My thanks to my two beta-readers, Cydon Prax and Carla Tuma. They put up with my errors and made this story enjoyable. Thanks! This is based on the attack on the Jedi Temple, seen through the eyes of a Clone Trooper and a Jedi Apprentice. Hope you enjoy it--but regardless, I welcome all comments, good or bad!
Chapter 1: Escape
Trooper 14A20E held his blaster rifle loosely.
Hold it too tight, and your fingers lose their grip. No grip, and you cannot squeeze the trigger. All you can do is jerk it.
Trooper 14A20E’s finger twitched at the thought. His opponents were able to take a blaster bolt that would miss them, and turn it back against him and his comrades…
Never jerk the trigger. Your blaster rifle will move along with the trigger, and thus direct the bolt past the target needing termination.
Trooper 14A20E swallowed. He, and his comrades, were marching. Marching into battle. Straight columns, about to do what their Chancellor had ordered.
Order 66.
Trooper 14A20E looked in front of him, without his head revealing the movement of his eyes. There he was. A shadow, really. Trooper 14A20E had been trained to not let fear take hold, ever. But he had served under Skyw—no, Lord Vader, and he was referred to now. The man had been a cunning and mighty warrior, and all Clone Troopers had respect for him. The whole Galaxy had respect for him.
But what now?
Something’s bothering me—Stop it. You are a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. You are a cell of the body of a fighting man. Your only job is to serve the body. You are not a brain cell, so do not think. Only obey.
Trooper 14A20E had seen Sky—Vader’s eyes. Something had changed in their depths. Something had changed the warrior within.
Order 66.
Trooper 14A20E had known that Sk—Vader was to be the exception to that order. Apparently for this reason. He was dimly aware on the stone blocks beneath his feet. Cool looking in the night air, the massive rock steps gleamed slightly.
If you are thinking during a combat situation, you are failing the Chancellor, and the Republic. Focus on the task at hand.
Trooper 14A20E saw S—-Vader step up to someone dressed in the Jedi robes. In front of the massive doors, that person saw Trooper 14A20E, and his comrades. Suddenly, there was a flash of light, and the figure dropped to the ground. The cold, ice-blue of the lightsaber beam hissed back out of existence. Vader opened the doors.
When in combat, remember only your orders. Kill the enemy. Secure the objective. Rescue if some need rescuing. Obtain documents. Capture those needing interrogation. Terminate those needing termination. Destroy equipment. React in a moments notice, do whatever it takes to fulfill your orders.
Trooper 14A20E entered the Jedi Academy. Though he had never been here, it seemed familiar. Of course, they had been given holographic tours of the entire facility. Every nook, cranny, bedroom, meeting room, cafeteria, eating room, meditation room, and vantage point was known to them. This had been reviewed long ago, to assist them in carrying out their orders.
Order 66.
Trooper 14A20E scanned the halls. Before them, Vader walked with certainty, a confidence that Trooper 14A20E did not feel. He had seen Jedi in combat. It was a comfort to see at least one with them now. In a battle to take on hundreds.
Order 66. Mission goals: Kill the enemy; objectives: All Jedi terminated; none to be rescued; destroy documents; capture none; terminate all; destroy all equipment. React in a moment’s notice, do whatever it takes to fulfill your orders.
Trooper 14A20E felt himself go calm. This would be the last battle—would he live, or not?
Order 66.
* * * * *
A shout came from up ahead. Two Jedi, both in brown robes, raced forward, igniting their sabers. They screamed for help, and questions at the same time. Their green blades at the ready, they rounded the corner toward the danger they had sensed.
They never had a chance. Probably masking his presence in the Force, Vader ignited his saber the split second before they appeared. That cold ice-blue beam spitted one of the Jedi through the eye, and he fell quietly, with the blade cutting through the top of his head.
The other recovered long enough to bring his blade up to block Vader’s next swing, a snapping blow designed to remove the shoulder. The Jedi backed up, still calling for help.
Suddenly, Vader extended his hand, made a fist and then jerked it back toward himself. The Jedi rose from the ground, grabbing at his throat, and then came flying toward Vader. He landed at his feet, and a moment later his life was extinguished by a blazing sphere of energy burning through his heart.
Darth Vader turned to the commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. “Spread out and execute order 66. I will take the main hall. Make sure none escape.”
It was a brilliant spectacle, Trooper 14A20E thought. Brilliant, lights shooting all over the place, weaving about, flying back and forth, and ultimately winking out.
Of course, this scene cannot really be enjoyed. Most would find our actions revolting, in a moral sense. And one must have a moral sense to be able to enjoy any picture created.
A young Jedi was doing quite well. Still a padawan, his braid flailing about, the young one danced about the room.
Proper tactics. He’s smart. Won’t stand still so we can bring our fire power to bear.
The trail of the young one was obvious: littered with dead troopers.
Ten, no, nine. That’s a trooper cut in half.
A hiss and a cry of pain permeated over the noises of blasters firing.
All right, ten.
A trooper ran up behind the young one, and aimed for his back. Coming around the corner, the Jedi could not have seen him, and yet-—he somehow knew he was there. The brilliant blue saber danced around, caught a laser beam, and somehow directed it over the cream colored sleeve into the blaster of the trooper behind him.
Wow. This one is talented.
Trooper 14A20E held respect for the young man, as a warrior. But he had gone against the Chancellor, and one who did so had to be terminated.
More troopers poured into the room. Soon they would have enough to coordinate a mass-fire, where every trooper simply fired in the direction of the target. When that happened, not even the Jedi would be able to dodge and stop all the bolts.
The boy continued to pant, silent in his attempts. Seventeen troopers had gathered next to the entrance of this small side hall when the Jedi suddenly flipped beneath a bolt, and threw his saber. It danced about like mad, spilling cuts, slashing arteries, severing hands and legs and heads.
Trooper 14A20E mentally smiled, and it was mentally only.
His mistake.
The boy had gambled that the troopers’ eyes would follow his laser-sword. But they followed the target, as trained. Trooper 14A20E flipped a tiny lever on his blaster rifle, and fired. The edge of the stun blast caught the boy’s heel as he dodged behind a pillar, and knocked him unconscious.
A torrent of fire reduced the body to smoldering rags.
“No!”
The cry came from another boy. He looked to be fifteen, and held his lightsaber limply. Brown hair with a hint of red, the apprentice was slender, but seemed to have his boots on. The first Jedi they had seen with foot gear since the gate. Trooper 14A20E pivoted, took aim, and squeezed the trigger. The boy seemed yanked back by an invisible cable to fly into an even smaller side hall, and the bolt flew harmlessly by.
In the small hall, barely big enough for a good sized man—there was a good sized man. He had jet black hair, black robes, black boots, and even a black lightsaber handle. He ignited it, and the blade was black as well.
Interesting. I wonder where he found a black jewel?
The smile of relief on the face of the man was the opposite of black. Behind him were a bunch of children, including the teenager Trooper 14A20E had just shot at.
“Master, that hurt!” the boy protested.
“Much more will hurt if you don’t run, Jef!”
Trooper 14A20E and his comrades came up, and began to fire. The blade of the saber bounced in the corridor, effortlessly sending all the laser bolts back out the entrance.
“Quickly. Take the supply tunnel. There may be a way out, if you hurry! And children! The Force is your greatest ally! Jef, use your mind, and listen to the Force!”
The group disappeared, and the man in black held his ground for a whole five minutes. In that time, he cost half a company of troopers, who eventually had to blow apart the entrance tunnel he was in. Most of that work was done by blasters, because every time they got an explosive charge near, it seemed to erupt prematurely.
“Trooper 14A20E, take a fresh company and hunt down that group. They should be terminated by the party at the exit of the tunnel, but they are your responsibility.”
“Yes, sir.”
Trooper 14A20E’s mind raced as did his legs. This led to a maze of tunnels, which would be confusing for the children. They split up into platoons, and continued on for five minutes, searching.
Jef had herded the children along, ears straining back down the corridor where he had left his Master. He could still hear the familiar hum of the black energy blade, and the bwomp of laser bolts ricocheting off of it.
The sterile white tunnel split off in several directions. One was much larger than the others, and led a straight line. Turning to the wall, Jef’s eyes searched frantically for a map of the tunnel system. None was apparent. A tugging on his leg caused him to turn around. It was Debby, a small Twilek child. About three standard years, Debby could barely run without tottering. “Jef.” Her eyes were frightened. “Jef.”
“Yes, Debby?”
“Ware Maser?”
“He stayed behind, Debby. He’s keeping the boogie monsters in the white suits from getting you.”
Jef scooped Debby up and handed her to Christyne, the next oldest to him. “Take them all down the small side tunnels, but keep the large one in sight. I’m guessing it leads to a exit, and from the size of the large tunnel, probably a cargo speeder. I’m going to be the rear guard, and try to keep them off you. When you get there, don’t wait for me. Got it?”
Christyne, her eyes wide in her ten-year-old head, nodded, and brushed some tears from her cheek. They landed on Christyne’s dark-skinned arm. “Hurry, Jef.”
“Jef!” Debby squealed. “You comin wid us?”
Jef smiled, though he was getting worried about the lack of distance made. He carefully patted Debby’s headtails. “No, Debby. I’m going to keep those mean guys in white suits from catching you. It’s a game of hide and seek, okay?”
“Aw wite. Be cawefuw, Jef!”
Christyne and the other young ones scurried off. Jef unhooked his saber, and turned it over. He picked a corridor, and waited just past the entrance for the first signs of the clone troopers. It didn’t take long.
Then he saw it. On his infra-red eye piece, imbedded in his helmet. One form, standing around the corner. Trooper 14A20E raised his hand, and chopped it down halfway. “Take him.”
They leaped around the corner, their weapons tracking. Nothing. Even the infra-red signature had disappeared. They moved in closer, their white boots clacking loudly on the floor. The room the figure was supposed to be in divided itself into the entrance to a trio of tunnels.
Trooper 14A20E gestured. “He had to take one of these three. Trooper 14A20F, scan for footprints and—“
They heard a sound to their left, and turned, firing. A snap-hiss to their right and now behind them belonged to the teenager, Jef. His yellow lightsaber was in them, among them. He gestured, and Trooper 14A20E was thrown against a wall violently. He blacked out, but not before he saw that the boy—no, Jef, had destroyed his entire platoon. Jef turned and studied him, the shook his head. “I know you’re alive.”
The Force. He can see I’m alive, though I’m not moving. He used a mind trick to distract us.
Jef turned, and ran down a corridor.
* * * * *
Two minutes later, an injection flowing through his veins to clear up the concussion, Trooper 14A20E was back in the hunt. His new platoon was ahead of the boy, and they were creating a trap. The large group were driving the Jedi—-no, Jef—-toward them. They arrived at the stage for the trap, a large room.
It was circular, pure white, and led to a dozen other tunnels. A supply route for droids, kept by droids, and known by droids. And the Grand Army of the Republic.
His earpiece spoke. “He’s coming your way. Terminate immediately.”
Jef came running in, then froze. All twelve troopers leaped out, a good five feet away, and lowered their blasters. A perfect circle. The lad’s mouth worked, and Trooper 14A20E knew that the boy knew he would never be able to push them all with that Force of his.
It all had happened in a second, and the boy’s finger twitched the next second before twelve triggers were squeezed.
There was a clatter as twelve blaster packs hit the floor, dropping from their weapons. The noise overrode the click of the triggers.
For all of a second the troopers looked through their helmets at the empty blasters. In all of the next second, Jef cut down a comrade and vanished into the tunnel system.
“He’s running for the exit, now. Close and lock blast doors, all units converge on those coordinates!”
“What about the Jedi younglings he was protecting?” Trooper 14A20M asked.
“Terminated.”
Trooper 14A20E and his platoon, minus one member, arrived at the locked blast doors the moment after Jef had. They opened fire, and the saber danced in his hand. The look on the boy’s face was sad, Trooper 14A20E observed.
He must know about the younglings.
Yet, Trooper 14A20E observed, he had an expression of joy at the same time.
He must be in touch with the Force.
Trooper 14A20E also observed he had better kill Jef quick. More troopers appeared, but the boy sent every bolt into the closest trooper.
Trooper 14A20E activated his comlink while firing. He would be the closest soon, but—-“Bring in the shielded E-Webs.”
The shielded E-Webs were the Grand Army of the Republic’s version of the droidekas, or Destroyer Droids. They were shielded, automated, had more powerful bolts, but were not as mobile or quick in setting up. And Trooper 14A20E was betting the Jedi couldn’t handle two of them.
The guns were set on the ground behind four troopers providing cover fire, and were activated. The four troopers went down to more ricochets, and then the E-Webs had unfolded and opened fire.
Trooper 14A20E and his comrades quit shooting. Jef could scarcely keep up at the moment, and was clearly about to go under. Normally they would keep firing, but this far underground they could not be marked as friendlies by communications scanners. If they had blasters out for a moment, the E-Webs would consider them hostiles as well.
Trooper 14A20E cursed. He had gambled that the Jedi would never be able to hold the E-Webs, and so far it wasn’t working. It would have been better if these E-Webs were mounted by troopers, but some Kaminoan weapon designer just had to think otherwise.
Jef continued to send the bolts into the shields of the E-Webs, but it did no good. He gritted his teeth. His master’s last words came to him.
Jef, use your mind, and listen to the Force!
“Thanks for the advice, Master, but only Yoda could handle this bunch!” he growled. The Force was singing through him, but he was tiring. And suddenly, the Force spoke to him.
You don’t have to be Yoda. Be who
you
are, and you might live.
With a touch of his mind, he pressed the button on the other side of the blast doors. They began to open, and the E-Webs continued the rain of fire. A yellow blur represented his lightsaber, and he was doing better than he had ever dreamed of. And suddenly, he laughed. The Force was with him indeed.
Trooper 14A20E looked in astonishment as the boy suddenly let go of the saber with his right hand, but still continued his defense against the onslaught.
It was incredible! Nobody is this fast!
The releasing hand slowly stretched out toward an E-Web, and then made a fist. With the latter gesture, there was a crunching noise, and the shield projector crumpled at though a Star Cruiser had been dropped on it. A moment later, the E-Web was torn apart by its own laser beams.
Tempted to reach for his blaster, Trooper 14A20E saw one of his comrades succumb to the lure—and the bolts of the second E-Web. In the tunnels leading up to this spot, the rest of his company waited, standing in line, halted by their own machine.
With a whine, the second shield shut down, and so was the E-web. Then Jef was backing out the door, and Trooper 14A20E knew he was about to lose his target. He and his comrades followed the Jedi, firing.
Jef recognized one of the troopers. The one, the leader of the group he had ambushed. And apparently the one in charge of killing him. And the one he had allowed to live.
It would be so easy, so easy to direct a bolt into the clone. A darkness called to him, but something else whispered in his ear.
If you are to live, then serve the Force, and keep life.
Besides, there was the speeder. It sat outside the temple, and held…bodies. The younglings he was supposed to protect, and the younglings whose deaths he had already felt. On the top of the pile was Debby. She had been shot at least four times. “Spast!” Jef backed toward the speeder, feeling exhausted. He was so tired…If he lowered his saber, it would all be over.
Who would bury the younglings?
“Bring grenades!” Shouted a clone trooper.
The ones in rear, still in the tunnel system, gave an impression through the Force in response. They were the ones. He had to live now. And yet, Jef was aware, aware of more than the battle. The temple loomed over him, bathed in the light of fire. He would miss it, whether he died or escaped.
The Force called to him, and he saw the first grenade come sailing through the air. He batted it back with a Force push, toward the group of troopers who were massing their fire and using their own bodies as shielding for the grenade throwers. A trooper jumped atop the grenade, foiling his idea.
He was so tired. So tired. The Force took over, directing his blade, and the way he used the Force. They were one, once he let go. And he had to. He was so tired.
Jef stepped away, and the Force filled the body he had left. It immersed him, filled him like water did a clear glass. He watched in astonishment as the grenades not yet thrown were activated with a flick of his hand. He watched as the troopers far enough to be clear of the blast were instead brought down with ricochets from his lightsaber. And the Force whispered to him to take over once more, and it would be over…
At the end of his group of twenty, Trooper 14A20E heard numerous beeps coming from the four troopers with grenades. Too many. All the grenades on their belts were lit up, and in four seconds—-in four seconds, Trooper 14A20E recognized, they would all be dead.
And the Jedi would escape.
“No!” Trooper 14A20E pointed to a monstrous beam as the thought crossed his mind. The column was ten feet in diameter, and solid stone. Bigger than the one lying on the floor at the docking bay on Geonosis when he had helped Senator Amidala take Ana—No, Vader—to get his arm treated.
“Blow it with the grenades! They’ll topple it onto the speeder! He won’t escape!”
Trooper 14A20E knew the reinforcements would be the ones to finish his job, but it did not matter. He was a soldier of the Grand Army of the Republic, and this was his assignment. He would accomplish it, even if it cost him his life. And he had no regrets.
The grenadiers managed to throw six grenades before they all went off. The explosion threw Trooper 14A20E into another massive stone block. He hit the edge with his spine, but the force of the explosion wrapped his body around the corner, a bruising impact, he knew. There was a crunch, and the world went black.
With a rumble, the stone column shifted, and began a slow fall. Right toward the speeder, filled with the bodies of his friends. Jef wanted to weep, not because he had been able to escape, but because they would not be properly buried.
Courage!
The Force said to him.
How? Even Master Yoda couldn’t stop this pillar. No matter how much you fill me, we can’t move that column!
Later, Jef would wonder when he started to see the Force as an individual. But he would always remember the response he got back.
You don’t need to move the pillar.
A tired Force push was almost impossible for him, but he did it. The speeder moved just out of the way. It took fifteen seconds to get into the speeder and fly away from the rubble, but as he did, Jef talked to the Force one last time that night.
Why? Why was I allowed to escape?
A whisper in the air sounded, right next to his ear. He spun, looked. Nobody. Nothing but the wind.
“You’ll see.”

Very strong piece. Loved the emotion the padawan felt. 14A20E had a great perspective and voice also.
I wonder if we're going to see more of our young apprentice?

Its refreshing to see that the Jedi lived. Usually in these things, the writer likes to make the Jedi die. Finally everything in its proper place. Clone- dead. Jedi- alive.

Oh boy. You all have some surprises coming. Well, at least one. And I might as well put the disclaimer in now: I don't own this story--it's based off that which George Lukas created, and shall probably stay that way.
Also, I welcome all comments! As a noob, I know there's lots of advice to be learned. Thanks!

The acceptance of others is not a guarantee. Like everyone else, a Jedi is accepted or not based on his behavior. The Jedi who believes that he is more important than others only demonstrates that his opinion is to be ignored.

That was very nicely done and like others have said it's a powerful piece.
I'd like a PM if this fic is to continue.

I've gotta echo what others said - that was very powerful, and the idea that the force started to talk to him as a person was a very very nice twist.
If you add more to this please pm me, you've done a great job.
