"Good," he said. "I won't be far behind you."
She pulled back and kissed his cheek before heading down the ladder. Luke raised a hand to wave farewell and closed the hatch just as Dack made his only protest.
"Hey! Where's my kiss?"
Hee!
I'm loving this story! You write all the characters so well!
Wonderful update!!

"No," she replied. "I just don't want it to end this way."
There was a chance, however unlikely, that they might come out of this alive.
"All right," Han sighed. "What's your plan?"
Does she even have one?
Always nice to see this story up!

Since when is Han interested in plans?!? I'm also wondering what Leia is thinking, especially since the lightsaber hadn't occurred to her.
Anyway, not good, caught so soon.
Nice to see you updating this!

This is great! I wonder what Leia's plan is. Also I forgot if Luke, Leia, and Han were going to try to redeem Vader.
I love when Dack said what he said about not getting a kiss. Does he know Luke and Leia are related or does he think they're sweethearts? :-)
Well, keep up the great work! I can't wait for the rest of this!

RE: To Gather Stones Together--Sequel to To Cast Away Stones--Updated 6/7
Author's note: I am absolutely mortified! I went back because I knew I'd missed a few author replies and had no idea I'd missed so many. You guys are awesome for still reading in spite of that and I have now replied to everything! Also, thank you for the nom for Best Interpretation of a Canon Character, Female for Leia! I hope I do whoever suggested that proud.
And lastly, a post will be coming very soon.
*****
Chewie-Fan--Sure and end up in the brig...
cibbler--Wonderful! Thanks for adding it to the "wow list." It's one of my favorite stories that I've ever written. LOL, yes, PONR has some classic cliffs... I'm glad this left you wanting to read more. Poor Rieekan indeed. I'd love to have his inner monologue during this whole thing. I'd call it more courtesy of himself. I hope you stay hooked on this.
dm1--Thanks. I like that line myself.
The High Command may see their point or it is possible that they will just understand that it's more dangerous to bring someone else in on the mission. Yeah, it's very complicated. Thanks!
Araxie--LOL, glad you liked those lines. It's very Han to me. Thanks.
RK_Striker_JK_5--Because you don't ask for update PMs...and I'm not that reliable with those anyway.
Nice use of the word lollygagging. Luke and Wedge are so much fun to write. Leia has some reasons to be pissed. And I wouldn't go as far as having them shot, just for morale purposes. Thanks, as usual.
jasa--It's not just you.
DountCooku--Thanks for enjoying both.
Novahawk9--Down!
owphoenix--W00T!
kateydidnt--LOL, you're one to talk. How long has it been since you updated Alde? Oh, well, two and a half months, but before that it was two years!
Glad you 'deal' with the evilness of my writing. I'd like to see you try, especially since I no longer spend any time on the futon. You should beta this anyway. And I answered the other question in another author reply... Do you ever make sense?
Novahawk9--...Down. Glad you like the group dynamic. I've worked very hard to avoid keeping them in strictly conventional/stereotypical roles. Glad the dialogue works. Thanks.
Jade_eyes--HI!!! You're welcome. Glad they were terrific, as always. Thanks. I hope it keeps you interested.
cibbler--I'm glad it's great. Leia/Rieekan have a very different dynamic in this one, which is one of my challenges because I really write them as almost-family in almost every other story. Yes, Ben told Luke to bring Leia, which is very different. This is also omniscient!Ben.
Glad you liked H/L and Luke's comment. I aim to have some humor at times. Thanks!
RebelMom--Thanks. I appreciate your support and am glad that you like how I show the characters.
PonyTricks--Yup, I can imagine. And I'm trying to be more regular! Having LYBJ over with helps.
dancing_star--Yay! You liked it! Thanks. LOL, I liked that thought. I'm glad you're still liking this. Thanks again!
RK_Striker_JK_5--LOL, you're the only one who cares, of course. It's true.
Glad you liked the consequences. Yes, she's getting off lightly, but Luke never really caught flak for practically deserting to go train as a Jedi in the OT. Glad you liked those convos.
AnakinsFavorite--Yay, thanks.
Glad you finally got a chance to read it and now you need to catch up again. LOL, glad I twisted the story to fit the timeline and vice versa. Glad that convo was stunning. I also want to blame him for lying to her, but yeah, there wasn't a good way of presenting the alternative. Thanks again.
Juliet316--Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww....thanks.
Jade_eyes--LOL, I like making my readers SQUEE and *melt*.
Glad it was 'delicious.' Unfortunately, between the day that was posted and the day I got around to replying, the wedding has been called off. That's a long story and it's hers. Yes, she's got inspired mush.
PonyTricks--I'll take that as a good sign and say thanks!
Golden_Jedi--Some classic responses never go stale. Glad it made you happy. Thanks!
RebelMom--Especially because it's rare.
DountCooku--Very big relief that she kissed the right guy. Thanks!
AnakinsFavorite--LOL, you like romance, don't you? Han's one of those guys who just stays in-character pretty much everywhere because trouble's no big deal for him. LOL, glad you liked that interchange. Thanks!
Laine_Snowtrekker--Thanks!
RK_Striker_JK_5--I hope you didn't squee. You don't have the voice for it.
Glad it was cute and just adorable.
I had fun with that scene. The guy talk was also fun to write. Thanks!
owphoenix--Thanks and thanks.
Glad you liked that.
Blue_Milkshake--LOL, glad you approve. He's definitely a nerf-herder, the big lug.
DanaeMariSkywalker--Thanks! I'm glad you like both of them and I take great care with my characterizations, so am grateful that you approve of them. H/L is always fun to write. You'll definitely get the chance to see that. Thanks!
ccp--Thanks! Hope it continues that way.
RebelMom--*blush* I know. I'm so bad! And I'll be better, I promise.
Golden_Jedi--LOL, glad you approve of that. You're welcome. In a manner of speaking...
dm1--This won't be one of them. The plot itself is too delicious to ditch.
star_writer24--Yay! Thanks! Awww, really? Leia is a very complex chick and I have fun with that. Thanks for your kindness.
dancing_star--LOL, aawwwwwwwww thanks. I don't mind lurking as long as it ends on occasion. Glad you're thoroughly enjoying it. Thanks!
RebelMom--That's one of the things I like tweaking most in AUs. Because I think that they were dorks at times. Thanks!
Jade_eyes--Thanks. Wriggle? I'm glad you loved it. I think that the plot of TCAS brought them together in a way that was tantamount to the events of ESB. Try not to melt too severely.
dm1--Well, I'm glad you caught up. I'm so glad you're so glad I'm continuing htis.
I'm glad the mix is fascinating rather than exasperating.
Though that kiss was one of the funnier awkwardness things of all time.
I like added H/L kisses. Thanks and I'll try.
cibbler--Those two may eventually be finished. I don't know yet. Glad this is one of your fav.
Thanks for the 'excellent'.
Lanta--Congrats on marathon reading! Thanks for enjoying them that much. I'm glad it was an interesting slant. I've only seen one done well.
ccp--Thanks!
Golden_Jedi--Thanks, Goldie. I'll keep that in mind.
RebelMom--She'll try. I promise. Whether she succeeds or not... Thanks.
ccp--Thank you!
dm1--Sorry. I stink.
Yes, just a bit dangerous. Then again, same thing with Luke. Not red. Yellow.
Ocelotl_Nesto--I'll be better at PMs and author replies.
Blue_Milkshake--Well, unless it's on an enemy.
Thanks! Glad you like my own special twist.
dancing_star--LOL, I loved giving that little quirk to Dack. It was so cute, I think. Thanks! Glad you like the characters!
Golden_Jedi--Leia? She's the planmeister! Sorta... Thanks!
dm1--LOL, only when it's his butt on the line. And he wants her alive to kiss him. She's thinking something that will be very interesting once it unfolds. But you'll see... And yes, not good to be caught at all. Thanks!
ccp--Thanks!
RebelMom--LOL, yeah, it's one of those *shock* things. Han needs to just...I don't know. Get some common sense? And he sold his parts to pay for the docking bay 23 years before, remember?
Laine_Snowtrekker--Thanks. I'm sure we all do.
DanaeMariSkywalker--Thanks, Danae! They are trying to redeem him and that's where the plan gets interesting. I'm glad you loved that Dack line. No, he doesn't. He just thinks there's an interesting love polygon going on. Thanks! Me, too!

Thanks for the PM!
It was not a comforting thing that the Falcon smelled strongly of smoke right now. It meant that there had been repairs done too recently for her tastes, but then again, there was no guarantee that the repair efforts had been successful. At least nothing seemed to be currently on fire.
And now they're trapped in a tractor beam?!?!?!?

I wouldn't necessarily say that. It might just mean that Bespin goes very differently...

Blue_Milkshake--You're welcome.
LOL, yeah, that's the best they can hope for with the
Falcon.
Yup, trapped in a tractor beam. What will happen next?!
Ocelotl_Nesto--Yeah, that would have been nice. Glad it's interesting, though. And you'll see.
RK_Striker_JK_5--Thanks.
I haven't done real action in a long time. Yes, very uh, oh! Glad you loved Dak.
PadawanMom5610--Thanks, PM! I'm glad you like both of them.
*****
Leia had first stood before Darth Vader as a precocious thirteen-year-old who had been ordered to welcome the dark lord to the royal court. She had shown more courtesy to the man in the obsidian mask than she felt that he deserved, but had subsequently spoken out of turn during the conference that Vader was attending.
They had infrequent run-ins until the time that she entered the Imperial Senate. Most of them demonstrated her contempt for his heavy-handed interpretation of justice. The few that did not inspire those feelings of disgust prompted her to think that he just might be capable of humanity.
Any thoughts to that effect had been expunged by her experiences on the Death Star. She had been left physically broken after repeated interrogations at his hands or by his command. She had been restrained during the destruction of her homeworld by his firm grip. She had been returned to her cell after watching Alderaan die and had finally recognized that no man could have allowed such things to happen.
On her last mission, she had seen far too much of his humanity for her tastes. She had been both infuriated and moved by the circumstances which had brought him to this life. In the beginning, she had believed in the possibility of his redemption for Luke's sake, but today, the need for that belief was more present than ever before.
It was not the first time in three years that she would stand before him, but it was the first time that she would stand before the man whom she recognized as her biological father in one form or another. Still, her hands trembled as she prepared for arrival.
The lightsaber that Luke had insisted on giving her as a defense rather than a burden was a liability. She could not afford to be without it—if nothing else, it was another weapon that she might be able to use against Vader—but she would take a great risk by letting him see it. It was a capital crime to associate with the Jedi Order or practice its philosophies and even if her death sentence were not still on record, she could be shot on sight for just carrying the weapon.
“I still think you'd do better if you went in there with that thing ignited,” Han pointed out.
“It may work for a Corellian to go in with blasters blazing,” Leia agreed, “but given our current intentions, I think that would be counterproductive.”
“Well, at least you could leave it in plain sight,” he suggested.
“Your suggestion is duly noted,” she said formally.
She had hooked the lightsaber to one of the bands holding her hair in place in a high nerf-tail and then braided the rest of her thick hair around the hilt. It was not unusual for her to wear an elaborate hairstyle as a representative of Alderaan and she was typically formal with Vader. No one would think to search for weapons
there
and, with any luck, she would be able to keep it with her until a more suitable hiding place could be found.
“You're nervous,” Han guessed when she had not spoken in nearly a minute.
“Of course,” Leia said quietly “Daughter or not, I have no idea what he will do to either one of us.”
“He won't do anything to you,” Han replied vehemently. “Not if I have anything to say about it.”
That was wishful thinking. In her experience, Vader did not make a habit of leaving anyone alive to complain about her treatment. Her hand found his so that she could thank him for the sentiment.
“Kiss for luck?” he offered.
She turned to him, intending to make some cavalier remark about sentimental gestures, but she instead found herself tilting her chin upwards until her lips met his. It was not a short, hard kiss, but one that lingered longer than necessary in acknowledgment of the possibility that they might be able to do it again for some time.
“I hope you know what you're doing,” Han muttered.
It was unusual for him to be complaining about the lack of a plan, but there was a first time for everything. She had a plan, but nothing that extended beyond a handful of steps. It was the first time in her life that she would have to consciously rely on the Force powers that she had only recently discovered.
“Me, too,” she said in kind.
Her stomach lurched in sync with the jolt that signaled they had touched down. Chewie lumbered out of the cargo hold where he'd been “improving” the security systems and they stood in silence until the landing ramp lowered.
“Any idea what your first words will be?” Han murmured.
“I was thinking something along the lines of 'Padme never told you what happened to your daughter,'” she said with a tense kind of amusement in her voice.
“It's definitely a conversation starter,” he agreed. “How about 'Hello, Dad, might I interest you in some family therapy?'”
“No,” Leia replied quickly. “I don't want to know how many interrogation droids he thinks are necessary for family therapy.”
“Good point.”
Her hand found his and she held on until they reached the bottom of the ramp. True to form, a nine-man squad of stormtroopers stood between them and Vader. The Dark Lord stood waiting, his posture as typically threatening as usual.
The good news was that the stormtroopers did not fire on sight. Instead, after waiting an acceptable amount of time to make sure that the prisoners weren't going to go down fighting, they took up formation around them and herded them across the bay in Vader's wake.
It was not until they left the bay that a stormtrooper slipped between her and Han and attempted to split the group into more manageable parts. Chewie growled his opinion of
that
and two more stormtroopers stepped in. If she did not act quickly, there would be dismembered stormtroopers and a stunned or dead Wookiee on their hands in less than a minute. Han was already attempting to push his way back to her side.
“I'll tell you what you need to know about your son,” Leia called, “but they will stay with me.”
Vader halted in his tracks and turned his mask towards her. In her mind's eye, she could imagine the almost crazed look of suspicious skepticism that Anakin Skywalker would have worn, but at least she had gotten his attention.
“You are not in a position to negotiate, Your Highness,” he growled.
“I am in a position to save you unnecessary hours of interrogation,” Leia shot back. “If you prefer to do this the hard way, the information you seek can die with all of us.”
Han and Chewie would know that she was bluffing. This was even a variation on one of Han's favorite tactics. Vader had demonstrated in the years since Yavin that his need to find Luke superseded many of his other priorities and she had counted on that to save them until they could formulate a more concrete plan.
Vader's hand clenched slightly and her throat constricted either under the pressure of the Force grip or in nervousness.
“That is a tempting offer,” he said quietly.
It was not difficult to remain calm. Vader had tried this tactic before and found that when it came to him, she had no fear of death. In a few moments, he would tire of the game and release her. She could see t hat Han had stopped struggling and was waiting for some kind of signal.
It should have taken only a few moments for Vader to release her, but instead, the moments stretched on until she could no longer how many heartbeats it had been since she had breathed. Worse, his grip tightened and her throat muscles worked instinctively against the invisible hand. She shot Han a warning look, but he seemed to ignore it. He was far too busy trying to start a fistfight with their escort. Instead of fighting, she forced herself to remain passive and closed her eyes.
Abruptly, the grip loosened and she inhaled sharply, her hands balled into fists. She let her eyes open and instead of trying to signal Han or assess the situation, she stared into the eyeshields of the Dark Lord and waited.
When she had contemplated the mission ahead of them, she had often thought of how difficult it would be to learn how to love Vader. She had not anticipated that more difficult still would be the effort of forgetting how to hate him. At this moment, both seemed to be impossible goals.
“Take them all to block AE-14,” he instructed.
And just when she thought she had achieved the first minor victory of the mission, the flash of a stun bolt enveloped her. Every muscle spasmed and she was unconscious before she even hit the floor.
*****
Luke was halfway up the ladder when the wave of dizziness hit. It was so overpowering that his foot missed the next rung and he slumped against his ship, struggling for breath. Instinctively, he reached out for Leia and found that, while he could find her in the Force, he could get no response from her. Whatever had overpowered both of them, she was not in immediate danger. At least, so far as he could tell.
“Commander,” one of the technicians called from the base of the ladder. “You fit to fly? We've still got room on one of the transports.”
“I'm fine,” he lied weakly, hauling himself the rest of the way up the ladder. “Can someone get a hold of whoever's flying escort for the
Falcon
?”
“I'll see what I can do and give you a comm once you're outbound,” the tech offered.
“Thanks,” Luke called back.
His hands shook slightly as he strapped himself in. Artoo whistled solicitously from behind him and he turned halfway to give his droid a weak grin.
“I'm fine,” he insisted. “I just had some trouble getting up my own ladder. We ready to go?”
Artoo blatted and it translated to something along the lines of “I was ready ten
minutes
ago. What took you so long?”
“Fine, fine,” he chuckled, powering up the engines. “We're going. We're going.”
The transport lifted off just ahead of them and Wedge and Luke throttled forward to take up escort positions.
“
Swift Liberty
group, you are cleared for departure in five, four, three...”
Luke let out a slow breath as they cleared the atmosphere. Of course, there were still fully functional Star Destroyers waiting for them, but the
Swift
's forward cannons kept the Destroyers busy until they could lumber past and make it to the jump point.
“Prepare to jump on my mark,” the navigator instructed.
“Copy that,” Wedge responded.
Five seconds later, with a flicker of pseudomotion, Wedge and the
Swift Liberty
made the jump to hyperspace, leaving Luke behind with half a dozen TIE fighters on his tail.
“Luke,” Janson called. “I think you missed your cue.”
“Don't worry about me,” Luke replied. “I've got my own heading.”
“You've...” The Raltiirian spluttered and finally tried again to start his sentence. “Come again?”
“I'll be back,” Luke said. “Trust me.”
It was not much of an explanation, but he could not afford any more delays. Without waiting for a response, he turned to his new heading and made the jump to hyperspace.
