Poof has a love-hate relationship with the Saga. On the one hand, it’s where he has his shinning moments as a Jedi Knight on the Jedi Council. On the other hand, he dies during the Saga era, and that wasn’t much fun at all.

Here I am, playing catch-up as usual. tongue . I must say, it is very nice to have Leia show some vulnerability, even though the audience knows she's been through a lot. How will Echo base take to the new H/L?

An update! Sweet! This was just what I needed to break up my studying for finals madness.

"We have too much to worry about to keep paying attention to what any of us are feeling about the matter," she insisted. "If you can find a way to break the news to my brother, I'll be forever grateful."

So is Luke only in the dark about Rieekan? or is it more then that?

Thanks for another awesome post! Good Luck on finals!

Note: Many thanks to Spiritofeowyn, my beta who sat through two evenings of me grinding this out and got it into a coherent form. She didn't even yell at me once, though I'm sure I probably deserved it at some point. happy
*****
dm1--Yup, that was most certainly me. Since one of the strange and occasionally marvelous things I've done on my own initiative has been to translate all the Pink 5 films into Spanish, I made a Spanish username. happy Sorry about the PM notification. I'll do better this time around. All three have to act as if nothing has changed, when just about everything has changed. Rieekan should discipline her for her actions against him, but it's Rieekan and his reasons for not doing so are vague now, but less so later. He does understand her motivation. Glad you like Han as the comic relief in this post. He is definitely the only one who would call her beautiful bait.

AnakinsFavorite--Possibly because some of the PMs got sidetracked by technical issues and my brain doesn't work at all at other times. Yeah, that was cheesy of him, but it was cute anyway, right? And yes, the angsty vibes are about to start making trouble fairly soon.

Jaded_Rose--Hi, jaded. Glad you like Leia's vulnerability, though I'm trying to not have it become a focal point. It's going to have an interesting turn not too much later in the story. Good question about the new H/L dynamic.

Novahawk9--:-D Glad it was a welcome reprieve. LUke knows what's going on with Rieekan, but there's a whole other level of complication in there. Thanks!

Laine_Snowtrekker--Thanks! Sorry for the long delay!

Luke slept uneasily as he always did in a new environment. It wasn’t that he was unaccustomed to Wedge’s snores and Hobbie’s tendency to talk in his sleep. It wasn’t that the bunk was unusually uncomfortable.

It was the state of his mind that was bothering him most. He felt like an intruder here and that was something he had never expected.

As a result, when Wedge nudged him awake at 0700, he was barely able to pry his eyes open. Instead of making a coherent response, he simply made a noise that sounded something like “Snhrughrewargh.”

“Message from High Command,” Wedge whispered, passing over his datacard.

“Do I have to reply,” Luke mumbled to his pillow, “or will showing up be enough?”

“I didn’t eavesdrop,” Wedge protested, “but given the time it came in, I think showing up will suffice.”

Luke blinked the sleep out of his eyes, then thumbed on the datapad and turned his head to read the text on the screen.

Your presence is required at a debriefing of your current assignment. Transport will be provided at 0900...

“Blast,” he grunted.

Apparently, the dressing-down Rieekan had given them last night wasn’t enough. They were going to let the professionals take a crack at it.

“Bad news?” Wedge asked from the bottom bunk as Luke dropped from his bed to the floor.

“Bad enough,” Luke grumbled, reaching for his towel. “I shouldn’t be gone long, but they want another debriefing, this time with High Command.”

Wedge smiled in sympathy. “Sounds like the brass,” he agreed. “They can never get enough torture.”

“Well,” Luke sighed, “I guess getting this round out of the way can’t really hurt.”

“And it’s not as if we have anything exciting planned for the day,” Wedge said wryly.

“Really,” Luke grinned. “I thought this place was a hotbed of excitement and disobedience. It’s half of the reason that I asked for this assignment.”

Wedge waved a dismissive hand. “That’s what we put on the recruitment posters,” he conceded, “but everyone knows you’re allowed to lie on those things.”

Luke hid his grin with the closet door as he rummaged for a clean uniform shirt. “I thought so,” he said. “So, what do you have planned for my squadron?”

In the old days, Wedge would have been in the mood for more banter, even this early. He would have made some claim about Luke’s authority for calling Rogue Squadron his. Between diplomatic missions, negotiations and special assignments for the higher-ups, there were some weeks when Luke wasn’t even in the same sector as ‘his squadron.’

There had, however, developed a certain kind of strained curiosity in the time since he’d left. Luke hadn’t been certain of why, but he suspected that it had something to do with three of the most well-known Alliance members disappearing from existence just after Derra IV. There had been plenty of desertions and no one wanted to think about the possibility of the heroes having questionable loyalty.

It was the only reason Luke could think of for why Wedge seemed to have changed in the mere weeks since he’d seen him last. It was as good a reason as any, so Luke didn’t comment on it. He’d just have to work to improve the situation.

The moment he closed his closet door, Wedge finally responded. “Patrol, more patrol, possibly even some wampa-hunting and another day of trying to get the speeders to work the way they’re supposed to.”

“I’d take that over having to explain myself over and over again to Mon Mothma,” Luke shot back, trying to lighten the mood.

“Can’t argue with that,” Wedge agreed shortly as he turned his back to Luke. “Clear skies.”

Luke wanted to say something more than the traditional response, but there was nothing to be done at 0700 other than hope they’d meet on better terms.

“Clear skies.”

The showers were unoccupied as usual this early, but Luke didn’t take advantage of the hour to stay under the hot water. The moment he was scrubbed down, he dressed quickly and placed a call to Leia while he was combing his hair.

She retrieved the call almost immediately, her voice somehow alert and energetic in a way that made Luke exhausted just hearing her.

“You’ve been invited to the briefing, too,” he guessed.

“Of course,” Leia said. “It would be a waste of fuel to yell at us individually.”

He rolled his eyes. “Did they give you any details on where the transport will be provided?”

“Of course,” Leia scoffed. “They sent the same message to Han about the debriefing, but they told him he was the transport.”

“Good,” Luke muttered. “He’ll be in a bad enough mood without having to be a backseat pilot to someone else.”

He could hear her stifle a laugh and immediately, his day improved. She had been given too few reasons to be happy since they left Alderaan and he had been trying to make her smile more often. The trick seemed to be getting in before she put up her guard.

“You’re on the way to the hangar,” Luke reminded her. “Would you like an escort?”

“I’d love one,” she admitted, “but I’d like to have breakfast with my brother first. Do you think you could arrange that?”

Now, it was his turn to smile. “Absolutely.”
*****
They spent the six-hour flight to the rendezvous point as if they were heading off to an absolutely normal mission. The assignment was mentioned once, the usual abuse of the authorities took place and the other five hours and forty-five minutes were spent either swapping stories or playing sabacc over lunch. It was at least good to get out of the icy atmosphere of Hoth, even though Han and Chewie had competed for volume in complaining about leaving the big fuzzball behind again.

The moment they came in sight of the Deliberator, however, all good spirits fled. Luke was in the navigator’s chair as usual, but his posture suggested that he had an enemy ship in his sights. Han was scowling, but Leia couldn’t tell exactly why. After all, he would soon have the perfect opportunity to yell at some pretentious politicians and that usually put him in a good mood if nothing else did.

Perhaps they were both anticipating the fact that no matter what, the High Command usually got their way and also made anyone who disagreed feel guilty for doing so. Leia had resolved to avoid that situation, but she knew too well that it would be a hard-fought battle.

“Look at it this way,” she soothed. “The worst they can do is tell us we’re wrong.”

“And order us to proceed with the original plan,” Luke added.

“Fine,” Leia said shortly. “The original plan never said that we were supposed to kill him.”

“She’s right,” Han conceded. “It just said to eliminate him by any means necessary.”

“Which is what we intend to do,” Leia reminded.

Luke was silent for a long moment, then nodded almost imperceptibly. “What if they pull us off the assignment completely?”

That was one question for which she did not have an easy or ready answer. It was certainly something that was a valid concern, but given Rieekan’s attitude last night, it was improbable. Rieekan had not been happy about their determination to proceed, but he had not suggested any alternatives. On the other hand, he could have simply been holding those in reserve for the time when his colleagues on the High Command could back him up.

“We’ll worry about that latter,” Han interjected before she could formulate an adequate response. “Let’s just get through this first.”

“Fair enough,” Luke agreed.

A flashing light on the comm unit indicated that they were being hailed and Han swatted the connection switch. “Millennium Falcon here,” he reported in. “Who’s on duty over there?”

“Varsch as usual,” the familiar voice of another Corellian came through. “I was wondering when you’d show up.”

“Really,” Han laughed.

“Yeah,” Varsch responded. “You still owe me fifty credits from that one sabacc game.”

It was good that someone on that ship was glad to see them, at least for fairly normal reasons.

“We’ll settle that later,” Han said genially. “In the meanwhile, the brass want to see us. Where can we park?”

“I’m sending over the vector right now,” Varsch assured him. “Deliberator out.”

A few minutes later, they landed in one of the auxiliary bays of the Deliberator and Han took his time shutting down the ship as if he were stalling. The other two waited, just as enthusiastic as he to leave the ship.

Their reception committee was, predictably enough, Rieekan. He didn’t look particularly happy with this assignment, which was perfectly understandable given the bruise that Leia had inflicted on him the night before.

“Thank you for coming,” he said formally. “The High Command has some questions of their own.”

“We figured as much,” Han said flatly.

Rieekan’s gaze shifted to Leia and she knew that if he had possessed any sensitivity to the Force, he would have done a mind-probe on her. Instead, he gave her an evaluative look and then glanced quickly away.

“If you’ll come with me...”

Leia fell into step with him without further invitation, but all of them remained silent. Luke and Han for once seemed to be following her lead and she wasn’t particularly interested in bringing up the subject of last night.

It was a short distance to the conference room that Leia had visited often and Rieekan entered without having to announce himself to the guards who stood as sentries outside the door.

The first thing that drew her attention was Mon Mothma. The woman who had been Bail’s oldest friend in the Alliance and who had always seemed to possess a preternatural energy looked worn. It made her pause for a moment as she registered any other changes in the familiar faces. There seemed to be none, so she took the seat that was offered to her and kept her hands folded on the table in front of her. Han and Luke took the seats on either side of her and while Han fidgeted for a moment, neither of them spoke out of turn.

“It is good to see that you returned safely,” Mon Mothma said carefully.

“Thank you,” Leia said immediately.

“Thanks,” Luke replied.

“It was a rough trip,” Han added, always willing to make things difficult.

Mon Mothma glanced at Rieekan, who had finally taken his seat at the conference table. “So we heard,” she said simply.

Nothing further seemed to be forthcoming. It was as if each side were waiting for the other to make the first move.

“We supplied General Rieekan with the details of the mission,” Leia said helpfully.

“Yes,” Mon Mothma said patiently. “That is what concerns us.”

“What do you mean?” Luke spoke up. “We operated according to the mission parameters...”

“Do you really believe that?” Crix Madine challenged.

“Yes,” they chorused.

It was the first time that all three of them had responded and Leia was heartened by the fact that for once, they seemed to agree on the same thing.

There was a vaguely uncomfortable silence in which each member of the High Command waited for the others to be the bad guys. Rieekan was the only one who seemed to decide exactly where the blame lay. He was looking rather pointedly at Mon Mothma, as if to say that he had accepted all of the blame that could credibly be called his and was not about to accept any of hers as well. She was just as pointedly ignoring him, instead looking at the three offenders with a shrewd expression.

“The mission parameters were to eliminate Vader,” she enumerated in an unforgiving tone. “By your own admission, you failed to complete that mission.”

“That is correct,” Luke conceded, “but you’ve got it wrong from the start.”

Mon Mothma was looking neither patient nor amused by their dissension. “I beg your pardon?” she asked.

“We did not fail,” Leia added. “We refused to eliminate him by one means.”

“Murder,” Han clarified. “We’ve kinda got a thing against it in the first place. The target’s kids weren’t too happy about it, either.”

“And you are incorrect,” Leia said, “in claiming that the mission should be considered to be complete.”

“Yet you returned to the Alliance,” Mon Mothma reminded, “as you were instructed to do after the completion of the mission.”

“We returned to regroup,” Leia asserted. “We had done all that we could in the timeframe given to us.”

“And you think that was enough?” Madine challenged. “I had thought more highly of you three.”

“We returned,” Leia continued as if she had not heard him, “because we have redesigned the mission parameters in our own time.”

“And you think that you will be permitted to continue here?” Mon Mothma observed.

None of them responded, since, frankly, it hadn’t occurred to them that they would not be. Leia’s mental process ground to a halt, she had to regroup her arguments to fit that possibility.

“There is no reason that we wouldn’t,” she claimed.

“You failed,” Madine insisted. “Moreover, you refused to obey orders. Under the right circumstances, that could be a war crime.”

“So could what you sent us to do,” Luke snapped.

“By many standards, all warfare would be a crime,” Mon Mothma granted. “What we are disputing is your right to proceed with a mission that you have already refused. Certainly, there are many other soldiers in the Alliance who would be more than happy to eliminate the Emperor’s lieutenant.”

“That’s true,” Leia agreed, “but we have one perfectly good reason for completing our mission.”

“What is that?” Rieekan interjected.

For the first time since her return, she turned to look at him with not a single shred of anger. Instead, she had nothing but resolve and truth to offer him.

“If you allow us to continue, we can promise that Darth Vader will be eliminated in one way or another,” she explained. “If you require that of someone else, we cannot promise that we won’t stop it.”

Yay! So glad to see this update. dancing

In the old days, Wedge would have been in the mood for more banter, even this early.
sad Poor Luke. Everything's off kilter since they got back. I'm getting a real strong feeling here among "the three" that it's them against the universe. I hope they will somehow be able to find some support for their cause.

War Crimes? Good heavens. They weren't able, they had to get the heck out of town and someone is stupid enough to mumble something about war crimes?

ugggh ..

There had, however, developed a certain kind of strained curiosity in the time since he’d left. There had been plenty of desertions and no one wanted to think about the possibility of the heroes having questionable loyalty.

Oh, that’s a wicked thought and one I didn’t consider. mischief It must have seemed weird from the other’s point of view- if only they knew the truth (but then again, that might not work out so well…) doh!

“You’ve been invited to the briefing, too,” he guessed.

“Of course,” Leia said. “It would be a waste of fuel to yell at us individually.”

I actually laughed aloud at that- too funny but probably too true at the same time! laugh

“Of course,” Leia scoffed. “They sent the same message to Han about the debriefing, but they told him he was the transport.”

“Good,” Luke muttered. “He’ll be in a bad enough mood without having to be a backseat pilot to someone else.”

Ouchies! I am loving this banter… which means more angst is coming, right???! wink

After all, he would soon have the perfect opportunity to yell at some pretentious politicians and that usually put him in a good mood if nothing else did.

Hee! That’s good old Han for you! I love how you’ve developed his character- so on key! applause

Oh, to have them be told to leave the assignment… why do I fear that this is the path this story is going to take? Oh yeah… because there would be all sorts of complications us writers love!

“If you allow us to continue, we can promise that Darth Vader will be eliminated in one way or another,” she explained. “If you require that of someone else, we cannot promise that we won’t stop it.”

I think that these last few lines reinforce why you’re one of my favorite writers! Please hurry up and finish the next post already- I can’t wait to see the High Command’s reactions! grin

Golden_Jedi--Thanks, Golden. And the High COmmand knows, remember? That's the whole issue she has with them.

Laine_Snowtrekker--LOL, I'm creating a group of merry anarchists. Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! They are the heroes and they should be listened to. Maybe SOMEONE will listen to them, but not yet. Leia's being Very Skywalker here.

PonyTricks--LOL, of course it will.

RebelMom--:) It's a very difficult time. The High Command expects all orders to be followed without question and just because they're against evil doesn't mean they won't have periodic evil intentions.

Blue_Milkshake--Thanks, Blue! Well, no one has actually any idea what went on and Luke's definitely not himself right now. It's definitely "the three" against everyone, even their friends. They'll find support, but you're going to be shocked. Glad you like that part with Han. LOL, that is an ultimatum.

obsessedwithSW--Well, in alternative to Leia punching Rieekan, we've got you punching Mon Mothma. It definitely was too much to ask. Vader is lieutenant in the sense of second-in-command. Thanks!

Jade_eyes--Glad you liked this. I love tweaking the whole emotional dynamic.

Noelie--Well, they won without me as their writer. happy Well, war crimes threats are more inspirational. Thanks.

AnakinsFavorite--One of the best fics I ever read involved Luke and Wedge arguing about that whole thing with Luke disappearing. I also believe that there would have been desertions by the weaker parties. Glad that made you laugh at loud. Much angst... I'm happy that you like Han's characterization. And it would kill them to leave that assignment after they've risked so much. The story will take my path, which may be more dangerous. Awwww, thank you! I'll try and write more soon!
