No I'm not dead
. . . life has forced me to take a self imposed ban on writing fan-fic for a bit. I'm hoping to slowly get back, at least to finish this story. Anyway, I'll try and get to your reviews in this next week while on vacation
Hitting the beach to soak up some sun. Anyway, all credit for this chapter goes to Z, Fatty, Wyn and even X for bugging me non-stop. I can't promise when the next chapter might be up but I promise not to make it as long as this one. Also I want to thank whoever voted for this story for the Saga awards, I'm very humbled.

Chapter 10
“Looks like you’ve managed to cut off our only escape.”
It left her lips before she could even think about her tone or inflection. She didn’t really know what possessed her to antagonize the very people who were trying to save her, but seeing the living version of her ghostly friend and feeling a bit ornery with the lack of organization of the rescue, the Princess decided the best course of action was to be contrary. At least that’s what she told herself as she watched the smuggler’s reaction to her statement.
“Perhaps you’d like it back in your cell, Your Highness,” he spat back.
If their faces hadn’t been inches apart she might have come up with a witty response; however, she was too captivated by how alive his eyes were--the way they held a spark and a hint of mischief. A blaster shot exploded over their heads causing them to separate and breaking the momentary spell. With a rush, time resumed and her emotions yet again got the best of her; she made a mental note to throttle her ghostly companion as well as his living counter part once they were safely away.
Smoke clouded the corridors as the young boy next to her talked to droids on his comm unit trying desperately to find another way out. Leia, however, was having a different communication of her own, one through the Force. Hundreds of lives aboard the station were now focused solely on stopping them. Their thoughts screamed out over the blaster fire as their fear of failure and facing the wrath of Vader superseded any other contemplation in their mind. This new little group of hers needed to move and they needed to move fast.
Grabbing the blaster from the boy’s hand she shot the garbage shoot, sensing what the smuggler was about to shout, she barked first, “We’re already pinned down - this is our only way off this floor!”
Without waiting for a response she pushed on Luke’s back to make him jump down the shoot first. The Wookiee was next, though it took some pushing and a kick in the butt from the smuggler. Finally the two future friends were alone, and if not for the dozen of stormtroopers closing in on them, Leia might take the time to say something sweet.
“I hope you know what you’re doing,” Han shouted as he positioned himself to give her cover fire.
With a smirk she retorted, “You and me both.”
Landing with a thud on the garbage, Leia moved quickly as she heard the whoops and hollers of Han descending the vent. She moved towards the door and saw the Wookiee pushing on it. Looking down at her, he shrugged his shoulder.
“It’s probably magnetically sealed,” she said while looking at the door with intense concentration.
“There’s something alive down here,” Luke’s concerned voice caused Leia to turn and look down at him.
Reaching out with the Force she sensed what he was talking about. “He’s right get out of the water.”
Quickly, Luke moved but Han just stared at her another moment. Getting aggravated with his constant defiance she put her hands on her hips, “Han, stop being stubborn and get up here.”
The smuggler opened his mouth to say something but his eyes darted down to the water, within seconds he nimbly moved up to the ledge with the rest of them.
“Didn’t want you all having the fun,” he said, trying to conceal any sense of anxiety.
“Uh huh,” Leia said while eyeing him. Turning back towards the door she looked down at the locking mechanism.
Focus on turning off the magnet.
Qui-Gon’s quick whisper helped her focus enough to unlock the door. Pushing on it she stepped out and looked down the hall. Turning back she saw the shocked expressions on everyone’s face, including the Wookiee’s.
“Uh - it was on a timer,” Leia quickly explained. They all bought it as Han’s smug smile returned, Chewie stood a little taller and Luke . . . well he just kept gazing at her. Shaking her head and ignoring him, the Princess tip-toed down to the edge of the corridor.
She peeked around the corner then leaned her head out a little more to get a better view. The Princess wasn’t prepared for the sudden loud whisper right in her ear. “What are you doing?”
Literally jumping at the sound, she wheeled around on the smuggler. “What does it look like?!”
“I don’t know, that’s why I’m asking,” he growled.
She huffed before saying, “This entire base is looking for us. A little discretion might help us avoid any unwanted attention.”
“Who says we don’t want attention?” He asked.
Stepping aside Leia waved her hand forward. “Be my guest.”
She waited for Han to make his move; however, the growing presence of stormtroopers pushed her into action. Grabbing his arm, she led them down the hall around the corner and into a storage room.
“Look, Princess, if you wanted some alone time . . .” he trailed off as he winked.
Rolling her eyes, Leia folded her arms over her chest. “Han, will you stop thinking with your libido for two seconds,” she said with exasperation. “You’re a smuggler, so start acting like Luke and I are cargo and we might actually get out of here alive!”
The verbal scolding put him in his place as both Luke and Chewie, looked between the two.
“That’s the second time you called me Han,” he said with confusion. “How the hell do you know my name?”
“How’d you know he’s a smuggler?” Luke added.
Then Chewie woofed something but Han quickly dismissed it before turning back to her. Wringing her hands she racked her brain trying to think of something, but she was coming up blank, just like their expressions.
Clearing her throat she decided to take a shot in the dark, “The Rebellion keeps a record of all suppliers they deal with.”
“You worked for the Rebellion?” Luke croaked.
Completely caught off guard Han turned his back as he started to take the stormtrooper gear off. “It was only a couple of jobs here and there.”
Though she was trying to portray a sense of confidence in her statement, she couldn’t help show her sympathy for the pain which emanated off of him almost as strongly as the fear running through the battle station. The emotional wave in the Force lasted momentarily and he quickly became harder to sense again.
“All right, Your Worshipfulness,” he paused as he turned back to her. “Since you have all the answers, what’s our next move?”
Her eyes squinted with determination. “Get Ben Kenobi and get back to the Falcon.”
--
“You know she hugged me in the trash compactor the first time,” Han said breathlessly as he jogged to keep up with Qui-Gon.
“I’m sure you’ll get one soon,” Qui-Gon said flippantly.
“I’m not worried about me, I mean – you know – I’ve gotten farther than hugging with her in my lifetime.” Unconsciously his chest puffed out as he grinned.
The Jedi stopped and looked around the hallway. “Han, though you might think I’d be interested in the tale of your conquest with the Princess, I was alive at one point and do remember what a woman feels like.”
Qui-Gon looked at him and saw the dumbfounded expression on the smuggler’s face. “What?”
Nudging the Jedi with his elbow Han cracked a smile, “Didn’t know you had it in you.”
Rubbing the bridge of his nose Qui-Gon muttered to himself, “This will be a long two years.”
Han walked over to another hallway when he saw the flash of a cape, “Got him.”
The two dead spirits quickly took up position behind Vader, who was stalking the halls, looking for his prey.
“Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you,” Qui-Gon started. “We can not aide Obi-Wan in his fight. Our job is to distract Vader long enough for the Princess and yourself to get onto the Falcon.”
“And how do we do that?”
Qui-Gon scrunched up his brow as they continued trailing the Dark Lord, “Obviously you can’t appear to him, but perhaps you can inhabit a stormtroopers body and fire in his direction.”
Han nodded his head, “Okay, I’ll shoot at Vader, but what will you do?”
“I’ll play dead,” Qui-Gon said with a grin.
The smuggler took a moment to think about how that could help, and when no solution presenting itself, he finally spoke up. “How’s that gonna help?”
Glancing at Han, Qui-gon said, “You’ll see.”
Within another ten minutes Han was witnessing a battle he had only seen the ending too.
“You can’t win Darth. If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine,” Obi-Wan’s words rang out.
Han remembered his first encounter with the Jedi. He thought the old man was just a crazy fool with a lot of credits to throw around, but now, watching him fight Vader, watching the courage he portrayed, the smuggler felt a new sense of respect for Obi-Wan and wondered if he might have a bit of Corellian in him. He certainly was getting under the skin of the Sith, and Han couldn’t help but notice the few smirks Obi-Wan threw out as he would avoid a parry or block an advance.
“You should not have come back,” Vader growled before they became entwined in battle again.
Han couldn’t help but be captivated by them and that’s when he saw the movement out of the corner of his eye. Stormtroopers started to jog over to watch the fight and silently in the background a Wookiee, smuggler, Princess, farm boy and two droids were headed towards the Falcon. Han had remembered Luke stopping to watch the fight, but he himself had not looked up until he saw the robes of the old man on the ground. Now, as time slowed he watched the pained expression of his friend as he looked upon Obi-Wan for the last time.
Drawing up his lightsaber, the Jedi concentrated on gathering the Force around him. A blue light began to encompass him, and just as Vader’s blade made contact the light exploded, blinding the ghost. When Han looked back the younger spirit form of Obi-Wan now stood where the older version had just been.
“I have failed you, Anakin,” Obi-Wan whispered, his voice full of sorrow. “I have failed you.”
The scream of protest from Luke seemed like a distant echo as Han watched Vader stomp on the robes which were left behind. The Dark Lords head jerked towards the group by the ship.
“Stop them!” he yelled.
“Blast the door, kid!”
Han heard himself shout, but Vader reached towards the blast doors and kept them from closing fully. Jumping into a stormtrooper’s body Han ran towards the Sith and tackled him.
“My Lord, I thought they were trying to shoot you,” Han heard the Naboo accent escape his lips.
Grabbing him by the throat, Vader lifted the body up off the ground as if it weighed nothing. His grip around the trooper’s neck tightened momentarily before his whispered mechanical voice spoke, “I can feel you, Spirit, and can sense your presence.”
Han was about to speak when he felt himself be violently jerked out of the trooper’s body, collapsing to the ground he grunted with the exhaustion.
“There is still good in you, Anakin,” Qui-Gon’s voice filled the chaotic halls. “I won’t give up hope.”
Only a primal growl was Vader’s response as he took out his saber and began to cut the blastdoor open. The Jedi grabbed Han and they ran through the door and entered the hangar. To the smuggler’s surprise the group was still fighting off stormtroopers.
“I don’t remember this many.” Han panted as he looked around.
“He doesn’t want the Princess to escape,” Qui-Gon said as he looked around.
Taking a deep breath, Han ran towards another trooper and entered his body, within seconds he was firing on his own men, which caused enough of a distraction to allow the rebels a momentary break. Within minutes they had cleared enough of the troopers to board the ship. The living Han was about to shoot the trooper his ghostly spirit inhabited, when Leia pushed the blaster down and shock her head. Pulling off the helmet, Han made eye contact with her.
“Thank you,” she shouted from across the bay.
He just nodded before answering, “Go!”
“Come on,” the younger Han whispered as he gently pulled on her arm.
--
After a brush with two squadrons of TIE fighters the Falcon was safely away. The Princess sat in the cockpit gazing out the viewport thinking back on events wondering when life had taken such a drastic turn . . . then it hit her.
“That blasted ghost,” she murmured to herself before the obnoxious sounds of the younger Han could be heard coming towards the cockpit. Closing her eyes she took a deep breath and prepared herself for another round of verbal sparring.
“Not a bad bit of rescuing, huh. Ya know sometimes I amaze even myself,” he crowed with pride.
Leia had to rub her forehead as she said with exasperation, “That doesn’t sound too hard.” She looked up at him and tried to find something in his eyes that would indicate he shared the same soul as the spirit the Princess cared for. It was in this quiet moment that Han’s playful smirk tugged on his lips, and strangely enough it gave her solace that perhaps this arrogant, self serving, nerfheder might actually turn into the man she had fallen for.
He quirked an eye brow and chuckled a question, “What?”
Looking down at the floor she gathered her emotions and let her political skills kick in. “Tarkin let us go. They’re tacking us.”
“Not this ship, sister.”
She narrowed her eyes as she looked at him, “Last time I checked we were of no relation.” Pausing, she let a playful smile appear before continuing, “At least the information in Artoo is still intact.”
He let his arm drape over her seat as he leaned in slightly, his voice a little lower then before. “What’s so important? What’s he carrying?”
His shift in demeanor caused Leia to drop her guard slightly as she felt her body naturally leaning towards him. “The technical readouts of that battle station,” sighing heavily she looked down at the controls. “I only hope that when the data’s analyzed a weakness can be found.”
The smuggler just nodded. “So it’s not over?”
Looking out to the stars Leia could feel the weight of the Rebellion sit upon her small shoulders. “It’s just beginning.”
She felt his uneasiness about staying and decided to save him the effort of coming up with an excuses. “I expect you’d like to be paid for your services,” her voice hardened as she reestablished her defenses.
“Uh, yeah. Thanks,” he said with some discomfort.
Leia started to get up and didn’t even think about her next statement until it left her mouth, “I would hope you’ll use that money to pay off Jabba.”
“How in the seven hells . . .” Han trailed off before standing.
Mentally cursing herself, she kept her back to him hoping to come up with some new excuse as to why she’d know about his debt. “As I said earlier – ”
“I’ll spend my reward money however I like,” Han snapped.
Letting go of a breath she’d been holding for a few moments, the Princess turned back to the smuggler and arched an eyebrow. “I’m sure you will, Captain.”
“What’s that suppose to mean?”
Leia tilted her head and let her exasperation show. “It means what it means.”
She started to walk out of the cockpit when he shouted after her, “Wait a minute! Come back here.”
Luke was in mourning at the game table with the two droids as his commiserating partners, while Chewie was fidgeting with some wires. The Princess briskly walked into the galley with the smuggler in tow.
“If I want to blow my reward money on drinks and women, I’ll do it!” he shouted after here.
Pouring herself a drink, she placated him by nodding and answering him with sarcasm. “Yes, you could.”
Putting his hands on his hips, Han began to tap his foot. “It’s our reward money, why the hell do you care what we do with it?”
Slamming the glass down after taking a gulp, the Princess stormed forward. “I care if the money we give you goes back to a gangster who is hired muscle for the Empire. I care if the money goes to a slum that enslaves other beings. I care that money, which was earned out of a kind act, will be wasted on someone’s guilt because he can’t trust himself enough to do the right thing!”
With that she stomped away and found the crew quarters to hide in. Locking the door behind her, Leia slid down to the ground and brought her knees to her chest. Letting her head rest back against the metal, she grumbled to herself, “I’m going to kill you Han, you might already be dead but I’ll find a way.”
“I do get better with age - I’m like a fine wine that way,” came a whisper.
She snorted, “Nerf.” She opened her eyes to look around. “Too afraid to show yourself?”
However no response came, so the Princess resigned herself to sleep. Crawling over to one of the bunks she curled up into a ball and faced the wall.
“Where should I sleep?” the hushed voice of Luke faintly tickled her ears.
“Oh, for Force sake,” Leia huffed before reaching out her hand and unlocking the door with the Force. “It’s open!” She shouted, and then whispered to herself, “It’s like a bad holodrama that won’t end.”

Yeah, you are back!

That was my favorite scene - Qui-Gon and Han are really funny together!

“You’re a smuggler, so start acting like Luke and I are cargo and we might actually get out of here alive!”
I love that line. It should have been in the movie!!!!!!!!
I wonder what will happen to Ghost Han's memory as situations keep changing and what he knows happens does not happen. We are already seeing the small effects of this as Leia becomes more in tune with the force.

Whoooohooooo! You updated your story today, too!!
Leia's escaped from the Death Star, and Young/Alive Han is confused as to why she knows so much about him! LOL! This is great.

As for harassing you into writing another chapter--you're welcome.
This was a great and hilarious chapter. Love the interaction between Qui-Gon and Han. Please don't wait so long for another update.

The same, yet different - but Ghost Han does have a point - he
did
get a hug in the trash compactor before
I love how Leia keeps throwing her info at Han without thinking about it and getting caught. First his name, then his profession and finally Jabba! I'd say she's captivated our good Captain by simply being able to tell him about himself.
The argument about credits at the end was priceless
A bad holodrama
or a good one depending on who you ask! Awesome update - was so happy to see it!

!
I was thrilled when, while sitting on my couch, Wyn looked up at me and asked if she could use my DVD to do a scene check for you. YOU ARE WRITING AGAIN! How cool is that? *hugs*
First of all: CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR AWARDS! Best Romance and Best Canon Female… richly deserved, too.
Secondly: I loved this chapter! Now we really begin to see where Han has screwed with the future. I just hope that the consequences are not too dire. I’m not too worried though because you are a diehard when it comes to happy endings! Which is a relief right now, let me tell you!

Was that ornery? Or horny? I’m just saying… she’s fallen for this guy and never actually touched him and now, there he is, in the flesh… I just hope that the shock of who he was versus who she knows isn’t too great in the end!

Ouch. Another way the future was changed. She never gave Luke a chance. Which, when you think about it, is likely for the better but I have to wonder – if he doesn’t stay on for the beautiful princess??? Are his other reasons incentive enough? I like to think so, anyway.
And the whole garbage chute scene. What a difference! She just digs her hole deeper and deeper, though one can’t really blame her. Perhaps this idea of Qui-Gon’s wasn’t so great. What else is going to change all because of Han’s meddling? I mean, poor Han didn’t even get his hug! Will he still get his kiss in the belly of a space slug??
She looked up at him and tried to find something in his eyes that would indicate he shared the same soul as the spirit the Princess cared for. It was in this quiet moment that Han’s playful smirk tugged on his lips, and strangely enough it gave her solace that perhaps this arrogant, self serving, nerfheder might actually turn into the man she had fallen for.
Beautiful moment! Very touching.
After all the angst, drama, and overwhelming action… this:
“Oh, for Force sake,” Leia huffed before reaching out her hand and unlocking the door with the Force. “It’s open!” She shouted, and then whispered to herself, “It’s like a bad holodrama that won’t end.”
was just the right note to end on. Poor princess. It’s going to be a long few years, isn’t it?
