.

"I know. I'll help her." came the murmured answer, followed by a soft adminonishment, "Stay. Here."

Light flooded freely back through the narrow slits as the Jedi moved away. Raanan stayed hidden as he was told until the older man's footsteps faded. One thought filled his youthful mind as he started to inch along the ventilation shaft. He was going to help the Jedi save his Mom.

-----

A smile bloomed unbidden across Captain Nala's face, one that she had to struggle to supress. Revek was here! And her son... he must have found her boy. The Dashade bounty hunter scowled at the flicker he'd caught of her expression and pushed the blaster's muzzle against her bruised and cut temple.

"Don't get any bright ideas." the reptiloid warned in his wet hiss. "I don't need you in one piece."

"No?" rejoined a tenor voice from the crew cabin's open door, "I prefere her that way."

Nala's face was overtaken by a ferocious grin as she laid eyes on the most welcome sight in her life. Revek Faidhe was in the doorway in all his bleached-blonde, shirtless glory with his arms held loosely at his sides, the hilt of his lightsaber gripped in his right hand. This was the stuff holovids were made out of. If the hunter's finger slipped on the trigger, she'd at least have this image to carry with her into the beyond.

"Put down your weapon and she stays whole, Jedi." Ripper snarled.

She wanted to scream and curse the Knight as he complied with the mercenary's request. Instead, she contented herself with a frustrated growl and a feirce glare at the man as he stepped further into the hold and set his lightsaber on the floor.

Revek smiled thinly as he straightened. "Let her go, now. It's me you want." He forced himself to ignore Nala's protest, focusing all his attention on the lamprey-faced killer. The suggestion he poured into his words slid off the Dashade's mind like oil over water, and the thin smile pulled into a light frown.

Ripper barked a gargled laugh, but made no move to comply. "Your fancy tricks won't work, Jedi. Roll your lightsaber over here."

The Jedi finally looked towards the Zeltron and met the woman's fierce gaze with a winning smile as he toed the haft of his weapon down the hold's length. He flicked his attention briefly towards the lightsaber as the Dashade stopped it and pinned it under a boot, then shifted his blue eyes back to the Captain briefly before facing the hunter again.

Nala got the distinct impression that Revek wanted her to do something, wait and do. She followed his pointed gaze towards the surrendered lightsaber with masked confusion, and then down to her feet. Her unbound feet. She hid a sly grin and darted her gaze sideways. If the bloody brute would only move that thrice-damned blaster!

"What now?" Revek asked with a deceptive calm. Nala could sense the exhilaration, the 'readiness' coiled up inside the man, and the utter lack of fear. Jedi Knights, she decided, were insane. Not that this was a bad thing.

The mercenary stretched his nasty grin and swiftly leveled his blaster at the man, "Now, Jedi, you die."

Three things happened simulantiously in the span it took the Dashade to lisp those words. Three things that turned all his luck and skill completely on end. One, the vent cover was kicked away from the inside of the shaft and slammed down noisily onto the deck behind the bounty hunter. Two, Nala, no longer at blaster's end, kicked out between the reptilian humanoid's legs to knock Revek's lightsaber free. And three, the blaster bolt went wild and charred a burnt streak across the wall as the mercenary lost his balance and went down with a thud.

As Captain Nala slumped to the deck in the embrace of the stun-cuffs' discharge, Revek's lightsaber flew across the hold at the Jedi's summons. He ignited the yellow blade with a snap-hiss just as the prone bounty hunter shook a metallic tube out of his left cuff.

Raanan wriggled out of the ventilation shaft with a cry as the Zeltron woman fell. "Mom!"

"Stay back!" Revek shouted, but the boy wasn't listening. In the next instant, the Knight had a more immediate concern to address as the Dashade aimed the tube-like device and fired. The hard-looking projectile launched by the weapon immediately began to expand in the hold's confined quarters, accompanied by Ripper's gargled laughter.

"Dodge this, Jedi..."

There simply wasn't time to evade the growing micro-wire mesh. Revek surrendered to the Force as the entrapping net rushed to ensnarl him, allowing knowledge beyond instinct to guide his glowing blade. The mesh fell upon him in the next moment and drifted to the deck in silvery shreds.

Ripper snarled nastily and was on his feet as his ploy to immobilize the Jedi failed. As he discarded the net-gun with a shake of his wrist, he pulled another implement from his belt and cast it towards the deck between himself and his prey.

"Get down, Raanan!" The boy was, this time, obedient, diving down next to his unconscious mother as Revek reached out with the Force to pluck the grenade from the air. It was, however, what the reptilian bounty hunter had anticipated. The charge exploded in the Jedi's face, briefly obscuring his tall figure in a cloak of orangish gases.

What the Dashade hadn't anticipated was to be foiled again when Revek stepped out of the discipating cloud. He brought his blaster to bear and fired rapidly as the Jedi approached. Without a word, each shot was deflected harmlessly into the bulkheads.

The young Knight's lungs burned with the need for oxygen as he advanced on the bounty hunter. The hasty gulp of air he'd taken at the warning of the Force was nearly exhausted. He had no idea how the gas was affecting Nala and Raanan, only that the lamprey-faced assassin seemed immune. Spots started to swim in Revek's vision, but he was close enough now that vision didn't matter.

The upstroke of his lightsaber was echoed with a throaty howl of pain as the Dashade's blaster and smoking hand hit the deck. The sweeping back-handed follow-through of his blade silenced Ripper's scream. The bounty hunter's decapitated corpse stumbled for a moment, and then fell to the floor.

Revek staggered back from the kill, answering his body's demand for air with painting gasps. The fresh oxygen cleared his vision, but the knock-out gas began to muddle his mind. He switched off his lightsaber and reached the enviro-controls just short of passing out. His last action before sinking unconscious to the deck was to slap all the controls on high. His last thought was that they were safe now.

-----

The cool, sweet rush of pure o2 roused the groggy Jedi. Something was over his mouth. He peeled open a single blue eye to reveal a small pink hand holding the air mask to his face. A smile curved his lips as both eyes opened and focused on Raanan. The boy grinned wide and turned to crow over his shoulder, "Mom! He's awake now!"

Nala grunted acknowledgement from where she sat on the deck against the bench. Her hands were still bound behind her, but at least she was conscious now. "Good. Maybe he can gimmick these vapin' cuffs!"

Revek laughed under the mask and shooed Raanan's hand away as he took hold of it himself. He gingerly tested the air, taking it away for a moment, then disgarded the device alltogether. The scrubbers had cleaned the noxious gas from the ship, which meant he must have been under for some time.

"Silence..." Memory jolted him, and he turned to the Zeltron boy. "By the coolant station outside, Raanan. I hid her there. Go bring her in?" He was already moving towards Nala as he spoke, shaking away the last dregs of his impromptu nap.

"Sure thing, Vek!" As the boy dashed off, his mother frowned up at the Jedi with concern.

"Are you sure that's safe? What if tall, green, and slimy has friends?" Nala jerked her head towards the beheaded corpse in the hold's center.

The Jedi shook his head with a touch of a smile as he helped Nala to scoot around so he could see the cuffs that bound her. "He was alone, I'm sure of it." He spent a moment examning the binders without touching them.

"How do you know?" she questioned sharply. Abducted, held hostage, stunned, and gassed, the Zeltron was in no mood to be pleasant. Stewing, she snapped "You could have left some of him for me."

Revek had to clamp a hand over his mouth to stop his burst of laughter. He had the fortune to be behind her, but the misfortune of the empath picking up on his mirth.

"What?!" she demanded, starting to turn herself around. "You didn't think I was completely helpless, did you?" The low threatening tone in her voice invited no disagreement.

The bleached-blonde human swallowed hard on the thought that she had indeed appeared that way and turned Nala's back to him again with gentle pressure on her shoulders. "You'd have found a way out." he attempted to placate, bending his concentration on the stun-cuffs, "But a Jedi kills swiftly and cleanly, when he must." Ahhh... there was the mechanism. A little twist with the Force and it snapped. The binders fell free as he added in jest, "You can have the next one."

Nala brought her leaden arms forward with relief and rubbed absently at her wrists. The tone of her voice lost some of her waspishness as she spoke, "There'll be a 'next one', too, won't there?"

Revek nodded silently behind her, and rested a hand on her shoulder. "Yes. That's why Silence and I have to go. We've already placed you and your son in too much danger. Once we've scraped up the mess, I'll find us passage off-world."

"And where will you go?" Nala swung around and fixed the Jedi with a sharp look.
"Where the Force leads us." he answered, shrugging openly.

Nala gave a rather unlady-like snort and shook her head, meeting the Jedi's blue eyes directly with her own plum ones. She let loose on the young man in a vaguely insulted tone of voice, "Is there something wrong with my ship that your precious Force won't speak to you here? You think that's any kind of life for Silence, fleeing from place to place on ships you don't know piloted by spacers you can't trust?"

"I... no... uh..." Revek sat back and closed his mouth lest he gape too long at her tirade and the offer concealed beneath it. After a moment, he looked away and lamely stated "I can't ask you to risk your lives again."

Strong magenta fingers reached for his chin and pulled his face back to their owner's gaze. "You aren't asking. I'm offering... but don't go thinking it's free." A smirk crossed Nala's face at the bright blush blooming across the Knight's cheeks. "I never knew Jedi had such filthy minds," she teased the young man, then pressed on. "I need another pilot, and you're -good-. It's not safe for you to stay in one place, but Silence needs a home. Stay."

"I don't know what to say..." Revek stammered. It could work, it really could work, the Captain's proposal. That's what made her idea so tempting and wore away at his relunctance to endanger anyone for the sake of his and Silence's own survival.

"Say 'yes'." Nala encouraged, smiling. She didn't have to glance away to know that Raanan had returned with the Jedi infant. She sensed his nearness, and if she knew her own child, he was listening just outside the open doorway.

Revek nodded slowly, an answering grin growing on his own face. "Yes... but we need to talk abo..." His words were cut off by exactly the topic needing discussion.

An infant's giggles echoed in the freighter's main corridor. Raanan smiled wide as he squeezed Silence in a hug and peered just around the edge of the open doorway to watch his mother soundly kiss the Jedi. "You're staying!"

----- Epilogue -----

"You may report, Captain Asbra."

The Imperial resisted the urge to loosen his collar. Even as a half-meter tall hologram, the Dark Lord of the Sith was imposing and awe-inspiring. And the Supreme Commander of the Imperial Fleet already held the reputation of intolerance to any faults found in his officers. He clasped his hands behind him as he stood at attention to remove any further temptation to a show of weakness.

"Yes, my Lord. We have located the bounty hunter's ship on Ord Mantell. A thorough scan of the shipboard computers revealed that he was trailing a homing beacon placed on the private freighter 'Twilight Queen'. However, no such vessel appears in the Dockmaster's registry and no such transponder code has been detected in system for three standard months, two months earlier than the 'Hunter's Lance' own arrival. We are currently conducting a search for this... 'Ripper'." It proved difficult for Asbra to keep the sneer out of his cultured voice while speaking of the scum.

"Call off your search. The bounty hunter is dead, and that freighter was there, Captain, I feel it. Find it."

"As you wish, Lord Vader."
