Nice one mate! I loved how you showed Anakins name turn to Vader in the troopers eyes.

Loved the two view points. I like the idea of two small fish in such a big pond. It something I do in my stories too (cheers for your comments on my story by the way!)

Well written and with some great emotional and action pieces "You don't need
to move the pillar": brilliant.

Bravo.

Laughing softly as he finished patting the soil into place, Jef rose and knelt, taking in the spot. Off to the side in the midst of the bushes, nobody would notice this final resting place. But they’ll always be here. Brushing some tears away, Jef stood-—rising up no more that five feet from the foremost Clone in a pursuing group. The Clone halted in surprise.

Jef’s finger depressed the button and the yellow shaft of light exploded from the silver handle. Whipping his lightsaber around in a spectacular figure eight, Jef halted the beam, pointing it right at the Clone. He spoke
, and his voice could be heard clearly. “For Debby.”
I really liked this last part, it pulls at your heartstrings and then makes you want to kick butt. Well written story Raptor.
I think my favorite part is seeing things from the clone's perspective and hearing his thoughts. Lots of good tech details. Please add me to your pm list. I will be interested in Jef's evolution as well as the troopers.

I'm finally back! Many, many apologies for my lateness in posting! However, this is a huge amount of text, my effort to make up for the time. I hope you all enjoy!

Chapter 5: Sacrifice and capture.

14A20E watched as Jef minced his reinforcements. The two squads took up firing positions in a staggered formation around the Padawan. Rather than standing his ground, Jef moved amongst the Clones. The line was disappearing. Troopers and their body parts littered his wake. The two squads were reinforced by another, but he continued his onslaught with no regard to the added numbers.

Reaching down to his belt, Trooper 14A20E removed a light grenade. All he had to do was arm the thing for an automatic contact explosion. Jef could be dead in a heartbeat. Raising the explosive, Trooper 14A20E prepared to hurl it.

Goodbye, you accursed Padawan.

Trooper 14A20E mentally instructed his arm to lob the weapon. It did not respond.

What’s the matter with me?

Slowly, he lowered his hand. He was suddenly overcome with an urge to let the Jedi live, even as the Padawan cut down more of his Clone brothers. His helmet hid all emotions—-and nobody could see the turmoil within.

I want to kill the Jedi. No, I need to kill the Jedi.

But Jef has his life figured out—-why take it from him now?

Jef?—-Great, now you’re calling the Padawan by a name.

Yeah, I guess I am. And what of it? He has a name—-I don’t.

Trooper 14A20E, throw that grenade! If you want a life, you’ll kill him. He planned to kill the Emperor, remember?

Yes, but—-

No buts about it. Remember the Emperor? The one you swore allegiance to? What about the Republic?

14A20E looked at Jef. The fifteen-year-old looked much older than he was, not surprisingly. No. Jef couldn’t have plotted to kill Palpatine. He’s too young—-maybe his superiors were preparing for an assassination, but not a fifteen-year-old.

You gave your word. Are you going back on that now?
Trooper 14A20E thought. Make your decision.

14A20E froze even mentally, and suddenly the two arguing halves of his brain merged back into one. Thoughts whirred about confusingly.

Still standing there, holding the grenade, 14A20E saw Jef spin about and sever two more Clones right at the belt line. Turning the Padawan saw Trooper 14A20E with the grenade in his hand.

Jef automatically began to throw his hand forward, ready to Force push the grenade away. To his surprise, the Force was giving him no warning. Jef halted, his hand half raised. Uh, hello? He called mentally. You still awake up there? Jef hardly noticed the Clone looking over his shoulder.

Simultaneously the Clone dodged, the Force spoke, and Jef flung himself to the side. Jef’s dive was pushed on by the Force, but his twelve foot leap was lengthened by the explosion that sent him into a thicket of bushes that sported huge pink blossoms.

Tucking himself in Jef somersaulted as he made contact with the ground and came smoothly to his feet. Where he had been standing but a moment ago, the ground was chewed up, the earth smoking. Wind blew wildly around him, and Jef knew more V-Wings had arrived.

Reaching out with the Force, Jef found the Clone. The man was picking himself up from his own bushes, and dusting himself off, something Jef had never seen before. Tentatively Jef opened himself to the Clone’s mind—-and discovered something strange.

He’s normal. Thinking almost completely normal. He moved for cover when he saw the V-Wing open up on my back. Blinking, Jef refocused on the Clone who turned off the grenade he’d been holding a moment ago and then scooped up his blaster rifle. The grenade triggered Jef’s memory.

It’s him. The one you wouldn’t let me kill.

That’s right, the Force answered. He’s been following you since you escaped.

“Why didn’t you let me kill him then?” Jef spoke this aloud, and the Clone turned and looked at him, but didn’t fire.

He needed to continue hunting you. It’s his destiny.

“Really?” Jef said, getting exasperated. “Am I—-“

Dodge!

Leaping again, Jef this time went straight up and deflected one of the massive beams into a nearby pond, where a colossal explosion of steam erupted from the blast.

Go go go go go!

Jef sprinted when he saw more Clones arriving. These were on the new speeder bikes, and at least fifty more were in sight. One look at his yellow saber, and they opened fire.

Threading his way between some massive trees, Jef was aware that the V-Wing was about to make another pass, this time with a wing mate. He realized he probably wouldn’t be able to take them down like last time.

That stupid Clone! Why didn’t I kill him when I had the chance? And how’d he survive, anyway? Jef suddenly sensed a familiar figure ahead. “Lyn’das!”

The Twi’lek was sprinting—-slanting his path to take him under the cover of a water flow checkpoint. Located in the southwest corner of each residential section, these massive pump houses easily provided more than enough water for the people of Capatice. He was pursued by a platoon of Clones.

Struck with an idea, Jef altered his route to intersect Lyn’das’. Hearing a roar, they spun to see the two V-Wings that had been following Jef line up and open fire.

The two Jedi slipped into the Force, and in so doing, slipped into their element. Blue and yellow bars of light danced about, catching each massive beam and diverting it elsewhere. Suddenly, Jef sprang onto one of the enormous pipes and slashed a gaping hole with a sweep of his saber. The blast of water he had experienced in the housing complex was nothing compared to this. Like a natural geyser, the spray rocketed into the sky and enveloped the pair of V-Wings.

The fountain flipped the craft over and they collided, despite their pilots’ best efforts. The water doused the immense explosion spreading the debris around evenly. Despite the stroke of luck, Jef was getting worried. Clone Troopers were materializing out of mid air, it seemed.

The Clones opened fire, and Jef stood his ground. The Force was with him, and slowly he submerged himself in it. Duck, parry, send a bolt back to a Clone; Jef only noticed the approaching squadron when the Force sent a feeling of dread into his heart. Spinning, he spied them, and then Jef knew he would die. First a pair, then another, and then four more—-the same flying war platforms that had saved the Jedi at Geonosis—-that had saved Jef and his master. And now they would kill him.

Rugged, combat-equipped repulsorcraft, the Republic attack gunships had been used to rain down blistering barrages of laser and rocket retribution against the droid forces of the Separatists. Each winged gunship was covered in weapons, offering air-to-ground and air-to-air support as well as serving as an infantry transport. The front of the gunship featured hunchback-style cockpit bubbles, wherein the gunship pilot and copilot gunner sat in single file. Chin-mounted on the craft was a pair of laser cannon turrets. On the gunship's dorsal surface were its primary armaments, two massive rocket launchers fed by rear-mounted missile belts. The vessel's splayed wings had a pair of automated bubble-turrets, with composite-beam laser weaponry. A second pair of bubble-turret cannons extended on articulated arms from the troop cabin, and was gunner-operated by clone troopers encased within the armored spheres. Air-to-air rockets were slung on the ventral surface of each wing. Rounding out the gunship's armaments was a single tail-cannon that provided covering fire for troops.
In short, 17.4 meters long, 3 anti-personnel laser turrets, 4 composite-beam laser turrets, 8 light air-to-air rockets, 2 mass-driver missile launchers per ship—-and all twelve ships versus Jef and Lyndas. Not to mention four clones per troop cabin, who would also provide more overhead fire.

Lyn’das looked to Jef, and a message flashed between them in the Force. It was only feelings, not words—-but they knew what the plan was. Jef stepped to the fore, taking the brunt of the ground fire, while Lyn’das lowered his saber and focused.

The Twi’lek extended his hand, and suddenly the water spurting into the air seemed to take on a mind of its own. The pilot of the first craft noticed, first a thickening mist, then rainfall. It wasn’t enough to take down the craft, and the pilot plunged through.

Jef was in his element. Ever since the Temple, becoming one with the Force has been a lot easier. However, doubt gnawed at him. If his full-blown Jedi master couldn’t stop the Clones, how could he? Of course, this clumsy bunch isn’t the 501st. As more troopers appeared, Jef knew he had to eliminate the ground threat so he and Lyn’das could focus on the gunships together.

Any Clone Jef spied with a grenade got an unpleasant surprise. The bomb activated with a beep, but the din of gunfire was too loud for the soldier to notice it. The only sign of anything wrong was when the grenade detonated, shredding the Clone and anything nearby.

Lyn’das suddenly drew the Force back to himself, and the four Clones were pulled from the cabin of the gunship, falling thirty feet to the ground. The Republic craft paused, then two rockets flared from its launchers.

Shouting, Lyn’das dove behind a nearby wall, which surrounded a small pool and a fountain. Jef didn’t hear the warning—-all he knew was the Force directing his blade, as he tried desperately to keep up with the fusillade of blaster bolts flying his direction. One bolt he batted aside, intersecting an incoming rocket. Its premature detonation threw Jef to his left, near the far wall.

Suddenly, Lyn’das was back on his feet. “I am sick of being shot at!” The yellow-garbed Twi’lek bellowed. Spinning back toward the hovering craft, Lyn’das focused on the pilot and Force pulled. The transparisteel windshield did not block the Force—-the pilot suddenly was slammed against the control panel. Wrenching himself away, he activated the comlink.

“In firing position, awaiting orders.”

The four bubbles twisted around in their sockets, and Lyn’das knew he would be dead.

* * * * * * * * * *

Commander Drey Elson watched from a holo-camera mounted on the foremost gunship. “Hold rocket fire!” he yelled. As the chase had gone on, he had grown more and more excited. The commander had despaired of ever seeing action at Capatice.

Most officers saw his position as a dream assignment, but in the back of his mind was the memory that he had failed before, on another world and to a small band of rogue warriors. Even though his activities had bordered on the illegal side, Drey held a bitter grudge against the group that had been pardoned in the Republic court system. They had taken vigilante action and gotten off free. He was sent to this world, an annoying reminder that he had been beaten by force and by law.

The vigilantes had been irate at the outcome too. They had pushed for the death sentence, but it had been impossible for them to prove his connection with the disappearance of some of their family members. He was guilty—-but someday he would return with a full battalion of Clones and finish the group. The new Emperor would never send him to prison for anything.

As he sat there Drey Elson refocused on the current battle. The two Padawans were displaying incredible skill in dicing his Clones, while the gunships encircled them. When Drey gave the signal, all the gunships would fire at once. The fusillade of rockets would annihilate these enemies of the state.

The Republic gunships completed the circle, and an officer turned to Drey. “Commander, awaiting your sig—“

Drey smiled, then looked to the officer, curious as to why the man didn’t finish the sentence. Elson’s mouth dropped open, and a cold prickle swept across his body. The officer toppled, falling to the ground, a four-inch dart protruding from his throat. All the other officers, everyone in the room—-sported a similar piece of metal buried in vital spots.

The image of the dart was all too familiar to Drey Elson. He forgot about giving the order, forgot about the Padawans. He stood slowly and turned to face his death. Nobody was visible. They’re here. Maybe more than one.
A voice reverberated throughout the room, low, and with a hint of controlled fury. “Very foolish of you, commander, to leave no guards to protect you.”

Drey peered around him, his knees beginning to shake. “You—-you left your planet.”

“You left first. Otherwise, I would not have had to follow you here.”

“But, but—-you and your village have never left—-“

“Things change, Arian Tillisk.”

His real name washed over him. I’d almost forgotten it. A tinkling of broken glass alerted him to the fact that the final security camera had been destroyed. So, my death will be in person.

Arian Tillisk saw fear, and it overcame him. Suddenly, he dropped to his knees, flailing his arms out, looking around wildly. He screamed hoarsely. “Kill me, already!”

A shadow materialized in front of him. The figure looked him in the eyes, and Arian Tillisk knew he was gone. “With pleasure.”

Arian Tillisk, aka Drey Elson, was decapitated. The figure knelt and wiped the blade of his strange weapon on the body, while the head rolled over to the door. As if on a cue and disgusted by the carnage, the door hissed up, and the head went beneath and bumped the foot of a security guard. The last of the garrison charged into the room, leveling their weapons at the figure.

“You there!” called the chief of security. “Surrender your…” he paused, “…weapon.”

“I will not.”

The chief involuntarily took a half step back. The voice held no trace of fear.

“He deserved to die. Let me go, and you will not be harmed. Any attempt to detain me will result in your demise.”

The officer laughed. “I doubt it. We have blasters, and there’s no way you can get even one of us. You will surrender, now.”

The shadow, definitely humanoid, laughed in return. “You don’t know what you’re up against. I could finish you all without harm to my person-—but time is of the essence.”

The Security Chief and his team were cut down in exactly half a second. Even as they lay bleeding on the floor, it seemed to them that the walls and furniture had become possessed with some spirit, striking them down with a variety of weapons. The shadow had not moved.

In a moment, the room was empty, the darts removed.

At the city market, people crowded to a high spot to see the fight between Clones and Jedi. Behind them, a huge eruption more than a mile away rocked the city. The people turned, gawking at the fireball that continued to unroll into the blue sky. A murmur swept through the throng, and there was one thing they agreed on. The garrison had been demolished.

* * * * * * * * * *

Jef spun around and looked at the surrounding gunships. They didn’t fire then suddenly wavered slightly. Confusion flowed through the Force from the pilots and gunners. Watching in astonishment as they suddenly began communicating with hand signals, Jef and Lyn’das realized at the same time:

“They’ve lost their communications!” Jef yelled with triumph.

“Yeah, but we’re dead anyway!” Lyn’das screamed back. “They’re not gonna wait forever!”

A dozen Clone troopers continued their fire, and Lyn’das had an idea. “Cover me!” He turned and darted into the pump house.

A whine penetrated the chaotic noise of blaster fire and lightsaber hum. Jef glanced up for a brief moment to note the rocket belts rotating fresh rounds into position.

Lyn’das gave a warrior’s cry and sliced the water main inside the pipe house. For a moment, water sprayed out the gap, and then the entire conduit ruptured. The thin wall separating the water works from the public bowed, then burst—-the flood washed the Twi’lek away.

With his back to his friend, Jef continued to deflect the concentrated fire when the Clone troopers faltered. A roar sounded behind him, and Jef glanced over his shoulder. A wall of water carrying fragments of the building rushed down at him.

Leaping from pure instinct, Jef flew ten meters straight up, and the rush went by underneath. Landing in the backflow, Jef kept his feet, but the surge was gone, carrying away Clone warriors who still attempted to fire at Jef. In the midst of the Clones was a familiar yellow sweater—-Jef reached out and levitated his friend from the disappearing tide.

Splashing over, Jef grabbed Lyn’das and helped him to his feet. For a moment they stood gasping for air, while the gunships hovered motionlessly. Then a warning whispered through the Force—-Jef and Lyn’das leaped away as a long beam sliced through the flow of water that had been rushing past their ankles.

A Clone pilot had fired the two turret lasers that were imbedded in the nose of his ship, long streaks that continued to project from the guns. He fired again, targeting the Twi’lek—-the Jedi ignited his saber and caught a shot.

Lyn’das gave in to his anger and suddenly seized a power he’d been trying to ignore and redirected the green line. It arced up and caught a different gunship in the bottom. For a moment the armor resisted, but it was made for small arms fire, and the energy line sliced it in half, burning through the repulsorlifts and igniting a rocket. The craft exploded, dropping into the water. Next, the alien turned and, with a burning surge in the Force, tore the wing off another hovering gunship. It toppled and then plummeted out of sight on the other side of the wall.

Jef waited, wondering if the other gunships would open fire as well. A scream from a nearby ledge twisted him around. A Clone trooper with the color identification for a major had pulled himself out of the water. “Fire!”

An explosion knocked Jef back under the water, and he barely disengaged his saber. Struggling up for air, he looked on in astonishment as two more of the gunships spiraled toward the ground, leaving a smoking trail in the air. The rest were rocking slightly, seeming to be blown about by a strong blast of wind. Then the gunships steadied and turned toward Jef and Lyn’das.

Simultaneously they threw out their hands, forming a bond that allowed them to wrench the rocket launchers, forcibly tearing them from the ship. A dark blur shot overhead, and a pair of cannons hammered three more of the gunships with lasers, the green bolts of energy shredding them into flying shrapnel. At the last moment, the black fighter gunned its major thrusters and vanished. The resulting wind almost blew the gunships away before the repulsorlifts adjusted.

A small hum, growing louder, announced the pending arrival of the small black craft. The gunships rotated and began launching rockets in the direction of the sound. Jef and Lyn’das turned and ran, making use of the distraction.

“You think it’s the same person who interrupted their communications?” Lyn’das yelled.

“Probably.” Jef panted, as they sloshed around the corner. Entering the familiar market place, they splashed across, leaving sloppy wet footprints on the dry cobblestones. An explosion erupted behind them, and then the same dark craft roared over the market place, slowing and dipping its wings.

“It’s Daysun!” Jef whooped, and then the sound died in his throat as a pair of V-Wings dropped in on their friend’s tail.

They had almost reached the entrance for the docking bay berths when four Clones leaped out, brandishing their blaster rifles. “Halt, Jedi!”

O, right. Lyn’das sent the feeling through the Force to Jef, who could easily interpret. Even if we did stop, I doubt you guys would peaceably escort us to the station. The Clones confirmed this by opening fire.

So close were Jef and Lyn’das that they paused, then backed up for a moment, deflecting beams. Jef began a spin, designed to catch two blaster bolts and direct them back to the owners when a pair of arms wrapped around his waist.

“I’ve got him!” A man shouted, trying to tear Jef to the ground. “We’ll all get the reward!”

Jef continued his spin, throwing the man off. Surprisingly agile, the money-hungry citizen rolled to his feet, even as the bolts arrived with Jef’s saber. A tweak in his aim, and the twin blue lasers were reflected at the man. His eyes grew wide, and wider still when the first nicked his belt buckle and the other punched a hole in his bare foot.

The man screeched in pain and hopped, holding onto his injured right foot. His newly disconnected belt loosened, and his pants dropped, exposing the white briefs beneath for everyone arriving at the market to see.

Jef finished his spin and watched in astonishment as all four Clones levitated into the air. They dropped their weapons and clawed at their throats, while writhing in pain. Lyn’das visibly closed his fist, and a crunching noise resounded from inside the troopers’ armor. Before Lyn’das released them to fall to the ground, Jef felt their Force signature fade.

Wounded-Foot was still dancing around the market, shrieking, screaming, attempting to hold his foot and pants, and shouting oaths at the two apprentices. For the most part, the people of Capatice were laughing at the spectacle, despite the carnage.

Jef focused and then touched their minds with the Force. A simple suggestion, and he knew that when questioned they would reply that the Jedi had snuck back into the housing unit. Jef and Lyn’das ducked beneath the arch.

Scrambling for berth 30, they stopped for a moment next to an overlook of the grassy plain. From there they could easily see Daysun. Another column of smoke was rising from the prairie, and Alongi was in trouble. Seven of the V-Wings were right on his tail and were cornering him even in the sky. Jef watched, troubled, as Daysun suddenly accelerated hard, looped up and behind a V-Wing, punching twin holes through the cockpit. A shot from one of the Clone craft blasted Daysun’s rear, and he spun out of control.

The V-Wings fell in, mere meters from Alongi’s tail. Jef could feel Daysun starting to panic, then an idea floated through the pilot’s mind. A spray of garbage suddenly erupted from the tail, smashing dents into the fighters and causing them to falter.

“C’mon, Alongi, get out of there!” Lyn’das growled.

The V-Wings formed up again, aware of the empty trash chute, and then fired. The first two blasts finished Daysun’s shields, the next three penetrated the cockpit, the main engine housing, and the fuel tank. The craft exploded.

“No!” Jef screamed, not hearing Lyn’das’ cry. “Not him, too!”

For a moment they stood silent, with tears streaming down their faces. Then Lyn’das grabbed Jef’s arm. “We’ve still got to hide, Jef, or his sacrifice will be for nothing.”

“Sithspawn, Lyn’das—-why do you want to hide with me? Everyone who helps me winds up dead!” Jef cried bitterly. The heat of battle had left, and suddenly he was a fifteen-year-old again.

“Darn it, Jef—-are you gonna blame yourself for what Palpatine did? Someday, we’ll make him pay for all this. Let’s go!” Lyn’das said and then punched Jef solidly in the chin.

The pain and stars brought Jef back to reality even more. Numbly, he allowed Lyn’das to lead him to the freighter that was bound for Corellia. They couldn’t sense anybody on board and snuck in.

“The engine room would be the best place to hide.” Jef managed. “They might inspect the cargo.”

Inside, they huddled in a corner, behind the hyperdrive. For a full hour they sat there, trying to ignore the pain inside. Slowly, they sensed various people board, and then the ship shuddered and began to rise. Jef had almost cried himself to sleep when he sensed somebody coming. Reaching out with the Force toward their mind, he tried to dissuade the being. The hyperdrive is fine. Don’t worry about it.

The person accepted the thought easily—-and still continued to come. Jef furrowed his brow and glanced around the room. There was nothing in there but the hyperdrive, Lyn’das, and himself. The door opened, and someone stepped in. A darkly tanned human male looked at them, dressed in kowlen shirt and pants, both jet-black.

Leaping to his feet in one fluid motion, Jef Force-pushed the man into a wall. In a heartbeat, Lyn’das was beside the figure, holding a blue lightsaber to his throat. “Quiet!” snarled the Twi’lek. Jef stared at the man in confusion. I’ve seen him—-no, this scene—-somewhere before. “Do I know you?” Jef asked.

The man just stared at him coolly. Sithspit, Jef-—this is no time for déjà vu’! Then it came to him-—at the battle for Geonosis, he and his master had looked up to see this man on a balcony, but with a purple lightsaber at his throat.

“You!” Jef yelped in surprise. “But-—you’re not.” Why didn’t I sense he was a clone?
“That’s right.” The man answered for the first time. “I’m Clone Trooper 14A20E of the Grand Army of the Republic, 501st regiment.”

Lyn’das stared at the Clone, recognition dawning. “What do you want, before I cut off your head?”

Trooper 14A20E sat, trusting Lyn’das to pull the saber back a bit. The Twi’lek did. Slowly, the Clone held out his hands to Jef in a clumsy but submissive way, as though such a gesture was totally foreign to him.

“Consider me captured.”

Fascinating how CT 14A20E couldn't kill Jef and how the Force spoke to Jed that the Clone's destiny was to continue hunt him. Wonder what the outcome will be? thinking

“Sithspawn, Lyn’das—-why do you want to hide with me? Everyone who helps me winds up dead!” Jef cried bitterly.

Understable that young Jef would have moments of angst. Poor guy. sad

Awesome chapter! grin grin

“Am I—-“

What will be his destiny? What purpose will he serve for the Force? thinking

Nice action scenes!

Good job Raptor. Your beta does quite a nice job btw!

Great chapter Rapter!

Action was good, I really liked the Force and Jef chatting during the fight - thats a touch that I really haven't seen, but really like.

I can feel Jefs pain as it does seem like everyone who is near him gets killed. Hopefully this will change soon.

great job on this Rapter,

Fascinating how CT 14A20E couldn't kill Jef and how the Force spoke to Jed that the Clone's destiny was to continue hunt him. Wonder what the outcome will be? thinking
Understable that young Jef would have moments of angst. Poor guy. sad
Awesome chapter! grin grin

The outcome? Hopefully not what you all would expect.

The darts are about four inches long, thrown by hand...No, Boba is not here. cry And his name....That revelation had a while to be revealed. But I am glad you're thinking about it.

I'm glad you liked Jef's conversations. As for changes, for the most part things will start looking up from here, though there will be one last heartbreaker for Jef. Something to look forward to? confused

Thanks to everyone for your responses and faithfulness to this fic!
