Book 3: The Rogue Moon, starts now!
---
THE ROGUE MOON
It is four years since the end of the Droid Uprising. Peace has come, at last, to the Galaxy. The Jedi Council has turned it's attention to training the next generation of Padawans.
The Republic, for it's part, is mindful of it's stalemate with the Confederacy, and is making a concerted effort to colonize uninhabited planets in the Outer Rim Territories.
Meanwhile, Boba Fett has slowly been gathering his forces together, including Asajj Ventress. Now he takes his own quiet first step to disrupt peace and order in the Galaxy....
----
A silent fleet of dark ships drifted in the unremarkable Noad system. Out beyond it's turbulent purple gas giant, surrounded with spectacular emerald rings. It's largest moon, a simple ball of rock, unremarkable except for it's size. Large enough to be a planet in it's own right, trapped in the superior gravity well of the Gas Giant.
Asajj Ventress still fully did not understand what drove or motivated Boba Fett, the only clone ever allowed to grow at a normal rate. He had never been indoctrinated into the Grand Army of the Republic, that was certain. He claimed to have been raised and trained, for his first few years at any rate, by Jango Fett himself, and that his loyalty was to the memory of his father, and no other.
In the four years that had passed since he had hired her, he had quietly expanded his fleet, begun making inroads into the criminal underworld of the Galaxy, and quietly amassing a small fortune. She knew he wanted revenge against the Jedi and the Republic, but beyond that his motives were unclear.
Such as this particular mission, for example.
She looked out over the fleet that hung out there in space. Mid sized freighters, corvettes and combat ships of various size and hue. Z-95 Headhunters, you name it. Her own Geonosian fan-blade fighter was out there, currently being piloted by a young Twi'Ek. The ship itself didn't mean much to her; she could've easily purchased a better one, what with all the smuggling and theiving she'd been doing for Boba over the last four years. But she had a sentimental attachment to it.
Four years.....four years of strong arm intimidation, smuggling, and relatively easy battles against blaster-wielding toughs who were unable to face her and her whirling scarlet lightsabers. It seemed beneath her, somehow. So little, so insignificant compared to the great deeds she had once been involved in.
She could have left at any time, Boba had made that clear. She stayed only because she saw a gleam in the young clone's eye. A gleam that said he had some kind of plan. That, and the fact that working with him kept the weariness at bay.
He was growing slowly into that muscular build that she knew so well from the Clones she had fought. He wore the same Mandalorian armor as his "father", repainted in bloody scarlet and brassy gold colors. He left the helmet off this day, revealing his dyed blonde hair. He looked incongrous, to say the least, compared to his "bretheren".
"I still don't understand," she said, walking over to him, "Why exactly we are doing this."
"For the same reason you unleashed the Droid Uprising," Boba answered. "To cause our enemies as much suffering and chaos as possible. If we're lucky, Coruscant will be destroyed. If not, well, at least we'll make them sweat a bit."
"Is this your master plan? The pinnacle of your ambition?" Even as she asked the question that it was not so, but her bitter, contestuous nature prompted her to say it anyway.
Boba knew this well, having gained the measure of her by now. He gave a toothy, unpleasant grin and shook his head. "This is only the beginning, Asajj. And the beauty of it is, no one, not even those prissy all-seeing Jedi, will ever realize who was behind it." He leaned over the communications equipment and spoke. "Is everything in place?"
"Yes sir, we're ready. Just say the word." The voice was harried, grim, professional. One of the many mercenaries whose loyalty Boba had bought. He was still only a boy, really, a teenager with a high opinion of himself. But he had a brilliant mind. Asajj had been beaten by a brash, brilliant boy before, named Skywalker. It was a lesson she had never forgot.
"The word is given, proceed." Boba leaned back from the communications array. "One doesn't always need massive superweapons to change things," he said, conversationally. "Sometimes many small subtle things will do the job."
Asajj sensed this was true not only of this particular endeavor, but of his general strategy. "I just hope it works," she said simply.
"It will work at least as well as your uprising did," Boba assured her. "Perhaps better."
Asajj bristled at that, then let it go. One thing she had learned about Boba Fett these past four years was that he almost always spoke tactically. Shaking her head, she looked out the viewport at the moon that was their target.
----
Many small anti-gravity units had been placed on the moon's surface, concentrated in one small area. In the center, a hyperdrive had been placed. Linked to the rewired antigrav units, it whined to life, and all the antigrav units activated with it.
The moon trembled in it's orbit. Orbital dynamics were no mean thing, not to be disrupted by simple engineering. The laws of the Universe were not so easily broken, the paths of milennium not so easily turned aside.
Unless additional powers were brought into opposition.
----
"Now, Assaj," Boba said.
She closed her eyes. Tapping into her anger, frustration and bitterness, she called upon the Dark Side of the Force. It boiled in her alien six-chambered heart, in her veins, in her dark soul. She gritted her teeth in pain and concentration. Slowly a growl grew in her throat, that eventually became a scream of rage.
----
The Force Push Assaj gave tipped the balance, and the moon was wrenched from it's orbit. Vaccum-suited mercenaries flew away from the surface on jet packs.
For a few short moments the entire Moon flashed into hyperspace, before it's drive burnt out. Inertia alone kept it in that transient, ultra-dimensional space for a short time. Then the antigravs fired again, this time with their polarity reversed as they had been programmed to do, and slowed the moon down just enough that it dropped out of hyperspace. Still going incredibly fast, it rocketed through the interstellar void....
...toward Coruscant.

"Asajj? Asajj!" Boba actually sounded concerned.
She groaned and raised her head. Her limbs felt chilly; her race's version of trembling exhaustion. "How long....how long was I out?"
"A few minutes only," he assured her, and helped her to sit up. He pressed a cup of stimcaf into her hand, which she accepted greatfully. For her particular biology, stimcaf was better than water or most anything else for shock and exhaustion. Boba had done his research.
"Your concern is touching," she said drily, as she sipped the stimcaf. Then her attitude abruptly shifted. "Did it work?"
Boba Fett gave a grim smile. "Assaj, it worked perfectly. Any minute now the entire Coruscant system will need new undertunics. That's if they survive at all." He took her free hand. "I am pleased, Asajj," he said earnestly.
Now she gave a twisted smile of her own. In one way, at least, Boba was a typical gangly, awkward young boy. With the same drive that any such young male had.
Asajj certainly had no moral qualms with giving him what he wanted; and their species were certainly compatible in that way. But it was one thing she could still hold over him; one bit of power that she had. She guarded it jealously. Perhaps one day, but not today.
"As I said, your concern is touching," she said, and rose slowly to her feet. "If there was nothing else?"
Boba sighed, and anger glinted in his eyes, but he had good emotional control. He swallowed, and said "No, not for now. Though you may want to observe the tracking telemetry later."
"As you say," she agreed. "You'll excuse me for a few moments."
Boba gave a curt nod, and she dissapeared into the cramped quarters that
Slave I
provided.
Boba turned, grinding his teeth in frustration; then put his personal lusts aside. He could have what he wanted easily enough elsewhere, of course. But Asajj fascinated him, on many levels. But for now, he would focus on his revenge against the Jedi murderers of his father. That too was satisfying in it's own way. Very satisfying.
"Oh, by the way," Asajj's voice floated out of the darkness. "I will still want my ship back."
"And you shall have it," Boba assured her, not turning around. "I know it's important to you. Just as
Slave
is important to me."
Satisfied with that answer, Asajj said no more.
----
Anakin was doing something he had rare opportunity for these days; flying.
Between his duties as a member of the Jedi Council, traning Mara, the occasional off-planet mission, and squeezing in what time he could to be with Padme and their children, he had little time do indulge this particular hobby. What little mechanical work he did these days was limited to his artifical hand. So he truly took joy in this moment, soaring over the Coruscant city in a modified speeder he had been able to get hold of. It was not the same one he and Obi-Wan had flown in the night the assasination attempt on Padme shortly before the Clone Wars, but it was a very similar make and model.
He flew high, well above the traffic lanes of the city. Still well below the traffic coming in from offworld, of course. In those altitudes he would've needed a rebreather or the closed cockpit of a Jedi Fighter. Come to that, he could have used his Jedi Fighter for this, but the Council frowned on such behavior, even from their Chosen One and the many eccenricities of his they indulged.
For the moment his mind was clear and he was free. More than once Master Yoda had remarked that it was only in a cockpit that Anakin truly meditated. And Anakin couldn't really dissagree. Only here, or in Padme's arms, was he at peace. And when with Padme he usually had things other than meditation on his mind.
For more than twenty minutes he looped and soared through the air, a smile on his face and joy in his heart. Anakin walked on the Light Side of the Force today, indeed.
The training of Luke and Leia went well. Obi-Wan sometimes jested that the boy, while headstrong, was much more mellow and reasonable than his father had been. If anything, it was the daughter who had inheited the father's temprament, more than the son. Yoda shook his head constantly over this, his last student. Yet he also praised her wit and learning curve. That, clearly, it was often said to Anakin by the old Jedi Master, clearly came from the girl's mother.
Anakin had not mellowed so much as to laugh at that sentiment, but he could, at least, reluctantly acknowledge the truth of it. Like Mara, both twins learned quickly. Luke, while capable in the flight training simulations, showed more aptitude with the training lightsaber. It was Leia, again, who showed her father's aptitude in the flight simulators. It was, of course, far too soon for either of them to attempt to fly even the podracers Anakin had flown as a child, but both giggling children had spent time in their father's lap on those rare occasions when he could spare time to pilot a craft on anything other than official business.
But not today. This was his moment. He soared as high as he dared, then banked a hard left.
Padme had risen in stature as a Senator, and Anakin had been able to finally see the Republic at peace. With Palpatine gone--and as yet unwilling to try for the Chancellorship herself--Padme had dedicated her career to cleansing corruption. She had done well.
Anakin felt no warning from the Force, so it was something of a surprise when his communicator crackled. "Anakin," it was Obi-Wan, not Padme. "Full Council meeting. Emergency session."
"Emergency?" Anakin frowned. "I sense nothing in the Force."
"Nor I, old friend. But the threat is very real. Come at once."
As in, don't even bother to change into your Jedi robes or pick up Mara. This must be truly serious. "I'm on my way," Anakin said, spinning the speeder around in midair and shooting down towards the Jedi Temple.

I REALLY loved this update, seeing Anakin in his element and at peace was most gratifying!
This passage was especially poignant to me. Lovely!

Anakin's speeder came rocketing into the Jedi Temple landing area, and even Anakin's skill as a pilot was put to the test not to wreck instead of connecting to the platform. Needless to say, it was hardly his smoothest stop.
He leapt out of the cockpit with barely an apology for the Jedi in attendance, but they understood well; the strain of whatever crisis this was already on their faces.
"What's the situation?" he all but shouted as he pelted down the hallways towards the Jedi Council. Up the neverending flight of stairs.....
"Systemwide disaster imminent, Master," the young Padawan on deck duty answered him.
"Which system?"
"Coruscant, Master."
Anakin stopped and stared at him. "What?"
"Please hurry!"
Anakin shook his head and ran, using the Force to give an extra spring to his legs. Why didn't they install a turbolift? Something to discuss later....if there was a later. This was really bad.
Aalya Secura arrived up the other stairwell the same time he did.
"What is it?" he gasped at her.
"I know no more than you, let us enter."
They did.
The other Masters already sat in their chairs. Anakin expected some sort of reprimand; but there was none. There faces were grim.
"What has happened, Masters?" he asked as he took his seat.
"Orbital tracking picked this up not ten minutes ago," said Mace. "It's still outsystem, by a fair distance, but approaching at an appreciable percentage of the speed of light. It will arrive in approximately five hours."
Before Anakin could ask what it was, Yoda gestured and a hologram lit up. A massive ball of rock...it looked planet-sized....
"A rogue moon?" Anakin asked, stunned.
"To disrupt the orbit of such a body, the Force it would require," said Yoda. "Yet Dooku behind this, we beleive not."
Anakin shook his head. "Of course not. He would want Coruscant intact, to reap it's resources. The Holocrons not least."
"That was our conclusion also," Obi-Wan agreed. "Contact him anyway, but keep it brief."
Anakin's eyes narrowed. "Assaj."
"Ventress? Why suspect, do you?" Yoda asked.
But Mace was nodding. "It would make sense. Such brutal vengeance would be her style."
"But surely she could not accomplish that without help," Aayla pointed out.
"I assume the Senate knows," Anakin said.
"General media leaks, prevent we could not," Yoda said sadly. "Hysteria, begun has. Rioting on the streets there soon will be."
"The Clone Home Defense Fleet has dispatched a Star Destroyer and three fighter squadrons," said Obi-Wan. "But it would be like spitting into a sandstorm on Tattoine."
Anakin felt chilled to the bone. "This never appeared in our vision of the future, Master Yoda."
"Always in motion, the future is," Yoda reminded him. "And all details, such visions reveal not."
"I can't beleive I mised such a vital detail, though," said Anakin, anger and frustration in his voice.
"Do everything, no one can," Yoda reminded him, gently. "Learned this lesson, you have."
Anakin nodded, then bowed his head. "I am at a loss as to what will can be done."
"Suggest, we do, that you go to this rogue moon, and learn what you can of it."
"If the Force tells you how to stop this, Chosen One, listen to it," Obi-Wan said.
Anakin was chilled anew. They did not blame him for failing to forsee it...but as the Chosen One, they did expect him to
fix
it. Even Obi-Wan.
This is what it means to fulfill the prophecy, he thought to himself. To always be the one expected to save the day. Lucky me.
He swallowed and answered Obi-Wan. "The Force hasn't told me anything yet, but my ears are open."
"It told you that Assaj was responsible," said Aalya.
Anakin shook his head. "That was a guess, based on what we already know. Nothing more."
"But a good guess," said Mace. "So, keep guessing."
Anakin nodded. "I will contact Dooku. I assume Artoo will have my ship warmed by the time I'm done with him."
"It shall be so, old friend," Obi-Wan assured.
"Go," said Yoda. "Time presses, it does."
Anakin got up, bowed, and bolted from the room.

Anakin waited impatiently by the holoprojector. But in all fairness, his impatience was well justified, given the nature of the situation.
Dooku finaly materialized as a blue HoloNet ghost. The Sith Lord looked quite tired and out of sorts, and Anakin briefly wondered if he had roused the old man from sleep.
"What is it, Skywalker?"
Dooku asked blearily.
"I trust, Lord Tyrranus, that you haven't been playing any games with Orbital Dynamics."
Dooku blinked, and for the first time Anakin could remember, the Count of Serenno's response was less than suave.
"What?"
Anakin sighed. "A rogue moon is heading for Coruscant. I was pretty sure you weren't responsible, as is the Council. But the question had to be asked."
"A
dis
courtesy call, as it were?" Dooku said, recovering some of his usual grace. "Ah, no. Corruption is still rife, for all your pretty wife's valiant efforts, on that smog-filled citadel world of yours. But no, smashing it with another planet is hardly my style, and I don't see the point."
Anakin nodded, ingoring the Count's attempts to get a rise out of him. "I beleive you. It seemed rather ham-fisted to me. Vitriol maybe, but not you."
"Darth Vitriol would have to learn many things before he could even try, and he could not try without my knowing,"
Dooku answered, shaking his head at the ferocious single-mindedness of his own current apprentice.
"It does sound rather like something Asajj Ventress would attempt."
"That was my thought also," Anakin agreed. "Yet she couldn't do it without help." He gave a sarcastic half-bow. "Sorry to waste your time, but it had to be done. You'll excuse me as I go save the planet, won't you."
"By all means, Chosen One."
Dooku paused.
"May the Force be with you,"
he said, with a sort of pained, reluctant honesty.
"And you," Anakin responded, too startled to say anything else.
Dooku dissapeared.
Anakin turned and ran. How much time did they have left? Less and less, that was certain. He ran like the wind.
But as he ran, he vowed to himself that if they survived, he would ramrod the Council getting turbolifts installed, precedent be damned.

Ack... not having internet is juz sucking...
OK rant over
sorry it juz not the same w/o having my daily fanfic fix
Missed so much
LOOOVED the part with Mace telling Anakin to 'keep guessing'
hehehe
And the fact they all don't think Dooku would do that (which I'd think he wouldn't either
) glad they believe it might be Asajj
Now onto discovering a way to stop it.
Wish you luck Anakin! Gonna need it!
Thanks for the PMs! Keep'em coming (though it might be another mth before I can read'em

Anakin raced into the hanger bay. A stitch threatened to form in his side, until he used the Force to dampen it. Most days he didn't think much about his missing hand, save when he was working on the mechanical replacement. But now it seemed that the ghostly pain of the hand that had once been here echoed today, as it had not in years. He grimaced and ignored it.
There is only peace; there is only the Force.
Faithful Artoo had his old, banged-up Jedi fighter powered up and ready to go, already slowly turning on it's launching pad.
Anakin had pioneered the precision use of the Force as a pilot, both during the Clone Wars and after. Obi-Wan had often told him to try writing a manuscript on the subject. Anakin snorted laughter at this; he was a man of action, not a writer. Nevertheless Padme agreed, telling him he could dictate his thoughts into a voice recorder and someone could edit it into shape. When Obi-Wan and Padme agreed on something, they were usually right. When Yoda added his endorsement, saying that the Jedi padawans might benefit from the instruction, that sealed it. But he had no
time!
Nevertheless, as he vaulted into the cockpit, his mind focused on the facts of it he could relate:
It is no different than using the Force to become one with your lightsaber. Focus and center on the moment; be ready for anything. The entire universe is before you; embrace it.
Artoo had done most of the checks, leaving only the heads up display and the targeting computer for him. Taking a deep breath, he closed the cockpit and took off.
No fun joyride, this. He rocketed straight up into the atmosphere, at speed. The sky faded from blue to purple to black, the halo of the atmosphere becoming visible, then he slipped free of it. The stars came out, and all sound faded. He shot past the nearer moon, and out into the greater Coruscant system.
"Artoo," Anakin said. "Tap into the Coruscant defense grid."
Artoo beeped with soft amusement, the sound of which travelled through the structure of the ship. The little droid had, of course, already done what was neccesary; and the direction of the rogue moon came up on Anakin's heads up display. Anakin smirked wryly. "Well done, Artoo."
It was too close for hyperdrive, of course. But nevertheless he kicked his regluar drive to maximum and shot off to meet the planetoid.

For all his speed, he could not jump into hyperspace without overshooting the rogue moon. And at maximum in-system speed, he could move only slightly faster than the planetoid itself.
He shot past the Clone Home Defense fleet. They had halted four planetary diameters out from Coruscant, and here they waited. Their missile barrages had already been launched, for all the good they would do. Perhaps, just perhaps, they would slow down the advance of the planetoid a tiny little bit. If both the missile strikes and Anakin failed, then the fleet would sacrifice their ships in a further attempt to slow the planetoid. Shavar was not part of the fleet, but Cody was. Anakin brooded.
As he shot past the fleet, a single communication came from the amassed ships. "Good luck, Chosen One," was all it said.
"We make our own luck," he replied, knowing it to be a common expression amongst the clones.
Then he left them behind, the ship lights glimmering in the dark.
How symbolic of the Universe,
Anakin thought to himself.
Artoo let out a mournful whistle.
"Yeah, I know," Anakin said. "Me too."

They came up on the missles a half hour later. The planetoid was a vague blur in the middle distance now. He still couldn't see it properly. But he knew he would soon enough.
He shot up and over the missiles, hoping none of them would make the mistake of tracking him. They could not stop the planetoid, he knew that. But they might slow it down just a little. And every little helped. Right now, he needed all the help he could get.
Closer.
Ever closer to the planetoid.
Finally, he got close enough to see it properly.
Artoo let out another long, low whistle.
"Look at the
size
of that thing," Anakin breathed.
The planetoid was a massive ugly chunk of rock. He had seen the holoscans, of course. But seeing it in person was another matter.
And this was no simple matter of finding a weak spot and blasting away at it.
He relaxed into the Force, and cast about in it for an answer. He found none, but felt a gentle push to come around to the planetoid's far side. Perhaps that would provide the answer.
He plotted in the course, but even so he felt the icy clutch of fear around his heart. Not even the soothing depths of the Force could make it go away.
In a way, this was his greatest challenge. One he might not survive.

You can't kill him.
No. Not allowed.

Hurry up and update! Oh wait. I'll be gone for a bit. Darn it.
Update anyway!
But hurry.

RE: The Rogue Moon (Mostly Anakin. Continuing the AU "Journey Towards Freedom" Saga). 7
Anakin looped around to the far side of the planetoid. It was remarkably stable, showing no tumbling or rotating in it's passage. On the far side, he could see nothing but the blackness of true night, but Artoo let out a low whistle.
"What is it, Artoo?"
The droid let out a complex sequence of bleeps and boops. Anakin read the translation readout and nodded. He thumbed his communicator to Jedi frequency. "Anakin to Council. Do you read me?"
There was a crackle of static, and then Obi-Wan's voice said, "We read you, old friend. The Chancellor is, rather understandably, demanding an update. What have you found?"
"I didn't, Artoo did. Scanners are picking up an elaborate network of antigrav units on the far side of the planetoid. In the center there appears to be a hyperdrive. Clearly that was at least part of the method used to wrench the moon free of it's orbit."
"Can you do anything with it?"
"Such is my hope. Coming in for a landing now. I'll report back once I've analyzed it."
"Don't take too long, we have barely over two hours left," Obi-Wan said.
"Understood, Council."
"Take care, you must," Yoda's voice cut in. "On your skills, many lives depend this day."
"I know, Master Yoda. I won't fail you. Anakin out."
Anakin brought the fighter down gingerly between two of the antigrav units. Or at least, thats where Artoo and the sensors told him he was. Here, in the permanent night of the far side of the Planetoid, he couldn't see a thing. It would be dark, and cold.
Fortunately the years of the Clone Wars had taught Jedi to equip their fighters with the appropriate equipment.
Anakin turned in the cramped cockpit and pushed down on the back of his chair. It slid into the infrastructure of the ship, revealing a small storage space. He removed a silver helmet and vaccum suit from the cramped space, and put them on. The compact, flexible suit easily expanded to fit over his clothes.
He popped Artoo free of his socket and opened the hatch. "C'mon, Artoo," he said into his comlink. "Let's figure this out."
Artoo whistled affirmatively.
Anakin ignited his saber and also a glow-stick light source; he'd learned that particular lesson himself, during the Droid Uprising. Between those light sources and Artoo's own spotlight, they could see well enough, at least for a limited range around themselves.
Nevertheless, the darkness was almost complete. "Lead on," he told Artoo, and the little droid did, as they were surrounded by the depths of night.
