Catching up on the last two chapters. I knew Anakin would survive, though he's not quite out of the woods yet. The dream sequence was quite intense, and I like that it was Padmé's inadvertent confession of her love that made Anakin come back.

Now I really, REALLY can't wait to find out about his past. *taps fingers impatiently* grin Do update soon!

Oh, and not sure if I've said this before, but I love the cover art of this story!

I'm very anxious to find out about Anakin's past, where he came from and what he's running from. It seems to me that he uses Padme as a crutch to help deal with whatever darkness is haunting him... As of now, I'm inclined to wager that He was the apprentice/henchman of the Emperor and but he saw his evil and decided to try and run away from it

I'm a huge fan of this chapter.
She nearly came to the aferlife to bring him back! grin That's amazing. A very intimate scene too.
Beautiful description of the dream, it was so intense.

"I saw her just…just before you came for me, Padmé."

Padmé halted abruptly, feeling as if her heart had momentarily stilled its beating. "Wh-what did you just say, Anakin?" she asked as she slowly turned around. But she would receive no answer. Anakin had fallen into a deep sleep once more.

Wonderful! grin applause

Good chapter. grin I loved Anakin and Padmes journey to the Underworld.
There's been more than enough hints...Padme could probably guess that he is Force-sensitive. thinking Then again, it is unknown how much did the 'normal' people know about the Jedi in that time.

Hope Anakin feels better soon.

Hi, everyone! At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I apologize for yet another delay in updates. My schedule the last month just wouldn't budge, no matter how hard I tried to find time to work on the next chapter. But now that school is out for the summer, I will hopefully be able to update in a more timely manner. However, I'm leaving for Philadelphia tomorrow and will be gone for a couple weeks. I had hoped to update before I left, but I couldn't make it happen. But I will update as soon as I can! Thanks again for your patience. hugs

Now why would you be worried? batting

MissSkywalker68

We're actually only a few chapters away from learning the truth behind Anakin's past. dancing

michaellover

Yes, he's safe for now. wink

JediXManSerenaKenobi

Thank you! blush I think there are certain emotions and feelings that are becoming extremely difficult for either of them to ignore, and that's making it difficult for Anakin to continue keeping those barriers between them.

Thank you! grin

Yes, so many questions. whistling But don't worry, some of the answers are coming soon!

You're right. A lot could still happen. mischief

Thank you very much! happy I enjoyed writing this chapter, with its dream sequence in the afterlife. He remembers things, but in his current state, things are jumbled, confused.

PadawanMom5610

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the dream. Yes, they shared it, in a sense, which begs the question - was it really just a dream or was it something else ? thinking

jedi_princess18

Let's just say a few confessions are only a few chapters away. grin

dianethx

Bingo!! dancing That's exactly what was happening. It was his choice to make whether to die or come back to her.

DragonLotus

Thank you! rose Glad you like the cover. Some answers regarding his past are coming soon. I've actually had the "reveal" chapter written for more than a year, LOL. It's just matter of finding a way to hide from DRL long enough to write the couple chapters that come before it. frustrated

Vivid_Scripts

Padme was a factor he never planned on. Her presence complicates things for him, but he's drawn to her, and that makes things even MORE complicated. worried

Darthana

Thank you! blush This chapter was my favorite to write, so I'm glad you liked it.

Ulic_Starwalker

Unless you had direct experience or witness of a Jedi and his/her abilities, I don't know that the average being would automatically make the connection. But then again, sometimes, we have a tendency to pretend not to see that which we do not want to see or believe. wink

AnakinLuver

Thank you! I take that as quite a compliment. hugs

Oh, my goodness! I just caught up with the last three chapters and they were so intense - I was on the edge of my seat!!

Loved them!! I especially loved that they were in each other's dreams once more. The imagery of the river and the clash between the raging storm on the one side and the peaceful sunlit meadow on the other was fabulous. Oh, my how I love the intimacy of it all.

I'm so happy Anakin is better! Now to just get some more alone time for those two. wink

And I must add, that as I was reading the last chapter for the second time today, I really loved how you had Anakin realize Padme loved him even though she didn't speak the words and it was at that moment he decided to fight to come back to her. I love that she felt arms around her just before the storm passed - were those Anakin's arms that he really put around her as he lay in bed awakening from the "dream" and realizing she was sleeping on his chest or was that just in the dream?

Chapter 20

The morning sun streamed in through the kitchen windows, filling the cheery room with its golden warmth. Her spirits high, Padmé hummed softly to herself as she bustled about the kitchen, completing her morning chores. Turning to the tray resting on the counter, she picked up Anakin's breakfast dishes, noting with satisfaction that he had eaten all of his meal. With his appetite finally restored, Padmé knew that Anakin would quickly begin to regain his strength.

Washing the dishes carefully in the small sink, Padmé marveled once more at the progress of Anakin's recovery. A week had passed since their fateful encounter with Palo, yet with little initial hope for Anakin's survival, his condition had continued to improve steadily with each passing day. He still suffered with pain, although he tried to hide that fact from her. And he was still quite weak, of course, sleeping much of the time. More than once, Padmé had slipped quietly into Anakin's bedchamber to find him in such a deep state of sleep, it was as if he was in some type of trance. She supposed the rest was good for him, and although his breathing was always calm and steady, it worried Padme when she could not awaken him from these deep bouts of sleep.

Yet by all outward appearances, Anakin's flesh had healed at a tremendous rate, small areas of the wound having already faded to a scar. Even Sola, who had dropped by from time to time to monitor Anakin's condition, had been at a loss to explain the speed of his recovery.

*********

"I don't understand it, Sola," Padmé said in a low voice. "How could a vibroknife wound that deep begin to heal so quickly?"

It was the morning following Padmé's unsettling dream, and Sola had arrived shortly after dawn. Quickly ushering her sister into the guest bedchamber, Padmé had gently lifted the dressing over Anakin's wounds, being careful not to wake him. Turning to her sister with a questioning look, Padmé saw Sola's eyes widen in surprise. Anakin began to stir in his sleep, and Padmé hurriedly replaced the dressing. They slipped quietly from the room and moved to the living area with Padmé keeping a watchful eye on the corridor, fearful that Anakin would somehow overhear their discussion.

"I'm at a loss to explain it," Sola said, shaking her head slowly, her expression bewildered. "I suppose…some beings just heal more quickly than others."

Padmé eyed her sister skeptically.

Sola threw her hands up in defeat. "I know, it's a weak explanation, but I've nothing else to offer. But he's alive, Padmé. That in itself is more than I expected. So why question the means. Just be grateful that you didn't lose him."

"I am grateful, Sola," Padmé snapped. "I just don't understand it."

Sola placed a hand on Padmé's shoulder. "That's the problem, dear sister. Sometimes you need to think with your heart rather than with your head."

*********

"But haven't I been thinking with my heart every moment since Anakin Skywalker came into my life?" Padmé muttered to herself as she stared out the kitchen window at the garden fence Anakin had mended so carefully.

"Looks like it's going to be a beautiful day."

Startled by the unexpected voice, Padmé abruptly dropped the dish she was holding into the sink, a small amount of water splashing onto her bodice and skirt. Whirling around, she was surprised to see Anakin standing beside the kitchen table, his arms resting on the back of a chair for support.

"Anakin, you're up and about," she said, smiling broadly. Until now, Anakin had remained in bed, confined there by his own fatigue and need to heal. A few times, Padmé had helped him to the cozy, overstuffed chair that rested under the window in the guest chamber so he could enjoy the sunshine, but even those small efforts had seemed to leave Anakin winded and tired.

Anakin smiled shyly. "No offense, Padmé. You have a lovley guest chamber, but it's a bit…um…feminine. And I'm afraid that if I have to spend one more minute cooped up inside, looking at the same pale walls and bed coverings with flowers all over them, I think I'll lose my mind." Anakin laughed heartily, wincing almost immediately and reaching down with a single hand to hold his abdomen protectively.

Padmé shook her head in amusement. "Why, Anakin Skywalker, I'll have you know that I personally decorated that bedchamber." Then her expression turned serious. "You should have called for me rather than trying to walk alone," she admonished. "I would have helped you."

"I'm fine, Padmé," he assured her, removing his hand from his abdomen as if to prove his point. "If you have the time, I was thinking we could maybe sit in the garden for a while. Maybe talk and enjoy the sun."

Padmé crossed her arms over her chest and regarded him with a raised brow. "I thought you were quite tired of looking at flowers," she reminded him, her mouth twitching with laughter.

Anakin rolled his eyes and laughed once more, although a bit more carefully now. "Well, I suppose I can bear it a little longer."

Padmé decided she had teased him long enough. "I think it sounds like a wonderful idea, actually. A bit of fresh air and sunshine will do you some good. But you have to let me help you into the garden. And I'll have no arguments," she added with a wag of her finger as Anakin opened his mouth to protest.

Anakin nodded his agreement, and Padmé moved to his side. Placing his left arm over her shoulder and her hand gently about his waist, she helped Anakin maneuver out of the cottage and into the garden. She kept their pace slow, noticing that his breathing was still a bit labored from even this small amount of activity. She helped him to a chair in the center of the garden, made sure he was comfortable, and then slipped into the chair beside him, curling her legs beneath her. Anakin lifted his face to the sky and closed his eyes, drinking in the sun's warm rays.

"Is this better?" she asked with a laugh.

"It's wonderful," he said, inhaling slowly, trying to breathe in the fresh air.

"Would you like something to drink? I can bring out a tray for you."

Anakin shook his head, and Padmé settled back in her chair, content to sit quietly and enjoy his company. She took a moment to scrutinize him, noting that his skin was still quite pale, but she assured herself that it was merely due to his time indoors over the last week. And his strength would return in time, she knew. But she worried that he would try to overexert himself, possibly causing damage to his wound.

"I told you, Padmé, I'm fine," Anakin muttered, lowering his face and turning to smile knowingly at her.

Padmé blushed. How did he always seem to know what she was thinking?

"I wasn't, I mean…I didn't say anything."

"I could tell that you were staring at me," he said. "And I know how worried you've been."

Padmé looked down at her hands, folded and resting in her lap. "You risked yourself to save my life, and Jaelyn's life," she whispered. "When I brought you back here…I thought I was going to lose you. You were dying, and I felt so helpless. I don't think I've ever been more frightened in my entire life."

Anakin reached out and placed his hand atop hers, giving them a gentle squeeze. "I'm alright," he assured her. "You and your sister…you saved my life, too, Padmé."

Padmé shook her head slowly. "I don't know how to explain it. Sola said you wouldn't survive, yet your recovery…you've managed to heal so quickly."

Anakin's hand flinched slightly. "I've been…fortunate, I suppose." He removed his hand from hers, giving a dismissive wave. Then his expression turned somber. "Padmé, you've avoided my questions before, but we can't ignore it any longer. We have to discuss Palo."

Padmé eyed him carefully. She knew he was right, but nevertheless, she had the feeling that he was anxious to change the topic of conversation. "There has been no mention of him," she said. "Maybe no one knew that Palo had returned to Naboo. I'm beginning to wonder if he really went off-world at all following your confrontation in the alleyway or if it was just a rumor he spread so he could go into hiding without anyone growing suspicious of his whereabouts."

Anakin's brow furrowed in confusion. "Why would you think that?"

Padmé's cheeks began to burn with shame. "I never told you…I was afraid you would try to find him."

"You never told me what, Padmé?" Anakin demanded.

Padmé fidgeted nervously in her chair. "That day I went into the village, while you were repairing my fence. When I returned, you were concerned because I seemed upset."

"I remember." Anakin nodded, and Padmé saw his eyes narrow slightly, his lips turning downward into a frown. "You saw Palo that day, didn't you, Padmé?"

"Yes," she admitted in a small voice. "He confronted me on the road leading from the village. He was dressed in a dark cloak, similar to yours. He had been watching me, watching us. He threatened you, Anakin. I was frightened. Not for me, but for you."

Anakin cursed under his breath, and he rose from the chair. He took a few unsteady steps, his fists clenching and unclenching in frustration. Then he turned to her. "You should have told me, Padmé."

"I know. If I had been honest, you would have known that Palo was on Naboo. Maybe he never would have been able to take Jaelyn. I put him in danger. I put both of you in danger."

Anakin exhaled wearily. "It doesn't matter now. Palo's dead. He can't hurt us anymore. "

Us? Padmé blinked in surprise at Anakin's use of the word. But she brushed aside the notion, convincing herself that it had meant nothing. At the moment, they had more important things to consider. Padmé stood up and went to him, placing her hands gently against his chest. Anakin's hands instinctively encircled her waist, and Padmé was caught off guard by the gesture, her flesh tingling beneath his touch.

"What are we going to do, Anakin?" she asked. "It's only a matter of time before Palo's father begins looking for him. Palo's friends know about you. What if–"

"Shhh," Anakin whispered, placing a tender kiss against her forehead. "We're not going to worry about that now."

Padmé closed her eyes. His lips were so warm, so soft. If only they could just stay here, together in this garden forever. "But we have to, Anakin," she argued. "Palo's family is very powerful. This isn't something we can just ignore and hope it goes away."

Anakin took her face within his hands. "I know, Padmé. We'll think of something. I promise."

Taking her hand, Anakin slowly led her through the garden to a bench nestled between a cluster of fragrant flowering bushes. He sat on the bench, pulling Padmé down beside him. Wincing softly in pain, he put his arm around her, pulling her closer. Padmé was tentative at first, not wanting to hurt him, but she finally acquiesced, resting her head against his shoulder. His scent was familiar, comforting, and the warmth of the sun shining down on them felt like favorite blanket. She suddenly felt quite weary.

"Why don't you just close your eyes and get some rest," Anakin murmured against her hair. "You're exhausted. I can see it in your eyes. You've been so worried about taking care of me that I suspect you haven't slept properly in days."

"I'm fine," Padmé protested feebly. But the sun was so warm, and her eyelids felt so heavy. Perhaps it wouldn't hurt to close my eyes for just a few minutes, she thought, the steady sound of Anakin's breathing lulling her into a peaceful sleep.
