I was at my parents house when we heard the news.
The Jedi had tried to overtake the Republic and assassinate the Chancellor. He had survived and the Jedi were outlawed and in the process of being hunted down by the very Clones they had commanded. The separatists had surrendered and we would have peace.
When I heard this news I was both shocked and relieved. Shocked that we had lost the Republic but relieved that the War was over.
Then I learnt of my little sister.
During the news broadcast the holo had rung. My mother had gone to answer it.
I heard her scream out. I raced into the kitchen to find her curled up on the floor sobbing.
“ Mother what happened?”
“ It’s Padme – oh my baby! She’s dead.”
* * *
Bail Organa brought her body back to Naboo. When I heard of his arrival I left my children with the neighbours and went to see her.
She lay on a cold steel pallet, as pale as porcelain, dressed only in a hospital gown.
It took me a few moments to process the shock of seeing her so lifeless before I exclaimed.
“She’s pregnant!”
The physician nodded, “about eight months along, unfortunately she was discovered too late to save the child.”
I swallowed hard trying to keep in my tears. I never knew or suspected that my little sister was with child. If the baby had survived the loss of her may have been more bearable.
I looked down at her cold still face.
“ Oh Padme! Why didn’t you tell me?”
I heard to door open and turned around. Senator Bail Organa walked into the room and took my hand.
“Sola?”
I nodded.
“ I am very sorry for you’re loss – our loss - for Padme was a good friend of mine. My people are on Coroscant packing her personal belongings as we speak. Am right in assuming that you want her property returned to the family?”
“ Yes, thank you.” I turned back to the body, “ you say you were her friend. How close were you?”
“ I am not the father of her child if that is what you want to know.”
“ Then who is?”
“ I don’t know.”
* * *
It was the day before her state funeral when I found it. I was sorting through her belongings with mother when I found that small wooden box grandmother had given her so many years ago. I remember it was her special box. When we were children she would put seashells, birds nests and other ‘treasures’ she found in it. The box was locked but I picked it with a knife and lifted the lid.
The first thing I noticed was a wooden amulet on a silver chain. No surprise there I had seen her wear it often enough. I took it out and lay it on the table beside me. The amulet had been resting on a square of tissue paper. I unfolded it and a plait of dark blond hair fell into my palm. Leather strips and beads had been worked into the plait and one end appeared to have been singed. I knew who that plait had belonged to.
“ Mother…” I whispered.
“What is it Sola?”
I held up the hair, “ it’s a plait, a Jedi Padawans plait.”
I gave it to her and pulled out a rectangle of cardboard. It was a marriage certificate dated three years ago.
“ Married?” Mother exclaimed, “ my baby was married and she didn’t tell us?”
“Jedi were forbidden to marry remember?”
There was a small holo in the box I flicked it on. My sister stood before me in miniature dressed in white, the Jedi Padawan at her side.
“ Mother we have to hide this. The Jedi have been declared traitors to the Empire.”
“What if he’s still alive?”
“I doubt it, but even so no one must see this. It could put us all in danger. We could be suspected of being Jedi sympathises.”
“ What can we do with it? Burn it?”
“ No I have another idea.”
I put everything back in the box and went to get my hat and shoes.
“ Sola what are you doing?”
“ I have a plan trust me.”
I went to the Palace where her body was being prepared for burial. The handmaidens had dressed her in a flowing blue gown that did not disguise her condition. Her hair was brushed out and entwined with flowers. I placed the box under the hem of her dress and wrapped the amulet around her delicate hands.
“There you go little sister. You were good at keeping secrets but so am I.”

This was so beautiful!!!
As sad as it was, I do find it comforting that Sola and her family discovered the truth. Well - most of it anyway... What a lovely vignette you have here!
Way to go! I loved it!
