Title: A Road of Broken Promises
Author: VaderLVR64
Genre: songfic – Based on the song “Never Will I Break” by 3 Doors Down
Timeframe: Varies
Characters: Anakin, Padmé

A Road of Broken Promises

Lay me down
Wash this blood off my hands for me while I cry out
Don't let me die before I go to sleep
And I can't keep going
But I cannot start again

This road I walk is paved with broken promises I've made
At least a million times I've fallen
But never will I break

Anakin felt her warm hands touching him, her tenderness evident in that soft caress. The unexpected, and undeserved, gift of her caring broke through the walls he had erected around himself when his mother died in his arms. The anger was washed away in a flood of tears and he wept. He cried out his grief and his pain against her shoulder, opened himself up to her completely.

“I’m a Jedi,” he whispered. “I know I’m better than this.” The confession was ripped from him. Padmé gave him hope, for if she could see something worthy of loving within him, then perhaps it still existed. He offered the words up to her, a promise of what he could be, might be, if he had her at his side.

The bloodshed at the Tusken camp, the hot rage that had flowed through him, the dark powers that had surged to a killing crest within him - none of it was more important, or more powerful, than her love. His sins were wiped clean with his tears of remorse; his crimes were forgiven in her arms.

She held him, murmuring healing reassurances as she rocked him gently in her embrace as his mother used to do when he was just a boy. His mother was gone because he had failed her. He had been too late to save his mother, but he vowed that he would never fail Padmé. She was the only thing he had left, the only person in the galaxy who loved him unconditionally. Soon she would realize that they were destined for each other and she would surrender her will to fate.

Almost desperately, he clutched her warm body close to him and his lips found hers in blind hunger. She opened up to him as sweetly as a flower to the rain and he groaned his need, tempted to consummate their love here and now and bury his grief beneath the passion that flared between them. Even as the thought came to him, Padmé pulled away, gasping and her eyes wide with confusion.

“We can’t Anakin,” she whispered, her voice a plea for his understanding.

Wiping away the last of his tears, Anakin reached out and stroked his fingers across her soft cheek, watching the way his tears streaked on her skin. It almost felt as if he was marking her as his, and the thought calmed him, moved him to patience.

Soon you’ll be mine, he promised her. You’ll admit that you love me and that you belong to me – and only me. The promise was a balm to his aching soul, a small light to guide him in the darkness he felt engulf him.

********************

These walls I make
They could hold me in and hold me back today
Oh but tomorrow's new and I'll walk right out and walk right over you
If you hear me screaming
Please don't let me fall again

This road I walk is paved with broken promises I've made
At least a million times I've fallen
But never will I break

“Nothing matters except you and our baby,” he murmured, but a part of him wondered which of them he was trying to convince.

Not that it was important, for only the newfound powers that raged inside of him could save her. He would make any sacrifice to keep her, whether she wanted him to or not. His failure had condemned the first woman he had ever loved and he would not stumble again and lose Padmé.

“Wait for me,” Anakin whispered as he held her close to him.

Padmé’s tears fell, warm on his skin and he shuddered at the sensation. Every centimeter of his flesh seemed overly sensitive, an almost sexual excitement gripping him. His nerves threatened to overload his senses, send him into an uncontrollable spiral that could destroy him. The power of the Dark Side still raced inside his veins, the cool and majestic deluge claiming him.

At last, he knew he had proven himself worthy, demonstrated that he was willing to pay the price – any price – to save her. He had offered up a sacrifice of innocent blood to appease the demon, so that his beloved might be spared. Now she would be safe, and they would raise their child, free of the influence of the stiff-necked Jedi and anyone else who tired to interfere with them.

At long last, he had declared his liberation.

Somewhere inside of him, buried deep beneath denials and excuses, a voice cried out that the price of freedom was too high, that it would be too costly. Anakin had become Darth Vader to save her, but could Padmé love Vader? By becoming what he had become, had he cost Anakin his chance to love Padmé?

Such thoughts were foolish and he thrust them away. Nothing could keep them apart now, not after what he had done. There was only one last obstacle between them now, and he was off to sweep it away from the galaxy. The Separatists would be defeated, and when he had done that, he could turn his attention to Palpatine. He would have no Master, even a Dark Lord. Darth Vader would bend his knee to no one and nothing would ever dictate his path again. He would be free…and he would have her.

My time is on its way
I'll fall but I won't break

This road I walk is paved with broken promises I've made
At least a million times I've fallen
But never will I break

A son!

Their child had lived and he had never suspected it, not after those first few painful months revealed nothing that might give him hope. All these years he had mourned the child that had never been, when in fact he might have rejoiced that at least he had his son! Kenobi has stolen more from him than could ever be returned.

Now, however, he would find his son and he would make peace with him. Luke was young yet, and pliable. There was still hope that he could turn the boy in the right direction, make him see the truth. All the failures, all the things that haunted him in the endless night of this existence, they would all be made right. Luke was his key to freedom, the impetus that would give him the strength to finally overthrow his Master and rule in his own right.

Yes, young Luke was far more important than he knew, and much more powerful than he could guess. It would be up to his father to show him the path that would lead to glory.

The boy looked like him, he mused, but he had his mother’s sweetness shining in his eyes. Luke was Padmé’s son. Though he lay dying, he could find joy in that knowledge, for this was their son, the one they had created out of their love for one another, the child that had saved him. Even now, after so many years and so many sins, Luke had saved him. As surely as Padmé would have done if she had had time, Luke was the path by which Anakin Skywalker had found redemption.

The road was littered with the broken promises he had made, the blood he had shed, and the hearts he had broken, but finally he could see the end of the terrible path in sight. Luke led him there, held his hand on the last few steps of the journey, giving comfort and love where he had no right to expect them.

Together, he and Padmé had given these priceless gifts to the galaxy, two bright shining lights that would illuminate the universe with their goodness – Luke and Leia – his children. The creature who had once been Darth Vader shuddered at light that now shone on him as well, unaccustomed to the brightness, for he had lived too long among the shadows.

The Force beamed down upon him, shedding its forgiving light. He felt it welcome him, open up to him with majestic promise. Anakin reached out as he heard her voice call his name.

Welcome home… she whispered.

“You were right,” he told his son just before he slipped into that warm embrace. “Tell your sister you were right.”

The path before him cleared, all the broken promises swept away.

This was just breathtaking.

Anakin's determination to have Padme and save her at all costs was written perfectly.

And his redemption at the end was bittersweet.

Bravo

Wow, Vadey - you are spoiling me with all these amazing vignettes!! Gosh, I've loved each and every one of them and this is no exception.

I really liked the way you traversed the entire saga - yet somehow you kept it all tied together and fit it in perfectly with the lyrics. And the ending was beautiful - I was left with a bittersweet ache in my heart (and you know how much I love it when that happens)!

Beautiful work! Your talent is amazing!

Beautiful, as always. I love how you referred to Vader's journey of redemption as a path littered with broken promises, and then at the end that path clears for him, etc. All in all, I just love your writing, as always.
Amazing job!

Lovely vig to a great song! You captured Vader's mindsets perfectly, as well as inserting those extra little hints of darkness when he was still Anakin
