Another great chapter! Yay! applause

First off, I’d like to say that if I were Anakin and could read my sons thoughts, I would slap him for being such an obnoxious young man. beatup Seesh! Luke thinks his dad self-centered. He needs to check himself.

Liked the part about Luke’s fantasy about Mara. *chuckles* Typical guy moment there. Gotta love Leia for being the one to bring him back to reality.

I like how you’ve reintroduced Valorum into this story. Him and Padme are wonderful in their political roles.

Nice to see Boba Fett here, and as a politician at that. Interesting character change here. He also presents a rather interesting argument before the Senate. Not an angle that I like, but it is an interesting plot twist nonetheless. It reeks of revenge.

Poor Anakin hates politics and is completely clueless here. doh! I loved his reactions to the idea of him possibly becoming a Senator himself, and then the shocked reaction at realizing that it was his children that would need to represent the Jedi.

Broga owning the bar was a slight surprise. I just didn’t see a migru owning a bar. I do love how he distracts Harm from the conversation. Also, I loved the comment about Falleen women. They are interesting creatures.

The conversation between Mace and Broga was interesting. I’m wondering who the bounty is that Harm is supposed to find, and exactly what information that holocron holds, and who sent Mace to get it. I have my suspicions, but will keep them to myself for now.

As for Harm spying on Mace… it’s never a smart idea to spy on a Jedi. Especially one as dark as Mace. shame_on_you

I can’t wait until the next post.

Just idling around, thinking about this and that, and randomly tapping my fingers on the desk waiting for another post to brighten my mailbox (ahem! tongue ), I scrolled back through this last post, re-living the bits that memory had highlighted for me. This time around, with the benefit of some distance and the addition of lots of interesting comments, I found myself circling back to your characterizations of Luke and his father.

You know, I agree with those who commented that their relationship in this story is a really original take on their alternate future. I also think it’s a dead-on likelihood that something like that would happen. Most “happy ending for Anakin and family” AU’s project forward the orphaned Luke’s OT longing for his father, and end in blissful happiness. In a universe in which Luke never was an orphan, and instead grew up in the shadow of a man who is all the things that we know Anakin to be – powerful, opinionated, impatient, stubborn, temperamental (even if he has tempered those traits over time and with effort, as at the end of FoTS he seemed to want to do) – it seems to me that conflict would be inevitable. Children of powerful, influential and very successful people often struggle with their own paths and identities.

I was also struck again by my sense of the Jedi Order as old, stretched, weary, and out of step with the rest of the Galaxy. It pains me to see it that way. I wonder how much of this has to do with tradition hampering progress, how much with the political scene in the Galaxy post-Palpatine, and how much with Anakin’s leadership of the Council? In that context, Valorum’s line, “With all due respect, Master Skywalker, you’re the last person in the Galaxy that I would suggest represent the Jedi Order” suddenly seems less funny and more … sad.

The Fett-as-Senator thing is a brilliant bit of plotting, and I take it very seriously despite the fact that ophelia’s image of Senator Fett had me howling with laughter…

After reading through the comments, I, too began to question Valorums’s motivations for his recommendations. Padmé’s nervousness makes me nervous. And I DON’T follow why he argues that the Skywalker offspring – both of them, no less – would make ideal representatives in the Senate for the Order.

“I am old, Master Souderwan,” geo3 tiredly. “I have no time for games. I need a new post in my box so my head stops hurting wondering about it!!!!

Oh, yeah – one more thing…

“And you know where the holocron is?”

Harm frowned when his receiver picked up Broga’s sigh.

“No. But know where on Tatooine, most likely it could be.”

“Very well. That will have to do.”

Wait!!! Mace settles for that? Mace????

*more headache*

Save me, Master Souderwan. You are my only hope….

I was just thinking over your last post today and something occurred to me regarding a certain piece of dialogue here.

Padmé placed a hand on Anakin’s and smiled. “They’re saying that there are those in the Senate who would use our refusal for funding as a platform to further their own political ambitions.” She looked back at Valorum who merely nodded. “It’s a tried and true ploy,” Padmé sighed. “Select a group that everyone knows little about—a group that no one understands—and vilify them. While the people are focused solely on this new enemy, they willingly surrender power in the hope of stopping this new threat.”

I became amazed at how appropriate this statement is in light of real life circumstances happening now, and in the past. Our own politicians are quite guilty of doing such things. Especially now. Yet the common populace often fall for it every time without even thinking about it, or realizing it at all for the distraction it is. You make this point very nicely.

Author’s note: I know this is growing to be a tired refrain, but my apologies for the long delay. Once again, the vagrancies of real life have intruded and slowed down my writing schedule. That said, I suspect that I should be able to update more frequently very soon.

geo3 has finished up the beta of the next post and I plan to update early tomorrow!! Thanks for sticking with me!!

Below is the revised PM list based on specific requests. Thank you all for taking the time to confirm your desire to receive them! If I’ve accidentally left your name on the list or if I dropped you off and you wished to remain on, it’s a simple thing for me to fix. Please just let me know. Thanks so much!

*Assumption based on previous post.

leia_naberrie: *hands her the first post award* Congratulations! happy

The twins have a new job... Good for Luke.

Well…to be fair, the kids don’t quite have the job yet. wink

It'd be a chance to get to know 'more' about Mara (pun intended)

*chuckle*

The concept of the clones as a nomadic state and Fett as Senater - brilliant and makes absolute sense.

Why thank you! grin

Talon_Kenobi: Sorry for the lack of posts but i am still reading and keep with the pms

No worries! I’m just happy you’re reading and enjoying.
_ThatJediScum_: Yay! New reader! dancing Thanks for stopping by!
I have to say I don't like this at all one bit! The bill nor the idea of the Jedi becoming a nation. I think it's a setup and a trap and I don't trust Valorum at all.
*whew* Had me scared you hated the whole story! Yeah…I don’t know how to feel about all this either…
What does he gain by helping(Is he really trying to help?) the Jedi? Who is he fighting against and Why does Fett want the Jedi disbanded?
All excellent questions. One can only hope the answers will become clear.

And can I just say for the record, the idea of disbanding the Jedi is completely assinine to me. So what exactly do these backers of Fett think the Jedi are going to do if the Senate or anyone for that matter pushes to have them, their families and their Order removed or disbanded?
Another excellent question! I think I’m going to like having you around! grin

And I'm more than slightly peeved at Mara cutting her eyes at Leia. Needless to say this power move against the Jedi have put me in a VERY bad mood.
Well hopefully the story wont always put you in a bad mood… [face_worrying]

CrazyAni:

Valorium's move makes me more than worried. What is he playing at?! Turning Jedi into a nation is a move worthy of Palpatine. But Palpie is dead, right?

Palpy is, indeed dead. Now why this particular political move has been made is a whole other question worth exploring…

Seeing Luke being so contemptuous towards his father is something I'd rather picture Leia doing. I really hope that he'll be able to look beyond himself, but that's the fun in this story.

In fairness to Luke, he has been living under the shadow of the most famous parents in the galaxy all his life. Combine that with normal teenage rebellion and a boy’s urge to show that he’s a man and you have a possibly explosive mix.

Luke and Leia in the Senate is a very fitting move. Leia will surely like it, and Luke too, though not because of politics. His visions of Mara did crack me up a bit! I wonder what would happen if Leia saw them.
*chuckle* Who said she didn’t? tongue

As for Mace, Harm and the others....only one word: very interesting!

Oh goody!! Hopefully I’ll keep your interest despite the excessively long delays between posts.

Darth_Vastor:
I am briefly dropping in to confirm that I absolutely still want to receive PMs updates for this phenomenal story. Unfortunately, my life is so busy right now that I don't have time to do my usual detailed response. Nevertheless, I have continued to read and this story remains as excellent as ever.

Many thanks, my friend! Just knowing that you’re reading and enjoying is a pleasure in and of itself! Your detailed responses are a superb bonus and I thoroughly enjoy them. That said, I completely understand the busy life (as my post rate probably indicates).
Thanks again for reading!
Jole: Yay! Another new reader! Thank you so much for joining me on this trip! grin

The way you continue to weave known characters into the story and make them slightly different, yet recognizable, is awesome. Fett in the Senate, never would've imagined. Very cool.

Thanks so much! I work hard to keep the characters as real as possible so it makes me really happy to learn that I’m at least marginally successful.

The way Luke feels about Anakin, though we had inklings of it from other posts, was revealing. Not sure if that's normal child rebellion toward a parent but I can see that happening if Anakin and Padme raised the kids. Anakin's legend would be a tough one to grow up under, never quite measuring up.

I am glad that you can recognize Luke’s reactions as somewhat predictable. It’s never easy to grow up in the shadow of legend. When you’re in “the family business”, it’s even harder.

Then there is Leia and Mara. I knew those two wouldn't get along.

*chuckle*

Please include me on the PM list. I want to see how this all pans out.

Excellent! Done! grin

ccp:

I wonder if Mara is going to get stuck helping Luke with his duties. I'm also thinking Mara and Leia are going to be butting heads often.

Maybe….

I'm wonder if Mace and Harm are going after a certain smuggler for a certain Hutt.

whistling

Healer_Leona:

Valorum is quite right in his suggetions of having the Jedi Order using the Sentate to defend themselves. Luke might just like polictics if it gets him closer to Valorum's aide.

Heehee. Yes, methinks Luke might look forward to an assignment like this one!

Luna_Nightshade:

I agree with the crowd here--the idea of the Jedi being asked to become a nation, and with Fett wanting the Jedi disbanded if they are not curtailed, frightens me a bit.

Well, change is always scary. That said, I think your concerns are completely justified. As with all politics, you never know who has your back and who has a knife ready to plunge into it.

I must say, I love your characterization of Anakin in this... it really amuses me to bring out that side of him. I get quite the kick out of it.

Thanks!!

And Harm and Windu are quite intriguing. Knew they were going after that Sith holocron on Tatooine... I wonder if it has any connection with Anakin's birth/creation/miraculous conception/random appearance. That implied connection between him and Sidious may still be lingering somewhere.

Hey! No trying to peek ahead! shame_on_you

But I worry for Harm now, though... Windu caught him in the act and doesn't look too pleased about it. Something tells me that Harm might not come out of this in one piece...

Yeah…Harm seems to have found himself in a very awkward place, hasn’t he?

I really enjoy your situations and characterizations--they're fresh and unique, and the idea of having legitimate teenage angst with a point in anything earns you bonus points.

hugs You really know how to make a writer’s day, don’t you?

Noelie:

And of course I was left wondering where and who represented the shadow's we need to watch out for.

*grin* It’s always great when I can keep my readers on their collective toes!

And if I were Harm I would just have listened to Mace's advice to not listen to his private conversations TWO days before he said it

laugh

rocketscientist:

So Luke has a few paternal issues, does he? It's interesting to think about, because of course in canon Luke never knew his father and was deparate for information about him. So here we see what the world of Luke Skywalker might have been like under the influence of Anakin. It seems that like most young men, he feels that things could be better. Reminds me of that Mark Twain quote: "when I was young, I thought my father was the most ignorant person in the world, but at twenty one, I was amazed at how much the old man had learned."

Quoted for truth! Indeed, the grass is always greener on the other side, is it not? And I LOVE Mark Twain so you can never go wrong quoting him! grin

It may come to pass that Luke and his dear old dad will need to break bad together - thus demonstrating to the youth what the fuss was all about. Of course, I could be wrong. Maybe Luke and Vos' son will join ranks and start that good old Sith tradition back up... that would be interesting too.

whistling

Poor kid! Don't worry Luke - they say it get's better in about 50 or 60 years.

Great! That’s a loooong wait for me. sad

I'm with whoever said Leia needs to find an interest of her own...

*chuckle* Well…you never know…

I want to know some more about their culture, was Fett an honorary name? Or like the freed African Americans, did they assume various names? Fett of course, being a prominent one.

Thanks for not immediately jumping to the conclusion that Fett=Boba Fett (not that I’m saying it isn’t, of course). Yes, I envision the clone culture much like the early freed slaves—nameless and without a place in the world. They have had to define themselves in an unfamiliar and cold galaxy.

Jedi senators, eh? This should get good... " I sense that the delegate from Xizor (or whatever) is telling a walloping lie." If I was a senator it would make ME very uncomfortable.

laugh

Harm ain't as smooth as he thinks he is! Heh heh heh!

Ain’t that the truth!

Broga is a pretty fascinating character. Why do I get the feeling he may be the smartest one in the fic? And Vos certainly has his finger in a number of pots as well, doesn't he?

*grin* I kinda like Broga too. As for Vos, it sure seems that way….

And of course Mace is - dare I say it? a BMF...

Heehee! Glad you like him!

RX_Sith:

Another awesome update. I'd elaborate more, but fear I'd suffer the usual no comment tact, so instead I'll just sit back and await your future postings.

*chuckle* Why ruin my fun? tongue

VA_Parky:

Wow! I loved that meeting with Valorum - that was so intriguing. The way you revealed his intentions one bit at a time was genius! Storytelling at its best, my friend!

blush Thank you very much!

And Mace is still as sharp as ever! I laughed out loud when Harm came around the corner and spotted him! Hee! He should have known he couldn't slip something like that past our darling Mace!

LOL! Yeah, Harm’s still feeling his way around this particular burgeoning relationship. wink

Awesome work! This story is shaping up so nicely! There are so many characters and every single one seems to have a part to play. Love it!

Thanks so much!

TelannaTani:
So Luke has definitely moved on to better pastures. Unfortunately, to accurately write Mara Jade, you have to include a lot of confrontation. Someone said that they’ll likely butt heads a bit – I agree wholeheartedly. That’s what’s great about the love they have in Canon - as someone in a movie said once, “…theirs is little more beautiful than the sight of two strong wills bending in love to each other.” Somehow, though, I think it’ll take a while.

True, Mara has a fiery personality in canon, but I think we should all remember that Mara, in this universe, wasn’t taken away from her parents as a child and raised by Palpatine to be one of his Hands. Given that, it’s not out of the question that she might be a little different than you’re used to.

The idea of the Clones being appointed as a nomadic nation – with Fett as representative – was a good one. So far, I’m not convinced it’s a negative option for the Jedi either. It is certainly a better option that complete isolation, ostracism or destruction (literally or politically). Canon Valorum was a steadfast supporter of the Jedi – perhaps I’m wrong, but I feel that he’s true to that in this story as well.

Good point about Valorum’s intentions in canon. He had an abiding respect for the Order. It would take a significant change of events to turn him away from a lifetime of of support. Then again, politicians are politicians…

Leia was a quick choice for the Senate position, but I have to admit that I was surprised by the suggestion of Luke as well. … However, in this storyline, the other Jedi are still around, still active and involved. Already I’m concerned by the level of power Anakin holds in the Order. To instill BOTH of his children as representatives to the Senate infers a monopolization of power that, IMO, the Council would (or perhaps should) not allow.

Excellent observations, Voz! With the influence that Anakin seems to hold in the Order, it might not be wise to give the impression that he is extending that hold into the very heart of galactic politics.

Perhaps they are both qualified – I’m not sure we know enough about them as of yet to determine this, but by appointing them both, an equal thread looms. Opposition to the Jedi could easily turn into opposition of the Skywalker family itself if too much power is harbored in this one group. It is a huge risk, IMO. One I hope Padmé is smart enough to see and avoid.

Brilliant point! Alas, I’m afraid that the privileged rarely recognize their position until it is pointed out to them—sometimes in disastrous ways.

But then, perhaps you disagree with me. You are the author.

Oh, my dear! Let me assure that there are no wrong answers in interpretation of the words I write. My thoughts are no more valid than yours. I am merely the scribe, setting forth the story on the figurative page. How you, the reader, receives the story is entirely up to you. happy

It’s good to see that Mace is working for Quinlan, which, IMO makes sense. Quinlan seeks the missing Sith Holocron, and Mace is a logical – though potentially dangerous – choice. And there’s still the question of where/what/when concerning Mace’s return from Hoth. The Order scenes do not infer that he is an active member of the order, nor does Mace’s own actions.

Very interesting.

Interesting indeed….

I can only hope that the story eventually satisfies these troubling questions (though I’m sure more questions will be raised in due time).

And I have to confess. I don’t remember WHERE I heard Broga before. I’m assuming it’s a character from earlier in this series, but my mind is drawing a huge blank, even now that you mentioned. You couldn’t throw a dog a bone, could you friend?

*chuckle* Sure thing.
Spoiler Alert: Highlight to see.
Broga appeared twice in Descent into the Dark. The first time you met him was in the beginning of the story just prior to Yoda beginning his lightsaber demonstration for the migru. We learned then that Broga wanted to become a Jedi. Much later on in the story, right after Yoda kills Qui-Lek (then Head of the Jedi Order), Broga appears again. Broga’s light pierces through Yoda’s darkness. Right before Yoda leaves, Darth Frigeus warns Broga that their entire civilization was to be destroyed and the boy runs away.

Hope that helps. grin

stormqueen874:
Wow, Souder (I can't believe I've been calling you Sounder!) that update was excellent!
Thanks!! And don’t worry about it! My name gets so many variations on it, I hardly ever notice anymore. wink
I love the amount of suspense you've got going here, and I absolutely love your rendition of Luke. He's as far from his Episode IV counterpart as I can imagine, and I think it works incredibly well for him.

Thank you. Luke is perhaps the character that is furthest from his canon counterpart—in large part due to his very different environment growing up. Leia was a princess in canon and that’s not terribly different that being the daughter of Anakin and Padmé Skywalker. Luke, on the other hand, grew up in canon as the son of a moisture farmer so this life is as far from that as possible.

This comment just made me do a double take; I know that Luke can't stand his father in this, and for some reason I can't get over that. It's such a neat twist to his character; I don't think anyone has really done that before (as far as I know, and I certainly haven't read all the fics out there, so who knows?) and I love how well Luke's bitterness comes across. It makes me wonder why Luke feels that way, actually. What happened to estrange him from his father like this? Is he really just too different from Anakin? Hm...

I love great questions!! grin I really do!
That's a great line, SW! Anakin would be the last person they'd want in the Senate; I can just see him losing it and Force-choking everyone. *shakes head*

laugh

Broga is a great character; I loved nearly all of his lines and the banter he had with Harm was just great! Mace's conversation with Broga also raised some very interesting questions... So Quinlin has sent Mace out on something, huh? Hm... I wonder why he's done that... what's so special about this holocron? Hm...

Did I mention that I love great questions? thinking

Your Mace, by the way, is just such a cool character. He's got this darkness to him (I wonder why?) that is so nifty, and I can't wait to see what happens with him and Harm. Who are they going after? You've really got me wondering...

Thanks so much! I’m glad you’re enjoying!

Arcalian:

Gee, I wonder WHO could POSSIBLY be behind the Fett Clone Rights movment. Gee. *Shakes head*

Who? Come on! Who?

And no, Luke and Leia, the children of Anakin, are not the ones you want on the Senate either. They're, if you like, the next-to-last people you want there. Valorum must surely know that. Anyone affiliated directly with Anakin at all, outside of being a Jedi=no.

You may well turn out to be right…

And the Jedi becoming a nation on the council in that sense....oh no. No no no. That, too, will factionalize them.

I’m getting the feeling that you just don’t like this idea at all, am I right? You weren’t exactly clear. tongue

Harm, you tried to spy on an Ex Jedi....you are still a complete idiot.

LOL!

My theory on who the Sith Lord is has strenghtened.

Now you have to share! You can PM me if you like. wink (Not that I’d tell you if you were right or anything….)

Ophelia:
Better late than never . . . or I hope so, anyway.

Absolutely, love! hugs

I can understand that, even without the Mara factor. Ex-Chancellor Valium--er, Valorum, would have a hard time holding my attention, too.

*chuckle* Yeah…not exactly the most dynamic speaker ever, eh?

Is *that* what Jedi use their visualization powers for? Now I know how Obi-Wan managed to stand following Qui-Gon around and doing nothing but saying "Yes, Master" every ten minutes. He was imagining everybody in the room naked.

You say that like it’s a bad thing! tongue

Heh . . . they can't stand each other already. This should be interesting. I wonder what Luke's reaction will be if Han shows up in this story? Maybe he'll whistle the equivalent of the "Pirates of the Carribean" theme at Leia every time she walks by. She'd throw a really *big* rock at him then.

Funny you should say that….

Ah, very interesting . . . ::strokes long gray beard . . . that I don't actually have::

You don’t have a long gray beard??? shock angry I feel so betrayed!

It sounds like something Palpatine *did* do! Or were you comatose during the Mace vs. Palpatine bit??

Umm….yeah…I think Anakin wasn’t exactly all there during that whole period…

*This* is "the Chosen One?" Oy . . . I'm buying the Force a self-help book: "Smart Forces, Foolish Choices."

ROTFL!!! I like it! Sounds like a great plot bunny for you to pursue!

This struck me as wildly funny . . . I'm not sure why. Maybe because it makes me think of "Boba Fett: Bounty Senator." Early every morning he checks his fax machine by shooting up a cable 1,027 floors into the duracrete by his office, pulling himself up under cover of darkness, vaporizing a hole in his window with a laser beam, and blasting all the security devices in the room. Then he dives and rolls to his fax machine and starts reading his faxes, and his secretary calls the window repair people.

*falls out of his chair, laughing*

I love it!!

*wipes eyes*

Hey, the kid has a clue! Congratulations, Padmé, his body actually *does* contain your DNA!

I. Can’t. Breathe!

Obi-Wan, on the other hand, is a total idiot. See, Luke? That's what a lifetime of imagining people naked will do to you.

Stop!!! LOL!!

Umm . . . you haven't looked inside Luke's head lately, have you, ex-Chancellor Valorum? I don't know about in AU's, but in regular U's, political things are best left to the Skywalker women. The men are better at blowing things up.

*chuckle* Good point!

We could ask Anakin--he's in a position to make the comparison. Then again, Padmé might set off that explosive control device if he answered.

*grin* I’m sure he’s at least smart enough not to fall into that particular trap….

Heh . . . Mace > everything else in the universe > Harm.

Heeheee!

P.S.--Can we have a sequel about your OC, and have it called "Harm's Way?"

::Ducks rocks, tomatoes, gaffi sticks, Boba Fett's fax machine, a wooden lightsaber . . .::

plain ::Throws rocks, tomatoes, gaffi sticks:: ::puts Boba Fett’s fax machine back::

Hmm….that’s a pretty neat idea. If Harm makes it to the end, I’ll think about it. wink

cdmcc: Yay! Yet another new reader! Thanks for stopping by!

Fave bits so far - Obi attemting to dislodge Anakins family jewels; Obi the budget guy; Mace going mediaeval.

And of course the rest of it

Wow! Thanks a bunch! Hope you’ll continue to enjoy! grin

TorontoJediMaster:

Was I alone in imagining the number of spit-takes Obi-Wan would be doing during that conversation with Valorum? First off, the idea of Anakin as a Senator? <imagines Obi-Wan spitting out his drink at the mention of that idea> Then, Luke and Leia going to the Senate? <Obi-Wan spits his drink out again> That's only a slightly worse idea.

*grin* I should have given Obi-Wan a glass of milk! That way, at least once during the scene, he would have had it coming out of his nose!

Luke, on the other hand....I somehow don't see him enjoying himself. After a few hours of listening to debate, he'd be in his Senate pod, using his lightsaber to draw out Tic-Tac-Toe on the floor.

Yeah…I’m pretty sure he’d get bored real quick.

[i[He has to watch what he does out of worry over bad publicity for the Order. So, the chance to do something that his father just HATES the idea of, but would still be good for the Order (so Anakin has no legitimate reason to stop him), is just too good to pass up. [/i]

Excellent point! I think Luke would relish the idea of spinning Anakin up every chance he gets.

This would be a chance for Luke to get out on his own and see THE central planet in the galaxy. Due to memories of Palpatine's past manipulations, I suspect Anakin didn't want Luke going to Coruscant. That would make it all the more tempting for him.

Another great observation! Indeed, Luke and Leia haven’t spent any time on Coruscant and the appeal of visiting there would surely be strong.

Third, (and likely the clincher) as Mara works for Valorum, there's a very good chance she'll be on Coruscant too. With that vote factoring, Luke would be probably be halfway back to his room to pack his bags.

LOL! Well said!

Sooner or later, he'll realize that a) his destiny really is to be a Jedi; and b) Anakin probably is smarter, cooler and more "with it" than someone Luke's age could EVER credit their father with being. (I'll bet Luke is at a stage where he wonders how Anakin got to be so repressed...Thinks that Anakin has always followed all the rules all his life...And can't quite figure how what his mother finds in Anakin that's attractive. LOL)

*grin* Pretty much every teenaged boy thinks that way at some time, doesn’t he?

I can see it now. Anakin is saying he doesn't know where Luke gets it from. When HE was Luke's age, HE was easy to work with and non-rebellious...At which point Obi-Wan is torn between crying out in protest, and breaking down in gales of laughter. He ends up choking on the hors d'oeurve he was eating and Anakin must then use the Force to heimlich him.

ROTFL!!! I might just have to write that scene!!

Just out of curiosity, did the Jedi leave any presence back on Coruscant when they moved to Yavin? I know Anakin wanted the Order away from any potential corruption there, but it's STILL the seat of the Galactic Government and thus there's always a potential for danger there.

Hmm…how to answer this question… I think it’s ok. Yes, the Jedi keep their eyes on Coruscant. We’ll leave it at that for now.

I always saw Mace as a guy who really preferred to work without a partner. Having a partner is an annoyance. Having a partner like Harm is a BIG annoyance. Mace should be careful. Anger can lead to the Dark Side....It can also lead to hypertension, and Mace IS coming up on seventy. (Heh-heh. Mace might feel that keeping Harm around is a good way for him to practice anger management, but he also needs to keep the ole' blood pressure under control).

Heeheee. Yeah…Harm better work overtime to get on Mace’s good side before Mace starts seeing him as more of an annoyance than he already is.
RavenNolan: Great to see you! hugs

First off, I’d like to say that if I were Anakin and could read my sons thoughts, I would slap him for being such an obnoxious young man. Seesh! Luke thinks his dad self-centered. He needs to check himself.

I don’t think there’s a kid alive who doesn’t think they’re smarter than their parents at some point in their lives. wink

Liked the part about Luke’s fantasy about Mara. *chuckles* Typical guy moment there. Gotta love Leia for being the one to bring him back to reality.

I’m not sure if I loved Leia brining him back to reality. *pouts* I was enjoying that moment. tongue

Nice to see Boba Fett here, and as a politician at that. Interesting character change here.

Hey! Who said it was Boba? wink

He also presents a rather interesting argument before the Senate. Not an angle that I like, but it is an interesting plot twist nonetheless. It reeks of revenge.

Now why would any clone want revenge on the Jedi? thinking

Broga owning the bar was a slight surprise. I just didn’t see a migru owning a bar.

You’ll find, I think, that there’s a lot about Broga that might surprise you.

The conversation between Mace and Broga was interesting. I’m wondering who the bounty is that Harm is supposed to find, and exactly what information that holocron holds, and who sent Mace to get it. I have my suspicions, but will keep them to myself for now.

But the speculation is my favorite part of the responses!! happy

Indeed, politicians of all shapes and sizes demonize their opponents in an attempt to distract the masses from the machinations of the power-hungry. Politics, it would seem, is independent of galactic divides of space and time.

geo3:

Just idling around, thinking about this and that, and randomly tapping my fingers on the desk waiting for another post to brighten my mailbox (ahem!),

Thanks for the subtle message! tongue

Thank you so much! You’ve summarized my perceptions of how their relationship would have developed perfectly!

You, my dear, are as perceptive as always. The Order has undergone significant changes over the ensuing years and not all of them are necessarily for the better. Change is always difficult, of course, but when you attempt to revamp an organization that has remained largely the same for hundreds (thousands?) of years, it is a great deal to ask of its members, not to mention the ‘outsiders’ who look on with understandable concern….

The Fett-as-Senator thing is a brilliant bit of plotting, and I take it very seriously despite the fact that ophelia’s image of Senator Fett had me howling with laughter…

*grin* Don’t you just love her responses?!

After reading through the comments, I, too began to question Valorums’s motivations for his recommendations. Padmé’s nervousness makes me nervous. And I DON’T follow why he argues that the Skywalker offspring – both of them, no less – would make ideal representatives in the Senate for the Order.

Needless to say, I won’t comment on whether or not your concerns are justified but I will say this—his little suggestion could well turn out to be a very important development.

“I am old, Master Souderwan,” geo3 tiredly. “I have no time for games. I need a new post in my box so my head stops hurting wondering about it!!!!

Done!

Wait!!! Mace settles for that? Mace????

*more headache*

Heehee!

EGKenobi:

Awesome story. I'm sorry I've not been on for a looonnnngggg time.

No worries! Glad to still have you aboard! happy

The story is excellent. I love the way you've brough back Valorum, and Mara Jade as well. Should make things interesting.

Author’s note: Though you’ll probably grasp it based on context, a couple huttese translations for you.

1. Porko poodoo bantha – Big pile of bantha poo (equivalent to “what a pile of @!&@!”)

2. Chu ta je – Screw me! (But the more vulgar version)

Also, for those who are interested, there is a PM extension of the first scene in this chapter. If you’re interested, please PM me and I’ll send it to you.

Chapter 4,
Until Death…, Part I

The reverberations in the stone floor coursing through his black boots and up his spine did nothing to halt Anakin’s pacing. From the corner of his awareness he sensed Padmé behind him, patiently waiting for him to settle down to the point that he could speak. He spun on his heels yet again, this time glaring at her with as much frustration as he could muster.

Padmé inclined her head ever so slightly and arched her right eyebrow. “Finished?”

“No!” Anakin growled and began to pace across their bed chamber again.

Smiling slightly in response, Padmé daintily clasped her hands in front of her and watched her husband reach the edge of the transparisteel door that led to the veranda, twist on his heel, and march back toward the bed.

“He’s up to something!” Anakin snapped.

“Why do you say that?” Padmé asked nonchalantly.

Anakin spun around and plopped down onto the bed. “Call it an educated guess.”

Padmé glided over and slid onto the bed next to him. She reached up and brushed a stray lock of his hair behind his ear and smiled. Leaning forward, she gently touched his gray-streaked temples with her lips, her warm breath sending shivers along his spine and raising the hairs on his arms.

“You’re tense,” she whispered as she ran her long fingers along the nape of his neck. Instantly Anakin’s eyes slid shut, as if on their own volition, and his head dropped forward, allowing Padmé greater access to perform her expert ministrations. She slipped behind him deftly, cradling his back between her legs as she grasped both his shoulders in her delicate but powerful hands and began kneading his taut muscles.

“You’re changing the subject,” Anakin murmured. As Padmé began to pull her hands away, Anakin reached up and grabbed them, holding them in place. “I wasn’t exactly complaining, you know.”

He could feel her triumphant smile but decided to let her have her victory as long as she kept doing what she was doing. He knew she was simply softening him up so they could have one of those ‘rational’ discussions she was so fond of.

“Did you sense any deception from Valorum, love?”

“Hmmm?” A moan escaped Anakin’s lips as Padmé pressed her thumb deep into his shoulder. “No…not exactly.”

“Not exactly?”

Lifting his head, Anakin let it fall backward on her shoulder. Padmé nuzzled his cheek with her own and kissed him gently on the ear.

“I didn’t sense anything from him, actually,” Anakin went on, his voice barely above a whisper. “That’s what’s troubling. I should have sensed something. Somehow he was shielding himself.”

Padmé was silent for several moments, though she continued to massage his neck. “That is odd,” she said at last. “How do you suppose he would know how to do that?”

Sliding his hands along her calves, Anakin shrugged. “Well, he’s been around Jedi pretty much all his life. It’s not out of the question that he might have learned a few tricks.”

“Enough to be able to stop you from knowing what he’s thinking? I don’t think that’s likely, is it?” Padmé slipped her arms around his waist as he leaned more heavily into her. “Besides, why would he shield himself in the first place?”

“Good point and even better question.”

“Do you think the Council should heed his advice anyway?”

“I was hoping you’d tell me.” Anakin leaned forward and rested his elbows against his knees. Padmé took the opportunity to begin rubbing his lower back. “What he said made sense, Padmé. Perfect sense. In fact, it’s almost as if that’s the only answer to the situation.”

“And that’s why it makes you nervous.”

“Exactly! Why now? Why after all these years, Padmé?” Anakin stood and walked over the doorway to the veranda. “The Senate has mumbled about the Jedi for over a decade, but they’ve always pretty much left us alone. Most of the Senators there are secretly indebted to us for helping them out of one jam or another. It doesn’t make sense!” He turned around and leaned against the wall. “And why Luke and Leia? They have no political experience at all!”

“Well, their status as the children of the couple that saved the galaxy would give them instant credibility.” Padmé replied. “The fact that the are well trained would give them the advantage of being able to sense duplicity.”

Anakin chuckled. “I’m afraid in the Senate, their alarm klaxons will be on full alert all the time!”

“So you’ll go through with it?”

Anakin straightened. “I won’t vote on the matter. Luke and Leia are my children. This is a matter for the Council to decide and I won’t use my influence to affect the outcome.”

Padmé nodded. “Of course not.” She looked at him and Anakin found himself relaxing into the murky darkness of her eyes. “When will the Council meet?”

“Tomorrow. Valorum and his aide leave tonight so we’ll wait until after they’re gone.” A familiar stirring drew Anakin away from the doorway and back to the bed. “I hate politics.”

He waved his hand and the opacity nodes activated, blocking out the outside world and darkening the room.

Padmé smiled. “So you keep saying.”

Moving between her knees, he leaned down and pressed his lips against hers. “There are other things I’d rather discuss,” he breathed.

“I don’t think discussion is what you had in mind at all, Master Jedi.”

Tracing his lips along her cheek, he pulled her earlobe into his mouth as he leaned her backward into the bed and pressed his weight onto her. She moaned as he called on the Force in tiny vibrations and sent them pulsating along her legs.

“I love it when you call me Master.”

“Just shut up and get these off me.”

*~*

As the terminal readout scrolled across his darkened cockpit, Harm whistled in surprise. Leaning back into his chair, he scratched the stubble on his chin, lost in thought. The silent whir of servomotors and gentle clicks from atmospheric control relays were all he heard above his own breathing.

He felt a prickle on the back of his neck.

“Porko poodoo bantha!” Harm spun in his chair and leaped to his feet.

A dark shadow leaning against the narrow cabin entrance shifted.

Nearly two decades of reflexes coalesced in an instant to bring Harm’s blaster to bear. Before his thumb could flick the safety off, the weapon shot out of his hands and disappeared into the darkness.

“Watch where you point that thing,” Windu’s sudden, scratchy voice growled out of the murkiness. Stepping out into the light, he extended the handle of the blaster to Harm and sat down in the pilot’s chair.

Harm snatched back his blaster, holstering it as he let out a breath. “You shouldn’t sneak up on a man like me, Windu. You’re liable to get shot.”

Windu glanced back at Harm, the corner of his mouth upturned in what might pass for a half-smile. “I’ll keep that in mind.” He leaned over and studied the console that Harm had been reading. “I take it this is your new bounty?”

“Yeah…” Harm frowned. “Stinks. Chu ta je!”

“No need for that kind of language.” Windu scrolled through the message. “Everything on this planet smells, what makes this assignment any different?”

Harm stared at Windu in shock. “Did you see who we’re after and who we have to go through to get them?”

Windu knit his brow in clear confusion and looked again at the screen. “A human and a Wookiee and they’re being held by a hutt.” Shrugging, Windu looked back over at Harm. “I don’t see a problem.”

“You…you don’t see a problem??” Harm shook his head. “That’s not just any human, Windu! That’s Han kraffin’ Solo! He’s the best smuggler in this sector! Ask him, he’ll tell you!”

Windu replied with a blank stare.

“Fine! You might not be afraid of a measly human but that Wookiee friend of his is as strong as Corellian burgha and faster than a kryat dragon. What’s worse, they’re in the custody of Jabba the Hutt!! This assignment is way outta my league.”

“I suppose it’s a good thing I’m here.”

That’s what stinks about this assignment, Windu!”

“I don’t follow.”

Harm rolled his eyes. “I thought you Jedi were supposed to be really smart!” When he caught a glimpse of Windu’s stern frown, he swallowed. “No offense.” Twisting the copilot’s chair around o that he was fully facing Windu, Harm leaned forward and lowered his voice conspiratorially. “There is no way anyone would give me this assignment. A job like this involves breaking into Jabba’s palace and only a fully trained unit would even consider it. What’s more, even if we could get a hold of Solo and his Wookiee, there’s no easy way to keep hold of him. The guy has a habit of getting out of every jam he finds himself in.”

“Seems to me like his luck’s run out.”

“Fair enough. Jabba’s got an army of bounty hunters working for him. What do we have?”

Windu raised his right eyebrow.

“Right. I’ve got you. But that’s my problem with this whole thing. I shouldn’t have you. Jor and Shinn are capable guys, but they’d be useless in taking in this bounty.”

“What’s your point?”

“My point is that it seems awfully convenient that I’d get this assignment right after I stumble on to the only guy on the planet who could help me pull it off.”

“Your point is that it’s a trap?”

“Well…yeah…”

Windu sighed and leaned back into his chair. “Of course it’s a trap.”

Harm’s mouth fell open. After a long moment, he shut it again and drew his eyebrows together. “Now I’m the one who doesn’t follow.”

“Broga knew too much about why I was here and offered to help me entirely too readily.” Windu brought his fingers together and rested them against his chin. “He came into our discussion entirely too prepared. He had his ‘payment’ already worked out.”

“So this bounty for Solo is fake?”

“No. I’m sure it’s real. A creature like Broga doesn’t get where he has by shutting off options. He wants to get rid of me and he wants Solo, but he wants Solo less. He hopes that I’ll be eliminated in the effort to extricate Solo from Jabba. If, by some chance, I make it out with the bounty, then Broga still wins and has to work out how he’ll take me out later on.”

“But this bounty isn’t from Broga. It’s from some moisture magnate.”

“Broga’s behind it, I assure you. What’s more, you can bet that Jabba’s been warned that we’re on our way.”

“Why would Broga warn Jabba?”

It was Windu’s turn to look surprised. He shook his head. “I thought you bounty hunters were supposed to be smart.”

Harm narrowed his eyes and pretended to smile. “Funny.”

“The objective of this assignment is to get rid of me.”

“Well, that doesn’t sound like too cozy a job to me. I’m not interested in being caught in the crossfire.” Harm leaned over to access the terminal.

“What do you think you’re doing?” Windu’s tone was firm and froze Harm in place.

“Umm…I’m just declining the bounty. I do it all the time. No big deal.”

“Why would you do that?”

Harm frowned. “Because…it’s…a trap? What the chuta do you expect me to do?”

The corners of Windu’s mouth turned upward and this time there was no doubt that he was smiling. A growing hollow sensation formed in Harm’s gut.

“We spring the trap,” Windu answered, a hint of his teeth slipping through in his smile.

“Right!” Harm sighed, allowing his hands to drop into his lap. “Spring the trap! Of course we should spring the trap! Why didn’t I think of that?”

I love how you've gently aged them, and I'm gratified that they've held up so well. Their easy intamacy is touching and well handled. And I recommend the PM version - to anyone who might be looking at this... batting

Now of course, I too think there is more than meets the eye about Valorum's request for Jedi senators. thinking

Mace is so bad, he KNOWS the universe revolves around him. I just love an unabashed egomaniac. In fiction, that is. raised_brow

So why does Broga want to get rid of him? I can think of a number of reasons ... <QuilanVos>but which is it? Uhm...

Ha! laugh Harm is awesome! He and Mace are really getting into this partnership thing. I hope it continues - I am enjoying them together. So funny!

And Anakin and Padme are wonderful together as always. love You write them so well - their relationship comes off beautifully under your watchful eye. I, too, am worried about Valorum's request. Not only for the reasons Anakin stated but because I know you have a few tricks up your sleeve and I'm trying to be prepared for them! raised_brow

Another wonderful update! I know how it is when DRL gets in the way - I'm having the same problem. Grrr! Sometimes, there just isn't enough time in the day to get it all done. And with the holidays coming up... doh! Oh dear!

Thanks for the PM! You know I can't miss a single minute of this story. I've gotta see what happens!!

So, Mace and Harm have to go after Han and Chewie, get them away from Jabba, walk into a trap, dress like Stormtroopers (oops, did I go a little too far)! tongue

And Broga knows or is in league with Jabba?! I have a feeling that Broga is more and more the Darkness with each newer post, with Valorum as his apprentice. skull

This chapter was very much like Souderwan was dancing in front of my shouting "Your theory about the identity of the Sith Lord was correct!"

So obvious was it, in fact, that now I've begun to doubt said theory. Souderwan, you are a skilled writer of the first order, and since it's so obvious to me, it must be a red herring.

Then again, I figured out--or at least suspected--the Sidious twist in Fall of the Sith when Mace was making his speech to the Senate. So maybe I am right. *rubs temples*

Meanwhile, Harm. Harm harm harm. *shakes head* Don't you get it yet? Mace will burn through Jabba's trap like it wasn't even there. A half-trained Luke managed it in continuity, so a fully trained ex Jedi with detailed experience of both Light and Dark sides--and the Master of Vaapad to boot, will dance through it. Unless, of course, Harm does something stupid and betrays him. And Harm seems to make a career out doing stupid things like that....I marvel that he's still alive at all.

As for Padme-Anakin...oh my...my my my. They've had time to work on their techniques haen't they? It shows.

Hm… how to earn this week’s cookie. I’ll have to think hard.

Anakin/Padmé:

My first thought from the first sentence: the reverberating black boots really said Vader to me. Spooky.

Valorum was shielded, but my bets are on Mara, not Valium (gosh, that’s catchy Ophelia. Reminds me of Space Balls…) So Mara HAS learned the ways of the Force, but not from the Order. Very interesting. AND she happens to be part of the group coming to “save the day” with the Jedi. Anakin’s suspicions aren’t half bad for someone who’s exhibited the brightness of a rock. It IS a bit ironic that this is all coming to a head at this one time, huh. But then, if it was independent, we wouldn’t have a story. tongue
