Title: A Necessary Deception

Summary: After serving 2 terms as Queen of Naboo, Padme retired from politics...at least officially. Now, several years later a select group of Senators lead by Bail Organa and Mon Mothma have grown very suspicious of Chancellor Palpatine and have decided to bring in someone to keep an eye on him...his old friend Padme Naberrie, who is once again reunited with Anakin.
A/N: In this story, all the events leading up to ROTS have happened with 2 major differences. 1) Padme and Anakin were not reunited during the events of ATOC, thus no secret marriage and 2) The Jedi are allowed to date and marry in this story, thus no secret romance but don't worry, Padme and Anakin will have their share of obstacles thrust upon them.

Chapter 1
Bail Organa walked swiftly through the busy streets of Coruscant on his way to Mon Mothma’s apartment. He had just left the celebration at Senate Office Building where Chancellor Palpatine was still holding court after his miraculous rescue from his Separatist kidnappers. There was something very fishy about the whole debacle.
‘He certainly didn’t seem any worse for wear,’ Bail thought as he turned up his collar and quickened his pace. He knew he wasn’t alone in finding the Chancellor’s kidnapping just a little too convenient, after all, it was only a few days ago when Palpatine had introduced legislation that would enable the constant surveillance of the Senate building including the Arena, the hallways, and private offices.
The reaction was lukewarm at best. Then, Palpatine was kidnapped from his own office and as if by magic, all resistance to the legislation faded away. Now, most of the Senators were clamoring for the surveillance, after all, even Senators wanted to be safe above all else. Bail grimaced at the thought of all the personal liberties being eroded all in the name of safety. Something had to be done and soon, because there was no telling what Palpatine might want next.
There was something else that was bothering Bail. Count Dooku had long been the ringleader behind the entire Seperatist movement. And for some reason that Bail couldn’t comprehend; suddenly Dooku decided to come to Coruscant. Of course this was an incredibly stupid move because it wasn’t long after that Skywalker killed him. It was just one more thing that made Bail wonder if Palpatine was in fact in charge of this entire situation.
“Senator Organa, welcome.” Mon Mothma’s warm smile greeted him a short time later. “Please come in.”
“Mon Mothma.” Bail nodded as he walked past her into her spacious sitting room.
“Have you heard?”
Mon Mothma nodded as she took a seat across from Bail. “Yes, just before I received my summons for an emergency Senate session for this evening.” She paused, frowning. “It seems the Chancellor’s latest legislation is going to pass after all.”
Bail nodded in dismay and then gave her a serious look. “We haven’t much time to act.”
“We may not have any time at all,” she countered. “The surveillance is certain to be implemented immediately upon passage of the legislation.”
“We’ll have to get someone in right away,” Bail replied, brows furrowed in thought. The Republic depended on their senators to do what was right and he wasn’t going to let that happen if he could help it.
“We don’t have time to run the security checks…”
“I’ve got it!” Bail interrupted, his eyes widening. “Padme Naberrie.”
Mon Mothma gazed at him quizzically.
“The former Queen of Naboo?”
Bail nodded emphatically.
“I thought she retired from politics.” Mon Mothma thought for a moment. “Isn’t she doing relief work now?
“Officially,” Bail replied with a grin.
Mon Mothma raised a single eyebrow. “And unofficially?”
“Padme’s been doing reconnaissance work for the Queen ever since she left office.”
Mon Mothma’s mouth dropped open in surprise. “You mean she’s a spy? I can’t believe it.”
Bail laughed softly. “That makes her perfect for the job, wouldn’t you say?”

Padme entered the busy diner, scanning the crowd as she moved towards the stately man seated at a small table near the rear exit. She made her way past booths full of aliens of all shapes and sizes and finally reached him. 'What is this all about?' She wondered.
“Senator Organa, nice to see you again,” she smiled as he rose to greet her.
“Padme, you look as beautiful as ever.” He squeezed her hands warmly.
“Why did you want to meet here?” Padme’s eyes flickered across the run down surroundings. “I didn’t think Senators ever visited Coruscant’s lower levels.”
Bail waited as a waitress droid slapped two menus on the table before moving off to other customers. He took a deep breath and began to speak in a low voice.
“I’d like to hire you.”
Padme looked up from her menu in surprise. “Really? Trouble on Alderaan?”
Bail shook his head. “Trouble on “Coruscant.” He leaned closer to her. “The Chancellor is hiding something …”
“And I’d like you to find out what it is.”
“Ah, an easy job.” Padme quipped sarcastically. She didn’t really like where this was going.
Bail frowned, obviously upset with her response.
“Sorry,” Padme sighed in resignation. “What makes you think the Chancellor is hiding something?”
Bail took his time, filling Padme in on Palpatine’s appointment to Chancellor, acquiring of power and stripping of individual rights, including the most recent passage of legislation.
“Hmmm…,” Padme thought quietly for a moment. “Palpatine always seemed so humble and genuine.”
“He still does which is what has us worried the most.”
“Us?” Padme questioned looking at Bail with a surprised glance.
“There is a core group of Senators, including myself, who have become suspicious of the Chancellor,” he explained. “For obvious reasons, all our identities need to remain secret. If you take this job you’ll report back to me or Mon Mothma. We’ll take it from there.”
“Suppose I find out the Chancellor is some sort evil dictator, what do you expect to happen then?”
“We’ll expose him,” Bail answered flatly, eyes narrowing. “Remove him from power and maybe restore peace to the galaxy.”
“You think the Chancellor is keeping the Clone wars going?” Padme asked incredulously. She was finding it very hard to believe what Bail was insinuating.
“I know that sounds far fetched,” Bail admitted with a shrug. “And maybe he isn’t but at the very least he is taking advantage of the devastation and fear the war has brought for his own personal gain and he needs to be stopped.”
They sat in silence for a few moments, both lost in thought. Padme was having a hard time swallowing all of this. Palpatine was always such a good friend to her that she felt guilty just thinking that he was anything other than the honorable man she’d always known. It just didn’t seem plausible, but she never knew Bail to lie to her. And she knew he wouldn’t tell her this, unless he was absolutely certain something was going on.
“What would you have me do?” Padme asked, breaking the silence.
“Palpatine needs a new personal assistant,” Bail began. “I think as an old friend from Naboo, he would consider you for the job.”
“And if I find out he’s just what he appears to be, I’ll have betrayed his trust for nothing.”
“I find that unlikely,” Bail replied. “But if you do, I’ll apologize profusely and retire to Alderaan a foolish old man.”
Padme chuckled and cracked a smile. Then she sighed and sobered.
“You’re certain you want me to do this?” she asked quietly. “If Palpatine finds out…,”
“I’m certain,” Bail assured her. “The potential consequences of Palpatine continuing to amass more power far outweigh the risks of trying to expose him.”
“All right,” Padme nodded, giving in. “I’ll arrange an interview with the Chancellor’s office as soon as possible.”

OOO, quite the interesting start here.
I love the idea of Padmé as a spy and spying on Palpatine. I'd say she has her work cut out for her, but she can handle it.
