“See here, Palpatine…sir,” Tyranus squirmed as though referring to Palpatine as “sir” pained and disgusted him. “Our providers would be very pleased if the team didn’t stand such a strong chance at the championship. Now this business would not only leave them stranded leadership-wise but would also be a shattering blow to one of their most prominent members. I mean—“
So is Anakin going to be suspended or taken off the team? I love the convos between the teenagers it has a very natural feel to it.

This really good actually. (and I mean that in the way that every high school fic like this I've read hasn't been very good.) I can't wait to see your next post! (Could you possibly add me to the PM list? Thanks! ) There were a couple misspellings, and stuff like that, but I'm not really one to talk, seeing as I misspell stuff all the time. Anyways, my point is, its really good, and you gotta post again soon?!
Please??

A/N: Good news #1: New update!
Good news #2: Summer has been giving me plent of time to write (though net acess isn't always available) therefore updates should be more frequent.
Chapter 19
Lights. Blue. Red. Blue again. They flash on and off, in synchrony with the shrieking sirens, bathing everything in splotches of color. The police cars, the ambulance, and the fire truck come to screeching stops in a half circle around the scene. The burning remains of a new Infinity are scatters on the charred cement, sputtering electric sparks or melting and shriveling under the hungry tongues of fire.
A teenage boy sits in the middle of the wrack, cradling his dead father’s burned body. He looks up with tear-filled eyes at the team of paramedics jogging toward him from the ambulance. He lets them surround him and extract the man’s body from his arms. He stands aside, watching with strange apathy, as though in a dream, as the paramedics look over the body and finally determine what the boy already knew.
“He’s dead.”
They police officers come toward the boy and ask him questions. How is he related to the man? Did he see what happened? What does he think set off the explosion of the car?
So he answers. The man is his father…by adoption. The car engine exploded on ignition, or at least it looked like it. He should have been there too but he had lagged a little behind because the suitcase he had been dragging had flipped over on the curve and he had fallen behind putting it straight on its wheels again.
They take notes, murmur among themselves, and then ask him if he needs a ride home.
The next day the newspaper headlines read: US Star Fencer Qui-Go Jinn Assassinated After Landing At Carnegie Airport – Police Begin Criminal Investigation.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
“Obi-Wan? Obi-Wan. Obi-Wan!”
Obi-Wan jerked out of his stupor and refocused his attention on Mr. Windu. He hadn’t been able to keep his concentration all day. Actually he hadn’t been able to concentrate on anything since…it happened. When was that? Friday nigh? Only three days ago? Obi-Wan ran a hand through his hair and blinked tiredly at the map hanging over the board. What were they talking about? The Civil War? “I’m sorry, Mr. Windu,” Obi-Wan apologized, and was surprised at how hoarse his voice sounded. “I…sort of zoned out. Could you repeat the question please?” Obi-Wan winced a bit, waiting for the sharp reprimand. Windu hated people not paying attention in his class more than most other things. But no reprimand came.
“Boarder states, Obi-Wan. What were the crucial boarder states Lincoln felt that the Union had to have on their side?” Windu’s eyes were softer than usual; there was something in them that Obi-Wan disliked very much. He was sure it was something close to pity. That was what everyone had been looking at him with all day. Pity. The last thing he needed at the moment.
“Missouri, Kentucky, and Maryland were the crucial states. West Virginia and Vermont were boarder states as well but they weren’t as crucial.”
The bell rang.
There was a wild scrambling to put away books, pens, and binders. Obi-Wan quickly packed up his things and practically ran out of the classroom. He had a feeling that Windu might try to “shrink” him if he stayed around for long and Obi-Wan simply didn’t want to talk about it.
Now off to practice. That was something else in its entirety. He had managed to avoid Garen and Bant but he couldn’t not show up for practice. They might not have a coach now but that didn’t mean they could just stop practicing until they got a new one. Obi-Wan tried to predict the different ways in which his teammates would greet him. He took his time getting his gear together and heading to the training room. Obi-Wan changed in the empty locker room – Quinlan and Anakin had already left – and, taking a deep breath, stepped out to face his teammates.
His first thought was that the place felt incredibly empty without Qui-Gon there. Then he noticed the team. They stood huddled in the center of the room talking quietly among themselves. When they noticed Obi-Wan the talking died instantly. Barriss and Aayla couldn’t seem to be able to look him straight in the eye. Quinlan looked a little uncomfortable as he spoke.
“We didn’t think you’d come,” he said quietly.
“Why in the world wouldn’t I?” Obi-Wan snapped and instantly winced at his own sharpness.
Siri’s eyes went wide. “Obi-Wan—” She took several steps toward him but Obi-Wan held up a hand to stop her.
“I’m fine. I came here to practice. So let’s practice. The best way we can honor Qui-Gon’s memory is to win the championship.” His eyes locked with Anakin’s. He partially hoped that the blonde would make some snide remark in his usual manner. At least it would bring some sort of sense of normalcy to the day. To his life. But Anakin simply dropped his gaze.
---------------------------------------------------------------
“It’s gotta be aweful. To lose a parent like that, I mean,” Aayla said quietly to Anakin as they went through partner drills.
Anakin nodded without a word.
“I was afraid you’d say something when we came in…something snide.”
“What’s there to be snide about?” Anakin asked, parrying one of Aayla’s saber flourishes and taking a step back for balance.
“Shhh…keep your voice down.” She looked around for Obi-Wan but he was doing drills with Siri on the other side of the mat. “It’s just you two seem to really hate each other.”
“I don’t hate him per se…” Anakin said thoughtfully, dropping his saber to his side. “I just…I don’t get him. He’s the one who has something against me. Even if I don’t like him, I’m not that much of a jerk.” At Aayla’s silence he raised his eyebrows at her. “Am I?”
“To Obi-Wan. But then, he never gives you reason to act otherwise, I guess. I won’t judge, it’s your guys’ problem.”
They started up with the drill again.
“I agree though,” Anakin said after a while. “About how awful it must be to lose a parent. I can’t imagine losing my mom…I heard he was there too…when the car exploded and all. I bet the guilt is hard to deal with.”
“It wasn’t his fault though.” Aayla looked at him in a genuinely confused manner.
“I guess…” There was something in Anakin’s voice that showed that somehow, somewhere deep down he did blame Obi-Wan for, if not saving Qui-Gon, then for not dying alongside him. Yet he had buried that thought deep down and shooed it away, Obi-Wan wasn’t to blame; whoever wired that explosive was. “But I’d feel guilty that I wasn’t able to stop someone I cared about from dying. You understand?”
Aayla nodded that she understood, but Anakin got the impression that she didn’t.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Obi-Wan knew that things wouldn’t go back to normal for a while but still he expected to have more control of himself. The practice had taken a larger emotional toll on him than he had expected. It all came back: Qui-Gon teaching him the basics of fencing, Qui-Gon’s proud smile when he won his first championship, even random Christmas memories seemed to float up to the top of hi mind. Qui-Gon had gone from being “dad” to being “Qui-Gon” – when Obi-Wan first found out that he wasn’t his biological father but rather his step-father and, later, adoptive, father – and back to “dad” again. Yet, all through this roundabout of uncertainty battling blind faith in his father’s affection and place in hi life, Obi-Wan had always admired, and even idolized, Qui-Gon. Not to mention loved.
When practice was finally over, Obi-Wan watched everyone head for the locker rooms with a sense of relief. He didn’t want them to see that inside he was breaking down. He didn’t like putting his feelings out for the world to see, it was that simple. Why burden others with his grief? His teammates had already lost a coach; Anakin had lost a mentor on top of that. There was no need for him to make things anymore difficult for anyone.
Obi-Wan climbed up several levels on the bleachers and sat down with his head in his arms and his arms hugging his knees. Tears came with strange, awkward slowness. He was so use to not crying and taking things in stride that doing the opposite seemed foreign to him. What did it matter, though, if there was no one to see? What Obi-Wan hadn’t realized was that Anakin Skywalker had dropped back for a moment.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Anakin could never say if he had dropped back out of general concern – to make sure Obi-Wan, who was obviously not coming with them, was alright – or out of simply curiosity. The fact of the matter was that he had stayed behind and had seen Obi-Wan curling up on himself when he thought nobody was there to see. For a moment, Anakin couldn’t tell if the boy was crying or not and for that same moment, he wasn’t sure whether it would be tactful or not to approach Obi-Wan. In the end, natural compassion won out.
The blonde made his way to Obi-Wan’s side and sat down next to him. Anakin bit his lip, unsure how to start such a conversation, especially with Kenobi. “Obi-Wan?” He asked quietly. When there was no reply he placed a hand tentatively on the other boy’s shoulder. “Are…are you alright?”
“I’m fine,” Obi-Wan answered in a choked tone that betrayed him. He refused to look up.
“You don’t sound fine.” Anakin fidgeted with the holster on his belt, considering what might be appropriate to say.
Obi-Wan shrugged him off. “Well if you know, why did you ask?” Obi-Wan finally looked up, blinking rapidly to hide the tears but tear-stains had already formed on his check.
“I just…” Anakin suddenly felt incredibly uncomfortable. “I just wanted to make sure. I don’t know what it feels like to be you right now but if even I’m sad…it’s gotta be awful for you.”
Obi-Wan opened his mouth to snap at the other boy but closed it. He just wants to help. Obi-Wan wasn’t sure why the thought was so strange but hr had simply not expected to see such a genuine concern in Anakin’s eyes. Not in Anakin’s. It wasn’t that dreadful pity that everyone else seemed determined to give him, ether, but a genuine, compassion-driven concern and maybe even empathy. “I just wanna be alone,” Obi-Wan said quietly and looked away.
Anakin looked down. Something had shifted between them. Anakin couldn’t quite place it but it was somehow easier now to be there; the air itself seemed less charged. “Are you sure? I could…stay with you, if you want.”
“I’m sure.”
Anakin nodded and started to leave. When he was half way to the locker rooms Obi-Wan called out: “Anakin?” Anakin stopped and looked over his shoulder at Obi-Wan.
“Yea?”:
“Thank you…. For offering to stay, I mean.”
A small smile tugged at the corners of the blonde’s mouth but he didn’t dare let it blossom. “Yea, don’t worry about.”

Oh wow.
Just playing catch-up here with the updates.
This really is an amazing, creative story.
Fantastic scenes with Palpatine.
You write his evil character so very well.
I've always enjoyed the unique, AU concept of Palpatine as a Principal in a High School. Creative and hilarious.
And I'm in agreement with the other readers, too.
Poor Obi-wan. My heart goes out to the boy. The emotional tone of this latest update was powerful. I'm pleased to see a real bond between Anakin and Obi-wan here.
It was heart-warming.
Keep me on the PM List, please.
Keep up the good work.

Oh poor Obi-Wan!!! I mean, we all kinda knew it was coming, but it's still hard to "see" it happen...it must have been awful for Obi-Wan to go back to school on Monday, espcially because he was there when it happened... That end scene between Anakin and Obi-Wan was so touching though! It seems kind of awful that it took Qui-Gon dieing to bring them together, but I suppose the may have eventually worked out there differences? Hmmm... maybe not. Nevertheless, it was still a very cute and touching scene. Great job.

Obi-Odd13: Well tragedy dos often bring people together. And in a way, Qui-Gon dying WAS what brought Ani and Obi together in TPM. And now they really need each other because Ani is definitely feeling this too and Obi-Wan, no matter how much he doesn’t want to admit it, will need someone to be there for him. And we all know how compassionate Anakin is…
Palpy560: Hey, Palpy! Great to have you back! I wonered where you went. You sure don’t come by the A/O thread in the SWC anymore… We’ve missed you! I’m glad you’re still enjoying it and that Palps lives up to your expectations There isn’t quite a bond between Obi and Ani yet…but there will be one eventually
Lolly_Tolly: You’re now on the list I’m glad you’re enjoying the ride.
princess_of_naboo: Glad to be back! Thanks for sticking around.
Valairy_Scot: There’ll be plenty of touchy scenes to come. Don’t get mad, Val, but Obi is gonna need some “saving” for a while…things will turn around eventually of course. Promise

What - me mad? I love to see Obi getting some h/c - poor Obi needs it, what with his beloved father figure drifting away from him towards Anakin leaving him feeling emotionally abandoned and betrayed.
And if Anakin is the one to offer that compassionate caring - more power to him!
It'd be great if those really connected and supported each other, in my not-so-humble-opinion.
