I don’t want you to die ever, especially alone. Not alone…I’ll be there with you, Master,” Anakin promised. “Not for years and years yet, but I won’t let you die alone.”
{........}
“Not death…rebirth,” Obi-Wan slid into sleep as Anakin snuggled up to him, where he soon fell asleep with his head on his master’s heart and Obi-Wan’s arm curled around his shoulder. There they were found, in the same position, still together, in the morning.
Nearly thirty five years later, both were proved right.
That gave me the chills, what irony. I loved this story and I am sad to see it end, but it was wonderful

You have such a way with words. The anxiety of the moment in this post, the way I wanted Anakin to alert the Jedi now because I was still afraid he would die. The way they clung to each other. Really beautiful.
I loved this.
“Won’t leave you…ever. Taken, perhaps…won’t leave.” He brushed a finger alongside Anakin’s cheek, wiping the tear away.
“I need you, Master. You can’t die, not ever.”
A weary smile crossed Obi-Wan’s face as the sedatives slowly took affect. “Must. Every being dies and rejoins the Force. Someday I will, too….peacefully I hope…alone in my bed…even older than Master Yoda.”
“I don’t want you to die ever, especially alone. Not alone…I’ll be there with you, Master,” Anakin promised. “Not for years and years yet, but I won’t let you die alone.”
A chill swept through Obi-Wan and he shivered. It would take a while before he felt truly warm inside but this small boy at his side was doing his best to help warm his master by both his words and his physical presence. He needed to offer something in return, something to take the fear of loss and abandonment that underlay his words and turn them from despair into hope.
Beautiful job. Bravo.

Oh my gosh! That was beautiful, Valairy! The bond between Obi-wan and Anakin was so perfectly illustrated that I felt such a pang at that last line. It was like a punch in the gut! *sniffle* I hate that such a wonderful friendship ended up going so terribly wrong.
Not only did I love the interactions between all the characters here, but you gave us such a fascinating peek into Anakin's mind: his former life as a slave, the way he craved praise and hid his mistakes... It all makes perfect sense and was a nice addition to the story. Bravo!
What a great tale to relay during the lnog winter months! I loved it - and now I think I'm going to go crawl under an electric blanket or something to warm up. Your descriptions were so vivid that they made me cold!
Congrats on a superb story, my friend! You outdid yourself!

Wow - probably the best ending I ever read!
The joy from Bant, Garen and Mace (He almost smiled. ) was very nice - they were all so happy to see Obi-Wan alive.
He was alive, and Anakin wasn’t going to let him go. Maybe his master couldn’t - wouldn’t - hug him, but he could hug his master and that was almost as good as having his master hug him – and then he felt it, the slow unsteady creep of an arm and the hiss of an indrawn breath that accompanied it.
Obi-Wan slowly slid an arm around Anakin, gingerly hugging him back. It hurt desperately. No matter how much it hurt, it was worth it. It might be his only chance to hug Anakin, before the boy again rejected the familiarity.
Very, very cute!

*happy sigh* Lovely. I'd like to go back and read the entire thing again, but I've got to get to work on the flood I've been causing.
The plea brought a pang to his heart, and a memory of thinking those same thoughts as he held a dying man, sitting on a cold floor in Naboo: Don’t die, Master, don’t die. He had not voiced the thoughts; tried to stifle his tears, but a lone one that had escaped to slide down his cheek had spoken for him, just as Qui-Gon’s brush of that tear from his face had done the same in return. If his master’s last words had been only of another, his last act had been a loving gesture to his padawan; a recognition of the ties that had bound them forever together.
His master had been taken from him; he had not left his padawan. It had seemed so, at first, after what transpired in the Council chambers, but Qui-Gon had been taken from him prematurely, before he could ever get a chance to explain his words and actions to his padawan. If nothing else, Obi-Wan had come to understand that his master had never meant to have him feel abandoned. No matter the hurt that his dying words had been only of Anakin, a hurt that would always remain, the request that he be the one to train Anakin itself was itself as much proof of his regard as the finger across his cheek.
I had to comment on this passage, 'cos this is exactly how I see Qui-Gon. I always cringe at that scene in front of the Council where he declares Obi-Wan to be "capable" but I just don't buy the argument that Qui-Gon is some cold, indifferent figure. Personally, I always think he looks distinctly "Heaven forgive me for this" in that scene.
Sorry, I'll stop preaching now.
This was lovely: "Won’t leave you…ever. Taken, perhaps…won’t leave.” He brushed a finger alongside Anakin’s cheek, wiping the tear away.
Nice foreshadowing too. It's stories like these that make me wonder how it could all have gone so wrong, so quickly.
Oh yeah, Palpatine. Miserable old git.

I just knew this was coming to an end when I found it. I'm sad I missed it from the first post but I'm happy that I got to enjoy such a great story.
The ending is wonderful. It really shows the bond between the two and the need for each other. The last line was superb. Such foreboding. But ultimately they were there together in the end.

Well, I finally have time to come around here and find that I missed two new chapters, but they were worth the wait. You have a very poignant style of writing and do a fine piece of work with making Obi-wan suffer.
I especially like the allusion to Anakin writhing in the burning lava or hell as he sees it, but, oddly enough, one he prefers and understands because it is where he comes from. Are you saying that he was always destined to the ending he incurred? I have a hard time answering that one myself, but love all the subtle hints in a story that suggest the darkness that was always present in the child Anakin. I guess its kind of creepy, but it also suggests that despite Obi-wan's noble spirit and willingness to give and sacrifice so much for his apprentice, he could not see every warning sign that cropped up along the way.
Another worthy piece was young Anakin declaring that he would not let Obi-wan die alone as he would be there with him and the shiver running down Obi-wan's spine. Of course it was due to the hypothermia, not because the boy was walking over his grave so to speak. Yes Ani will be there right along with his lightsabre.
Well done, Val.

Wonderfully done. I had tears in my eyes at the end. I loved how Anakin was portrayed - how he stayed silent, so Obi-Wan would feel guilty. That's typical, in the early years. How resilient of Obi-Wan to actually come back - and how he must love his Master. Loved the last line. It fit so well.
Bravo!

Oh my, Anankin thought Obi-Wan a ghost meant to come back to haunt him? Awww...
“Stars above, Kenobi, you’re one banged up Jedi,” Garen shook his head as he watched Bant immobilize the shoulder, by far the most serious injury. One side of Obi-Wan’s chest was bruised, the color in stark contrast to the paleness of his skin elsewhere.
Banged up is one phrase for it. LOL
Nearly thirty five years later, both were proved right.
Fantastic last line there!!
Valairy, that was an excellent story, thank you for sharing it with us.

What a perfect ending. These last two chapters made me really, truly cry, and that doesn't usually happen.
This was such a beautiful, emotional story. Thank you for sharing it.

Beautiful conclusion.
“I don’t want you to die ever, especially alone. Not alone…I’ll be there with you, Master,” Anakin promised. “Not for years and years yet, but I won’t let you die alone.”
Now, that's just chilling.
Oh, why did my favourite Jedi team have to totally combust? I suppose they were happy together in the afterlife, but still ... *beats Palpatine to death with my 4000-page anatomy textbook*

There were SO many moments I loved in this. All of them, in fact. But I was particularly moved by Obi-Wan's banter with those who had gathered around him. He was still Obi-Wan in every sense of the word.
His early years as a slave had taught him that to admit to error brought punishment, that evading the truth by keeping silent kept one out of trouble if blame could not be reliably affixed. Anakin had grown so skilled at appearing innocent of wrong-doing that Watto did the Toydarian equivalent of throwing up his hands in frustration when things were undone or broken, contenting himself with berating the boy. Unlike many other slave owners, Watto had been fair enough in his own crude way. Without proof of wrongdoing, he refrained from physical punishment.
By now, silence for Anakin was an automatic reflex to avoid taking responsibility if he could avoid it for anything that could have negative consequences.
This was an incredible insight into Anakin's character and perhaps the root of his other flaws. Gorgeous!

That last line was a killer. Has to be one of the best last lines I've seen in a very, very long time. Hit you somewhere hard.
Such beautiful and wonderful angst, VS--gorgeous descriptions, break-your-heart characterization. You knew all the perfect characterization to show and you did it flawlessly. Don't know what else to say about that except... yeah, living through that chapter (as the description makes you live through the chapter) really wore me out. But in a very, very good way.
Much , VS--I'm sad to see this story end, but I love the way that it did. Absolutely perfect.
