Title: Monsters
Rating: G
Characters: Leia
Summary: Leia deals with the past
Word count: 335
Definition of "Monsters" : c.1300, "malformed animal, creature afflicted with a birth defect," from O.Fr. monstre, from L. monstrum "monster, monstrosity, omen, portent, sign," from root of monere "warn" (see monitor). Abnormal or prodigious animals were regarded as signs or omens of impending evil. Extended c.1385 to imaginary animals composed of parts of creatures (centaur, griffin, etc.). Meaning "animal of vast size" is from 1530; sense of "person of inhuman cruelty or wickedness" is from 1556. In O.E., the monster Grendel was an aglæca, a word related to aglæc "calamity, terror, distress, oppression."
---------------
They said he was a monster. The greatest monster in the galaxy. His reputation for cruelty would be the stuff of legend in the years to come, his heroic deeds passed on in half forgotten whispers. In time, people would begin to doubt his existence as they doubted the existence of many other mythical creatures.
Leia walked towards the pile of ashes scattered on the Endor meadow. She had not accompanied Luke last night to watch the cremation. She couldn’t do it. Whatever quality it was that made her brother feel compassion for that monster, she didn’t possess it, and she hadn't wanted to pretend she even truly cared.
But now, in the morning light in the presense of no one, she found herself alone with the ashes of her father.
What had brought her here?? Morbid curiosity perhaps? An odd longing to say goodbye to links of her family's past?
She knelt before the ashes, running them through her fingers almost tenderly. They were so light, so soft to the touch. Nothing remained of her biological father's body, but a few pieces of his twisted and demented black armor that stuck boldly out of the ruins.
She picked up what might have once been Darth Vader's helmet, now melted into an unidentifiable shape.
“ Who were you really?” She asked, not expecting a reply.
“A monster, a tyrant, an enslaver of worlds…my torturer..”
She closed her eyes as the memories of present years resurfaced, “ My… father…” she choked out the words, then threw the metal far away from her, in a feeble attempt to distance herself from the man who gave her and her brother life.
“Why?” she shouted, her voice suddenly going hoarse.
Standing up she backed away and began to wipe her hot tears with the back of her dirty hands, “ I hate you!!!"
Yet, even after that, monsters continued to exist in the galaxy, in many shapes and forms. The most common of which lived inside the mind.

I love the last line. I also like the way you had Leia's words mirror what Anakin/Vader said to his "father" many years ago. I really don't blame her for feeling that way about him.
I also love this section from the first paragraph:
His reputation for cruelty would be the stuff of legend in the years to come, his heroic deeds passed on in half forgotten whispers. In time, people would begin to doubt his existence as they doubted the existence of many other mythical creatures.
That, and the definition of "monster" set the tone perfectly. Wonderful viggy!

Thanks!
I see a lot of Anakin’s personality traits in Leia. She’s quick to anger like him & does not forgive easily.

There's no doubt her vastly more intimate knowledge of Vader would color her thoughts and feelings and who can blame her.
She closed her eyes as the memories of present years resurfaced, “ My… father…” she choked out the words, then threw the metal far away from her, in a feeble attempt to distance herself from the man who gave her and her brother life.
Poor girl. That is a hell of a lot to overcome, to discover the being you despise the most is really your own father.

Yes, easy for Luke to say there’s still good in him - he only got his hand chopped off & that was in a duel.

Title: Ben-Oni
Characters: Anakin Shmi & OC’s
Rating: G
Summary: Life is short & brutal on Tatooine
Wordcount: 559
Anakin pressed his face against Rachel’s bulging abdomen, and the unborn baby kicked three times, making Anakin laugh a little.
“ I think he likes you,” the young slave woman said, smiling whole-
heartedly at the even-younger slave.
“How do you know it’s a boy?” Anakin asked, obviously confused and wondered at her growing stomach.
“ I don’t, but I hope it is.”
Anakin was going to ask why when both their mothers came out and began chatting to Rachel, asking her how she felt today.
Rachel’s mother, Tara, was not happy about the baby, but Anakin certainly was. He didn’t have any siblings and Rachel said she’d let him play with her baby anytime he wanted to.
That night, Anakin woke to agonizing screams of pain, sounding like they were floating into his room from the hut next door... it was Rachel.
In their own hovel they were forced to call a house, his mother was scurrying around collecting towels and utensils. He got out of bed, a little panicked by the present situation,
“ Mom, what’s happening?”
She glanced at him briefly, “ Anakin, go to bed.”
Another scream shattered the peaceful night's silence, jolting Anakin's young heart yet again, “ Is that Rachel? What’s going on?”
“ She’s having her baby.”
“ Is she going to be okay?”
“ I hope so.”
Without another word, Shmi left for next door, to help Tara with the baby's arrival. Not knowing what to do, Anakin climbed back into bed but not to sleep. Sleep was impossible with all sounds from next door.
Finally, he heard the sound of a newborn baby crying. The moans, however, did not cease for a long, long while. At first, they got louder then weaker and weaker.....
Silence.
Agonising silence.
Then the sound of Tara and his mother wailing made Anakin's eyes bloodshot from no sleep and worrying of the happenings next door to him.
His mother came home in the early hours of the morning. Her apron was covered in blood. She took it off and threw it in the wash basket, then sat down at the table her face in her hands, weeping.
Anakin climbed up beside her and put his arm around her.
“Mom, what’s happened?”
“ Rachel is dead.” She looked up from her hands and wiped the tears away.
“ She haemorrhaged…we called the medic but…”
“ And the baby?”
“She’s all right, Tara can take care of her.”
The knowledge that he would never see his friend again was unbearable. Cuddling into his mothers arms, he wept with her.
“ Why’d she have to die, mom? Why?”
“I don’t know, Ani.”
“It’s not fair.”
“ I know.”
The following day, Rachel was buried in the slave's cemetery, with her several friends and few family present.
Anakin held his mother's hand tight as he watched the sand swallow up his friend. The local wise woman chanted,
“ …Dust to dust, from the earth we came and to the earth we return…”
The Baby stirred in Tara’s arms, causing Anakin to look back up from his tears.
“ May I hold her?” he asked.
She gave the tiny baby to him, making sure he held it correctly. The baby opened her eyes and smiled at him. Despite his grief he smiled back.
“ What is her name?”
“ Rachel.”

Yup,That was part of my reason for writing it (also the challenge was "the circle of life").
I thought hey, medical care was probably shoddy on Tatooine which meant women had a greater chance on dying in childbirth.
This is the most depressing fic I've written so far.
Did you pick up where i got the title from?

Excellent last line for "Monsters". It's a short vignette but it says a lot with little words.

Title: “She Watches, She Waits"
Characters: Padme Anakin
Rating: G
Summary: Padme likes looking out of windows
Wordcount: 325
She looks out her window to the east.
She does this every morning before breakfast, and every afternoon.
It is her meditation, her prayer. Sometimes her mind is blank, sometimes it is full of many things. Mostly, it is full of endless worries for him.
Part of her mind tells her not to worry. It reminds her that he has Obi-Wan and Commander Cody at his side, that they will keep him safe for her. He could not ask for more loyal or skilled comrades in battle.
But the other part of her mind is terrified she will be woken up one morning and be informed of his death... That the report Dorme hands her will say he was killed in some useless battle over a planet she had never even heard of before. This is her greatest fear, that she will lose him on some cold world and it eats away at her bit by bit, slowly and secretly.
One morning soon from now, she will be standing there, binoculars in hand, and she’ll spy his fighter landing at the Jedi Temple, closely followed by Obi-Wan's ever-watching eye.
She’ll want nothing more than to run to him, to throw her arms around him and never let go.
She cannot.
She cannot even visit him at his home, and he, still a 'mere' Padawan, cannot visit her without his master's knowledge.
He will send her an encoded message to meet him in some seedy underworld motel.
Always a different place to avoid familiarity with the locals.
She will go to him under the cover of the night, disguised as a handmaiden, and leave his safe arms before dawn can arise.
He may stay on planet for a couple of days or weeks, or he may be taken from her in a few short hours. The war does not wait for them, does not care that it takes her beloved away from her too soon. It does not inform her if she will ever see him alive again.
So she stands by her window, looking out to the east.... She watches, she waits.

It looks like I'm perpetually one step behind.
I just read Ben-Obi. What a sad story. I love Anakin's fascination with Rachel's baby (who turned out not to be a boy *sniff*) and the idea that it could have caused his fears for Padme. It makes a lot of sense because for a child growing up on Tatooine, pregnancy *can* and *does* kill expectant mothers.
So, I'm curious - what's the meaning of the title?

It comes from Genesis
16 And they journeyed from Bethel; and there was but a little way to come to Ephrath: and
Rachel
travailed, and she had hard labour.
17 And it came to pass, when she was in hard labour, that the midwife said unto her, Fear not; thou shalt have this son also.
18 And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name
Ben-oni
( which means son of my pain) : but his father called him Benjamin.
19 And
Rachel
died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem.
20 And Jacob set a pillar upon her grave: that is the pillar of
Rachel's
grave unto this day.
I choose Rachel as the womans name & Ben-Oni as the title because i thought they were fitting for the story.

Title: Hero
Characters: Luke
Rating: G
Summary: A sequel to “Monsters.” Luke thinks about his dad.
Word count: 339
"Good can exist without evil, whereas evil cannot exist without good".... Saint Thomas Aquinas
Luke slowly walked into the meadow where his late fathers ashes and remains lay. Earlier that day, he had spied his twin sister solemnly visit the pyre. He'd seen her leave abruptly in tears, her oval face red with anger. He had seen the helmet lying on the grass where she had thrown it forcefully.
Soberly he picked it up and returned it to the pile.
He had always known it would be a long time before his sister could forgive their father. She had suffered more at his hand than he had. She had been a victim of torture so horrible, that even now, he had heard it give her nightmares. She had watched her home planet perish, held back only by the hand of their dark father.
He had lost a limb himself by his father, but that had been in a duel.... an unbalanced but honourable fight between men. He slowly flexed his cybernetic hand, so like, yet so unlike his fathers.
Thinking about how close he himself had come to the darkness. Rage had coursed through his veins. He had felt the dark side of power, and it had felt so good.
He wondered if that was why his father had turned.
The galaxy would probably never know the details of Jedi Skywalkers transformation into a Sith Lord. Did he really care?
He had saved his father.
It was all he had thought about before their confrontation. Refusing to believe that his own father was irredeemable.
Now alone in the meadow, with nothing but ashes for company, he felt intense sadness for what might have been.
All his life he’d longed to know his father. He’d imagined him as a pilot at first, then a noble Jedi Knight. A hero fighting for truth and justice.
Having those delusions stripped from him in four simple words had been more painful than his physical injuries.
Luke grimaced, remembering the naive farm boy he once was.
“ But I was half right. You were a hero… in the end.”
