RE: Never Again - The Skywalker Family - Post RoTS AU, angst
Destiny by its nature is something you cannot escape. This was a touching story. It was sad to see Anakin and Padme watch their daughter die. It seems to me that Anakin only put off the inevitable by returning to the light. A shame, but that's destiny.
Poor Luke seemed window dressing here, but then again, it wasn't about him.
I liked how Padme could sense Anakin's anger returning. She's seen it before. Can she bring him back again?
Excellent fic, Vaderlvr.

This was just heartbreaking; the desperation and desolation reached out and grabbed me by the throat *sniff*
I think the tragedy of this whole thing is not that Leia died; it's that her death is going to tear her family apart when it should be bringing them closer. I have to keep an eye on this one; your work is always so magnificent, Kim; you never cease to amaze me!

This was beautiful and haunting, so sad and full of desperation. It also had a kind of dangerous quality to it knowing the Dark Side was there just waiting for the right opportunity and Anakin toying with that dark possibility. Anakin never could handle death of a loved one and to feel like he's failed again is too much. But Leia wouldn't want him to deal with her death this way. It's going to tear apart their family. Just the thought of this bringing on a new Sith Lord gives me butterflies.
I had to give me daughter a big hug after reading this. She looked at me funny but that's okay.

I'm happy you decided to continue this. It's so sad that Anakin would make this choice due to Leia's death. Anakin should know she wouldn't want him to do so, but grief is blinding Anakin so much he can't see how useless and self-destructive turning to the darkside is. My hope is that he can come back to himself before he hurts himself and those left that he loves.
When I first read this story I was sitting at work crying buckets. I read Written in Ashes on Beyond before this one and I couldn't stop crying and had not one tissue in sight! Leia's "Daddy, I know." just kills me. Just thinking about that line makes me weepy.

RE: Never Again - The Skywalker Family - Post RoTS AU, angst - To be continued...
The plaintive words broke his heart all over again and he had to resist the urge to crush her to his chest. She was so terribly fragile now, and he constantly feared hurting her. “That sounds like a fun time,” he agreed. “We’ll do it again…when you’re better.”
Leia looked past him and sighed. “Daddy, I don’t think I’m gonna get better.”
Anakin swallowed hard and stared at her. “Why do you say that, princess?” He tried very hard to make his voice sound playful and normal, but her eyes grew sad.
“Daddy, I know,” she said softly.
Those three words shattered him. He dropped his head in his hands and wept freely for the first time in front of her. Then he felt a small hand drop on his shoulder and give him a comforting pat. He looked up at her, so small and brave, facing death with more courage than most grown men…and he hated himself. Anakin crawled up into the bed and wrapped his arms around his daughter, finding more comfort than he gave.
Heartbreakingly beautiful
This was absolutely incredible
Will you please PM me when you update?

Crazy, huh?
Chapter 2
The funeral was over and everyone else had departed, leaving the family alone for the first time since Leia’s death. Now there were only three…
That first dinner had been a quiet, awkward affair, each of them exquisitely and painfully aware of the empty chair. It was true that it had been months since Leia had felt well enough to join them for meals, but while she lived there had always been the hope that
one day
she would sit there again. Now the chair was a stark reminder of dreams that would never be realized. None of them had eaten much and Luke had kept his eyes focused on his plate, as if afraid he might see that empty chair.
Anakin had told Padmé to go to bed, alarmed by the dark shadows under her eyes and the pallor of her face. Padmé looked drawn and defeated, a feeling Anakin knew well. She cried off and on, tears striking at odd moments. As for himself, the tears would not come, no matter how hard he wished for them. The tears would have been a relief, a lancing of the pain. They remained locked inside him, however, festering into something that was warped beyond grief and anger. Anakin knew that he was radiating darkness instead of light, but could no longer bring himself to care.
Anakin found some small comfort in adhering to the bedtime routine for his son. Their daughter was gone, but they had a son to usher through the grief.
That
was their job now, it seemed. The twins had shared a room, and when Anakin entered the room to put Luke to bed, the sight of Leia’s toys arranged so carefully on the bed had struck him hard, like a blow between the eyes. Leia was gone.
They had offered Luke another room until Leia’s things could be removed, but he had stubbornly refused their offer and told them in no uncertain terms that he wanted Leia’s things to remain as they were. For the time being, Anakin had decided to honor his son’s wishes.
Luke was lying in his bed, his blue eyes solemn and wary as he looked up at his father. “Where’s Leia?” he asked again. Though they had tried to explain his twin’s death to him, Luke could not quite grasp what had happened.
“She’s gone to play with the angels,” Anakin replied softly. It had seemed the easiest explanation; it would have been a comfort to believe that lie himself. “Remember when we talked about it?”
The boy nodded, biting at his lip. “But I don’t want her to be gone,” he said in a small, plaintive voice.
“I know,” his father answered, brushing his hand over Luke’s hair. “I miss her, too.”
“When is she coming back?” he asked. There was still hope in his voice; he was too young to recognize the permanence of death. Anakin wished fervently he could refuse to believe it, too.
Anakin smiled sadly and shook his head. “She can’t come back, Luke. There’s no coming back from where she went.”
“Oh.” Luke’s small, chubby fingers plucked at the edge of his blanket. “Then can I go visit her?”
“No, I’m afraid none of us can,” Anakin said softly, blinking back his own tears.
Oh, Leia! Losing you has killed a part of me.
Luke nodded and rolled over on his side, facing the window. “Okay, Daddy,” he answered. “I’m ready to go to sleep now.” It was clear that the boy wanted to be alone with his thoughts. Luke was not normally a solemn child, but he was sensitive and intelligent, and wanted to work things out for himself.
Anakin studied Luke’s back for a moment and then sighed and got to his feet. Luke, like the rest of them, would have to find his own way out of his grief.
As he walked down the hallway to the room he shared with his wife, Anakin realized that Leia was sleeping alone, far from all who loved her, for the first time. He stopped and fell to his knees before he reached the door. There, where he was finally alone, he gave into the sorrow.
Anakin wept for his dead daughter.
~~~~~~
The days passed, but still the grief that had taken them all in its relentless grip held fast.
He could feel the barely controlled rage that coursed through him, and it frightened him in its intensity. It had become a great, clawing beast that he tried to keep caged up inside of him, but he could hear the distant rattling of those bars and had to wonder how long it would be before the creature found a way out.
Sometimes, he would feel Luke’s gaze on him, curious and wary. Luke was much too strong in the Force not to recognize that something was not as it should be. Fortunately, he was too young to know what was really happening to his father – or its significance.
Anakin was torn between apathy and reluctant surrender. He had fought the dragon before and defeated it, but he was not sure now if he had the strength to do so again – or even if he wanted to try. The dark was relentless and seductive. The thought of simply letting go and falling became more and more tempting. But there were decisions to be made first, ramifications to consider. He had not only himself to think of now, but Padmé and Luke. If he gave into the Dark would he be protecting them or putting them in danger?
He was torn between the Dark and the Light, and the struggle was exhausting him.
~~~~~~~~
He woke abruptly, the knowledge of Leia’s death crashing over him anew like a tidal wave, leaving him gasping for breath on a distant shore. Beside him, Padmé slept, her exhaustion finally claiming her. She had cried herself to sleep again last night, her back toward him, caught up in her own grief and pain. It was just as well, for he did not know how long the thin veneer he had painted over the turbulence in his soul would hold. She had always been able to read him too well.
Giving into his restlessness, Anakin got out of bed and wandered the window. To the east was his daughter’s final resting place. That beautiful meadow was forever ruined for him. When Leia had died, everything good in him had died as well, and he knew it. He turned and studied his wife in the moonlight, wondering whether she dreamed of Leia, alive and laughing. He knew he would find comfort in such a dream, but it seemed that he was going to be denied that solace.
Padmé sighed and rolled over, now facing him. Her face was smooth and untroubled and he thought that perhaps she did not dream at all. That too, might be a comfort. Once more, Anakin turned and studied the darkness beyond the window. He pressed his hand to the pane, as if he could reach out and touch Leia.
But Leia was gone – forever.
“I promise,” he whispered. “I promise I won’t fail again.”
You’ve said those words before, my boy,
a mocking voice came to him in the darkness. Anakin stood still in shock, for the voice was not his own. It was not even the voice of the Darkness that he knew so well.
Yes, Anakin, I’ve come to help you, even though you turned your back on me and everything I could have offered you.
It was Palpatine’s voice, as smooth and cultured as he remembered it.
“Chancellor?” he asked, though he already knew the truth.
Yes, Anakin,
Palpatine replied.
I’ve been waiting a long time for you to see the truth. It’s too bad that it took such a loss to make you see…
Anakin felt a bitter coldness rush through his body, and he began to shiver. The room was suddenly freezing and he could not still his trembling. He glanced toward the bed and saw Padmé pull the covers up more securely. So she felt it, too. From down the hall, he sensed Luke’s restlessness. His son felt whatever it was as well, and it troubled him. Anakin sent a wave of reassurance to Luke through the Force, felt his son settle into a deeper slumber.
“Why have you come here?” he asked quietly, careful not to disturb his sleeping wife.
I’ve been waiting for you to admit that you needed me and all that I could have taught you,
Palpatine said.
And now I think you know that.
“Go away,” Anakin hissed between clenched teeth. He reached up and put his hands over his ears as if to block out the mocking voice. “Go away!” It was a plea now, a sign of weakness and Palpatine was quick to take note of it and push his advantage.
Your daughter might be alive and sleeping in that room down the hall if you would have joined me, my boy,
Palpatine said relentlessly.
Instead she’s lying in her lonely grave. You still have your beloved Padmé, of course, and that fine young son of yours. But will you have to lose them too before you realize your mistake?
Anakin fell to his knees and lurched forward, felt his stomach clench and revolt. What little he had eaten came back up. He knelt there, emptying his belly, trying to block out the Chancellor’s voice. It did no good, because Palpatine had found his opportunity and was determined to take advantage of it.
I’ll wait until you’re not indisposed, Anakin.
Palpatine’s voice was utterly patient.
Then we shall talk more on this.
With a groan, Anakin fell and rolled to the floor away from the fouled spot, and then sprawled out in a graceless heap. Hot tears ran down his cheeks as he looked up at the dark ceiling. And still Palpatine’s voice hissed in his head.
At last, he surrendered and listened.
The voice had much to say.
