Summary: The events on Bespin have been altered to change the future, and two dead Jedi masters must help the only person who can change them. The person who’s life hangs in the balance.

Prologue
The sweat clung to his body as they slowly proceeded into the chamber. Steam rose all around them, giving the appearance that this was all a dream. Yet out of the smoke came the black beast which had been hunting them for the past month. Next to him stood the bounty hunter who had tracked them to this remote planet. The group walked down a small flight of stairs and before them stood the traitor.
“What’s going on . . . buddy,” Han could not hide the venom in his voice as he nudged Lando.
The Baron just glanced over his shoulder. “You’re being put into carbon freeze.”
It seemed as if time had stopped, the moment the words left his mouth Han immediately looked at the Princess. Memorizing every inch of her face and trying to communicate with his eyes how much these past weeks had meant to him. They both opened their mouths to speak but no words came. How do you say good bye when you’ve just learned how to love?
“Put him in,” the mechanical voice echoed.
Suddenly his dear friend and companion began to growl and throw stormtroopers about. It took a great amount of yelling before he would finally listen to reason, and as they locked the binders around his wrists, the Captain gave the Wookie his finally command. Only a handful in the room knew of the life debt, and even fewer would understand that the smuggler was asking the Wookie to transfer the debt to the Princess.
Once again the lovers locked eyes, on impulse they were drawn together. For so long they had been like magnets repelling off one another whenever they got too close. It took time, but now they had reversed the effects and immediately came together, needing to taste and feel the other one last time. If this were to be the Captain’s end, then he would not show any sign of weakness. He had lived his life the exact way he wanted, and to be able to kiss this beautiful woman and stare the Dark Lord in the eye right before the end was a glorious death for a Corellian. He tried to stand tall as they moved him over the lift.
“I love you,” Leia desperately called out.
His features softened for just a moment and a twinkle appeared in his eye. “I know.”
He had made no secret about his feelings towards her, but professing them might cause her irreparable damage, something he could not live with even in the after life. She would need to move on from him. Find the prince she deserved, a man who could give her a kingdom to once again rule, that was her destiny. To become one of the greatest leaders the galaxy had ever seen, and he knew she would achieve it.
Not taking his eyes off of her, Han felt himself being lowered into the chamber. He waited until the cold air tore through his body to look away. Every limb was on fire as he began to choke on the carbon filling his lungs. No torture could compare to the agony in which he was in now. He could feel himself slowly losing the battle to stay awake, and just as he felt himself about to let go, a blinding white light surrounded him. His lungs re-opened and warmth spread through out his body. Cautiously he curled his fingers to get movement in them again. As the light receded away, he rubbed his eyes to see what was happening. Nothing could prepare him for what he saw next.
“No!” Leia gave out a blood-curdling scream before throwing herself on the block of carbon that held his body captive.
“Leia,” he choked as he moved to hold her. Something happened that scared him beyond belief, his hands past right through her. “Leia!” he shouted trying to get her attention.
“She can’t hear you,” a calm voice told him. “At least not yet.”
Han looked up to see a man about his age walking towards him. “Who are you?”
“Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side,” the man said with a smirk.
His caviler attitude was beginning to wear on Han’s last nerve. He opened his mouth to speak but stopped when he finally recognized the quote. “Are you Ben?”
“Actually my name is Obi-Wan Kenobi – Luke knew me as Ben,” he explained.
Before Han could ask another question, he saw the Princess and Chewie being dragged away from the gruesome scene. He followed them still trying to figure out what was happening.
“You’re dead Han,” Obi Wan’s voice startled him. “You died during the freezing process.”
The smuggler slowly turned his head, disbelief in his eyes as well as a small hint of sorrow. “I – I can’t be. If I’m dead then why am I – ”
“The Force kept you in this state for a reason, one we must uncover,” a man materialized in front of Han. He had long hair but was also dressed in a similar fashion as Obi-Wan. “My name is Qui-Gon Jinn. Obi-Wan and I are here to help you.”
“Help me,” he started to shout. “I’m dead! If you were going to help, it might have been useful to do it while I still had a body!”
Before either Jedi could say another word Han spun on his heels and ran after his friends. When he reached the door to the chamber he tried to push the button, of course his hand went right through the panel. He was about to try again when he felt himself begin to disappear, even though he couldn’t see his body anymore, he still was conscious of the fact he was moving. Within seconds he re-materialized in the cell, which Vader had held them in earlier. Sitting on the floor curled up in a ball was the Princess. Her soft sobs were the only noise filling the room. Han knelt down in front of her letting his hand hover just above her head.
“It’s ok,” he whispered. “I’m here.”
Her head tilted upwards slowly and it seemed like they were making eye contact. “Han?” she breathed.
“Yes,” Han sighed in relief. “I’m here!”
But her eyes wandered and tears once again trickled down her cheek.
“No, I’m here!” Han shouted once more. “Leia I’m right here!”
“Remarkable,” Qui-Gon said as he and Obi-Wan appeared. “She has no official training yet she can tap into her powers.”
Han stood up and looked over at them. “What are you talking about?”
“We have to tell him,” Obi-Wan seemed nervous. “He has to understand if this is to work.”
“Yes, you’re right,” Qui-Gon sighed before turning his attention to Han. “Your friends have been living a lie. One only few people knew about.”
“Lie? What lie? About what?” Han quickly asked.
“A young Jedi named Anakin Skywalker secretly married a Senator from Naboo named Padme Amidala. She gave birth to twins right before she passed away,” Qui-Gon paused letting the news sink in.
“Do you mean,” Han turned back to Leia still rocking slightly on the floor. “The kid and the Princess? They’re related?”
“Yes,” Qui-Gon confirmed, but something in the way he answered the questions made Han suspicious there was more they were keeping from him. “The Princess has the ability to do everything you’ve seen Luke do. That is why she might have seen you just a moment ago. That is why I believe the Force has kept you in this state.”
“Care to explain what state I’m in besides dead?” Han asked aggravated to no ends with not getting any answers.
“What type of state you’re in doesn’t matter,” Obi-Wan snapped. “Someone has changed events drastically from what was suppose to happen here, and the Force is trying to compensate by granting you the ability to appear to Force sensitive beings, even though you are not one.”
“What was supposed to happen?” Han asked softening his tone.
“We can’t tell you yet, other than you live,” Qui-Gon explained.
Han folded his arms across his chest. “Anything you can tell me?”
Obi-Wan began to stroke his beard and pace. “Somehow we have to find out who tampered with the chamber purposely causing your death and prevent it from happening again,”
“Again? What are you talking about? It’s already happened?” Han asked as he watched the young Jedi walk around.
Qui-Gon took a step closer to the smuggler. “You have to stop thinking linearly. You are not bound by space and time. They no longer apply to you.”
Han’s jaw dropped slightly. “So I can go back in time?”
“Well yes.”
Han began to feel it again, his skin prickled and he became light headed as he slowly began to disappear. “Where am I going?”
An explosion of bright lights blinded him as he began to feel himself move, flying past planets and stars he watched the galaxy pass him by. Words could not describe the joys he was feeling soaring through space, and just as quickly as it had began, the journey ended.
When Han finally opened his eyes, he was lying on the floor of a space cruiser. He stood up and turned, just in time to feel someone completely walk through him. For an instant, he could read the persons thoughts and feelings, see their dreams and fears, and then it was gone once they had lost contact.
“Where is her Highness,” Han heard a man asked as they rounded the corner and entered the corridor he was in.
“She’s in communication Sir, waiting for the astro droids to finish decoding the transmission,” the second officer explain.
Han had a good bet as to who they were talking about, so he followed them. Minutes later, they were entering a large room full of personnel and communication equipment.
“You’re Highness?” shouted the first man.
“Over here Captain Antilles,” came the familiar voice of a certain Princess.
Han rushed ahead of the men and rounded a terminal to see a dark haired beauty watching the screen, reading the schematics of an enormous battle station. She looked exactly how he remembered her that day on the Death Star. There was a little more color in her cheeks and spirit in her eyes, but other then that, this was his Princess.
Han dropped down to one knee and began to study her features. “Impossible,” he breathed.
The Princess tilted her head and glanced over to his direction a moment before looking up at the Captain.
“Once we’re run a secondary scan to confirm this transmissions authenticity, you’ll have permission to leave,” she explained.
“We have a long journey ahead of us, Your Highness. It will be a few weeks before we make it to Tatooine.” There was a graveness in his voice which alarmed Han.
“I understand, please make the crew ready for when I give the signal.”
“Of course.” With that the captain and his fellow officer left.
Han began to put the pieces together. He had gone back a few years, right before the Princess was captured by Vader. He was so lost in thought he didn’t realize she was stare at him.
“Excuse me but, who are you?”

Well, you already know what I think about this opening chapter, but I'm really tired so I'll just go ahead and say that it's an awesome concept. I did a double take when I found out that Han is dead and talking to Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan.

And here you were worried about posting it. Told you it wasn't too corny!
Great job, Irish, with this beginning. It's an interesting twist; you know that Harrison Ford actually wanted Han to die at this point? When I heard that in an interview, I just couldn't believe my ears.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to see where this goes, and how having Han there in both ghost form (and his younger form who doesn't know anything) changes things!
Could you PM me when you update, please?
