Hi, everyone! I know you are all tired of hearing apologies for the repeated delays. I'm just still snowed under with work, my kids' sports practices and some volunteer projects. The only writing time I'm finding is in 10-15 minute increments once every couple days. Since this is a pivotal chapter, it's been hard to write in such small bits of time. I'm trying, though. Thanks again for being patient with me!

Well, I'm hoping what happens next will be worth the wait I've been putting everyone through.

Wow! Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm flattered you enjoyed the fic enough to read it in one sitting. And I apologize for the cliffie. LOL! And as for my health, I'm fine now. Thanks for asking.
Just something that I had to address and take care of.
I'll be certain to add you to the PM list!!

ROTFL!! That's okay. I couldn't stop thinking about it, either.
Hi eveyone! Try not to faint from shock, but here's the next update.
Again, I can't apologize enough for the delay. Just know that I AM trying my best. I was so determined to finally get this update posted that I finished the chapter typing with one hand after a nasty run-in between my wrist and a baseball this weekend. So again, believe me, I'm doing my best.
I've started on the next chapter already, and I will update again as soon as I can. Thanks for reading and for your patience!
Many, many thanks to

once again for her help and encouragement.
Chapter 17
"Nooooo!" Padmé felt her knees begin to buckle beneath her. It was only her instinct to protect Jaelyn that kept her on her feet.
Palo released the handle of the vibroknife and backed away, laughing contemptuously as Anakin crumpled to the dirty floor, the weapon still protruding from his bloodied flesh.
"What have you done, Palo?" Padmé cried, feeling utterly helpless and torn between her fear for Anakin and her need to keep Jaelyn safe. Her gaze firmly trained on Palo, alert for even the slightest movement, Padmé knelt down slowly with Jaelyn still cradled in her arms. Placing her hand on Anakin's back, she felt his body rise and fall with ragged, uneven breaths.
"I warned you, Padmé," Palo sneered. "I told you that you wouldn't be able to protect him."
"You're a monster," Padmé hissed.
"
I'm
a monster?" Palo asked incredulously. He began to laugh, the sound sickening Padmé. "I've always thought you to be an intelligent woman, Padmé. You showed such promise in the realm of politics. With your skills in diplomacy and my family's wealth and power, we could have ruled this planet in any manner we deemed appropriate. But then you gave it all away, our future, to care for strays." Palo glanced down at Jaelyn with utter disgust. Then he returned his gaze to her, and Padmé saw something akin to pity and disappointment in his eyes. "But now I see I overestimated you, my love. You are nothing more than a naïve, frightened little girl. You…have no idea, do you?"
Padmé felt a flicker of unease as Palo spoke. There was so much about Anakin that remained a mystery to her. Nevertheless, she did not want to give Palo the satisfaction of taking his bait.
"
Our
future? I see that you still suffer from delusions of grandeur," Padmé said, trying to distract Palo before he hurt Anakin any further. "We never had a future, Palo, because I see you for what you truly are – a foul, loathsome creature. You are nothing more than a coward and a fool who hides behind his father's position and wealth." As she spoke, she slowly eased Jaelyn to the ground beside her and placed him down gently onto the cold stone floor.
Much to Padmé's relief, Palo did not seem to notice her movements, his attentions now on the floor where Anakin was lying on his side, struggling to pull himself to his knees.
"It is you who plays the fool, my dear," he scoffed. "Yet even without you, I
will
soon rule the pitiful beings of this planet. You see, Padmé, even as we speak ,the Empire grows closer to our fair planet, and as regional governor, my father has taken great pains, as well as great expense, to express our family's undying support for its leaders. It is only a matter of time before the Emperor replaces Naboo's leaders with those more suited to his needs, and my father will ensure that I am at the head of that new regime."
Padmé shook her head in disgust. "Perhaps I should pity you rather than despise you."
"You could have been my queen," he continued as if she had not spoken. "But now…when I am ruler, I will just have to see to it that you and all your little gutter rats are disposed of along with the rest of the useless rubbish that sullies our lovely planet."
Padmé watched as Palo's nostrils flared in anger, and he kicked out hard, his booted foot connecting with Anakin's side.
"Arrghh!" Anakin gave a strangled cry and fell back against the cold stone.
"It seems your
hero
isn't invincible, after all," Palo said, his voice dripping with disdain.
Anger burned within Padmé, and with a primal scream of fury ripping from her throat, she lunged toward Palo. She was unarmed and knew it would most likely be a futile effort, but she couldn't just sit back and watch Anakin die.
Despite her size, Padmé had the dual advantages of surprise and the instinct to protect those she cared about at all costs. She hit him low, instinct and the self defense training she received during her political career telling her that it would be her best chance to draw him off-balance. Caught off-guard by the unexpected attack, Palo backpedaled awkwardly then fell backward onto the stone floor as Padmé's shoulder connected with his legs. Scrambling forward, Padmé thrust out her arm, and Palo howled in pain as the heel of her palm struck the bridge of his nose.
"Anakin!"
Padmé whirled around as she heard Jaelyn cry out. The small boy had regained consciousness and was now leaning down over Anakin's limp body, hugging him tightly.
"Jaelyn, you have to get out of here now!" Padmé cried.
The little boy ignored her pleas. "Please, wake up," Jaelyn sobbed, shaking Anakin gently.
Padmé couldn't allow herself to notice how still Anakin was, how pale he seemed. "Please, Jaelyn," she said as she began to scurry across the stone floor on her hands and knees. "Anakin would want you to be safe." Before Padmé could reach Jaelyn, however, there was a sharp tug on her skirts, and she felt herself being pulled backward across the rough, uneven floor.
"You shouldn't have done that," Palo growled low in his throat. Grasping her arms, he turned her over to face him and straddled her body, his knees digging painfully into her sides. Blood was rushing forth from his broken nose, and Padmé saw fury seething in his eyes.
Instinctively, Padmé tried to lash out at him, but Palo still held her arms firmly. Fearing there would be no escaping this time, she screamed out to Jaelyn one last time, desperate that the little boy get to safety before Palo could turn his attentions to him. "Jaelyn, you have to run away. You have to find – "
Padmé felt her airway constrict as Palo's hands suddenly closed around her throat. Her arms now free, she tried to pry away Palo's hands, but the tautness of the muscles in his forearms was proof of his determination.
"No," she managed to gasp, trying in vain to draw more breath into her lungs. Shadows began to gather around the edges of her vision. Determined not to give up without a fight, Padmé began to claw at Palo's already bloody face, her fingernails raking painfully across his flesh.
Palo cried out in pain, but his grip merely tightened in anger. "You'll pay for what you've done, Padmé. You turned me away, humiliating me, all to become a wench to
his
kind."
Darkness began closing in, and Padmé's arms fell to her sides. Her lungs screamed for air, but she had none to give them. Her eyes lost focus, blessedly shutting out Palo's face. His angry shouts grew fainter, and from somewhere she could hear the singing of the birds in the meadow. Then above this sweet sound, she heard Anakin's laughter.
Everything here is beautiful…
Anakin…
her mind whispered.
I love you.
From somewhere above her, she heard a warrior's cry, a bone-chilling sound of rage. The crushing pressure at her throat was lifted and life-giving air rushed into her lungs. She rolled onto her side, coughing and sputtering violently, her body and mind still disoriented. Looking up, she saw Anakin and Palo circling one another slowly. Anakin's step was unsteady. The vibroknife was gone, and Anakin's left hand was pressed against his abdomen where blood still seeped from his wound.
"I'm growing rather tired of having to try to kill you. Why won't you just die…like the rest of your kind…" Palo growled contemptuously. Padmé saw his lips curl into an ugly sneer, and Palo spat at Anakin's feet, the bloody mass landing on Anakin's scuffed and worn boot.
Anakin merely laughed. It was a hollow sound that unnerved Padmé. "You can't kill something that is already dead. And I died a long time ago." His last words were a whisper, and Padmé was certain she could not have heard him correctly.
She had no further time to ponder the matter. His face suddenly contorting in pain, Anakin stumbled, gripping his abdomen. Palo took advantage of this moment of weakness. Spinning in place, he delivered a roundhouse kick, his foot connecting soundly with Anakin's jaw.
The blow knocked Anakin from his feet, and Palo wasted no time in continuing his attack. Even as Padmé cried out in protest, Palo stomped hard on Anakin's abdomen, the heel of his boot grinding into the bloody vibroknife wound. Anakin bellowed in agony.
"Palo, no!" Padmé screamed, trying to crawl to Anakin.
From the corner of her eye, Padmé sensed movement. In an instant, Jaelyn was at Palo's side, kicking and biting at the older man as he tried to pull him away from Anakin. Palo merely laughed at the little boy's efforts. Grasping Jaelyn about the throat, Palo lifted him from his feet and threw him across the room as if he were nothing more than a discarded doll. Jaelyn's head struck the stone floor when he landed, and his tiny body gave a single twitch before growing still.
Padmé felt as if the breath had been ripped from her lungs once more. She stared at Jaelyn, waiting for any sign of movement. Seeing nothing, she scurried to his side. "Jaelyn, please…" she whispered, placing her hand atop his tiny chest. Finally, she felt it rise ever so slightly beneath her touch.
"Who will you try to save, my love?" Palo taunted her, his words punctuated by the sickening sound of Anakin's cries of pain as he continued to pummel Anakin's head, chest and body with his heavy boot. "Your mysterious lover or this pitiful orphan child? Whose screams of death will you choose to ignore? Whose pathetic life is worth more to you?"
Padmé felt a rage burning within her unlike any she had ever known before. She spotted the vibroknife resting nearby in a pool of Anakin's blood. Standing on shaking legs, she moved around Jaelyn and slowly walked over to retrieve the weapon. Kneeling down, she took the hilt in her trembling hand, trying to ignore the copious amounts of red fluid and what it meant, its stickiness on the hilt, the way it dripped from the deadly blade onto her skirts as she stood and turned to face Palo.
"Do you think you can kill me?" Palo laughed incredulously, ceasing his merciless attack long enough to stare at her, his gaze slowly roving over her small frame as if to emphasize the futility of her intentions.
"I'm going to try." Padmé answered, her voice barely containing her fury.
Palo's laughter died on his lips, and Padmé watched as his eyes filled with contempt. "Then it will be your fatal mistake, my love."
"Perhaps," she conceded, resigned to her fate. "But it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make to see that you rot in the bowels of the netherworld where you belong."
Gripping the vibroknife tightly, Padmé lunged forward, the bloody weapon held high above her head. She brought her arm down in a deadly arc, but Palo caught her wrist easily, locking them in a battle of wills. Their faces were so close that Padmé could smell the metallic scent of the blood on Palo's mangled face and in his hot breath. The pressure on her wrist increased; Padmé was certain he would crush her bones beneath his durasteel grip. Yet she refused to relinquish her hold on the vibroknife.
"This is a battle you cannot win, Padmé," Palo whispered against her cheek. "You have failed them. But I will spare you long enough so that you may hear their dying screams. On second thought, perhaps I will spare you a bit longer…" Palo pressed his lips against her cheek, his mouth and tongue raking hungrily across her flesh.
Repulsed, Padmé turned her face from him, fighting back a wave of nausea as she felt his blood smear across her face. "I would drive this blade through my own heart first," she spat.
Palo's grip tightened even more in retaliation, and Padmé heard a sickening
crack
as a stab of pain shot through her wrist and fingers. Her hand began to shake of its own volition, the hilt beginning to slip within her grasp. Padmé thought of her family, of Aiel, Jaelyn and the other children.
She thought of Anakin…
Calling upon every remaining ounce of strength and resolve she possessed, Padmé held firm to the vibroknife. Suddenly, she heard Palo gasp. Looking up at him, Padmé saw his eyes bulging and darting wildly around him in fear as he began to choke and sputter, seemingly unable to draw breath into his lungs. He released her, his hands flying to his throat where he began to rake and claw wildly at his own flesh. Palo backed away from her, his face growing gray and ashen.
Confused and somewhat frightened, Padmé stood frozen, watching him. Then as suddenly as it began, whatever unseen force had assaulted Palo appeared to release him, and he crumpled in a heap to the floor, gulping in air as he coughed violently.
"I warned you before to leave her alone."
The sound of Anakin's voice pulled Padmé from her trance, and she turned to see him standing at her side, staring down at Palo with burning eyes. His breathing was labored, and his face and hair were soaked with feverish perspiration. His left hand still cradled his wound, his normally towering frame bent in agony. Reaching out with his right hand, he slowly took the vibroknife from her fingertips.
"Take Jaelyn and go," he whispered tenderly. "I don't want you to see this."
"No," Padmé argued, reaching out to touch his face. "I'm not leaving you."
"It's too late for me, Padmé…"
A scuffling sound drew their attention, effectively ending their discussion. Looking up, Padmé saw that a few meters away, Palo was slowly getting to his feet. Anakin turned from her and approached Palo, his feet stumbling slightly on the uneven stone floor.
"I…told you," Anakin gasped, "you can't kill…what's already dead."
Anakin struck out, his fist connecting with Palo's jaw. Palo's head snapped to the side from the force of the blow, blood spurting from his mouth and splattering against the ground. Without hesitation, Anakin thrust the vibroknife into Palo's midsection, the resulting wound mirroring his own. Palo bellowed out in pain, gripping the hilt of the weapon. His teeth bared in animal fury, he swung out at his adversary.
His blow met its mark and Anakin stumbled backward, a fresh cut running the length of his cheekbone. Yet Anakin recovered quickly. His jaw set in determination, he glared at Palo, and Padmé thought she saw a glimmer of red flicker briefly in his eyes. Not trusting her own senses, Padmé blinked rapidly, and when she looked at Anakin again, she saw only the familiar blue from her dreams.
Anakin bore down on Palo, the two men exchanging glancing blows. Then suddenly Anakin charged forward with his left foot, his taut forearm resembling the blade of a vibrosword as it snapped out quickly, the side of his hand striking Palo in the throat. His larynx crushed, Palo struggled in vain to breathe, his hands once more grasping at his throat. Anakin cried out in rage and determination, and Padmé watched as his body twisted, his torso horizontal to the ground as his legs became airborne, swinging around and striking Palo's head with a devastating ferocity.
The blow sent Palo sprawling, his body landing face down on the stone floor, embedding the vibroknife even deeper into his torso. His body convulsing, Palo lifted his face from the bloody stone, his features contorted in a silent scream of rage and agony. Finally, his head fell back against the ground and his body grew still. Padmé watched as the life slowly left his eyes, leaving behind only the vacant stare of death.
Anakin stumbled over to Palo's body. "It's…over, Padmé," he said weakly. "He…won't hurt you…again." Swaying wildly, Anakin crumpled to the floor, his broken, weary body coming to rest beside his vanquished foe.

Yeow!!! What a chapter. I love Padme's determination to help both Jaelyn and Anakin, and her fury at Palo, but he gave a few secrets as to Anakin's identity. Is Ani a Sith because of the red/yellow eyes, or a Jedi as he seems to be... there's a whole backstory here, that I for one, would LOVE to see.

Great fight scene. It was very vivid and exciting. I didn't know if Padme would kill Palo or Anakin but etiher one of them was angry enough to do it. Great job with this. I hope Anakin lives but I'm not holding my breath.

No lightsaber? No Force use (except for a little half-way Force-choke...)?
This really is a mystery story...
'Can't kill what is already dead...' Is Anakin..... a zombie....? Or is he just 'on the lam', afraid to reveal himself to eyes that can see Force use across the whole galaxy...?
Curiouser and curiouser. And man, do you have me HOOKED!
Hope your wrist feels better real soon!

Great chapter, very intense. I'm glad Palo's dead, but what will happen to the others now? Will anyone believe it was self-defense? Will Anakin and Jaelyn make it? Palo was just crazy and evil. Great job!!!!

Looks like Anakin tapped into the power of the Dark side a little bit there...Paolo deserved it though so I say it doesn't count
.
That was truly an awesome fight scene and it had me on the edge of my seat the entire time!
I can't wait for the next update!
