It was early in the morning. Arness and Drea lay in bed, Drea sleeping soundly. Arness couldn’t sleep. He didn’t want to say goodbye again, he couldn’t handle watching her as he left. He watched her sleep for several hours and thought of their unborn child. He didn’t know what kind of father he would be, the one who was going off to war all the time he imagined. Nine years was a lot of time to lose when it came to children, that was what was left of his tour of duty. He climbed out of bed trying not to wake his pregnant wife and got his body armor on. He had his fatigues and a few sets of civilian clothing along with some personal effects packed in his duffle bags. He left a note for Drea telling her how much he loved her and how he would miss her. He cried for a moment then left the apartment. All the way to the Garrison he kept telling himself, it was only four months and then he would see her again.

I read this and kept thinking of Ulysses when he had to leave Penelope to join the war in Troy. It just proves some moments are so powerful they get repeated in literature and history over and over again

INCREDIBLE post! Great job!

Sorry everyone I have been so busy over here, I haven't had time for writing. it took me a while to get this out. I didnt even get my thing done for the awards. Oh well here is the next chapter.
Chapter 15
Rebel Hunting

It took no time at all for the four oh deuces to transport up to the ship orbiting Taris. Before leaving the planet they loaded all their gear onto a separate transporter to go up ahead of them. Then they held the promotion ceremony where Arness was pinned with his new corporal rank. Keto talked to him shortly after telling him, “Your main job as a non-commissioned officer is the completion of the mission and welfare of your troopers. As long as you take care of those two things you will do a good job.”

Arness knew he could do it; he had spent four years in the Boz Pity Guard as a commissioned officer so it wasn’t completely new territory. Once on the ship he assigned some of his men to help unload their cargo and then he, Keto and Sergeant Noman- the other team leader had a briefing. The Captain of the Ronto, the Imperial class Star Destroyer they were on was giving the brief. Captain Salina, a female NOC was the commanding officer. “Okay men, here is your brief. If you haven’t heard the news about what is going on planet side then I will tell you. Chief Fallon has sent three teams of Imperial Scientists to check out the diseased and they were attacked. Chief of State Kloua didn’t waste anytime spilling his guts. There has been several small arms exchange between the Rebels and the Black Vulkar. Fortunately the Rebel Alliance isn’t coordinating their movements. They are more splinter cell groups then they are an alliance right now. Some groups want to talk others are ready to fight. And some are more aggressive then others. The Black Vulkar wants to gain back control of Taris. We know that there is a rebel group operating some where in this area. We are going to continuous roves through out this system and the surrounding systems. We will do random boarding of non military ships and check their crew and cargo. Our risks are extremely high. We do expect to run across Rebel traffic. Do you have any questions?”

Everyone looked around waiting for someone to ask a question, but it never came. The Captain dismissed everyone but then stopped Arness. “Corporal Greyhelm, I read your file. One of the first NOC Stormies, and the very first to become an NCO and also first to be slotted for officer school, I am impressed. You are what all NOC Stormies are compared to.”

Arness flashed a brief smile, it was nice to get a pat on the back occasionally, but he was ready to get settled in. “Thank you ma’am.”

Salina wasn’t particularly attractive, she looked like a woman accustom to hard work and a hard life. He figured it was probably as hard for a woman in the military as it was for a NOC in the Storm Troopers Corp. “I know it must be hard for you being the only average guy around, if you’d like some of my NCOs gather in the rec room to play cards or watch holo vids. I’m sure it will be easier being around your own kind.”

“Thank you ma’am, I may check it out, but right now I have a lot of work to get done.”

“Of course,” the two exchanged salutes and Arness walked off to join his men. He and Noman shared a room, they didn’t want the NCOs bunking with lower enlisted. When he got to his room he found all of his bags dumped on the floor. Apparently he still had a way to go to earn all their respect.

Five weeks later everything was going as planned. Nothing was out of the norm but they knew that a rebel group, if not the alliance, was operating near their position. Arness and his team were doing a security check on the surface of Bandomeer. The city they surveyed was a series of strip mines. Workers from all over the Galaxy worked the mines, digging for the prized ionite, but very few of them were the native Meerians. The mining guild controlled the operations but since the Clone Wars, the Empire made sure to keep a watch on large guilds. They had a few B1 model battle droids for local security. Nothing that could cause a threat, with all the war droid tariffs in place the Empire was sure to stop another uprising of guilds and factions. The head mining officer walked up to Arness, he was one of the few Meerians in this particular mine. He was a little shorter than Arness, he slouched as he walked and wore spectacles. His long silver hair blew in the wind as he walked up. “What can I help you with Sergeant? We are always willing to cooperate with the Empire.”

Arness looked past the man who was followed by two B1’s. He had destroyed a countless number of the automatons during the Battle of Boz Pity; he wouldn’t hesitate to do so again. “It’s Corporal,” he said a little sterner then he meant. “We are scouting the region for Rebels. Ionite is used for many types of grenades and missiles. All I want is information. We know they are some where in this region and I find it hard to believe that they wouldn’t find an interest in your operations here,” He continued.

The man bowed low to Arness, a gesture that seemed to pain him. It was probably from long years working the mines Arness thought. “Please forgive me Corporal, I am but an old miner, not a soldier. My name is Ian Thorin. As a matter of fact we have just arrested a man trying to smuggle out unrefined ore from our pit. I was just about to contact the local security.” The man turned back to one of the droids behind him, “Captain retrieve the prisoner,” He said with a raspy voice.

The B1 gave a quick nod. “Roger, roger,” it replied in its mechanical monotonous voice.

“Do you suspect him of working for the Rebels?” Arness asked the old man.

The old man thought it over for a moment, “I am not sure. We have strict laws allowing prisoners rights to an attorney; he hasn’t spoken a word of this to us. As I have heard he has a lawyer on his way from Muunilist now. But I am sure someone in your position can move past this troublesome law and find some… persuasive ways of making him talk.” The old man seemed to be enjoying the thought of the man being ‘persuaded’.

Arness got a bad feeling from the man, but he would take any help he could get in tracking down the Rebels and a possible base. The Battle Droid Captain returned with a young Balosar male who looked as if he had spent too many years strung out on death sticks. “Here is miner Zelio Frolinan sir.”

The young man trembled in fear at the sight of the Storm Troopers. Arness looked to the Mining Officer and his guards, “Leave us, anything said by this kid is classified.” The man bowed again and motioned for his droids to follow him. Arness eyed the young man for a moment, “How old are you kid?”

There was a loud explosion from inside the mine where the workers blasted rock, Arness jumped and raised his blaster but then quickly lowered it. The aliens retracted his antennapalps, to reduce the noise. He quivered in fear, but he wore a look of defiance. “My attorney isn’t here. I am not saying a word.”

Arness grabbed the boy by the collar of his tunic and pulled him inches from his face, “They don’t have attorneys at war crime trails. I asked you a question and I expect some cooperation,” he said through gritted teeth.

The young man began to cry, “Please sir don’t hurt me. I will tell you anything. I am fifteen. The mining guild offered me a job, I tried to quit but I am under contract. All I want is out of this place; they told me they would help me.”

Arness sat the boy down on the ground, Deuce and Link, a new clone, walked up behind them. “That’s better. Who said they would help you? Who did you sell the ionite to?”

The boy buried his face in his hands, “a Rebel, he needed ionite for weapons. I didn’t want to do it but he said he would get me out of here as soon as they had enough, that I would be safe with them.”

Arness sighed, “Who did you talk to and where were they processing the ionite?”

The boy shook his head, “I promise I don’t know where they were taking it. He never told me.”

Arness was getting frustrated, “Who?” He screamed loud.

The boy jumped, “His name was Wessiri, Ensign Cort Wessiri. He told me that he would get me out of this place. That’s the only one I know. He snuck into the mines one day and we made the arrangements then,” Zelio explained.

Arness blood boiled at the mention of that name. He tried to remain calm, but all he wanted to do was track down the killers of Rit, and they were all with Cort. “When were they coming back for another shipment and what were they carrying it in?”

“Two standard weeks, they came in a Corellian Corvette last time. Please sir, I have told you everything I know, all I want is away from this planet and out of my contract,” The young man implored.

Arness motioned to Deuce and Link to detain him, “Well you got that, I am taking you off planet but where you go from here will be up to the courts to decide. I promise you they do not take treason very lightly.” The boy seemed to shrink in the two clones arms. Arness looked away from Zelio and back to his troops, “Take him to the transport and lock him in the brig.”

The two nodded to their team leader, “As you wish,” Deuce replied.

The two weeks spent in orbit over Bandomeer went by slow. Arness enjoyed a couple of card games with the navel crew but after a few games he realized he was distancing himself from the rest of his company instead of getting closer. He spoke with Drea several times, though he couldn’t tell her where he was at and what they were doing. Today Keto and the squad were on stand by. If the ship that they young Balosar had mentioned came through they would be one of the boarding parties. Keto, Arness, Noman, and the rest of the squad members waited the hanger bay when Keto got a message for all NCOs to link into the net to listen to what was happening. A voice came over their intercoms. “Corillian Corvette Odyssey this is the Imperial Star Destroyer Ronto. We have you on our view screen please shut down your engines and prepare to be boarded,” Arness recognized it as one of the comm. officers that he had played sabaac with a few nights before. The message was repeated only this time they were told, “If you do not comply we will do so by force.”

Arness’ blood was pumping. It looked like this was the right ship, and he hoped that Cort was on the ship. He wanted to see justice served to the traitor. The ship rocked, the after math of the onboard ion cannons being fired. An intercom inside the hanger bay issued a loud claxon siren and then an order for TIE fighter wings to deploy. “This is it boys, we are about to nail these rebel scumbags,” Arness eagerly predicted. The more and more fire fights he was in the more it just seemed natural and sometimes even fun. Arness and Keto watched a holo image of what was happening in the void of space, the Corellian ship moved fast, but the TIE squadron was more than it could handle.

***
Five years earlier Venn Rainey

The school building had collapsed but the battle was far from won. Arness was numb to everything around him. The small band of Boz Pity men and women watched their Lieutenant. Obviously they didn’t know that he was in ceremonial position just days before. Arness wasn’t sure what to do. He tried to think, but all he could think about was all the death he had seen that day. “Okay guys we need to move out of this position.” He looked over to the fallen school where a remnant of a wall stood. “Everyone rush to that wall in teams, we can get a better look at what is going on out further from there.”

The soldiers did as they were told. It was starting to get dark, but with all the fires raging it was still very bright. Soot filled the air and congested the soldiers. Once everyone was in place Arness pulled out a pair of macrobinoculars. A clone gunship was crashed a few hundred meters to their six, but there were no survivors. ARC-170’s filled came screaming by and in a hurry, before they were shot down by a hail fire droid. Arness looked back to his soldiers, who had a renewed sense of hope in their eyes. “You have any more rockets?” He asked the man from earlier.

“No sir, I used most of them before linking up with you.”

“Damn it,” he cursed under his breath. “Alright we are going to bound over to the LAAT, we’ll use it for cover. Some how we have to figure out how to take out that hail fire droid. Move” Everyone moved in their turn. Arness was the first to go so that he could take command as the others reached their new rally point.

Before all of them reached the downed gun ship the sound of metal scraping across rock could be heard. Arness had a 360 security set up and one of his men shouted to him, “Sir, we have three droidekas coming right at us.”

“Blast them before they stand up,” He tried to warn, but it was too late. The droidekas were in the up right position and their energy shields on. The men and women of Boz Pity fired but to no avail. They took cover but people were dying left ad right. The Droideka was one of if not the most feared infantry unit that the CIS had. It wasn’t long before ten people were dead, fifteen, twenty. “Sir, we have to fall back. We are no match for these droids,” one of the female soldiers told him.

Arness saw her rank as First Sergeant, “Where are we going to go? We have a kriffing hail fire droid in front of us and these damn things behind us. If we sit here we die, if we move we die.” Arness was more scared than he had ever been in his life. He had to weaken them some how. “Okay people, we are going to concentrate all our fire power on one at a time. We knock out their shields then they are just like any other battle droid.” Arness pointed to the farthest left droid and began firing. The remaining twelve men and women followed suit. After five minutes the droid lowered its shields and tried to escape, but it was destroyed. The Boz Pity Guard continued its assault until all three droids were just a heap of scrap metal.

Not far off lying on its side was a Single Troop Aerial Platform or STAP for short. It had clearly been damaged, but all Arness needed was for it to run. He grabbed a few personnel to help him move the machine and had the rest cover them. They didn’t run into any problems, the droid army was being routed by the ground forces but the hail fire droid still persisted in knocking out the air support. Arness had identified a few engineers from the patches on their shoulders. He pointed the three out. “Everyone give me every explosive you have, I don’t care what it is. You three quickly rig this thing with the explosives, I want it to make a big boom,” he told them while pointing at the STAP. Every one did as they were instructed. They had everything from frag grenades, to mines, explosive charges, to thermal detonators.

The hail fire droid had an ammo vehicle not far behind it, and every time it fired off its load droids were quickly reloading it. Those droids and the ammo hauler was protected by a platoon sized element of b2 Super Battle Droids. It took a little longer than Arness wanted but the three engineers got their job done. Arness started the droid weapon up, it whined and made a knocking noise, but it would do its job. “First Sergeant,” Arness called out for the top NCO in the group. The man was next to him quickly, “I want you to take these men, find a spot to attack the re-supply team. As heavily guarded as it is to will take some time getting through their defenses.”

The First Sergeant nodded, “Yes sir, what about you?”

Arness looked over to his flying bomb and then back to the First Sergeant. “With any luck I can slip through and they will see me as a friendly until it is too late. Our main objective is to take out that hail fire so that the air support can finish off what is left of these droids,” he explained.

First Sergeant looked at the ground and thought the young Lieutenants plan, “Sir, I think you should send some one else. You brought these men back into this war. If you die it is going to be a terrible blow to their morale.”

Arness became a little agitated. he didn’t have time to discuss his plan any further. “Top, while we set here and debate this people are dying. I want to make sure it gets done. You have your mission and I have mine. That will be all.”

The First Sergeant did as he was told and the men and women of Boz Pity were on their way. Arness climbed on top of the STAP. Its repulsors complained because of the added weight, but it was holding out. As Arness sped around the LAAT the ground was littered with downed ARC-170s and a few Jedi Interceptors. Right o cue he could see the commotion as his rag tag group of soldiers attacked the ammo guards, it was just the distraction he needed to make this plan work. He hung on for dear life as the wind swept through his skin. He was about fifty meters out when he jumped off. He tucked trying to protect most of his major body parts, but the impact of the ground broke more than one bone, and he skidded across the ground. He tried to recover as quickly as he could and though it hurt to do so he ran with all his might. He didn’t look. The concussion of the explosion threw his body forward. He could feel the heat; in fact his clothes were on fire. Luckily when he landed he began to tumble and the rolling put the fire out. His mission was success full the scream of ARC-170s was the sound of victory. In no time at all the sound of Republic bombs and missiles hitting their targets filled the area. Arness lay on the ground, broken but defiantly not beaten, knowing in his heart that the Battle of Venn Rainey was about to be won.

***
Above Bandomeer

Second Squad was ready to board the ship and everything was almost in place. A young navel personnel, another one that Arness had met in the rec room, met up with them. His name was Petty Officer Reeb Drainen. He walked right up to Keto, “Sergeant, the Captain has assigned me to your squad. I am a field medic. In case things don’t go as planned.”

Arness could tell by Keto’s body language that he was irritated, he didn’t like having plans changed at the last minute, and he didn’t want to have to worry about protecting the navy. “Listen here petty officer, I don’t want to protect you. You keep up, don’t slow us down and stay out of the way.”

He only nodded. Finally the boarding ramp was attached to the Odyssey. The squad stacked on the door and prepared for a fight. Arness heart was racing; he could feel the sweat beading on his forehead. The doors were jammed. Arness motioned to Link to set some charges on it. The crew stepped back and watched the door blow. Smoke filled the corridor, so they did what they were trained to do, they rushed in blasting. A few blaster bolts came in their direction but no one was hit. Once the smoke cleared they could see six beings on the floor dead. Reeb put his hand over his mouth, apparently it was the first time he had seen someone killed up close. “Noman,” Keto called his alpha team leader. “I want you to take your team to the escape pod area. I don’t want any of these Rebels escaping.”

Reeb looked at him incredulously “You are splitting up? How am I supposed to give you medical help? Where am I supposed to go?”

Keto eyed him for a moment through his bone white armor, “I don’t care.”

There was some what of a rivalry between the navy and the storm trooper corps. The two orginazations worked with one another out of necessity, and that was it. Each felt their branch of the service was the best. “Sergeant Keto, I am going to take my team to the bridge,” Arness informed him. Keto only nodded.

Arness hoped that Cort was there, he wanted to kill him. A blaster bolt whizzed inches from his face. It was close enough to leave a scorch mark on his helmet. The three men put their backs to the wall for cover immediately. “That was a close one.” Arness said out loud. Damn it, I almost got myself killed. I have to focus on my job, not Cort. Deuce threw a flash bang into the next corridor, leaving the Rebels blinded, and then the three rushed in blasters blazing. Arness felt pride welling up, this was the first time he had been on a mission with HIS team. “That’s what I’m talking about boys, lets give these Rebels the opportunity to give their life for their cause.”

His two subordinates laughed at his little howl of excitement. Arness and his men moved slowly through the corridor leading to the **** pit of the ship. Noman’s voice cracked through on the squad channel, “We have four detainees, and one of ours injured.”

This was a relatively small crew. They were here to load the ship and that was it. One man charged out of the **** pit, the pilot Arness guessed, and tackled Arness. He swung franticly trying to gain an upper hand on the trooper, but he was no soldier. Arness was on his back, as the man took a swing at him Arness grabbed his right arm. He lifted his leg up and got it around the pilot’s neck and slammed him hard to the ground. He still kept a grip on the man’s arm, which was now between his legs, and with a quick thrust upward with his hips the arm snapped. He screamed in agony. Arness lifted his leg off his head and then slammed his foot against the man’s face repeatedly until he made no more noise.

Arness body trembled; he hated being forced into hand to hand with anyone. He looked for his rifle, but Link was already handing it to him. “Let’s finish this. Shall we?”

The three men stacked and entered the **** pit. An older woman and a auqalish male stood with their hands in the air. Arness motioned for his men to detain the crew. “**** pit clear, no casualties, two detainees,” Arness said into the squad net. Keto would send it up higher.

After thirty more minutes the ship was cleared of all personnel, either by death or imprisonment. There was no sign of Cort. The navy boarded and began to comb through the ship. Arness was shocked to find out that Mahli, the man who he helped start the wellness organization to save his daughter, was one of the detainees captured in an escape pod. Arness asked to accompany Captain Salina to the interrogation.

An Imperial Interrogator sat in the room with him, Arness and Salina stood in a separate room watching the events take place. The Interrogator was human of medium build. He wore a dark cloak, not the standard Imperial uniform, and his eyes were yellow. He paced around the room cracking his knuckles the whole time. “How long have you been with the Rebels?” he said in a very exotic accent.

Mahli was nervous, anyone could tell that. “Sir I don’t know what you are talking…” He never finished his sentence. Arness watched as the mans face slammed into the table he sat at, but no one touched him.

The dark man continued to pace as if oblivious to the invisible hand that assaulted him prisoner. “Where were you going and who were you going to see?”

Dark blood ran down the man’s face. “They picked me up at Taris. I was supposed to go speak with Senator Bel Garm Iblis on Toprawa.”

The dark hooded man smiled, “I knew you could be reasonable.” The man looked over a data pad, “I see this ship belongs to the Corellian Senator. Tell me mediate between the Senator and the Black Vulkar?”

Mahli looked dumfounded and scared at the same time. “Sir, I don’t know what…” again his face hit the table.

“That is the wrong answer. If you cooperate then it will be less painful, I promise. I know that you are the spokesperson for the wellness group. I know that the Black Vulkar and the Rebels have had dealings, and I know that since the Wellness Group has become a big political factor on Taris that attacks from the infected have tripled.” The man stopped and looked the beaten man in the eye. “And I know that the Senator is somehow connected to all of this.”

Arness felt light headed, he remembered the man saying he would o anything to save his daughter, but he never expected this. And what was worse, is it appeared that Senator Bel Iblis was a traitor. He had known the man for years. Arness wasn’t sure who to trust anymore, but one thing was for sure, he was going to have to get to the bottom of it.

WOW! This chapter was explosive! I couldn't stop reading it for a second. Your wartime descriptions were impeccable, and the twist at the end was shocking to anyone whose been keeping up with the story. Though, it was a shame to see Arness didn't find who he wanted aboard the Corellian ship, but instead, found a traitor amongst his friends. Truly great update, Cody! applause applause applause

applause I loved your description of the Battle of Venn Rainey.

It was a clever move by Arness - what he did to disable the Hail Fire droid.

I enjoyed reading this latest post very much!

Aha! That's it. Hold it right there.
Pronoun trouble.

Sorry guys, I have been very busy. First we had a mission that took up a lot of my time and now we are a little over a month out from going back home, so preperations in kicking my ass. Thank you everyone who is reading this story, whether you post regularly or are a lurker I appreciate it. I wish I could have finished it before time to go home, but I promise I will finish it. It is very high up on my to-do list.

This chapter kind of spawned another chapter that I didn't account for. I hope you all enjoy it. it was a very fun chapter to write and it is going to put Arness in a bigger leadership role than he has be before, at least with the Empire. We are winding down on this section of the story. If I am calculating correctly then I have five more chapters and the Taris story is finished. There is so much more left though. this is already coming close to being the longest fic I have written and I am no where close to being finished. It has been a fun ride so far. Regardless of whether or not I get a lot of readers I am thinkful for the few loyal ones that I have. Soon I am going to try and explain what happens to Storm Troopers, at least the clone type, who are to old to continue. And I am going to open some old wounds for Arness. You guys have stuck with me for almost a year, if you can stick it out a little longer you won't be disappointed, I promise.

Chapter 16
No rest for the Weary

A week had passed since the capture of the Rebel ship, Arness was distraught. He called his father and spoke to him about Bel Iblis, his father seemed surprised. He was also questioned and reprimanded for his participation with the Wellness Group, he and his family had to cut any and all ties with the organization that was now being called a terrorist front. Documents and employees were rounded up and questioned, some detained. Arness was unsure of who he could trust at this point. No one was as loyal to the Empire as the clones of the Storm Trooper Corps.

Arness walked through to the dinning facility while he mulled over his thoughts. He was met at the door by Capt. Salina and the Four-oh-deuces Sergeant Major. “Corporal Greyhelm, how are you doing today?” She asked him politely.

Arness forced himself to smile, “I am okay ma’am. How are you?” He said as he kept glancing over at his men.

She grinned at him, “We were about to grab some chow. Would you care to join us at our table? I am sure you would be more comfortable with your own kind.”

The Sergeant Major seemed to take offense from her comment but kept his mouth shut. In truth it irked Arness as well. These troopers were the most loyal and elite on the ship, but they weren’t treated as humans. “With all due respect ma’am,” Arness paused and pointed toward his men, “Those guys over there are my own kind. I think I am going to sit with my troopers.”

The woman seemed as if her pride was hurt at being rejected and corrected by the young NCO, but she knew she was wrong to approach him in that fashion and let him go. The Sergeant Major’s eyes and face beamed with pride in his soldier. “Well said Corporal, you are dismissed. Enjoy your dinner.” Arness nodded and went to enjoy the time with his men.

After chow was over Arness slipped back into his room, waiting for him on his personal communicator was a message from home. He flipped the switch on and Drea was on the other end. He was so happy to see her face. Her stomach was a little more swollen than it was when he left, but she was still the most beautiful woman in his world. “Hey sweetie, I’m glad you called.”

Drea was trying to be strong for Arness she knew what she had to tell him was going to hurt, “Arnie, it’s your grandmother.”

Arness was confused, “What about Nana?”

“I’m sorry Arnie, she died last night. She got sick and the doctors couldn’t help her.”

Arness sat down his heart seemed to sink. His grandparents had been a big part of his life. With out warning his Nana was gone. He fought back the tears that threatened to show his weakness. “How is Pop taking it? Is he okay?”

“He is very upset, I asked him to come stay with us after the funeral and he agreed. I think being around a baby and having someone to talk to will help him out,” Drea let a tear fall from her eye. She knew Arness was trying to be strong, but if he wasn’t going to show his weakness to her she would let hers strength drop. “The funeral is in a few days. Are you going to be able to come?” She asked him, knowing that he would need some closure.

He let out a long, drawn out sigh and closed his eyes. “I don’t know. I will see what I can do. I’ll give you a call as soon as I know something.”

***
Five months earlier Carida

It was official Arness and Drea had just said their vows and were now husband and wife. Arness wore his dress uniform and Drea wore a long elegant white bridal dress that had belonged to her mother. Arness’ grandparents came and hugged their grandson and the newest edition to the family. “I am so happy for the two of you,” His grandmother told them.

Arness hugged her, “Thanks nana.”

“It’s a good thing the army has you in such good shape, I would hate for you to disappoint your new wife during the consummation. Make sure you eat some fruit, it will make it taste better.” Kulia told them.

Arness and Drea both blushed, neither one of them expected to hear the old woman talking to them about sex, “Nana, I really don’t feel comfortable talking to you about this.”

But the blunt elderly woman wouldn’t let their shyness deter her. “Well we are all adults her. What’s the matter you don’t think the old woman still has it?”

Dalain, who stood behind her, patted her on the back side, “You sure do momma,” he said as he gave a wink to the young couple. “But we have to take it easy; at my age she is liable to give me a heart attack.”

Drea laughed at the couple, “Pop, I don’t need to know this stuff. This is not something I wanted to think about you two. You’re weird,” Arness told them.

Kulia just waved a dismissive hand toward her grandson. “Fine, fine, I won’t gross you out with stories. I am sure you will do fine, you got the young stamina. Now you need to go make me some great grandbabies. But first let’s go dance sonny.”

Arness and his grandmother danced with each other, “I’m sorry for embarrassing you. That is just my way of having fun.” She looked out as if scanning memories of a long and fruitful past. “I remember my wedding day, I was so nervous. But you know, I love your pop more today than I did all those years ago. He is my sweetheart. We have had made a lot of wonderful memories together. I know you and Drea will do the same.”

Arness smiled at her, “Thanks Nana, I will do my best.”

“I know you will my boy. Remember it is the little things that you do for us that makes our heart flutter, a flower for no reason, or a love letter by the bed when you go to work. You can spend all the money in the galaxy on us and those little things will stick with us more than any of it. We girls are a sucker for a romantic. Just remember the little things.” She told him as they swayed to the music. “And being good in the sack doesn’t hurt at all,” She teased.

Arness laughed and tried not to blush. “Okay Nana, I won’t forget” he promised her.

***

Arness fought back his emotions, he had just let SSG. Keto know of his home problems, and he suggested to him to go see the Sergeant Major. Arness was about to leave when his communicator went off again. Arness assumed that it was his parents but when the face before him flashed on his screen he couldn’t hide his surprise. “Senator Bel Iblis, it is very bold of you to try to contact me. Especially after the allegations against you,” he said through gritted teeth. Arness pressed a button on his comm. unit, to let the traffic controllers know to track the call.

“Arness things are not as they appear. Yes, I am part of the Rebellion, but if you don’t agree with us then you obviously can’t see the broad picture. The Emperor is a tyrant. But I didn’t call you to try and change your mind, at least not yet. I want you to know that I am sorry about your loss. I didn’t want to risk getting your father mixed into this. I know you are probably having me tracked. But I want you and your family to know that I am still your friend, and whatever happens this is not personal.” The senator tried to reassure him from the other side of the monitor.

Arness’ anger was clearly visible. “You have some nerve, traitor. We are going to find you and Wessiri, and the two of you are going to spend a very long time in a spice mine somewhere. You make sure Cort knows I am coming for him. And you are wrong, this is very personal. I better not see you anywhere near my family.”

Garm frowned, he was noticeably disappointed in Arness, but there was no changing the young trooper’s mind. “If that is how it is young man, if you are willing to throw a friendship that has lasted most of your life away then I am sure you know where to find us.”

Arness turned off the monitor and proceeded to the Sergeant Major’s office. He was met by an Imperial Intel Officer. “You did well, Greyhelm. We pinned their exact location.”

Arness nodded, “I have to see the Sergeant Major of my battalion.”

The officer patted him on the back, “Follow me, he is in a briefing, but they will want to know this information.”

The two briskly walked to the briefing chamber. All of the top officers and the Sergeant Major were present. They seemed a little perturbed by the interruption. Capt. Salina raised an inquisitive eyebrow and all eyes were suddenly on Arness and the young Navel Intel Officer. “Forgive my intrusion ma’am, but we have some new developments.” The female captain just eyed the two for a moment before the officer continued. “Senator Bel Iblis has tried to contact Corporal Greyhelm. He immediately signaled us and we have pin pointed the Rebels exact location.

Some of the officers seemed excited by the news; the captain didn’t seem effected at all. She looked over toward the aging clone. He wore many battle scares and his thin cut silver hair sparkled in the light, “He is baiting us,” the top NCO of the four-oh-deuces announced. “He wouldn’t risk his men for no reason.”

Salina pursed her lips together, “I concur, however, I am sure he is unaware of the fifth fleet waiting just outside of Maridun. Tell me ensign; were they at Toprawa like the prisoner said?”

“No ma’am, the transmission originated from Helska 2. But it didn’t come from the surface,” He explained to his superior.

The Sergeant Major stared off in the distance; he looked as if he was trying to process the information. “No, they may be waiting for us at Helska, but that isn’t where the Rebel base is. Could be any where though, Sernpidal, Thila, Dantooine, Belkadan. If we go into this ma’am we are playing their game. We don’t have enough intelligence to know what we are running into.”

“They can’t possibly expect a victory. We will send half of the fleet to sweep the area. Dantooine is to far out, I doubt that they are working out of there,” She paused as if to think for a moment. “I would imagine they are hiding somewhere along the trade routes. Sergeant Major you and your men will be in charge of a ground assault. The rest of the fleet will assault from space. You are all dismissed.” The woman sounded off with her authority in a manner that said she would not be challenged.

Arness could tell that the Sergeant Major didn’t approve of her plan, but he would not question her orders. He was not programmed to. Arness followed him out a step behind him. “You did well Greyhelm, If only the Corp was running the show like we did in the old days.” Arness didn’t respond, and the older NCO didn’t really expect one. “Well that’s what they get for putting a woman in charge. This won’t be a pretty victory.”

Arness had no doubt that the Empire would win the battle. The Rebellion had a few victories in minor skirmishes, but never anything major. “If I may Sergeant Major, I need a few minutes of your time.” The aging clone stopped dead in his tracks and turned to face Arness. He had a hard face, but it was one Arness was used to looking at. “I have had a death in my family. I know the timing is bad, but if there is anyway I would like a few days to say goodbye.”

Arness thought he saw something he had never seen in a clone before, sympathy, it was in the old eyes, eyes that had seen to much death in their lifetime. “I am sorry for the loss of your?”

“My grandmother Sergeant Major,” Arness finished for him.

“I see.” The old clone rubbed his chin for a moment before answering. “Greyhelm I have earned a lot of respect for you. What you said to the captain in the chow hall made me proud. You are a fine soldier. I am sorry, but I am going to have to deny your request. We are about to be in the middle of a major battle and I am going to need good NCOs to lead my troops.”

Arness tried not to show the pain on his face, but he knew that he would be denied. Clones didn’t understand family, “I understand.”

“No, I don’t think you do. I understand that your family is important, but I have to put the mission first. My first battle, I was a young sergeant. We followed our Jedi Generals into battle just as we were told. Then I saw something that I didn’t expect. I saw my father fighting – fighting for the wrong side. He and one of the top Generals fought in the middle of the arena and I saw my commanding officer kill my father.”

“I know how torn you are right now, and I know how difficult it is to lose your family. But I had to carry on with my mission. I couldn’t stop to mourn him that came later. If this battle wasn’t just around the corner I would be happy to send you where you belong. But right now I need you. I won’t ask you to do anything I haven’t done already.” The old clone explained to him, his eyes misted from the painful memory.

Arness stood a little taller and came to respect the man even more. “Yes Sergeant Major, I will do what I must.”

The old clone’s face beemed with pride from the young man’s resolve and placed a firm hand on his shoulder. “I know you will Corporal Greyhelm. I know you will make us proud.

Imperial Gunship – Skies above Helska

The gunships were already deployed three squads of TIE fighters and TIE bombers paved the way and softened the ground forces. The side panel opened and Arness could see AT-ATs and AT-TEs already assaulting the Rebel forces. The Rebels space fleet consisted of an assortment of ships from Corellian, Mon Cal, Dreadnaughts, and none of them belonging to a single definitive system. Garm Bel Iblis was leading the assault, in space for the Rebels.

The ground forces he could tell were unorganized, they all scattered in all different directions. But they appeared to be guarding a industrial plant of some type. Probably where they were processing the ionite Arness guessed. A stray rocket shot right toward their gunship, the men got down as low as they could, and just by luck it screamed through both canopies, but one soldier fell out behind it. “Pilot you better land this damn thing before you kill anymore of my men,” Keto yelled to the front.

The gunship quickly descended toward the earth below. All the men quickly jumped out of the ship before it touched down and ran for the nearest cover. Reeb, the navel medic joined them once again. Keto quickly scanned the area then looked back to his team leaders. “Arness, Noman, I don’t care how we do it, but I want to be the first kriffing squad in that ionite facility,” The squad leader yelled to be heard over the blaster fire.

They both nodded their acknowledgement. The rebel forces holed themselves up in prefabricated bunkers outside the plant, backed up by three ion cannons to the rear of them. TIE fighters engaged the Rebel A-wings and X-wings in the skies above.

The four remaining walkers and two scout walkers formed wedge formation and tried to target the ion cannons but had to worry about star fighters as well. “If those fly boys don’t do something about the fighters we are going to lose our walkers,” Arness observed.

“You let them worry about that, I want that plant.” Keto yelled.

Arness knew that he couldn’t just worry about the plant though. If they lost the walkers the Rebel ground forces wouldn’t think twice about coming out of their holes. “Sergeant, if we can flank them then my team can work on the bunkers and ion cannons. That will leave the walkers to finish off the strays while Noman and his team take the plant. We can regroup once the cannons are taken care of.”

Keto was stared at Arness for a moment, he wasn’t used to having his orders questioned, but he knew Arness was right. “Alright Corporal, you take care of the cannons, and do what you can to the bunkers. We’ll meet you inside.”

Arness shook his head and they all gave one another a pat on the back for good luck. Arness hoped that Cort was in one of those bunkers. They cut around the back of the walkers. To the west of the battlefield a couple of hundred meters out was some thick vegetation. To their surprise they found a run off drain running into a concealed pool. “We are taking that route,” Keto told Arness, “good luck.”

Arness nodded. Reeb stuck with Arness as they continued to march through the foliage. They found a forward observer in the bush calling out coordinates to a Rebel artillery team. Deuce slammed his rifle against the man’s skull and it made a sickening crunch. He hit him several more times till he was sure that he was dead. Arness stopped for a moment. “Reeb, you know how to use a radio?”

“Yeah, sure I do. Who doesn’t?” The Navel Medic looked at Arness like he was nuts.

Arness turned quickly. “Link, pick a ion cannon and get me the coordinates, we are only going to get on shot off before they find out what’s going off so make it count. Then get ready to make a run for it.”

Link pulled up his macrobinoculars and used the laser guidance to determine the grid. He shouted off the numbers and Reeb was calling “fire for effect” right behind him. The grabbed the radio and took off as soon as the transmission was finished. Arness watched the direction of the plant and saw the blast before he felt the concussion. Someone on the radio was quick to call adjust fire. Moments later the place where they had found the radio was lit up with artillery fire. “Greyhelm, you alive?” Keto asked over the squad net.

He took a quick look around in mid-stride, “All present and accounted for Sarge. Just dodging a little artillery is all.”

“Roger, well our exit collapsed so it looks like it is defiantly going to be the plant that we exit from,” he called back.

“Roger, out,” Arness and his team plus Reem didn’t slow at all. Reem struggled to keep up with the troopers, but he didn’t slow them down a bit. They had the ion cannons directly in sight. Arness patted Link on the back. The artillery strike completely destroyed one cannon and bunker and one other cannon was damaged. The walkers were assaulting the unprotected bunker.

“All Four-oh-deuce elements, this is zero two,” the Sergeant Majors call sign came over the command net. “Be advised the Ronto has been lost, the boys up stairs are needing some help so we have to clean this up quick so the birds down here can help them out.”

Arness began thinking of all the men and women on board the ship, then he looked over at the medic who had called the place home for the last couple of years. His face was as pale as the armor Arness wore. “Alright Reem, I know you’re hurting. Lets do our job so our friends upstairs can get some help.”

The medic didn’t speak he only nodded. His eyes glazed over and he fought the tears that welled up in his eyes. Arness’ focus left the medic when he heard blaster fire coming from inside the plant. “They made it. Let’s finish this.”

They made it to the final bunker, Deuce tossed in a frag grenade, but when they went in there were only parts of droids that controlled an automated firing mechanism for the weapons systems. On the floor of the bunker was a trap door. Arness turned had a sinking feeling in his stomach. He turned back toward the plant and to his amazement he saw Cort and five others running toward the bunker. “Cort!”

Cort stopped, he remembered Arness’ voice. “Plan b guys move. The men took off but not before Arness got a shot off. The blaster bolt grazed Wessiri’s side, but the other men helped him continue. Just as Keto walked came running out of the plant the ground rocked and a brilliant blinding light filled the sky.

Debris showered the area around them. Every noise echoed in his head, and his ears rung profusely. The noise dampeners on his helmet were damaged. It took him a minute to come to his senses. He was laying on his back, He saw Reeb running toward the building and Deuce stood over him, his helmet off. He yelled something to Arness but he couldn’t tell what at first. “Are you okay?”

Arness pulled his helmet off, “Yeah I think so. Do you have comms?”

Arness took a few more seconds to stand to his feet, and then he remembered seeing Keto running out of the plant after Cort and his men. His legs were still shaky, but he ran toward Reeb. Keto lay prostrate on the ground; he was missing his left arm and leg, and took a lot of shrapnel. “Reeb is he going to make it?” Arness screamed out, though he didn’t mean too.

“We’re gonna have to work fast to stop this bleeding. Get a tourniquet on his arm, I’ll take care of his leg. I still gotta get him an IV before he goes into shock.”

Arness got down and quickly got to work, “Where is the other team?”

Link looked around the area, “They’re all over the place.”

Arness couldn’t bear to look. They had been lured into this trap and he knew who to blame, “Damn you Cort, I hope you burn in hell.” Arness worked franticly to help save his squad leader. “Deuce keep a look out for Rebels. Link find a kriffing radio and get us a med evac.”

The two did as they were told. Reeb had Keto’s leg under control and started giving him fluids. He glanced over at Arness, “You feel okay?”

His adrenaline was still pumping so he could be critically wounded and not know, “I guess. Why?”

The medic looked at him one more time before finishing up his work. “You’re bleeding from you’re ear. You might want to get a scan when we get topside again,” he advised him.

Arness felt the right side of his neck just below his ear and felt the wetness of his own blood for the first time. A few moments later a gunship dropped down. Link ran over to guide it in. Another medic helped Reeb carry Keto over. The medic was a Lieutenant. Arness saluted him and he returned it. “Alright trooper I only have room for the wounded your medic and one gunner.”

Arness nodded, “Deuce, look after the boss for me. Link and I will fall back and regroup with the others. Take the Rebel radio whether it works or not.”

Deuce stopped in front of Arness, “Greyhelm you’re injured. Link and I were in the bunker. Why don’t you go?”

The Lieutenant wore an impatient look, “We don’t have time to argue, get on that ship. I’ll be okay and we’ll meet topside.” Deuce nodded and climbed aboard, Arness and Link made their way to the command center, he only hoped that they would get to a med lab before Keto was gone.

A very thrilling chapter, Cody. The short conversation between Arness and Garm saddened me, though I have a feeling much confliction will come of it. Also, it was nice to see him finally confront Cort, even if it didn't exactly work out the way he had hoped. happy

I love your Arness and Drea characters. Great relationship interaction. Very real stuff.

Frankly, I’m saddened that Nana died, because she seems to have moxie, but at least she can live on in flashbacks. This segment was awesome:

Arness smiled at her, “Thanks Nana, I will do my best.”

“I know you will my boy. Remember it is the little things that you do for us that makes our heart flutter, a flower for no reason, or a love letter by the bed when you go to work. You can spend all the money in the galaxy on us and those little things will stick with us more than any of it. We girls are a sucker for a romantic. Just remember the little things.” She told him as they swayed to the music. “And being good in the sack doesn’t hurt at all,” She teased.

Well…I’ll have to amend my statement to ‘I mostly like Arness’:
Arness’ anger was clearly visible. “You have some nerve, traitor. We are going to find you and Wessiri, and the two of you are going to spend a very long time in a spice mine somewhere. You make sure Cort knows I am coming for him. And you are wrong, this is very personal. I better not see you anywhere near my family.”

Intense battle scene to close out the chapter! Cort – so close!

Zego- A very thrilling chapter, Cody. The short conversation between Arness and Garm saddened me, though I have a feeling much confliction will come of it. Also, it was nice to see him finally confront Cort, even if it didn't exactly work out the way he had hoped.

The Garm and Arness plot will be one that occurs for a while, obviously Garm is still with the rebellion even into the Thrawn trilogy so not much to do there with him, but I really like giving the cannon guys so time in the story, it helps remind me that I am writing a Star Wars story. As for Cort he kind of accidentally became the main antagonist for the entire story so the whole thing will have him popping up from time to time.

BigEric- I love your Arness and Drea characters. Great relationship interaction. Very real stuff.

Yeah I think older people are so funny because they are to the point in their lives where they don't care what people think so I wanted to make her kind of spunky.

Well…I’ll have to amend my statement to ‘I mostly like Arness’:
Arness’ anger was clearly visible. “You have some nerve, traitor. We are going to find you and Wessiri, and the two of you are going to spend a very long time in a spice mine somewhere. It is hard to make the bad guy a good guy all the time. From Arness' point of view Garm is an evil person so he feels betrayed. As For Drea, she is so easy to write because she is the kind of woman every guys wants to meet, she is smart, caring, good looking... and the kind of woman who will always put her family first.

Where as Berylesse was the trashy, slutty kind of woman who we have all either had a fling with or thought about it. I really like writing both of these women because they are almost exact opposite of each other.

I promise I will get back to work on this very soon, I already gave an explination to most of everyone reading so I won't waste your time re-explaining myself. I hope everyone is willing to pick back up on the story ifm not everyone will I will write for everyone who does.
