Poof has a love-hate relationship with the Saga. On the one hand, it’s where he has his shinning moments as a Jedi Knight on the Jedi Council. On the other hand, he dies during the Saga era, and that wasn’t much fun at all.

Title don’t really have one yet. If you think of one tell me.

Time Frame AOTC

Characters Padme, Anakin, Obi-wan, the Lars family, the Naberrie family,
Handmaidens etcetera.

Description Yeh i know there have been tons of AOTC rewrites. But this is not a rewrite as such. For one thing all the Kamino bits are cut out. It is an embellishment of Padme’s story & a tribute to the movie.

Disclaimer I don’t own Star wars.

Ch 1

I stand on my balcony watching Coroscants traffic. The many mired sounds; colors and configurations distract me momentarily from my grief.
Just this morning I have lost a friend, one of a long list of friendships lost either through death or distance. Entering the legislative youth program meant that I had little time for idle, childish pastimes. As Queen I was surrounded mostly by advisers, handmaidens and bodyguards. I take pride in my work but the price of success is loneliness.
But Corde, kind, pragmatic, fearless Corde she was more than a mere bodyguard as Sabe, loyal as she was, had been. Corde had been my friend, my confessor, and my sister in spirit and now she was gone. I had known that it might end this way. I had chastised myself for growing attached to someone who’s employment was to put her life in danger. But I couldn’t help it, call it foolish, call it human, it happened and I now wish sincerely that I had never dropped my mask of cool reserve.

Captain Typho joins me and rattles off his security measures.
“ The Jedi should be arriving soon.”
Just then I heard Jar Jar Binks babble and the baritone sound of men. I go to greet them. First Obi-Wan, - who has become so old since I last saw him!It is a welcome change. He is no longer the standoffish Padawan but a relaxed and confidant Knight. My eyes catch the tall figure of his Padawan,
“ Ani is that you?” I could scarcely believe my eyes. The sweet little boy was no more. In his place was a tanned, lanky and classically handsome teenager. The sort man Naboo artisans made sculptures of,
“ My how you’re grown!”
“ You’ve grown too grown more beautiful I mean.” He blurts out eager to impress me- only to embarrass by his clumsiness.
I felt his blue green eyes burn into my face. Inwardly I squirm beneath his scrutiny. Before I could stop myself I say,
“ Oh Ani you’ll always be that little boy I knew on Tatooine!”
A remark designed to put him in his place. It works and we move towards the lounge to discuss my unfortunate situation. Anakin, wrapping his cloak protectively around himself, continued to gawk at me. Soon, however he turned his attention to arguing with his master over the mandates of their mission. I watch in disbelief as the image of the sweet, innocent child is stripped away to be replaced by an arrogant reckless youth attempting to impress me with his show of bravado but failing miserably. I hide my smile as they bickered and offered a diplomatic platitude to settle them before retiring to my room

Dorme chuckled as she closed the door behind us.
“ Was Padawan Skywalker like that as a child Milady?” She asks as Elle begins to undo my laces.
“ No, oh maybe a little bit proud but certainly better behaved.” I reply as I slip out of my corset. Elle takes my clothes away and I sit at the dresser. Dorme begins to undo and brush out my hair.
“When I first met him he called me an angel can you believe it?”
“ I certainly can, he looked at you as if you were a goddess.”
“ I wish he wouldn’t.”
“ He is certainly very comely.”
Before I answerer I look up at the security cams. I had the feeling that he was there watching me undress and hearing me gossip with my servants.
“ Elle, cover the security cams and shut down the microphones. Dorme fetch R2D2 and inform Padawan Skywalker that Artoo will be guarding me tonight.”
Elle went to work and Dorme returned with Artoo,
“ Jedi Skywalker wished to inform you that he will continue to guard the room and will enter if R2 raises the alarm.”
“ Good. Lets hope there is none.”

Someone leapt onto my bed. I heard the thrum of a lightsaber. Glass shattering. Smelt seared flesh. I bolted upright almost clashing with my rescuer. Anakin was crouched above me his mouth gaping slightly as his eyes absorbed the sight of me in my nightgown. He got off the bed,
“Don’t move!” He ran off out of my apartment.
Dorme came in to comfort me but I sent her away. My emotions were running rampant after yet another attempt on my life. I wanted to be alone to cry. Cry for Corde, cry for myself, cry for Anakin who had changed so much from the boy I remember. Slowly without realizing it I cried myself to sleep.

I awoke sometime in the morning though it was still dark. After a futile attempt to sleep I got up, wrapping my dressing gown around me. I went out onto my balcony and began to gaze at nothing in particular, just as I had done yesterday. It took me a few minutes to notice I was not alone. That Anakin was watching me from the shadows of the doorway.
“ Do you often spy on you’re clients.” I asked and he came forward to lean on the railing.
“ Not usually but then they are usually not as beautiful as you.”
I nodded, not knowing what to reply to the clumsy compliment. He filled in the silence by informing me of the nights events. The chase through the city, capture of the culprit only to have her killed by a dart from yet another suspect who got away.
“ Do you often watch the view Milady?”
“ Yes it is so different from Naboo, so busy so bright.”
“ When I first arrived I use to watch it too but I soon grew tired of it.” He paused coming closer to me.
"But it is comforting to watch all those beings go on about their lives totally oblivious to you and you’re problems. Do you ever wish you were one of them? ”
“ Sometimes.” I said surprising us both with my reply.
“ I don’t I could never be one of them. My mother-” his voice seized up and it was a few seconds before he continued.
“She always believed that I was destined for great things. The Jedi too, well some of them, Obi-wan mostly. So the notion has gotten into my head and I can’t get rid of it.”
“ Sometimes I wish I wasn’t a senator. Life would be so much simpler, but then I think of the corruption in the senate, the precarious security of Naboo and other worlds like it and I feel that to not do anything would be selfish and make me no better than the lazy beauracrats I despise.” Only when I’d finish did I notice the bile in my voice. I smiled at my old friend, who seemed shocked at my bitterness,
“ None of us are perfect Anakin,” I placed my hand over his and squeezed it. To my surprise he grabbed it and kissed my knuckles. The sensation of his warm lips made me shake. I snatched my hand away and returned to my room. I did not sleep at all after that.

very interesting. I can totally believe that Anakin would have such an affect on her, for one thing because in the back of her mind she knows she's attracted to him and she also knows she shouldn't be.

The senate, a mob of squabbling beauracrats, corrupt, lazy and the galaxies best hope for stability.

“I warn you, if you vote to create this army, war will follow. I
have experienced the misery of war first-hand; I do not wish to do it again Wake up, Senators... you must wake up! If you offer the separatists violence, they can only show us violence in return! Many will lose their lives. All will lose their freedom. This decision could very well destroy the very foundation of our great Republic.
I pray you do not let fear push you into a disastrous decision.
Vote down this security measure, which is nothing less than a
declaration of war! Does anyone here want that? I cannot believe they do.”

If they hear me at all it is only so they can denounce and abuse me. My views are as unpopular as my hairstyle is uncomfortable. When I am finished and Naboo’s capsule returns to its bay, Pandemonium erupts. Mas Amedda calls for silence and is ignored several times before sanity is restored. The debate carries on for hours and the only fruit of my struggles is a thumping headache. A combination of noise, lack of sleep and stress. I don’t even notice the Jedi when I return home that night. I ‘m asleep as soon as I hit the mattress.

* * *

After a few restless hours of blessed sleep a Holo wakes me. Sly More.
The chancellor requests my presence in his office after parliament. I groan inwardly, all I want to do is lye in bed all day, preferably without a certain Padawan outside my door.

* * *

The chancellor is a known collector of artworks both ancient and modern. His office is furnished with them, giving it and the man a cultured air. I have mixed feeling about the chancellor. I have known him since I was a young Queen. For all appearances he is a kindly honorable man but his promise to clear away the beaurocracy and corruption in the senate has been left unfulfilled.
“ My dear senator a praiseworthy speech yesterday.”
“ Thank you chancellor but I do not believe you have called my here for that.” I sit down.
“ No I did not. The Jedi have informed me of the attack.” He paused, “ My dear I am ordering you to leave the capital until the culprits are discovered.”
This is outrageous! All my work will be for nothing! My temper rises to the occasion.
“ Chancellor I will not! -”
“ Oh but you will senator Amidala. For your own safety and for that of you're cause. I know how much you have campaigned to defeat this bill but if you die it will be all for nothing. The other senators will be frightened away from the pacifist movement and the Republic will have lost one of it’s greatest leaders.”
His words sooth me. Telling me what I want you hear. There is nothing I can do but accept his order with as much grace as possible. He seemed pleased with my response and smiled.
“ Now senator we have some minutes to spare let us talk informally. How are you finding you Jedi protectors?
“ They are very brave! Master Kenobi leapt out my window to catch the assassins droid!”
“ Yes, I have heard many of his adventures but what of his Padawan?”
“ Anakin? He has changed so much from what I remember. I barely recognized him.”
“ Over the yes I have known him he has often talked about you.”
“ You see Anakin often?” I did not expect this.
“ Of course, that young man is the Hero of our world and at only nine years of age! It would be strange if I ignored him just because he became part of a religious order. I am no expert on the Jedi code but I am sure it does not forbid friendship.”
“ I just didn’t expect…” my voice trailed off.
“ He is such a bright young man, not always first in his class but that’s because he’s impatient, but he is said by many to be the most promising Padawan in the History of the Jedi. You and I both know what a long and illustrious history that is.”
He looked at his watch,"Senator our time is up.”
We both stood and headed towards the double doors at the back of his office.
“ Thank you for you’re concern Chancellor.”
“ No Senator Amidala I thank you.”

I left the Chancellors office with as much dignity I could muster.
I graciously bestowed the honor of representing Naboo in my absence to Senator Binks.
My charade did not last long around Anakin.
I stormed into my bedroom.
“I do not like this idea of hiding.” I begin packing a few of my dresses. I can only take three suitcases. Ridicules! How am I supposed to survive with only two sets of clothing!
Apparently my bad mood was not enough to stop foolish young men.
“Don't worry. Now that the Council has ordered an investigation, it won't take Master Obi-Wan long to find that bounty hunter.”
“I haven't worked for a year to defeat the "Military Creation Act" not to be here when its fate is decided!
Why must I take it out on him? Was I too cowardly to be honest with the Chancellor?
“Sometimes we have to let go of our pride and do what is requested of us.”
Ha! He thinks he can lecture me on pride?
“Pride?!? Ani, you're young, and you don't have a very firm grip on politics. I suggest you reserve your opinions for some other time.”
Sorry, Milady. I was only trying to...”
Poor little boy, “Ani…” I put my hand on his shoulder.
“Please don't call me that!” he shakes it off and moves towards the window.
“What?” I follow him.
“Ani...”
“I've always called you that... it is your name, isn't it?”
“It's Anakin. When you say Ani it's like I'm still a little
Boy... and I’m not.”
I’m a person and my name is Anakin!
“I'm sorry, Anakin. It's impossible to deny you've...” I look up and up and up, “...that you've grown up.”
He grimaces and the façade collapses,
“Master Obi-Wan manages not to see it...”
“Mentors have a way of seeing more of our faults than we would like. It's the only way we grow.” I return to packing.
“Don't get me wrong... Obi-Wan is a great mentor. As wise as Master Yoda and as powerful as Master Windu. I am truly thankful to be his apprentice. Only... although I'm a Padawan learner, in some ways... a lot of ways... I'm ahead of him. I'm ready for the trials. I know I am! He knows it too. He believes I'm too unpredictable... Other Jedi my age have gone through the trials and made it... I know I started my training late... but he won't let me move on.”
“That must be frustrating.”
“It's worse... he's overly critical. He never listens! He just doesn't understand! It's not fair!
His petulance was such that I could not suppress a laugh.
“I'm sorry... You sounded exactly like that little boy I once knew, when he didn't get his way.”
“I'm not whining! I'm not.”
I smile at him but Dorme who’s just outside the doorway catches my eye and laughs too. Anakin turns to her and gives the stare of death. You put you’re foot in it this time Padme time for senator Amidala to make an appearance. I shoo Dorme away.
“I didn't say it to hurt you.”
“I know...”
There is a brief silence. I step directly in front to him
“Anakin... don’t try to grow up too fast.”
“But I am all grown up you said so yourself.” He came closer and stared at me intently. My heart leapt in my throat, no one had looked at me like that. Ever.
“Don’t look at me like that.”
“ why not?”
“ It makes me uncomfortable.” I turned away to fetch a shawl. When he apologized I caught his expression in my mirror. A smug smile that made a mockery of his words as his eyes continued to follow my figure. Angry as I was at his arogance I couldn’t help but feel gratified that he found my form pleasing.

The refugee transport was a cramped and stench ridden as was expected. Anakin, Artoo and I shared a tiny cabin with two narrow bunks, a set of shelves set into the wall and a low table.
After we settled in Anakin pulled out a pack of cards and began shuffling them.
“ Do you know how to play Sabacc?”
“ I certainly do not!”
“I’ll teach you.” He began to deal them out on the table.
“ where did a Padawan learn to gamble?”
“Obi-wan.”
“Obi-wan!”
“ Yes, I was as surprised as you. But it has come in handy on boring missions- not that you’re boring Milady.”
I laughed at his misstep, “ I hope not.”
He dealt out two sets of four and put the rest in a stack in the middle.
Artoo bleeped in protest, “ No Artoo you can’t play,” he replied.
Artoo squealed again, “ Why? Because you’re a droid at it would be against the rules.”
Another bleep, “ My rules that’s who! Now be quiet maybe Padme will let you help her. Now Milady the object of the game is to get 23 pure Sabacc or negative twenty three. The positive set trumps the negative set. When you are close to the number call out you’re hand. Anything above 23 or below negative 23 is a bust a pure zero is a bust too the idiot card has a zero value.”
I nodded and bit my lip, I have never played card games before. They were forbidden in the legislative youth program and I never had time for them as a Queen or Senator.
“ Now Milady we need something to bet.”
“bet?”
Anakin grinned obnoxiously and placed twenty credits on the table.
“Anakin! That’s the allowance the Jedi gave you! Its for food and shelter not gaming!”
“Aww come on Milady I ‘m sure you have more than me and if you run dry we can always pawn you’re headdress.”
“Not funny.” I grumbled, getting up and rummaging through my purse I placed 5 credits on the table.
“No No Milady minimum bet is ten credits.”
“Says who?” Artoo beeped in unison.
“ Says I master of the games.”
Exasperated I put ten credits on the table and began to play. I won the first game but lost the second and the third and the fourth and fifth. By the time the dinner bell rang I had gambled away fifty credits.
“ Better luck next time senator.”
“You cheated. You used one of you’re Jedi mind tricks on me.”
“ Never Milady they only work on the weak minded.”
“The weak minded and gullible you mean.”
He just laughed and put out his arm to help me up.

The soup was questionable. Orange goo with brown chunks in it and green bread. The company too was an unsavory mixture of the respectable poor and ruffians. Our attempt at refugee costumes was unconvincing. The dowdiest dress I could get Dorme to purchase was still a luxury item for many of these folk. Anakin too wearing the disguise the Jedi had given him for undercover missions had been called Master and gentleman once or twice. On those occasions I had seen his stoic mask fall and I look a satisfaction slip through. As a former slave the idea of being looked up to, which I have taken for granted for too many years, must have special appeal.
I could heard the other passengers whisper about us and once or twice caught them giving us sideways glances.
To these poor creatures giving up a child to the Jedi must be a selfless act. Giving the child an education and a future they could never dream of giving them. But at what cost?
Anakin picked at his food, “I look forward to seeing Naboo again. I've thought about it every day since I left. It's by far the most beautiful place I've ever seen...”
His intense stare unnerved me a little, I replied “ You were just a little boy then. It may not be as you remember it; time changes your perception.” A little boy, yes that’s all he’ll ever be to me nothing more…
“I think time has given me much more mature feelings to enhance my perception.”
No, Anakin don’t talk like that you’re a Jedi remember?
“It must be difficult having sworn your life to the Jedi... not being able to visit the places you like... or do the things you
like...”
“Or be with the people I love.”
“Are you allowed to love? I thought that was forbidden for a
Jedi?”
He struggled with the question. I sensed that he was trying to reconcile the Code to his own beliefs.
“Attachment is forbidden. Possession is forbidden.”
He tried to smile but there was a hint of bitterness in his expression and voice.
“Compassion, which I would define as unconditional love, is central to a Jedi's life, so you might say we're encouraged to love.”
“You have changed so much”
“You haven't changed a bit. You're exactly the way I remember you in my dreams.”
His dreams? Now that made me blush and look away. Seeking to repare his blunder he hastily added.
“I doubt if Naboo has changed much either.”
“It hasn't...”
“I can't wait to breathe the sweet breeze that comes off the rolling hills. Whenever I try to visualise the Force, those hills
are what I see.” Looking straight at me, “ I love Naboo.”
The way he said it sent shivers down my spine and butterflies in my stomach.
I looked away again blushing and wishing our transport would go faster.

Anakin escorted me back to our cabin.
“wait here, I’ll be back soon”
I waited half an hour with only Artoo for company. Despite some boredom I was glade for the respite from my ardent protector. I needed room to breath and think. He’s obviously in love with me despite it being against the Jedi code. But is he really in love with me or a creature of his imagination? A memory almost lost comes back to me. Of a little boy in a workshop.
“Are you an angel?”
Am I ? No, he’ll find out that soon enough.
The door slid open. Anakin came in arms behind his back smiling shyly.
“ what have you been up to?” I ask.
“ I brought you something.”
“ what is it?” putting out my hands.
“ Come and get it!” he laughs, taking a step backwards.
i make a move forward but he dodges me.
“ Anakin give it to me!”
He backs away again forcing me to chase him around the cramped room. We do several rounds until I catch up pushing him onto the bunk.
“ You win here it is.”
He gives me a package wrapped in dirty brown paper. I tear it open and gasp. It is a black tippet made of feathers.
“ Oh Anakin! It’s beautiful where did you get it?”
“ An old lady in steerage sold it to me.”
I look up in disbelief.
“The Sabacc money?”
He grinned impishly, “ she tried to sell it to me when we first came aboard “young man! Young man!”” he cackled in perfect imitation of a crone, “ a gift for you’re lady I have!” but she wanted fifty credits for it – no less. She said she wanted the money for resettlement. I didn’t ask how she came by it.”
“ I wouldn’t want to know. Oh Ani its lovely! Thank you!” I threw it over my shoulders and impulsively kissed him on the cheek. “but you could of just asked me for the money instead of swindling me.”
“I wanted it to be a surprise.” He looked intently into my eyes.
be with the people I love
“ th-thank you Ani. I-I’m-I’m tired now.”
I climbed up onto the top bunk pulling back the curtains.
“ Goodnight Milady.”

* * *

“No! No! No! Help! Help! Somebody please help her!”
Anakin.
He was having a nightmare. Thrashing about in his bunk.
I climbed down pulling back the curtains I grabbed him by the shoulders and shook him.
“Ani! Ani! Wake up.”
“Mom! Mom! Mom!”
“ Ani! Ani! Please!” I pulled on his padawan braid. He yelped in pain. Bolting upright, eyes wild he grasped my shoulders with an iron grip.
“Padme!” he flopped back on the mattress. I made a move to go.
“ No! Stay please stay.”
He tugged at my sleeve. He moved over and I lay down next to him. Resting my head on his shoulder.
“ what was the nightmare about?”
“ nothing.”
“ nothing?”
“ I can’t remember. Go to sleep.”
