Title: The Blood of Patriots
Author(s): CodyMonKenobi
Timeframe: 4 years after ROTS

Summary: The Empire drafts citizens to replace clones as storm troopers. This story follows one of them from initial training into war with the rebels.

I am just introducing this for now. The prologue is short, but the chapters are longer. Chapter 1 is being beta'd right now and I am currently working on chapter 2. This little tidbit is just to gain a little intrest for the fic before hand.

Prologue

It has been four years since the end of the Clone Wars, and the rise of the Galactic Empire. The Emperor has grown in power and has become a little more secluded. Even with the destruction of Count Dooku and General Grievous there are small pockets of resistance from former members of the C.I.S., to top things off there is growing dissent in the Imperial Senate. With the majority of the military funds going into weapons building, and the rapid ageing of the Clone Troopers, Emperor Palpatine has decided to save the Empire money by drafting a small group of human men to join the Storm Trooper ranks. If this project is successful, it will eliminate the need for clones, and the money spent on Kamino, without causing security issues.

Chapter I
Reception

The room was crowded, with men from every corner of the galaxy. All were pretty close to the same height and weight, all male, all human, and all white. Arness Greyhelm wasn’t very sure of the new Empire, and this sure wasn’t in his plans for the future.

The Emperor had just implemented a draft of young men to serve in the Imperial military. And the group that he had been put into was a test group to see how non-clones would function as Storm Troopers.

Arness sit by himself thinking when he was approached by another young man, “Isn’t this exciting. Not only do we get to join, The Emperor has chosen us to be the Empires most elite foot soldiers.” The young man said with much enthusiasm.

“Exciting isn’t the word I would use.” Arness replied.

“Yeah but we get to serve the Empire, we get to fight in wars, glory, honor, none of that appeals to you?”

“First of all, I have done my duty. I served in my home planets Republic Guard during the Clone Wars. There is nothing great about war.” Arness said matter-of-factly.

The young man looked disappointed, and then smiled at Arness while extending his hand. “I am Cort Wessiri from Rory. What is your name?”

“I am Arness Greyhelm, from Boz Pity, it is nice to meet you.” He replied while returning the gesture.

As the two young men spoke a soldier walked into the room dressed in white armor, carrying the helmet of a Storm Trooper. He had dark skin, with a shaved head and a scare and patch over his left eye. “Alright you scum. Take a seat and shut your mouths.”

Everyone immediately did as the Storm Trooper told them. As soon as he was satisfied he continued. I am Master Drill Sergeant Ernst, I am the perfect killing machine, unlike you breeders. The Emperor in his infinite wisdom has decided that you should replace us because perfection is too expensive, but I want to make it clear- I hate you, you are filthy animals, and I will do everything in my power to make sure each one of you fails the training. You are not good enough to wear this armor. Get your Kriffing bags and go to transport, we are heading to Caridia.”

They all did as they were told, and boarded the transport. One hundred men from all over the galaxy, hand picked to see if humans could effectively replace the clones. Cort followed Arness and sit next to him during the flight. “I’m sorry if I got on your nerves back there, but this is like a dream come true for me. I wanted to fight in the wars, but I was too young. Palpatine is a good man.”

Arness smiled at Cort and placed a hand on his shoulder, “Don’t worry about it my friend.”

Cort beamed a smile back at him, “So Arness, you got a girl back home?”

Arness leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes, “Yes, her name Drea.”

****

Two years earlier.

Arness sit outside in the courtyard outside the University in Courascant, staring at the senatorial building and drinking a cup of caff. He planned on going into politics like his father, who was the Prime Minister of Boz Pity. Arness was the student body president and was getting ready to leave for the day, but always loved to watch the sun set first. As he got up he was halted by an enchanting woman, “Your Arness right?”

He tried to stay focused but he got lost in her long brown hair, blue eyes, slender body, and angelic face. Then he blushed after he remembered that she had spoken to him. “Uhm, y-yes and you are?”

“I am Drea Maral, but that isn’t important. I am one of the students in the forensics department. I want to know why the school administration has canceled our study of the Jedi Temple.”

The fact that she sought him out for help, instead of a social call was a big blow to his pride, but he never showed it. “Well, from what I understand this is over their head. But if you would like to I could help you start a petition, then we can take it to the Administration, if they can’t help us then I know a few other people who might.”

Drea was still upset, but his words had calmed her, “I just don’t think it’s fair that no one has been allowed to go in there other than the military. I want to know what al happened in there.”

Arness smiled at her sympathetically, “I understand Drea, but if I am going to take this to the board then we have to follow protocol. I am willing to help you out as much as I can.”

“Thank you, I would like your help very much.”

-----

After a week they had enough signatures to take it in front of the board, but the board told them that the call had come from the department of internal affairs. Arness then made a call to his father over the holonet, who arranged for one of his friends to meet with the two students. The two walked through the senatorial sector of Couruscant. They had spent a lot of time together during that week and Drea couldn’t help feeling attracted to him as well. Not only was he handsome, athletic, blond hair, brown eyes, very smart, and she felt that all the time he put into helping her was very sweet. “Who are we meeting?” She asked.

“A friend of my fathers, his name is Bail Organa.”

“SENATOR…” she yelled and then covered her mouth and hushed to almost a whisper, “Senator Organa?” she said nervously.

Then the Senator started walking toward them from a parked Speeder, “There he is, and stop fidgeting.”

Bail smiled and shook Arness’ hand, “How is your father Arness, and who is this lovely lady?”

“My father is well sir, this is Drea Maral a friend of mine.”

Bail smiled and shook her hand, “Pleased to meet you Miss Maral. Arness I have arranged the meeting for you if the two of you want to get inside my speeder I will take you.”

The three flew over to the senate rotunda, where Bail had set up a meeting with a very important person. “You’re fidgeting,” Arness whispered to her.

“I can’t help it,” she snapped.

“Everything will be fine,” he reassured her.

Sarcastically she replied, “Oh yeah fine, we’re only going to talk to the most powerful man in the galaxy.”

It wasn’t long before the reached the office of the Emperor and they were let in. The old withered man was towered by Darth Vader. If Anakin Skywalker was the media picture hero for the republic during the wars, Darth Vader was now during the Empire. The sight of Vader made it hard for Arness to control his nerves. It was hard to concentrate with his loud rhythmic breaths filling the room, he almost belived tat Lord Vader's breathing was stealing the air from his own lungs. So he grabbed Drea’s hand and held it in his own to calm himself down.

“Welcome young Greyhelm, I have been expecting you.” The Emperor said through his rotted teeth.

“How do you do your majesty, I am here because our school has been forbidden to do a study on the Jedi temple, I have a petition signed by twenty thousand people asking that this decision be overturned.”

The Emperor looked over the list briefly then set it down, “I am afraid I must decline your request, the Jedi worked with many chemicals, some of which were spilled. The whole area is contaminated.”

Arness finally found his resolve, “Your majesty do you realize what this looks like? You are talking about a place where thousands of people were killed, and no one has been able to go in there to look it over. It looks like our government is trying to hide something. I demand… agh..aghh,” Arness clutched his throat.

With an outstretched hand and a booming voice, “You are in no position to demand anything, you are still a boy, and have no Idea about the working of the Jedi. You should be grateful that the Emperor is concerned about your welfare enough to close the area off. And you are most unwise to accuse him of lying.”

“Lord Vader, release him.”

“As you wish, master.”

Arness fell to the ground gasping for air, and Drea rushed to his side. They both looked up to the Emperor, “I apologize for Lord Vader’s behavior, I assure you he will be addressed, and I promise you as soon as the contaminates are cleaned up, then I will let you in for your research.”

:”But critical evidence while have been destroyed by then.” Drea told him.

“I am sorry my friends, but until it is cleared of any harmful chemicals, I just can’t take that risk. Now if you will excuse me I have a lot of work to get done.”

Arness was back on his feet and scowled at Vader. The two bowed to the Emperor and then walked out of the room. Arness took Drea back home, “ I’m sorry I couldn’t help you.”

Drea smiled at him, “No, thank you for everything you did. Is your neck okay?”

He rubbed his hand across it, “yeah, it’s a little sore.”

She went to touch it, and he grimaced from the pain. Then she leaned into him and the two shared a deep kiss. “Come on, let me rub some bacta into your neck, I promise it’ll feel better.”

****

Arness opened his eyes Master Drill Sergeant Ernst was yelling. “Alright you breeders have five minutes to get everything that belongs to you and get off this transport into your designated platoon area. Right now breeders, the real fun is gonna begin.”

Wow! Great update, Cody. Your writing is very well administered. I particulary liked the part where Vader laid a whooping on Arness with the Force Grip. I always like to see the Dark Lord stretch that power on someone. You'd think Arness would know better? tongue laugh Great start.

Thanks, it is a little rough, but I had to get it started and out or I wouldn't have done it. As for Vader, I really don't feel like Arness expected his tactics, the Empire is still new (only two years old in the flashback)I hope to add a little tid bit in every chapter, but not sure if I can. Perhaps expand a little more into his role in the Clone Wars latter on. but for right now, I want to establish some important realationships and go through the changes that duty to the Empire causes in him. The real trick is to still make you, the reader, still sympathize with him when he starts fighting the Rebel Alliance.

Chapter 2
Men Need Leaders

Arness sit in his platoon area with twenty-eight other recruits. Three Drill Sergeants all wearing there Storm Trooper uniforms stood before them. “Company, Attention.”

All the young men stood at attention. All were perfectly still, most were afraid to even breathe. The Storm Trooper in command paced back and forth inspecting them meticulously. The other two started yelling out names and passing out uniforms, which were camouflage fatigues instead of the pristine looking Storm Trooper armor. After looking his men over the Platoon Sergeant stopped and stood in front of them again. “I am Sergeant First Class Conri. Welcome to Bravo company 7th and 83rd training division. You are now a member of fourth platoon, the regulators.”

“I will turn you breeders into the Empires most effective weapons. Some of you will not make it through this training; others will not live long after. I am going to make your life hell. I can not do anything to change the Emperor’s mind about replacing us with you breeders, so I will take my frustration out on you. Everyone get down and push.”

All the recruits we made to exercise until their muscles couldn’t handle it any more, and then they just switched exercises. The Drill Sergeants walked around making sure none of them did the workout incorrectly.

The first week was used to learn tasks such as how to march correctly, different formations, and rank structure. All the while the recruits were exercised vigorously, or smoked. It wasn’t once the first week was near end all the recruits were issued a E-11 blaster rifle.

All the recruits sat in their barracks cleaning their rifles. Arness sat with his bunk mate Ryan Semaj. All the recruits shared similar hair cuts, no hair at all. Ryan was a cross country runner from Corellia and was probably the most athletic of the group. “I’m so sore I can barely lift this damn rifle.”

Arness half smiled at his friend, “All basic training is the same, and it was like this for me when I joined my home planet’s army. They will lighten up some in a few weeks. Just keep your nose clean and try to go unnoticed.”

Just then some one from the other side of the room yelled out “AT EASE!”

Everyone stood and gave the proper respect as the non-commissioned officers walked through the room. Conri stalked through the room wearing his uniform as usual and stopped at Arness’ bunk. “WN-382, come to my office immediately.”

“Yes Drill Sergeant,” Arness yelled at the call of his number. He then followed Conri to his office and stood at the front of his desk at the position of parade rest. Conri took off his helmet and set at his desk that had Arness’ folder sitting on it.

Conri opened up the folder and began thumbing through it. “You don’t like me do you Greyhelm?”

Arness knew he couldn’t give him an answer that he would like, but decided to try and appease him, “I have no opinion unless it is given to me drill sergeant.”

Conri smiled, “As good as any answer I could have thought of, but we both know that you don’t. You’re not supposed to.”

“Did you call me in here to find out how we feel about you drill sergeant?” He asked while keeping his discipline and not moving an inch.

“There is the real you, honest, forward. The answer is no, I didn’t. You have served in the military before. You fought on your home planet during the wars. You are the most well rounded recruit that I have in my platoon.” He said matter-of-factly.

Arness managed a smile, “Thank you drill sergeant.”

“Enough with the pleasantries, that’s not why you’re here. These men need leadership. I am going to appoint a person to be the platoon guide, and he will appoint squad leaders. I want you to be the platoon guide. My platoon will be the best, and I hold the platoon guide responsible for that. He will be the one who moderates the needs of these men to me. Do you feel like you can handle the responsibility?”

Arness sat thinking about the responsibility, and about his dreams of senate. This was the closest he would he would get to making a difference, if only for the few men that he had. “I will do the best that I can drill sergeant.”

“I thought you would; now I want four names from you for squad leaders.”

Arness thought it over, “For first squad I would chose Xid Kang, second Alat Undp, third Ryan Semaj, and fourth Cort Wessiri.”

“You will inform them of their jobs. I don’t want any of the recruits talking to me with out going through their squad leader and you first. We have training tomorrow; you will begin learning hand to hand. It is time that you start becoming weapons.”

“Yes drill sergeant”

“I’m done you may go now.”

Arness left the room and informed his comrades of their new jobs the rest of the day was spent uneventful. The next morning they all woke early and went to supply to draw their power gloves, the first part of their uniform. Arness called the platoon to attention and awaited Drill Sergeant Conri, who had to give role call to Master Drill Sergeant Ernst. Then they devoted the day to hand to hand combat. First they did holo training then they practiced on each other.

At the end of the day Conri asked anyone if they would like to try him. One guy, Rit Zajar from Telos who was an amateur fighter tried. They both got in their fighting stances, Rit threw a few punches that Conri either blocked or dodged. Conri was a master of Echani and quickly took care of the novice. Rit threw another punch and it was caught and Conri broke his arm at the elbow. Rit screamed in agony, “Take him to the medics, nothing that a few days of bacta can’t repair.” He said emotionlessly.

They practiced their hand to hand for about two hours everyday from then on. For the next two weeks they learned marksmanship. Once complete Conri brought the group together for a meeting, “This week breeders we are going on a simulated battle field. Your leaders will be in charge. We are simulating the Battle of Geonosis, our platoon has south of the arena. The other platoons will have the other sides. You will all be the same distance from the arena, the first platoon inside gets a ribbon for their guide on flag. We will be the best, if we are not the first to be in the arena there will be severe consequences. Do I make myself clear?”

They all yelled in unison, “Yes Drill Sergeant.”

****

The briefing was simple kill a hundred droids, mixed with some battle droids, and some super battle droids. Along with one spider droid, once inside the hall way to the arena there would be a special test, before entering, then once inside place your guide on in the center of the arena.

Each recruit wore a shock plate that immobilized them if they were shot in the simulation. Arness looked at all of his men and tried to reassure them. “Alright guys just stay calm and focused. Try not to do anything stupid and let’s watch each others backs. We can do this.”

Arness was calm, it wasn’t his first simulated battle, and for that matter he had seen plenty of war. He just wanted to do things right. All the platoons were staged in their area. Arness had decided to go in a wedge formation, and have two squads rush while the others provided covering fire. Then repeat the motion.

The room turned blue then in an instant the war was on. Blaster fire from the droid armies reigned down on fourth platoon. Just as it started two guys were down and out. “Get down, fire,” Arness commanded. They all did as instructed, and then he barked more instructions. “First and third bound forward,” Second and fourth squads layed dow suppressive fire while the other squads ran forward.

A moment later they heard “In position.” The other two squads along with Arness bounded forward. The platoon was moving forward nicely. Their tactics were sound, and the droid army was dropping like flies while Arness and his men gained ground. The Spider droid then showed up.

Arness had two men carrying rocket launchers; the others provided cover while they both took out the spider then continued on their trek to the coliseum. The men continued to bound forward until all the droids were dead. “Alright men lets take the arena, forward.”

They all stood and charged the Arena and then were in the halls leading inside. “Staggered column, keep your distances at least five meters, don’t want them tossing a grenade and wiping us out. Fourth squad watch our rear.” The hall seemed endless. They were almost outside of into the arena and one of the other platoon’s drill sergeants stood there. “Final test, there is a door to the left of me. Go inside clear the room and kill the criminal inside.”

Arness took three other men and did a four man stack. The first man kicked in the door, and the others rushed in and made sure their designated area was safe. The room was empty but then another door opened, and a Rodian was brought out, his hands cuffed behind his back. “Kill him,” Yelled the drill sergeant.
Arness lifted his rifle and pointed it at the Rodian, but then lowered it. “Drill Sergeant he is unarmed.”

“I didn’t ask you that you filthy breeder, kriffing kill the traitor,” He commanded.

Arness lifted his blaster back up, the creature was shaking profusely. Arness had him in his sights, then held and dropped his muzzle again. “I can’t kill an unarmed person.”

Cort was frustrated with his leader,” it’s just a dummy round, your losing this competition for us.” Cort lifted his blaster and fired. The shot rocked the Rodian’s head back and he ceased to exist.

They stared in disbelief for a few seconds, and then the drill sergeant rushed them out of the room. The Platoon got inside the arena just in time for first platoon stab their guide on into the ground. The simulation was over and fourth platoon had not won.

Pretty hardcore story. I like that you have a backstory to this with the flashbacks of visiting Palpatine. Keep up that angle. It's a great way to build up your characters.

Thanks guys for reading.

Chapter 3
Change of Heart

Fourth platoon sat in there barracks, the drill sergeants were in a meeting, but afterwards they would be paying the price for their failure. Arness couldn’t get the thought of the blaster bolt hitting the Rodian in the face, extinguishing its life. Then he thought of Cort, a naïve young man, it had to be weighing heavy on his heart. Finally he decided to go talk to him. “How you doing?” He asked while placing a hand on his shoulder.

Cort looked at him with utter disgust and then shoved his hand off of him. “I’d be okay, if we weren’t all about to get smoked. You’re a terrible leader, someone wo had the nerve should have been in charge.”

Arness was a little surprised by his outburst. “I made a moral decision and I stand buy it. I don’t have to explain myself to you,” he snapped back.

“At ease,” was yelled from the other side of the room. Everyone stopped what they were doing and locked up for the Drill Sergeants. Conri walked right over to Arness and just scowled at him. Then with a loud voice he spoke to everyone, “Your P.G. has just lost you a ribbon. I guess he thinks second place is okay. Had it not been for Wessiri, it might have been worse than that.”

Cort felt his pride rising for being recognized, “thank you Drill…”

Conri turned his attention to Cort, who was right next to Arness. He quickly cut him off, “Shut up private, nobody gave you permission to speak.” After satisfied that Cort was done he looked back to the platoon guide. “Now I want to know, why we came in second place Greyhelm.”

Arness looked straight ahead and calmly answered, “I couldn’t shoot an unarmed prisoner Drill Sergeant.”

“That creature was a murderer. He killed over twenty beings. I’m sure if it was someone you cared about you could have shot him. Not only that but he fought for the C.I.S. and we captured him with some documents that spoke of another uprising.”

“Let me tell you a couple of things privates. Whether the civilians know it or not, we are still at war. There are many beings out there who don’t like the new order, beings who are corrupt. All they want is chaos. Second you can not afford to hesitate, if you hesitate, then people get killed. Private Greyhelm, do you want to be responsible for the death of your men?”

“No Drill Sergeant.”

“I didn’t think so, now come with me. Everyone else barracks maintenance. I want to see my face in these floors,” he commanded.

Arness followed his leader down to the court yard. All the drill sergeants, to include the other three platoons were waiting in full gear. One held electro-binders. They motioned for him to step on a platform, when he did the binders were placed on him and lifted him above the ground. Conri stood in front of him wearing all his armor, save his helmet. “It is time that you be re-trained Greyhelm, I’ll make a Trooper out of you, and you will never question an order again.”

Master Drill Sergeant Ernst passed out shock batons and then stood next to his counter part in front of Arness. “All right you breeder, admit that you made a mistake.”

Arness’ body trembled he knew what was about to happen, but he couldn’t show weakness, besides he made the right choice and he would stick by it. “In a combat situation I would have done what I needed to keep my men safe, but this is a training environment, and he was an unarmed, defenseless prisoner. My morals would not allow me to kill him,” He explained.

Conri shook his head and then placed his helmet on his head. Ernst on the other hand laughed, he was hoping for defiance. “I am going to enjoy cleansing you of your mother and father’s breeder filth.”

Suddenly Arness felt shocks of pain all over his body as he was beaten by twelve clones. He couldn’t tell how long they hit him, but it felt like forever. Then it stopped. Tears streamed down his face and he ached all over, he didn’t remember screaming but his throat was soar and his voice hoarse.

“Are you ready to admit your mistake breeder?” Ernst asked him.

Arness struggled to breathe, “No…I was…right.”

Then the beating commenced again. Seconds felt like minutes, and minutes like hours. Most of the Drill Sergeants laughed, they were enjoying it. Everything inside of him told him to give in, but his growing hatred for the clones made him defiant. He would not give them what they wanted. Then they stopped. “How about now? Your body can’t take much more breeder,” Ernst told him.

Arness scowled at them all, his hatred was visible on his face, “You better beat me some more, you test tube lab experiment, cause I’ll never tell you what you want to hear.”

Conri smiled beneath his mask, he was proud of his trooper’s strength, but Ernst was angry and the beating was started all over.

Nine months before

Arness got home from school, the semester was up and he was spending it with his parents. What they didn’t know is that another visitor was expected any time. Arness sat at the dinner table with his mother and father. Arness took his looks from his mother’s side. His mother’s parents owned a resort in the mountains about a hundred kilometers south and west of the capital. That was where His parents had met and fell in love.

His father was a thick man with long red hair and a thick beard to match. Most of the time he was a sensible man, but he was quick to anger, that along with his hair got him the nickname “Fire Head”.

His father spoke to him about working with Senator Mothma, a good friend of his. He felt like she would be the best person to show him the Imperial Senate. While they spoke of job opportunities and politics, a metallic black protocol droid walked into the room, “Excuse me, Prime Minister Greyhelm,” it said in it’s robotic voice.

Hal Greyhelm looked over to the protocol droid, “Yes what is it G2-PO?”

“I am afraid that master Arness has a visitor.”

Arness quickly excused himself from the table, and met Drea in the foyer. She was amazed at the beauty of the planet. It had everything you could need, mountains, beaches, all different types of climates. When the two saw each other the rushed to one another and held each other tight. “I was beginning to think you wouldn’t come.”

She jokingly slapped him on the arm, “It’s your parents, I wouldn’t miss that,” She chided him. He rubbed his arm and smiled at her, “I can’t wait to introduce you to them.” He said excitedly.

She bit her lip and started rubbing her hands as they walked forward. He looked over at her and placed her hand in his, “Stop fidgeting, they’re going to love you.” She smiled back at him and laid her head against his shoulder.

Finally they made it to the dinning room. His mother was the first to notice them and she nudged Hal. Hal looked up, his big brown eyes watching them through his spectacles. “Well Arness, who is your friend?”

Arness smiled at them and took a deep breath, “mom and dad, this is my girlfriend Drea Maral. Drea this is my parents, Hal and Joleena.”

Joleena jumped up quickly. She wore a huge smile, “Oh please, call me Jo.” She looked over at Arness, “Son I wish you would have told us to expect company.” Being used to hosting guests, she quickly sat Drea next to Arness and had her plate sat at the table.

They discussed the details on how the two met, and how long they had dated. Hal and Jo sat next to one another and listened intently. Arness was their only child, and this was an occasion that would be burned into their minds forever.

“Arnie, I don’t know why you didn’t tell us of you two before,” Hal asked.

Drea who had been taking a drink had to stop herself from spitting it out as she snickered. Once she swallowed she began to laugh. “Arnie? You never told me you had a nickname, Arnie,” she teased him.

He sighed and then scowled at his father. “That is because I don’t like to be called that.”

Jo waved a hand at him, “Now there is nothing wrong with it. A lot of people have nicknames.”

Arness laid his head on the table and buried his face in his arms. He couldn’t remember being more embarrassed in his entire life. Then Drea placed her hand on his neck and began massaging it, “Don’t worry Arnie, I think it’s cute.”

Jo clapped her hands together in victory, “You see I’m not the only one.” She then began clearing the table, and Drea got up to help her. The rest of that night Hal and Jo spent bragging about Arness to Drea, telling stories about him from when he was growing up, and showing her pictures.

Later that night the two of them got some alone time and they sat out on the balcony looking at the four moons and the stars. The two were silent for a while and then Arness broke it, “Sorry about earlier, my parents can be a little different at times.”

She stared into his eyes and smiled, “Don’t apologize, they’re great. I had a really good time today,” She admitted.

Arness began to sweat, even though the temperature was comfortable. He continued to gaze into her eyes. “I know you still have two more years of school, and I am about to graduate. But if I take a job on Couscant we can make this work. The last year has been one of the happiest years of my life. I just can’t imagine life with out you.” Arness bent down on one knee and kept his gaze on her. Drea wasn’t sure how she felt, a well of emotions sprang out of her, and tears swelled in her eyes.

“All of my life I have known exactly how I was going to live, until now. All I wanted was to be in the senate, but now I just want you. Will you be my wife?”

Drea was now sobbing, tears rolled down her cheek and she fidgeted franticly. She bent down, kissed him and smiled. “I would love to be your wife, Arnie.” She said making sure to say his nick name hard.

Arness picked her up off the ground and spun her around while kissing her. Shortly after Jo came running out, both laughing and crying. “I wasn’t ease dropping,” she explained and then hugged them both. “Oh I am so happy for you two, come on we need to celebrate.” She rushed them into the house and went for their best wine.

***

Arness woke up in the medical center. He was being cleaned of bacta by several droids. The pain that he had was now just an ache. He was angry, angry that he had been chosen to join, that he wasn’t able to see or even speak to the ones he loved. He hated the clones, he was ready to leave and he decided that he would be the worst person there. If he made it so that they didn’t want him, then they would kick him out.

The droids gave him his clothes back and he went back to his barracks. When Ryan saw him he ran up and hugged him, “Arness, I didn’t know what they did to you. There were rumors that they kicked you out.”

Arness didn’t smile at him he just kept walking to his rack, “No I just got a little…re-training,” He said angrily.

Ryan just stared at him for a few minutes; something was different about his friend. “Well where ever you went, I’m glad your back. They put Cort in charge and I swear I am going to kill him.”

Arness still didn’t respond, he just lay on his bunk. When Conri came in and the position was called he just kind of nonchalantly moved to parade rest. But Conri rushed into his office and didn’t pay much attention to them.

About ten minutes went buy and then Conri called a couple of men to his office and they carried a holo-projector out into the bay. Everyone walked over toward it, even Arness. Once everything was set up, Conri played the news. It showed the senate rotunda, Senators from all over the galaxy were in attendance. Then out of the floor the Emperor rose on his podium. Palaptine didn’t address the senate very often any more, so Arness knew something was up.

Palpatine stood at his podium with Sly Moore; he looked over some notes and then began addressing the Empire. “Just over an hour ago there was an attack on the capital. Just moments ago a squadron of Y-wing bombers attacked the region known as the works here on Couscant. The death toll is in the hundred thousands. A group calling themselves the Rebel Alliance has claimed responsibility.”

“This is a group of criminals lead by corrupt senators who, want to go back to stealing and cheating the citizens. But I assure you I won’t let this happen.” The holo-projector panned back and Storm Troopers could be seen arresting senators as Palpatine spoke.

“I will root out these evil men and women and put an end to this turmoil. I am giving over more responsibilities to the regional governors until investigations are finished. We will crush these rebels, and you can continue to feel safe.”

Conri shut the power off. What anger Arness felt for the clones was now redirected. Drea was there on Couscant now; he knew she had to be terrified. All he wanted to do, was wrap his arms around her. How could these people kill so indiscriminately, he wondered?

Conri, for all of his faults seemed to understand humans more than the other clones. “This is what we are up against men; these people will do whatever they can to insure the failure of the Empire. I know some of you have others that you are concerned with on the capital, so I will see if we can get them checked on for you.”

Tension was thick in the room. no one else spoke the rest of the day. All they could think about was how the rebels would pay for the lives lost. And others, like Arness, prayed that their loved ones weren’t caught in the cross fire.

Okay sorry for the double post, but here is Chapter 4. I hope you all enjoy it, let me know what you think. I will make sure that I update this atleast twice a month from now on.

Chapter 4
Resolve

Arness sat in his rack, unable to sleep most of the night. He had gotten word that Drea was okay, but it didn’t calm him much. Arness was so angry at this Rebel Alliance. He thought of what Conri had said a few days earlier about the man carrying papers about another uprising. This was it.

A few years before he had watched along with most of the rest of the galaxy as the Jedi made their stand on Geonosis. He knew at that moment that he needed to help out in anyway he could, so he joined the Boz Pity Planitary Guard. He didn’t see a lot of action there, but he had seen enough. His company was under the direct command of Jedi Master Vos.

Arness wasn’t real sure of how he felt about the Empire, but he was damn sure he didn’t care for the heartless Rebels. The attack on the works strengthened his resolve and his sense of pride about being an Imperial. He would make these people pay for the harm they caused. He had never killed a human before, with the Separatist it was almost all droids, but droids did what they were programmed to do. These humans chose to kill innocent people, so that made them worse in his eyes.

***

8 months earlier

Lots of people turned out for the engagement party for the two lovers. The huge social gathering was taking place at the Mountain View Hotel, the resort owned by Arness’ maternal grandparents. Arness barely knew most of the people that attended; he dutifully shook hands with each guest. His face hurt from smiling so much, he feared that his face might stick that way.

He looked across the room and saw Drea and his mother with Drea’s parents. His father was speaking with the Senators from Corellia and Alderaan. He started to walk over to Drea when some one grabbed his arm. He turned and saw a slender woman who carried the weight of a thousand worlds on her shoulders it seemed. “Are you coming to work in my office after graduation?”

Arness held Mon Mothma in high esteem, but something about her was different than most of the other senators. He smiled at her and stretched out his hand, “I would love to, I want to stay on Coruscant for a while at least until Drea graduates.”

“I understand, of course being my assistant will mean that you will travel a lot, but you will be back in the capital most of the time. The Empire needs people like us.”

He wasn’t quite sure what she meant by that, but he wasn’t going to press her about it now, she just eyed him, but all he could think about right now was getting back to Drea.

Mon Mothma smiled at him and gave him a kiss on the cheek, “We will discuss politics another time. Congratulations Arness.”

He smiled and blushed, he had had a school boy crush on her since he was young, it was innocent, but it was there. He tried to play it off and nodded to her, “Thank you Senator.”

As Mon Mothma walked away Drea walked up. “Hey handsome, you have been hard to keep up with tonight.” She wiped a some lipstick from his cheek, “My goodness, we aren’t married yet, I have been away from you for just a little while and there is already lipstick on your collar,” She said tongue-in-cheek.

Arness blushed and got suddenly nervous, “It was nothing, we were just talking.” He said faster thatn he meant to.

Drea leaned into him and kissed his lips, “Calm down lover boy, I was teasing you. Besides, I am studying to be a crime scene investigator, you know if I ever did catch you cheating I could kill you and figure out how to get away with it.”

The two shared a laugh. With all the guests in Drea and Arness finally had some alone time. Arness looked over at his bride to be and smiled, “I never told you I could dance did I?”

She eyed him, “No, I thought you didn’t know how, you never would go with me.”

He grabbed her by the hand and start toward the dance floor, “I don’t like to. My mom put in me in lessons when I was about six. I did ballroom competitions. One of the other embarrassing things I would like to forget.”

The two began to dance and she was surprised to see him dance with such grace. She wasn’t bad herself, but she wasn’t on the same level as Arness. “What other kinds of surprises do you have up those sleeves of yours Arnie?”

He winced at his nick name, but had to admit it did have a pleasant ring to it in her sweet voice. He just smirked at her and dipped her low, “Wouldn’t you like to know?”

The two spent a good portion of the night dancing. Arness tried to keep his socializing limited to his soon to be in-laws, he even danced with Drea’s mother, Cecilia, and his mother.

It wasn’t long before Hal and Drea’s father, Gil, was calling him up to the podium. It was speech time. Everyone clapped their hands in expectation. Arness smiled waved to everyone and then shook both his father and soon to be father-in-laws hand.

Gil spoke first, though he wasn’t as used to public speaking, he had told Hal he didn’t want to follow two professional speakers. “Well, when my little girl came home and said she was going to marry a politician, I have to admit I was a little worried.” Arness noticed that Gil nervously rubbed his hands, while he spoke, and his voice wavered. He smirked at the thought, he knew where the fidgeting came from, he hoped it wasn’t hereditary. “But then I met the young man, found out who he was, learned that he fought in the wars. Being a keeper of the peace myself, I could identify with that. Hal and Jo you have raised a fine young man, and if he is going to be in the senate then I think we are okay.”

Gil’s eyes seemed to tear up, his face was flushed and his voice was cracking. He looked out at Drea, “You know every father hopes that his baby girl will meet a good young man, but even when they do, it is still hard to let go. But like I said he is a good kid, and I am happy that they found one another. Uhm, that’s all.”

Hal put his hand on Gil’s shoulder, Drea stood next to the podium with tear swelled eyes herself. Hal walked over to speak next, “I remember when Arness was younger, his mother and I must have tried to set him up with so many girls. But then when us old timers get out of the way and let nature or the force run its course then they do it all on their own. The day my son decided to join the Boz Pity Army, I was so proud. I didn’t think I could be any prouder, but Here I am. He is going to marry this fine young woman and add her family to ours.

***

Arness’ thoughts were interrupted by the lights coming on. 0400 by Caridia time, time to start training. He had made his mind up, he had to be the best there was, in order to make his family, all of them proud. If he was to be a soldier again so be it, once he was released from duty then he could follow his dreams. But for now he had to protect his family from these monsters.

They started the day off with a 10k march through the forest. They learned how to clear buildings, and practiced basic first aid. Later that evening when they returned they still had echani practice. Today they would take what they had learned to the dueling circle.

All the P.G. duties had been returned to Arness, and it was no secret that Cort was angry with him, so the Drill Sergeants decided to let them burn off their hard feelings. They each placed their DC-11 rifles down, the took them everywhere, and each stood in the circle.

Cort was aggressive he threw punches and knees at Arness, connecting some of them, but Arness was patient. He knew he would have a chance to make his move. Then it was there. Cort left a hole and Arness attacked. He went low and caught him off balance. He took him to the ground, where Arness was superior, Cort quickly got in the guard position, but Arness was to good on the ground. He passed his guard and mounted him. He pounded Cort with his elbows until the Drill Sergeants were sure he wouldn’t get out.

It was Conri who stopped the fight, the two soldiers bowed to one another. Cort scowled at Arness as blood ran from his nose and a cut on his left eye. Cort’s pride was hurt worse than his body. The two went back to where they stood and retrieved their rifles. That should have been it, but it wasn’t.

Cort aimed his rifle, put his bead right on Arness’ chest and squeezed the trigger. Ryan saw it all and just pushed Arness before it killed him. The laser beam grazed Arness’ left arm and rocked into Master Drill Sergeant Ernst, extinguishing the life from him.

Several trainees were on top of Cort in an instant, but it was to late the damage was done. His rifle was taken and he was sent for a long re-training session and then a court martial. With a little bacta Arness was as good as new in no time.
