Author: IrishEyedJedi
Time Frame: ESB
Characters: Rieekan, Leia, Han
Summary: What happen the night Han and Luke were missing on Hoth.
Notes: "He went out and shot that poor pony, and, for a minute, I thought he was gonna shoot himself." ~ GONE WITH THE WIND (1939)

I was actually really excited when I got this quote because its such a poignant moment in the movie, and I new immediately what I was gonna write for it. I actually used the quote in the viggie, cause I thought it'd be fun. Hopefully you all enjoy.

Desperate Times Call For Desperate Measures

He watched her reaction carefully as the shield doors closed. Her mouth was slightly agape, but otherwise, she wasn’t showing any sign of emotion. The metal clang echoed in the hangar as the large Wookiee wailed for his missing companions. The golden droid walked up to her, but he couldn’t hear what he was saying. The Princess pushed off the X-Wing and walked away.

“I want her watched throughout the night,” his gravelly voice whispered to the Commander next to him.

“Yes, Sir,” the man left to follow out the orders.

The General watched the man for a moment before heading over to his technicians, who were working frantically on the speeders. “Will they be thawed by morning?”

“We believe so, Sir. We just need to make a test run at sun up.”

“Your test run will be finding Skywalker and Solo is that understood?” He demanded.

“Of course, Sir.”

The man had been under pressure from everyone ever since Skywalker had gone missing. The circles under his eyes indicated he was working overtime to try and get the aircrafts ready for flight.

“Do what you can.” The General’s voice softened. “Captain Solo knew the risk in going after Commander Skywalker. No one is expecting two miracles in one night.”

The soldier just nodded his head and went back to work. The General took a deep breath and headed back to the Command Center, guessing a certain Princess was already there, monitoring the signal frequencies.

“Report,” he asked while entering the busy room.

A nervous little man cleared his throat and started to go over the day’s events. They were running low on supplies and would need to make a run within the next week. Ten people had been sent to the medical bay for frostbite and one for hypothermia, the Wampas had been detained in a closet in the north corridor, while several Taun-Tauns had gotten lose and kicked over several barrels of fuel.

“And finally we only have two casualties to report – Commander Skywalker and Captain Solo.”

The air had been suddenly sucked out of the room as all eyes slowly drifted to the Princess who had looked up at the mention of her friends. She looked over at the General, a pleading in her eyes to make the pain go away.

“Please, change Commander Skywalker and Captain Solo’s status as missing – ”

“Until when, Sir?”

“Until we find them,” the General snapped.

The nervous man went back to his station and started to type in the request. The General rubbed his eyes as he leaned against the wall for a brief moment of pause. They were slowly suffocating. The Empire was cutting off any chance of survival the Rebellion had. Yet every time he thought they would make the final blow and crush them, something or someone seemed to come to their aid. Skywalker and Solo had been that shining light in the darkness as they stared down the Deathstar’s laser cannon those two years ago. That heroic act seemed to lift the Rebellion to new heights, recruiting had gone up, suppliers had come forward offering help and for a brief time many thought they actually had a chance at defeating the Empire.

“Carlist.”

His thoughts were interrupted by the faint whisper of the Princess. He opened his eyes to see her standing in front of him, arms crossed as usual.

“Yes, Princess.”

“The long range sensors aren’t picking up anything.” She paused a moment, “I think I should try and get some sleep.”

“That’s a good idea. I’ll walk you back to your quarters,” he offered.

“No, I’ll be fine,” she said quickly.

Her response caused him to arch an eyebrow. “I just need to be alone,” she continued.

“Ok,” he eyed her carefully. “I’ll leave my com on in case you need anything.”

She nodded her head. “Thank you.”

He watched her retreating form for a few moments before he summoned her two droids, knowing they could help keep an eye on her. Minutes later they were standing in front of him.

“Yes, General Rieekan? How can we be of service?” the golden droid asked in his usual polite manner.

“I need the two of you to keep a close eye on the Princess tonight. Report anything out of the ordinary. Understood?” his tone was very serious and it wasn’t lost on the droids.

“Of course, Sir. If her Highness tries anything foolish we will alert you immediately.”

--

“General Rieekan!”

He felt as if his head had just hit the pillow, but in reality he actually had been asleep for several hours. It was a little after two in the morning and the faint light of his com blinking was the only source of light in the room.

“This is Rieekan,” he said in a groggy voice.

“General, the Princess shut R2 and I off several minutes ago. Luckily, our backup systems went online but we can’t find her any where on this side of the base!” the droids frantic voice was piercing at this time of night.

“Calm down, 3PO.” The General had dealt with the droid for many years and knew he could over react. “Contact central command and ask them to do a full sweep of the base. Have them contact me on my com when they’ve found her.”

Slowly rising out of bed, the General went to his closet and began to throw on anything he could find. As he left his quarters, his com beeped once again.

“Rieekan.”

“General we have done a full scan of the base but have found no signs of the Princess. Should we issue an alert, Sir?”

“No,” he grunted. “Let me check the Taun-Taun paddock first. I have an idea on where she might have gone.”

Not waiting for a response he put his com back in his pocket and proceeded to the paddock. As he approached he noticed the equipment locker was slightly open, a saddle and blanket were missing. Fear coursed through his veins; the General’s dear friend would never forgive him if he let his daughter die. Ever since his home planet was destroyed, the General had made a silent vow to look after her. Not taking any chances, he began to saddle up another Taun-Taun. With the shield doors closed there was only one way out that would not sound alarms. Grabbing a large coil of rope he mounted the animal and headed for the small side door.

Proceeding down the corridor on the creature he could feel the change in temperature. She had left the door stay cracked open, he guessed she was using it as a beacon so that she could find her way back in the dark. Dismounting from the Taun-Taun, he tied the rope to the thick door handle making sure to jerk the rope several times to check the knot. He slowly proceeded out the door and turned on his light gun. The animal moaned as the harsh wind and snow whipped around them.

He could feel the Taun-Taun beginning to shake violently as they went deeper into the night. He didn’t have much time before the animal would freeze. He recklessly shined his light in every direction, hoping to catch some glimpse of her. Finally, he saw something. Following the two shapes in the distance he came upon the Princess tugging her Taun-Taun along. It was obvious the poor thing was beginning to freeze. Suddenly, without warning the Princess pulled out a blaster and shot the beast.

“Princess!” He shouted, hoping to snap her out of whatever desperate state she was in.

He jumped off his Taun-Taun but held onto the rope. The General slowly approached the Princess. Her face was completely covered as was his, but she continued to hold the blaster out, which scared him. He knew how much Skywalker and Solo meant to her and how they helped her through her grief of Alderaan.

“Give me the blaster,” he shouted over the howling winds.

The Princess did not move or acknowledge him, so he moved closer standing right in front of her. He tried to place his hand over hers put she pulled away, blaster still charged.

“Please, give me the blaster,” he was able to speak in a normal voice.

“I should have gone with him, I should have helped him look for Luke,” she mumbled.

“You know he wouldn’t have wanted you in this. That’s why he left so quickly.”

“Everyone I care about always seems to leave me,” she choked back a sob.

Knowing how dangerous it was for them to be standing out in the cold, the General put his hand on her shoulder and leaned in to see her eye through the goggles. “Leia,” he whispered, “when we find them. They’re going to need you at full strength.”

Her resolve was beginning to crumble. “Come back to base. Get some sleep and you and I will lead the search for them tomorrow.”

She finally handed him the blaster and allowed him to lead her back to the base. Once he had finished putting his Taun-Taun back in the paddock and secured the equipment he looked over at her. She was shaking slightly and trying to fight the tears, which had been threatening to spill since the shield doors where closed.

“We’ll find them,” he mumbled before wrapping her up in a hug. “I promise.”

--

“Hey, Your Worship. Go get some sleep. I’ll watch the Kid bob in the water for a while,” the brash smuggler said.

“He’s right, Your Higness. Skywalker is stable and will be pulled out of the tank tomorrow. There is nothing more you can do tonight.”

The General was worried about the circles under her eyes. The smuggler had no idea how much she worried about them, but that was going to change.

The Princess’ shoulders slumped in defeat. “Let me know if anything happens.”

“I’ll have Goldenrod check in with you, don’t worry,” the smuggler said as he pushed her to the door.

The General waited until he was sure she had left the medical bay. He watched as the smuggler took a seat next to his Wookiee co-pilot and then began to study the young Jedi.

“She was up all night.” The smuggler was suddenly serious, “wasn’t she?”

“She was,” he said while taking a seat next to him. Both men keeping their eyes forward, bathed in the faint blue light of the Bacta Tank.

“Did she do anything stupid?” he grumbled.

“What do you think?”

Finally the smuggler looked him in the eye. “What happened?”

“After everyone had gone to bed and the skeleton crews were working she took a Taun Taun and tried to go after you – ”

“Son of a Sith!” The smuggler jolted out of his seat and began to pace. “I ran out of here because I knew she’d try and join me in searching for the Kid.”

Ignoring his outburst the General continued, “She hadn’t gotten very far when her Taun-Taun was beginning to show signs of freezing to death.” He stopped a moment then looked up at the smuggler. “She shot that poor creature, and, for a minute, I thought she was going to shoot herself.”

No more words were needed as they continued to share an understanding look. The smuggler just gave a small nod then looked around a moment. “I think I’ll keep an eye on her for a bit. Chewie let me know if anything happens with the Kid.”

The General sighed with relief, one small crises had been advert, but he knew there were many more to come.

Great job with the quote! I loved the entire thing. It was so poignant and gripping. *runs off to read it all over again*

Great Great Viggie!

Beautiful work, IEJ!! applause

These scenes are wonderful in their intensity and brought back great memories of my favorite SW film!! grin

This was such a wonderful moment and I love that you showed it from the General's pov. He seems so fatherly here, watching his friend's daughter suffer and suffering himself for her.

Beautiful!

Squee! You combined two of my favorite movies!!
I'll read just about anything with Han, Leia and Rieekan in it, but getting some GWTW action was a bonus.
Leia is always about to crack under some sort of pressure, isn't she??
And you did a spectacular job with Rieekan. Gruff and slighty crotchy old men with hearts of gold aren't the easiest to write, but it was wonderful.

It wasn't just Luke, it was Han she was worried about, too. That's what Rieekan was trying to tell Han at the end, that Leia cared about him as well. Matchmaker Rieekan, gotta love it! Your portrayal of Rieekan was spot on, the way he wanted to take good care of Leia, knowing that she would probably try something so foolish, and seeing that Han also cared, he let him know what went on. Han's such a softie, too, promising to keep an eye on Leia for awhile. Aww, they love each other; if only they knew it!

Great use of that quote! Wonderful, touching story of a missing moment.
