Title: Ties of Loyalty
Timeframe: Inter-trilogy (a few years post-RotS)
Characters: Quinlan Vos, Khaleen Hentz, Zhanna "Lucky" Klivian (Imperial pilot OC; Hobbie's mother), Clone Commander Bly, Vader, Other OCs: Ka'var Komad, Nia Smoo, etc.
Genre: Canon, Action, Drama, Humor, Romance
Summary: In the days of the new Galactic Empire, those who once fought alongside the Jedi find themselves hunting a Jedi down, a former Jedi seeking peace finds himself a renegade again, and thieves and smugglers find themselves fighting for others.
Notes: You shouldn't need to be familiar with any of the EU/minor canon or OC characters to follow this. But two short prequels with some of the OC characters can be found in the links below. Reading these aren't essential for understanding this story. A Daughter Remembers (Nia/Ka'var) & It's Never Simple (Imperials).
-- |-o-| -- |-o-| -- Chapter 1: Ka'var Komad -- |-o-| -- |-o-| --
The blazing midday suns beat down on the capital of Kirs Alor, reducing the shadows to almost nothing. The once beautiful tall buildings had been blasted to rubble months ago. The royal house incurred the Empire's wrath by harboring several individuals who had once been influential in the Confederacy. But few had sympathy for the planet's plight. Everyone knew that they had remained loyal to the Republic throughout the Clone Wars out of a desire to keep open their best market for selling luxury items and attracting wealthy tourists. Most suspected that their decision to protect Separatist businessmen had more to do with finances than ideology.
Ka'var Komad was trying really hard to be one of those few who had sympathy, even though it seemed that the only thing that had not been battered down by the Empire were the enormous egos of the planet's citizens. Not many Twi'leks visited the planet anymore now that trade was less lucrative and the entertainment industry had faded. But he was still here, smuggling basic supplies in at very little profit for himself. Little financial profit at least. It had been nice to make his smuggling partner and dear friend, Nia, happy. For some reason, she liked these people. And he had been able to find a rare part for a ship that belonged to their associate. That had made him happy.
Until he discovered that there was something wrong with it. He could not disassemble it. How could you enjoy a new part without being able to take it apart? And less importantly, how could you make sure that it worked correctly? Nia had not quite accepted that argument or understood why he needed to head back to the parts emporium to find some sort of tool to be able to take it apart. But then she was a pilot, not a true mechanic like himself. It was not as if it was that far of a walk from the ship after all. And in the past few days, when he could find spare time, he had tried every tool he had to try and get the thing open without destroying it. Then he had remembered that there was something funny in the way the store's owner had acted when he bought. Something that looked a lot like guilt over selling someone a part that did not work as it should.
Selye's Starship Parts Emporium looked like it was in better condition than most of the businesses in the area. It even had a working neon sign that looked like it might be new. Inside, Selye was behind the front counter talking to a customer. Ka'var wandered in among the aisles of the store, keeping an eye on the front so that he would know when the shopkeeper was free. Though he could only see the customer's back, he noted that the man looked to be the opposite of the short, round, dark-haired shopkeeper. The customer was tall and imposing. And the way he carried himself had a distinct military quality to it. More than military. Imperial.
Ka'var moved out of sight and tried to look casual about it. Were he still a simple small-time smuggler he would have simply run. But he had to know what looked to be an Imperial Officer was here. Did they pose some further threat to the people here? His associates would want to know. If he could just keep calmly out of the way for a few minutes maybe he would hear something of value.
"You have already received ample compensation. I only ask for one small thing more." The man's voice was like polished steel and Selye was already sweating with tension. There was little doubt that Imperial would get the answers he wanted. He continued in the same polite, deadly tone, "Tell me who bought the modulator."
Modulator? Ka'var looked down at the engine modulator in his hand. The piece of equipment that his instincts had told him there was something wrong about. Without making a sound, he laid it back on the shelf he was hiding behind. Somehow asking for his money back did not seem like a great idea just now.
"But it's been so busy this week! I can hardly remember who has been in and out." The shopkeeper spoke defensively as Ka'var's mind raced. It must have been designed to do some sort of sabotage or maybe it had a tracer or something like that in it?
Selye's nervous gulp could be heard from across the store. "Maybe if you described who you were looking for, something might ring a bell?"
Ka'var held his breath to listen for the answer. Surely it was just bad luck that he had picked up the part.
The officer sounded annoyed. "Very well. A Kiffar male with the usual dreadlocks and yellow markings?"
"Doesn't sound familiar."
But it sounded familiar to the smuggler. It sounded exactly like the person he had been working with. He edged towards the door, keeping out of view as much as possible as he prepared to get out of there quickly.
The Imperial continued as if he had a whole list in his head. "A human female with purple hair?"
That described another person he had been working with. It was all too much of a coincidence. He darted out of the store, praying he would not be seen. As his pale purple lekku trailed out behind him while he ran, the last words he heard from the shopkeeper were: "No, no one with purple hair."
It was no use hiding on these shadowless streets. Besides, he knew Nia would already have the engines started on their ship. He had told her he would not take long and she was not in a patient mood. He just had to get there as quickly as possible. It occurred to him that Selye must have seen him leave and come in. And though he had taken a bribe to plant the tracer or whatever it was, he had also prolonged the conversation long enough for him to figure out that he needed to get out of there. He might even still be stalling for him. Maybe there was something beyond greed here after all.
Also, let me know if you want update PMs!

-- |-o-| -- |-o-| -- Chapter 2: Lt. Zhanna “Lucky” Klivian -- |-o-| -- |-o-| --
The week just kept getting worse for Lieutenant Klivian. In retrospect, it had not really started out that badly. All that had happened on Monday was to have her TIE-Fighter take a hit and fall apart around her. Fall, perhaps was not quite the right word. It seemed more like every piece of the broken starfighter decided to slam into her before drifting into space. And then she floated alone until the combat ended, wonder what was going to go wrong next. This was not exactly fun, but at least she had the benefit of shock to dull some of the pain. She did not really remember much about being brought back in, but she supposed her flight suit had stayed intact. Being able to breathe after a day like that meant that things were not completely terrible.
The next few days were less pleasant. She alternated between extensive pain and extensive medication. Most of her injuries healed quickly with bacta bandages, but the medical droids had to operate on her knee. They told her that despite the damage, they had been able to perfectly reconstruct the knee. Later, when she was able to see it for herself, she noticed that her left knee now perfectly matched that of a storm trooper. The surgeons had apparently entirely missed the fact that neither she nor her uninjured knee looked large, male, or Mandalorian.
She tried to put that aside and focus on the probability that she would not be able to fly for a little while. She had just a little hope that that meant she might be sent home for several days or longer. Since she had been forced to fly for the Empire several months ago, she had missed far too much of her little boy growing up. Mismatched knees would be worth it if she would be able to go home for a while. But the possibility of that happening seemed to grow dimmer by the hour.
By the end of the week she realized something worse than exploding TIEs and excruciating injuries had happened. Somewhere between the pain and the medication she must have said some things that she really, really shouldn’t have. Words were whispered around her when they thought she was resting. Nothing good could come from phrases such as “Jedi-loving scum” or “Lord Vader should hear about this” or the ever-cheerful “Fifty credits says they let her see what it’s like to float in space without an air supply.”
She began to be treated as though she had a death sentence. No one wanted to talk to her more than necessary. No one from her squadron came to visit. It seemed like even the medical droids acted reticent around her. They still helped her with her rehab, but she got the feeling that everyone thought it was pointless. She had felt less alone when she was floating in space. Left alone for too many hours, she began to think too much and wonder what she might have said.
The answer came to her, but realizing it only increased her sense of dread. Pilots and soldiers sometimes had flashbacks to prior battles when they were injured. Once before, had she been in a ship that was very badly damaged. Early in the Clone Wars, she flew as part of the Republic Fleet in a battle with the Separatists over the planet of Sydow. At one point she ended up flying close to Anakin Skywalker.
Without warning, Skywalker had recklessly flown alone into the midst of the battle. At least it looked reckless to her. In all honestly, he probably was quite safe and never needed the least bit of help. But, it had frightened her and her emotions pushed aside all logic. She did not want to be responsible for letting the young hero die so she had tried to draw a few of the droid ships away. However, far more of the droid ships decided to chase her than she had expected. More than she could handle. Fortunately, Skywalker destroyed the control ship quickly. That left the droid starfighters inoperable, but not before they could do enough damage to send her ship spinning and knock her around. Despite the concussion she received, she would never forget what happened next…
“Blue Seven, can you hear me?” The voice of the young Jedi was panicked, not for himself, but for someone he did not really even know.
“Yes…. I can hear. Everything else is kind of blurry. I’m not still spinning, am I?”
“No… I think you may have hit your head. But you’ll be all right. I just need for you to get clear of the debris. I can’t bring in a rescue ship to get you otherwise…”
“What, it's too dangerous to fly in here but I'm supposed to fly out of here?" Her frustration continued to grow as she more fully realized her situation. "And none of the controls are responding. Today just keeps getting better and better…”
“We can fix that. First, open the starboard panel. You’ll see a thick yellow wire… if you pull that out and connect it to the second plug and then flip the blue switch and…”
“I can’t see straight. I’ll get the wrong one and everything will explode. You didn’t see what happened when I tried to repair the caf maker last week….”
“Trust me, I’ve being doing this sort of thing since before I could walk.” The voice of Anakin sounded confident, as though he already knew she would make it. Somehow it relaxed her enough to make it through the repairs.
Skywalker’s hotwiring instructions worked perfectly and all the ships systems quickly came back online. But the problem of the debris field remained. She knew she could not navigate out of there with a fuzzy head. Before she could worry too much, the solution appeared in front of her – Anakin’s ship.
“All you have to do is stay on my wing. I’ll guide you out of here.”
Over four years later and the memory of following Anakin’s starfighter through an impossible maneuvers to get to safety remained vivid. She remembered feeling as though she had held her breath most of the way. She did not think she had done that much beyond nearly getting killed. But from Anakin’s point of view, she had taken a great risk to help him. He had praised her in front of her superiors, which caused them to promote her to Lieutenant. The entire event was enough for everyone she knew to start calling her “Lucky” until the name stuck.
She was a tiny part of the battle and once the news had described the event honestly with her as nothing more than a footnote. But Skywalker and the other real heroes of the battle were all dead or disgraced. Under the Empire, talking about the Jedi in a positive light was treason and every effort was being made to wipe their names from the public’s memory. Even so, the Empire needed its heroes to convince the public that things had not completely changed.
The story of a Hero of the Republic leaving a very young son behind to come out of retirement to fly for the Empire worked well for publicity. She even looked pretty good in the digitally enhanced recruiting posters. The truth – that she had only agreed to come back after they had threatened her family – also might have made a good story. But it would not have done nearly so much to boost recruitment.
Lucky had once looked forward to the day when she could tell her little boy about how she once flew with Skywalker. Derek would have loved hearing the story. But the galaxy had changed and even accidentally whispering a Jedi’s name was seen as a threat to the Empire. She could never talk about the past with him even if she did survive to go home again.
Soon she realized that she would not even survive the month. No one said so in as many words. The words they used instead were: “Lord Vader has requested your presence.” But that surely meant pretty much the same thing.
She dressed as quickly as she could, struggling to pull on her flight uniform over her knee brace. Combing her blonde hair back with her fingers, she sighed. She wished she did not look like such a mess. It occurred to her that it was the height of silliness to worry about her hair when going to a meeting with someone who constantly wore a helmet. But really it was much better than worrying about how she was going to be executed.
A medic brought her a pair of crutches and then hurried off after giving her instructions where to go. A hover chair would really have been much nicer, but she guessed that would have been too much for a supposed traitor. The physical pain of walking down the hallways of the large ship was severe, but not enough to truly distract her from what lay ahead.
Metal steps led down to the area where Lord Vader stood waiting. Perhaps waiting was not quite the right word. He seemed to be looking in the opposite direction at the stars out the viewport. Lucky took a look down the steep steps and hesitated. She could imagine herself missing a step and tumbling down – crutches and all – directly into the imposing figure in black. It was not a pretty mental image.
Trying to keep a balance between caution and not making the Dark Lord wait too long, Lucky carefully hobbled her way down the steps. As she did, she became increasingly aware of the mechanical sound of his breathing. If it were not for the fact that she had already imagined him as infinitely more frightening than holos and rumors could convey, she might have fallen to pieces.
“Lord Vader… Lieutenant Klivian reporting.” Her voice did not tremble like she expected. Which was good. More than one rumor said that Vader hated cowardice.
“Indeed. Tell me Lieutenant, do you consider yourself a loyal servant of the Empire?” He did not bother to turn around. Frustration began to eat away at her fear. She thought that if he was going to give her a death sentence without even looking at her, he could have just sent a memo rather than making her hobble all the way down those infernal steps.
“I have always done my duty. I have risked my life a number of times to carry out a mission, milord.”
“And yet you spoke of the Jedi, the traitors, as if they were your friends.” Anger colored his voice and the word Jedi was spoken like a curse.
She gave an explanation that she doubted would dim that anger. “I said something under the influence of being wounded. The only time I ever met a Jedi was at the Battle of Sydow. Anakin Skywalker saved my life.”
Now the Dark Lord turned to face her. It appeared that this would be the end of her, but then he spoke again. “I had thought that your label as the Hero of Sydow had been something the propaganda department created.”
“The hero part of it was. About all I did was nearly get myself killed.” Lucky instantly regretted those words. Mentioning her barely more than average piloting skills at this point was likely to do more than nearly get herself killed. Not that bragging was likely to be a good option either.
“Your name was not always Klivian.”
“Klivian is my married name. I still went by Miradan for most of my service in the Republic.” She wondered why that made any difference to him. Maybe he just wanted to be thorough when filling out her death report.
“I see.” He paused and she supposed he was considering something. It was impossible to tell what was going on under that mask. "Do I have your loyalty Lieutenant? Or does it still belong to the Jedi.”
That was it then. This conversation was meant to confirm that she was in fact a sympathetic to traitors or something like that. There was no good answer to Lord Vader's question. He was expecting a lie and would detect it easily. And she likely was going to die no matter what she answered. And she would really rather not die being disloyal to the memory of someone she admired.
“Not to the Jedi, no. But Skywalker… I trusted him with my life and he saved me. And though I will never be an extraordinary pilot like he was, I did learn something even in the very brief time I knew him. I would have given him the benefit of the doubt if he had lived.”
A long silence followed, punctuated only by the sound of Lord Vader’s breathing. Lucky’s breath on the other hand, had stopped entirely as she waited to hear what her fate would be.
And again, she was left holding her breath for no reason as the Dark Lord continued to speak in that rich but slightly mechanical voice.
"Your latest commander reported to me that he had no idea where you had learned to fly like a suicidal fool. Yet I notice you are alive and the squadron you flew with completed a difficult mission with no other casualties."
Lucky stared in stunned silence while trying not to look stunned. It dawned on her that Lord Vader would not be spending this much time with her if all he wanted was to choke the life out of her.
"I have an assignment you may prove suitable for under your former Commander, Captain Javrell." She intensely disliked her former commander. A few months ago he had taken over the squadron she commanded and had her reassigned. He felt she was not as willing to sacrifice her pilots for the mission as she should be. But still, it would be worth putting up with him to be back with some of her old squad. She worried about them.
"There reports of a Jedi working with smugglers along the Rimma Trade Route. If these reports are correct, this one is particularly dangerous and skilled at staying hidden. Few remain that fully comprehend the capabilities of such a Jedi. Few would sacrifice all that they are to bring their squadron home safely. Captain Javrell is not one of those few."
She did not want to hunt down a Jedi. It was betrayal of what she once – and maybe even still - believed in. But he had her. Even if she had a choice she could not walk away knowing her friends would be led to their deaths.
"I won't disappoint you." She hoped he would not sense her feelings about the mission's goal, but she suspected it might not matter if he did. Somehow, unlike every other Imperial ranked above her, he understood what she was capable of when those she cared about were on the line.
"You will receive an order to report to Captain Javrell once the remainder of the squadron has assembled. You are dismissed, Lieutenant."
After she had made the appropriate salute, the Dark Lord spoke once more before turning back to face the viewport. "You may wish to take the turbolift behind you."
She really wished she had noticed that before.
As soon as the turbolift doors closed and she was out of earshot from everyone, Lucky took a deep breath and released it slowly.

I was so happy to get your PM. Earlier today I was thinking about this story (I kid you not!) and hoping that you'd update. Hoorah! I'm glad to see you're contributing a healthy crew to the OC Revolution.
The beginning was great. I like her balancing of what a really rotten day is. This line had me laughing out loud:
The surgeons had apparently entirely missed the fact that neither she nor her uninjured knee looked large, male, or Mandalorian.
Fabulous twist with the mumbling under meds. Ah, a brush with Anakin. I love the irony that that was the Jedi she mentioned.
Aw...
“Not to the Jedi, no. But Skywalker… I trusted him with my life and he saved me. And though I will never be an extraordinary pilot like he was, I did learn something even in the very brief time I knew him. I would have given him the benefit of the doubt if he had lived.”
The plot!!!
This looks great.
BRAVO!!!
I heart Lucky. She's fab.
It's great to see this fic back in production.

First, Lucky is absolutely AMAZING! her! And she obviously got on Vader's good side - if there is such a thing!
“I have always done my duty. I have risked my life a number of times to carry out a mission, milord.”
“And yet you spoke of the Jedi, the traitors, as if they were your friends.” Anger colored his voice and the word Jedi was spoken like a curse.

And she would really rather not die being disloyal to the memory of someone she admired.
Good answer, good answer!
Can't wait for more!

Wow, that was great! Very vividly written. I could hear Vader's breathing and feel the tension.
I eagerly look forward to the next update.

oh, i really like Lucky!
she's great. such a strong character. i like how she faces things head on, including Vader.
and a brush with Anakin, cool. it was interesting watching Vaders wheels turning as he figured out who she was.
great chapter!
